Is that a big time heavy equipment dump truck shirt I see? I don’t usually buy RUclips merch but as a kid growing up I watched vhs videos on repeat of heavy equipment so that really speaks to me.
Great detailed video, 15 years ago it was so hard to find an ae86 since all the old men were still driving them or they were hidden away not running, the popularity hadn't hit yet so when I finally found a GTS hatch within a mile of my home I had to make a deal and wow talk about being underwhelmed haha if you didn't hold it at limiter when you dump the clutch you were guaranteed to have a lame time with no tire spin. But once I dropped a ar101 4agze in it on 15lbs of boost things were incredible and so fun!
I daily drive a 2013 Toyota 86. While it's not the AE86, I can really feel it's heritage while driving it. It's such a joy to drive and you're right about driving a slow cars fast. While it's not going to win any red light sprints, I'm constantly smiling in the corners.
Love watching the driving portions of these videos for the edits. Jerry starting a question at Skirball and finishing it at the Getty is insider baseball, sure, but super satisfying.
Actually AE86 wasn't popular and sold well, so Toyota made a special edition called "Black Limited" for Trueno to boost sales. This fact also contributed for AE86's popularity in early drift scene. 'Cause we wanna have some fun with our car but don't have much money, y'know.
They sold almost 350,000 (checked and it’s actually 364868) AE86's, it was extremely popular in Japan, just look at any old Japanese videos or magazines and you'll understand how common they were. The black Limited came out at the end of the production run to boost waining sales of the Trueno model in particular, Levin was still popular.
@theholty I guess that 350,000 number came from the grand total of the whole E80 Corolla that also including sedan, hatchback and van. What I saw is, 1.In E80 era, they sold about 36,000 Trueno and 66,000 Levin in Japan. 2.Though I couldn't find the data for Levin, but they sold about 95,000 Trueno and both E90 coupe are described as "staggeringly sold well" or "the most sold generation of Levin/Trueno" at least in Japan.
Oh, and you know why AE86s were popular in Japan back in the day? The used AE86s were dirt cheap and the reason is they were not popular choice of car especially used in general back in the '80s and '90s. My dad described "AE86 was a coupe for poor", and the episodes like "AE86 for 2,000 dollars is VERY pricey" or "I got AE86 from a junkyard for 500 dollars" can be found.
@@ぢょんすみす-t7b nope, according to Toyota’s own data and list of chassis numbers, 364868 AE86s specifically were built. That’s why they were so cheap on the used market, because there were so many of them. I don’t where you’re getting your data from but it’s wrong, my own personal AE86 Trueno is chassis number 101461.
@@theholty Well, I still can't find the data you reffered, maybe something not online kind of phisical archive, but since there're roughly 3.3 million E80 Corolla are made, so, roughly 300,000 something AE86 worldwide, I guess it is, sorry. What I saw are just random Japanese online articles, not a lot to back them up.
Dai is such a great guy! Super chill and fun to talk to. I met him at the CTMP IMSA this year and we had a good chat. Btw this video format is really nice! Good job guys!
People always didn't mention that the 4AGE are pretty bullet proof too. Never had issue with mine, TVIS still works fine almost 30 years later, it just undergo basic maintenance like oil changes etc, and it is non-interference engine (mine is the first version and the engine is fine after the timing belt broke).
The AE86 platform touched so many Toyota cars throughout the 80s and 90s. I have had several mid to late 80s 4wd Tercel Wagons. Many AE86 parts bolt right onto that car, it's kind of crazy. Especially suspension components and a handful of drivetrain components. You really can't overstate how much fun the 80s toyotas are to drive. Their analog setup allows for a crazy amount of feedback from the drivetrain/suspension. You feel everything and you can respond accordingly. They're really some of the most fun cars to drive. The 4wd tercels are unlike anything else I've ever driven or heard of. They are full-time FWD and a 6 speed manual transmission. The kicker is you can pop it into 4wd at any time with a nice lil lever, which also unlocks the 6th gear which is an EL granny gear. This means you can enter corners in FWD, use the e-brake to break your rear loose, then when you hit the corner's apex 4wd is just a lil lever pull away which allows you to power out of the corner with crazy handling/speed. With a lil practice you can also pop it out of 4wd at very fun times. Toyota also used really interesting gearing to get as much power out of these small engines as they could. The 4wd tercels only had ~55 hp from the factory but they drive pretty well. You can get up to freeway speeds pretty easily while getting 35mpg or higher, my best was usually around 45mpg out of a 1985 carbed 1.5L engine. People who have driven the ae86 platform really understand how much fun these cars are in a variety of environments. Absolute legends. If a person has owned an AE86 it will almost always be their favorite car of all time. They're just so much fun.
Absolutely love this kind of warm hearted interview with such a personal and interesting story. Dai is a great personality and it was so fun seeing him in this video, keep it up fellas!
I still remembered the channel hooligans posted they bought a cheapest AE86, an SR5. Of course it's cheap because it's not an AE86 but an AE85. i commented and tried to correct them but a fanatic fan slam on me that in USA are all AE86 including the SR5 which has the engine of 3AU. It's hard to argue to people but I'm glad to this channel that provide information the CORRECT ONE 😊
Depends on market location car was sold at. North American market never got the weaker ae85 chassis. All were ae86 and Toyota USA vin system used ae86 in vin to identify car as 4ac model, and ae88 as car sold with 4age. Chassis stamps on all north American rwd corollas 1985-1988 got the ae86 stamp. Initial D obv took place in Japan which had a different variants of that model “corolla” to sell locally.
I remember when these where $5k. My bro had a coupe and we had a blast racing corvettes, mustangs or whatever. It was not fast but it was such a little beast and it got 30MPG.

What I saw is,
1.In E80 era, they sold about 36,000 Trueno and 66,000 Levin in Japan.
I love engineering time with Jeremiah.
You ain't a JDM fan if you never lusted over this car before.
what do you mean "before"
Poser 😆
Guess I'm a "fake" fan, then. This car is overrated trash
Forgive me for only lusting over celica All-Trac’s since I was 7 and not the 86 🤣
Too big and heavy
Script of your videos is top tier guys, I don't think I have ever seen better written content!
Crazy how a car can look better than 99% of girls. Love this things

I love Dai man. He's such a cool and chill dude. Looking forward to the projects in the future!
Best car channel on youtube right now
Not a big anime or anime culture guy, but Jerry and Zach make everything interesting
Legendary guest host Dai, from the first Formula D in the US. I remember him from Super Street and Import Tuner magazines from back in the day!
Video thumbnail - oh another 86 retrospective
Hit play - hey is that Dai?
Dai is such a great guy! Super chill and fun to talk to. I met him at the CTMP IMSA this year and we had a good chat. Btw this video format is really nice! Good job guys!
People always didn't mention that the 4AGE are pretty bullet proof too. Never had issue with mine, TVIS still works fine almost 30 years later, it just undergo basic maintenance like oil changes etc, and it is non-interference engine (mine is the first version and the engine is fine after the timing belt broke).
Makes my heart happy to see these two killing it! JER & JOBEY 4 PRES
Sometimes these guys remind me of when I was growing up watching top gear. Thanks as always lads and keep it up
This car is the reason I got my Honda prelude! Mainly cause of the pop ups😂
Jeremiah’s interviews are giving Nardwar meets Hot Ones vibes but for the automotive world, and I am here for it!
every time i hear an 86, cant help but think how good of a job initial d made with the engine sound
I first came across dai in an issue of D-Sport magazine back in the day. He has been one of my top 10 drivers ever since.
Absolutely love this kind of warm hearted interview with such a personal and interesting story. Dai is a great personality and it was so fun seeing him in this video, keep it up fellas!
Absolutely love the lie detector bit. Is it accurate? No shot. Is it super fun and genuine? All day. Great stuff.
Loving it. Dai contented speaks to my heart. Any chance for some Dai collab merch?
These videos are so genuine... love this style.
I remember when these where $5k. My bro had a coupe and we had a blast racing corvettes, mustangs or whatever. It was not fast but it was such a little beast and it got 30MPG.
