I tested both of these PHEVs in California and ended up buying the BMW50e. The Benz was my second choice after also testing other PHEVs. I do miss the extra space in the back seat that the Benz provides, but BMW’s B58 engine plus the extra hp with electric is why the BMW won over the Mercedes.
I love the X5 in this design. Especially in dark green with black shadow. Which green is yours? Does it comes close to Mercedes Smaragdgreen which is stunning
How long's your lease? :) If you plan to keep it long term, and not go anywhere rougher, than a gravel road (why would you?) I'd save myself the money up front, and on future repairs.
It you want to do a correct test then you should compare similar engines and powertrains, not 2l vs 3l engine. You should chose instead GLE AMG 53 PHEV (with a similar price range- at least here in Sweden where I live) and then your test and comparison would be a much better one. Otherwise excellent video, keep doing a good job!
And there I was excited to have two PHEVs from the same segment on the set. I swear, if you didn't tell me you're from Sweden, I'd think you're Polish 🤣🤦🏻♂️
@@MarekDrivesENG Yeah dude but it's more common sense to compare same engines, right? I have owned for 3 years an 2021 GLE 350 de and I drove recently the latest X5 50 phev, well you don't have to be a polish dude to understand the difference
Agreed. Where I live, BMW offers better discounts on the X5 than Mercedes do on the GLE. Nevertheless, comparing base prices or similarly-specced cars, the GLE 53 hybrid is only a few thousand euros more expensive. I test drove the GLE 400e it’s simply not on the level of the X5 50e
BMW for me. More reliable, better sounding, better interior, and a far better drivers car. Bmw looks alot more "new" then the mercedes which looks like it could be a 2018 model.
Leg room in the X5 is surprisingly quite tight on 2nd row. Even the 3rd row option is better in gle. X5 leg room is not any bigger than honda CRV. GLE is definitely better choice for hauling family, but i still pick x5 over gle any day.
no 3rd row with hybrid (but second row now has no slide feature to gain the extra leg room) 3 months into new 50e I actually miss a lot of the things that were in my old 45e the added power and range dont really counter that. as for the doomsayers blabbing on about quality ive owned suv's from Porsche, Range Rover, Mercedes and BMW and I always go back to the X5 it just does everything, but better from driving across cities in full electric to dragging 1.5 tonne fallen trees off the road, all while still able to drive the entire family across Europe every summer.
Can you review a 550e sometime. Surely any diesel hybrid is going to suffer dpf etc issues because it’s never going to get properly warm to burn the soot.
Interesting topic! One could argue the other way around as the diesel particles won’t really clutter the particles filter while driving the short distances, if you drive in electric mode. This won’t hold if you mainly drive distances just beyond the electric range. Another problem might be, with the strong anti diesel sentiment, will you still be able to fuel Diesel in the coming years?
I think there are probably enough trucks busses etc doing 6-10 miles to the gallon to keep the demand for diesel going for a while yet may even be cheaper than petrol at some point
No, with battery empty. But it's not long term. If you never recharge the battery, and keep driving using mainly the diesel engine (mainly, because there's a small portion of the traction battery that recharges, and the car acts like a normal, Toyota-like hybrid) the fuel consumption will eventually increase. On the other hand, if you have 200-300 km to drive, you start with a full battery, and drive the remaining 200-220 km on diesel, you'll see a result like 5-6 L/100 km.
@@MarekDrivesENG I drive a GLE. Consumption on the AT, DE highway is 6.9l+2.6kWh/100km. Average speed 101 km. Trip 680 km. Without charging on the trip. Otherwise, the pure electricity consumption is high. But I have 22" wheels.
I used to be a fan of BMW ... but not anymore ... after their last 5 or so years ... with the bad design & the un-welcome black accents. However, X5 PHEV is ok ... minus the black accents, of course. Mercedes ... with their bulky design style ... not so good, too ... but ... if Cayenne Coupe PHEV would be out of discussion ... the Merc would be my choice. 👍
I wonder if the BMW with its inline 6 has a longer front end. I think both of these are handsome vehicles but I'd never need such a big vehicle. I'd always go for the X3 or GLC.

Wow what a comprehensive comparison, one of a kind really. This is special 👌🏽
Thanks. I try :)
Very good side by side comparison, please continue this way in future.
Awesome review, as usual. The music - what a banger! Great job, Marek!
Much appreciated!

Well done comparison review Marek!
At those price points they should both be reliable and perfect. Sadly they are not.
These cars are designed for lease, you lease for 3 years and pass it back, it's not designed to be reliable

Good review of 2 good cars. I would not buy any of those, but I would take the Benz as a gift.
