GREAT STRAIT FORWARD VIDEO!! Thanks for the tip removing the one 10mm bolt and folding the plastic cover back!! Made the job a breeze!! Still doing things on the ground at 68 yrs old!! Car shifts real smooooooth! THANK YOU!!
Great video, I've change mine a couple of times already just the way you explained it here, very simple. I came here to refresh my memory, I learned from you btw. You make it real easy for people like me to understand. Thanks for the great info, I really appreciate it !!!
I remember my father taking our car to the local shop back in the 70's to get the fluids changed and I specifically remember the mechanic would drain, fill, run the engine for 5 minutes, drain and fill again. That was hardcore man!
As always, great video. I did the drain and fill on my 2013 Escape 2.0 at 45,000 miles. Wish I would of done it sooner. Will do it often, like every 20K more than likely. IMPORTANT NOTE. My 2013 Escape does NOT have a dip stick. On the drivers side of the transmission a few inches up is a fluid level plug. When your vehicle is level, warmed up to temperature, the fluid should be even with this hole for proper fluid level. Man, I would give up one of my pinkys for a hydraulic 4 point lift.
Was going to pay $240.00 to $400.00 for trans flush but what for when I can replace oil myself. I couldn't find the mercon LV trans oil at Autozone, Oriellys, walmart etc so ordered it from EBAY today. I have 2010 Ford Escape 2.5 FWD auto 6 speed transmission. Will do update after I'm done. Sure glad I found your video. Save me a bundle of money. Thank you!
Well said. I did a 13 Taurus today and it took 6, but thank you for the vid dude. I enjoyed it. It reminded me of Honda trans service. Very straight forward. Simply drain and fill. Thanks for reminding us about LV. That's important.
Thanks for the hint on bending the plastic cover to expose the tran drain plug without having to remove the whole thing. Again, thanks for sharing your expertise.
I always look for your videos when I am doing maintenance on one of my Ford's you continue to have tricks or suggestions that help get the job done much quicker. Keep up the Great videos!
Good point about frequent service. When I do this service, I clean my new fluid tank and then add the fluid to it. I don't want to mix fluids. So important! Good video dude.
Nice one FTM! i used this proc-video earlier! originally, the problem is when this guy's wife's driving this Ford Escape every time from a full stop, then let go and press the gas pedal. She feels something slipping "like between 1st , 2nd and 3rd gear. I test driven it and confirm the problem. Check the level of the fluid before drain, and found out the dipstick is not touching fluid anymore. WOW!, ok tried it for 3 times and still no oil at the end of the dipstick. Then follow this procedure, and voila! slippage was not felt but advised him to monitor it still when the wife's driving it. TY!
Thanks a ton, I've learned so much good advice from your videos for my '12 Escape. This is so easy, definitely smart to do, so long as you do it right. Next thing on my list, that's for sure.
They really don't want us changing this trans fluid. I bought the Haynes manual just to get more clarification on quarts and refill and all that. They had NOTHING to say about the trans. They literally skipped over it, lol. I changed the trans fluid once following this vid 1.5 years ago. It's time to do it again.
Already a fan. I like your style and your explanations. Just bought a 2011 fusion sel and barely has 60k looking to do a fluid drain and fill mainly for my own records and start with a fresh schedule
thanks i was under the impression that changing the auto fluid in this had to be done by a technician as it was very complicated... boy thats easy and i will be doing it next week. so thanks a lot :)
Great Video. Just changed my transmission fluid with confidence. Drives better now and saved myself a few bucks. Thanks. Couldn't find the fluid except at dealership which wasn't overly expensive.($10CAD/litre)
Nice video. I think I may have gone a bit heavy on the drain plug torque for my wife's. I also wish she had the metal end on the dipstick vs the plastic one. Its hard to read sometimes. It seems to be distorted by the residual fluid in the dipstick tube.
Thank you for this! I was contemplating paying for a transmission flush for my 2012 Escape (4cyl 2wd). Every place I called said they had a universal fluid or wanted to charge me $200+ because they'd have to change my filter too. One said they'd,"...have to drop the pan and change that filter..."
I did the first fluid change on my 2010 Fusion with Valvoline Maxlife Full Synthetic ATF marked Dex/Mercon LV. The transmission shifts and transfers power better than it ever did with the factory Mercon LV. I will be from now on be doing a drain and fill with Valvoline Maxlife every 30,000 miles. I did a full flush the first time to replace all of the old Motorcraft LV with Maxlife.
Brandon, I just replaced my condenser on my 2009 Escape and am going to add a couple of quarts o fhe Valvoline Max Life Full Synthetic Mercon LV. I hope it woks well with mixing it in with what is in there already. The guy at Napa said it would be fine. Glad to hear that yours is running good with this product.
Thank you brother for the video. That was easy. It took me about 15 min altogether. You could not have made it any clearer. 2011 escape 2.5 99347miles.
if you own this car get rid of it. The "sub frame" rotted out, and our tire axle collapsed WHILE DRIVING. It is an inherit flaw in the car design I learned later that FORD knows about, and did not notify the community (sound familiar?). We had to junk the car and got -0- for it. when I did this job I put in the amount I took out. Good luck.
Nice video! I do this every 2-3 5000 mile oil changes on our 2011 Escape. Very easy to do although I didn't realize getting the fluid level exactly correct was that important. I've found ours usually takes right at 5 qt. and it gets it pretty close. Whenever I find a vehicle with a drain plug and an easy to access dipstick on the transmission I'm surprised now-a-days! Ive noticed a couple of our higher end auto parts stores around here sell the Motorcraft LV fluid so its very easy to find.
Hello sir, thank you for the very informative video. I own a 2009 Ford Escape XLT. Is the process the same as shown here? Mercon LV, no filter? I'm planing on doing it myself, your response would be really appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Your correct about converter plugs. I was a Lincoln Mercury dealer mechanic from 1972-1980. We did a lot of C6 ,C4 FMX, etc trans service .We always drained converters, they held a lot of oil. Do you think changing only 5 qts is enough? I haven/t looked up what 2012 Escape 6 speed holds total yet. Thanks FTM
I have a 2010 ford fusion for three years. It was a used card. Everything is good since then. But recently the transmission light showed up while i was driving in the city. At that moment, the shifting was weird but it was still functional to drive. I decided to stop and restarted it, and the light went off and everything was normal. Same problems happened twice again after the initial one. I did not want to create additional damage and i brought the vehicle to the shop. They told me there were not any codes stored in the computer and the trans worked very well. They also recommended to do a ATF flush. I did everything they told me. But, the same problem happened again after couple days. I am writing to you because you are professional on ford, and i am wondering why there is no codes and why the wrench light was on but disappeared after restart. Also, do you think that dealer's scan machine is better than regular auto shop's?
What about an in-line filter in the cool send or return line? That way you trap more dirt and changing the filter in the future would be like a Saturn (good design).
Thanks for the video. Just a tip, is there a way to turn off the auto adjust light on your camera? It keeps alternating between light and dark. Maybe get some external lights under there?
No worries. Appreciate your work. They were going to charge me like $200 to do this. And they wonder why people don't take their car to the dealer for service.
Great vid - thank you so much. But I'm only finding out about this now on my second hand 2011 Escape - 186000m! Is there anything special I should do now besides change the fluid immediately? 😔
@@edgarj11 I did it yes. It's seems ok. Maybe changing gears at a higher rpm than I would like. 2.5-3k. Pushing 200k on this 2011 Ford escape. Not a bad little car
i have a 2005 Mercury Mariner 4 cylinder 2wd base. How do I found out what transmission I have... or are all models using Mercon LV fluid? By the way great video... very informative.
I too, had a hard time finding Mercron LV in the Detroit area. Then, I found Wolf's Head has LV at my favorite auto parts store. Works great in our 2010 4-cyl Escape w/6 speed trans. Some videos show a small amount of fluid drains out. That's what mine did. Then, replace, drive a few blocks AND REPEAT THREE TIMES (total). How are you able to get so much out at once?
I am hoping you can answer this question. Does it have to be Motorcraft Mercon LV or can you use something like Pennzoil Platinum LV Multi-Vehicle ATF. I live in Canada and the Mercon LV at the dealer costs $15.00/ quart. There are cheaper options from different oil companies. Will they do the same or not?
@@justlg3359 This was on my 2009 Ford Escape Limited with the 3.0 vs. It took 3 liters. Mine used 6 liters which is 6.34 Quarts. But I started with 5 liters to start and then I kept checking and adding once it got hot.
Nice work. How about a 2018 Ford Escape 1.5 L Turbo? No topside trans dipstick or fill spot. I see where you’d drain it but is there a fill plug and would you fill it similar to a differential, let it drip out the top of the fill plug. I’d love it if you did this same procedure in the new 18 Escape.
Just did a drain and fill on my 2010 Escape with 105,000 miles. I don't think the previous owners ever changed the fluid, and what came out was pretty black but no chunks or sludge. I ended up doing the drain and fill 3 times with a drive between each one to bring it up to temp. and get it flow through the transmission. My local Ford dealer told me they do the drain and fill 3 times if the fluid is very dirty. Mine took 5-1/2 quarts to fill after draining.
During the flush, all that dirt and crud from the lines gets dumped right into the valve body too.I know a transmission repair shop that sees this a lot doing valve body cleanings that is more than the flush
Brian, you didn't explain how to get the old fluid out of the torque converter. Could you expand your explanation on why or is it really needed? Thanks, love your videos.
Very good video......I am going to be doing this. I have a 2006 escape.... the owners manual says 10 quarts trans fluid.... is that correct???... seems like a lot. Also...... should I just go with mercon v ??
Really helpful. Any good substitutes for the plug? Apparently they were discontinued. Mine is leaking and didn't know if there's an easy place to find a replacement.
That was a very good video. Thanks. I had no idea that the transmission fluid needed to be changed that frequently. I will get right on it. My question however is in regards to my rear end noise, I am thinking it in the differential. It may be leaking oil. It is wet on the bottom of case but it doesn't drip on the driveway. What can I do to fix it . FYI I did tow a bass boat last year. I won't tow with now because of the noise.
As you said, the torque spec for the drain plug is 106 inch pounds, but it is a little less when you “lubricate” the threads with the thread sealant…On my 6F35 drain plug, I used the thread sealant, then I went from 75 to 90 inch pounds in 5 pound increments. I stopped at 90 inch pounds because taking a lubricated thread to the 106 inch pound spec would have been to much. This drain plug is a NPT fine thread slightly tapered plug. So just be aware of this so you don’t over tighten and crack the aluminum transmission case, or strip out the transmission case drain hole threads…
You have helped me so much with my Ford Fusion in the past I have one question regarding my brake system. I recently had the electric traction control light and brake light and ABS light come on on my Dash and says check brake system on the display. What is the most common problem? 2010 Ford Fusion.
Thanks man! You saved my #$%!!!! BTW, what camera do you use to film your videos? Very clear and great audio. Thanks again for all your videos and time.
Great videos, you are a real gift to Ford owners. I have a 2015 Fusion 2.5L with a 6 speed, is it like the Focus and should I drain the oil at 30,000 miles or so. The book says it good for the life of the transmission and you don't need to change it. Thats a pretty tall claim. I'm in my 70's and don't do the social stuff. I hope I can find the answer when you post it. Thanks, Mark
@FordTechMakuloco Can you please upload a video of a transmission fluid change on a Focus with 2L 5 speed manual transmission? Model year 2015 or equivalent?! Once again, your videos are amazing!Cheers from Canada.
I have a 2006 Fusion 2.3. In your video you say the transmission filter is not replaceable, yet the auto parts store sold me a filter ... did they make a mistake? I also got the specific transmission fluid from the Ford dealer you mentioned Mercon LV. I'm going to follow your video step by step as this will be the first time I've done this ... however, I am confused now about the filter. Thanks
+FordTechMakuloco Alright. So, I jacked up the car and got under it. One of the things you didn't mention when talking about the many bolts you have to remove is how hard some of them are to get to. The frame is preventing me from getting to 2 of them. Having removed most of the 10mm bolts, I find that the cover is starting to drip, a lot. I see a large plug-like knob on the bottom of that cover. Is that the drain plug? (Thus, different from the Escape you worked on in the video?) I haven't pulled the case because it looks like it will spill out if I do.
+FordTechMakuloco Just an update on the 2006 Fusion. What I thought was the drain plug on the casing is actually the drain plug. I needed an 8mm hex to break torque and unscrew it. I was never able to get all of the 10mm bolts off of the casing, so I could not get to the filter to change it. Those bolts are in almost impossible places to get either a wrench or a screwdriver with an adapter into. Anyhow, I managed to drain all of the fluid and replace it. I put in 4 quarts even though the Ford dealer seemed to think I needed 7. Checking the dipstick it was at the second notch after the 4th quart of fluid. I ran the car to get it warm and shifted through the gears. However, have not put any more fluid in until I know exactly how much more I should. If you could answer that I would be grateful. Thank you again for your tutorials and information.
Great video Do you recommend or not recommend adding a quart of Lucas for an an Escape with over 170 miles and sometime downshifting hard as it passes 40 MHP
If you could please help me with re installing the drain bolt. When I took it out it wasn't seated all the way down to the transmission it had about 3 threads exposed. So when I re installed it it didn't seem to ever bottom out and when i got to about the same amount the bolt was before removing it I stopped. I used thread sealant but just not sure if I went too far or not enough. Why do they design the screw so that it doesn't seat all the way down flat like a typical drain bolt? I used a torque wrench that only has a minimum setting of 10 ft/pounds which is 120 inch pounds I know it's more than the recommended 106 inch pounds but I didn't torque it until it clicked because i was worried I was going too far. Please help put my mind at ease. Thanks for all the help!
My car (2013 Ford Fusion 2.0) doesn't have a dipstick. Just has the yellow cap on top. How would you know exactly how much to put in? Manual says 9 quarts which I'm sure is the entirety of the transmission including the converter. For just a drain and fill do we just estimate 6 quarts? Thanks brother. And also I'm assuming you add it in from the transmission cap where there is no dipstick. Some places say they shoot it in from the bottom. Thanks again.
Is it ever to late to change transmission fluid? And would it be best to leave it alone? I remember being told a long time ago, if you change your fluid in a car with too many miles you'll end up with problems. I have a 2012 Fusion with 175k miles on. I currently have no problems. I bought the fluid 4 years ago, but never got around to doing it. I'd like to do it this weekend but I'm a little hesitant. What are your thought?
Hi, How do I know the type of transmission that my ford escape has it, mine it is xlt mod 2008, I ask you because I just saw another video where you changed the oil trans fluid in a ford escape first generation. I am kind of confused, thanks for the help. by the way, good videos of yours.
Thank you for the videos! Subscribed to your channel! My car (2013 Fusion Titanium 2.0L Ecoboost) does not have a dipstick, though. Should I just drain it into a pan with measurements and then just put the same amount of Mercon-LV back into it?
Great video, thanks. Your tutorial gave me the confidence boost to try it myself. I poured the old fluid back into the bottles, but I don't know what to do with it. Can it be recycled?
Thanks for all your videos! We just bought a 2012 escape with 40000 miles on it. We're noticing a noise, especially when slowing down without braking. Consumer reports talks about a significant number of transmission problems for this year Escape. The dealer said they don't hear anything. I assume the transmission was serviced to be CPO. Any suggestions from here?
im a big fan... i find your videos very helpful i recently purchased a 2006 ford escape xlt 3.0 4 wheel drive what type of transmission fluid as well as how many quarts would i need to do this also is there a filter thats changable or is it built in like the one in your above video... thanks
Great info here! I am glad i did find this info. I have an 2010 Ford Escape hybrid who is just not changing gears when is running for a while. When cold is just doing fine, after 10-20 miles run is not shifting gears easy,I have to take of my foot from the gas and spin again, and after that is changing gears. I was told that the filter may be clogged( car has over 100000 miles, never change trans fluid,...i got it as is-used car). You are stating that the filter is not changeable, what has to be done in my case? Thanks
Thanks for the great vid. Need your help please. I have a 2011 Ford Fusion with about 121k. Sad to say I never changed my transmission fluid. I know face palm. I got use to the low maintenance on my 97 Camry. Now my fusion shakes a but when going less than 30 mph and the engine like just came on. Sight unseen, your thoughts please.
This is a great video on how to change the transmission fluid, thank you, but how do you change the fluid in the rear differential on the 4WD Escapes? I've heard it's a "lifetime fluid", is this true? I have a 2010 Ford Escape V6 Limited 4WD. P.S - Subscribed!!! :)
+Michael LaPenna the active torque coupling is separate but the rear differential can be serviced with 80W-90 like any normal differential by removing the diff cover to drain and clean out.
I know this question does not pertain to this video, but could you do a video or pass along some info on changing the rear diff fluid on a 2014 Edge AWD or similar. Concerning the correct fill level. I never got out the amount the manual says the capacity is? Your videos are great and very helpful. Thanks for taking the time to post them
Great video. I just did my transmission in my 2011 Escape and 4.5 quarts came out so I put 4.5 back in. My dipstick is different from yours as it has a white plastic part at the bottom and it's a bit difficult to read. One side always it up to the top but the other side it only goes up to the halfway mark.
The level stick you've used to check the level is the engine oil level stick, the transmission level stick has a dotted white plastic piece s at its lower end
I have a 2010 Escape with 170000 km (111000 miles) on the original fluid...no issues YET... I am going to change the fluid but was wondering if I could use my fluid extractor and pull fluid out the fill tube....... is there any concern or issues doing that? THANKS FOR THE AWESOME VIDEOS
I have a 2011 Ford Fusion 2.5L 92,500 miles. Trans fluid never been changed. Is it safe to change it now? I am afraid it will start slipping after changing since it hasn't been changed for a long time.
I love your videos brother. I have a 2012 fusion sport awd. would my plug be in the same spot? also, would i use the same oil as you did? or is there a different fluid for awd? how many quarts would i need?
I have a 2005 ford escape automatic transmission v6. In the manual it says use only Macon atf. I've been to many stores and I can't find Macon. They have Macon V, Macon LV but nothing just Macon. Any suggestions? Oh by the way the manual also says 9.6 quarts. Is that possible?
@@FordTechMakuloco yep, I did it yesterday. But still having problems with transmission shifting into overdrive. It's an automatic and goes through 1,2,3, fine but in between 3, and overdrive it hesitates big time. It's weird , like it kinda hesitates and shimmer. Someone said something about a high speed sensor might have gone bad. I looked at another RUclips video about the sensor or selinoid and it looks like a bitch to get too.
My Explorer has the 6F55 and I was wondering. I did these drain and fill procedure. I only got 6 of the 12.7 quarts out. I did this at 50K miles. Is there a better way for me to do this? Also, are you nearby Maryland? I'd rather come to a tech who knows what they are doing. Your expertise is worth the $$$ imo.
I'm purchasing a '12 Fusion this week with 52,000 miles on it. In your other video you said to go ahead and do a drain and fill, then another every 30k. My question is, since this is the first time, should I do more than 1 drain and fill the first time? If not, I assume it's OK to mix the Mercon LV with whatever Ford puts in there at the factory? Thanks again. Your videos are great.
e mikey You will be ok but it would be best to do it now and again at 60k and then go forth from there as stated. Yes use Mercon LV that is the same as the factory fill.
well changed a, 2010 mariner, 2015 escape, 2016 explorer all mercon LV and just over 4 qts each. RockAuto was the cheapest even with shipping. Also bought motorcraft air filters.
Is this how a Ford dealership would change it? Just curious because wouldn't there still be old fluid in the torque converter? I mean you probably replaced 85% of the fluid, but would Ford care if you swap most of it vs all of it?
Thanks for posting this. my 2010 Ford Fusion v6 has been shifting rough and has poor throttle response. I change the fluid myself but was debating taking it somewhere to get it flushed for peace of mind and hopes of improvement, but after watching i'll continue to just drain and fill more often. Any ideas why my throttle response might be subpar? Seems to hesitate on the bottom end.
Dan Gower On a 2010 my first thought is the electronic throttle body so very common and they are very cheap right now especially on amazon. Here is the updated part for yours-www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EGX15TC/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00EGX15TC&linkCode=as2&tag=fordt-20&linkId=M4RL6ZU7OQYFGWOHI am actually going to order a couple of them and stock up for customer cars.
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the advice. I can't remember why but 2 years ago I had to clean the throttle body out, can't remember if it was throwing a code or why I had to do it. I'll look at replacing it with the updated part. I was also thinking about fuel injectors possibly? I've never even checked them (my mechanical skills stem from motorcycles so I'm used to carbs) do you have any videos on how to inspect the fuel injectors to make sure they aren't clogged with carbon? Something I'd just like to look at anyways to make sure they are OK, I do get pretty bad gas mileage too.

Really? How do you do a full flush?
How many quarts did it take to drain n refill.

@@skittykitty1000 I have a 2011 Ford fusion 2.5 but everyone says use the Marcon LV
Good luck.
Dude - loving every one of your videos - great work!
Thanks!
I have the 2008 hybrid, the manual calls for mercon V. Would it be a better choice to change oil with the LV? It has 50,000 kms since its last change.
Great video man! I just did this on my 2010 escape 2.5L XLT. Super easy
Walmart sells it too.
Love all of your videos n advice ....curious if you recommend 5w-30 in the 2.5 Fusion or stick with 5w-20? Thanks!
+Daniel Peters Ford has deemed them worthless and does not recommend them anymore.
Thank you for the comprehensive and very easy explanation on to fix and maintain 2008-2012 ford escape 👍👍👍
My manual says 9 quarts ? For my 09 escape
Nice to know this about the type of fluid to use and why, got an escape coming in. Thanks, and love your video's !
This is an awesome video! Thanks so much! I have a 09 with 151k never changed, what is the risk of doing this at this point?
as always great info, now any information on the Aisin AW21 used in my 2009 ford Fusion?
Thanks for the video. Just a tip, is there a way to turn off the auto adjust light on your camera? It keeps alternating between light and dark. Maybe get some external lights under there?
Yup this was the early days my new videos don't do that.
@MrSplinter345 did you chang the transmission fluid? I'm at the same problem but mechanic told me to not do it because of damage on the transmission.

So what did u use and how did it go?
@@justlg3359 I ended up using Motorcraft Mercon LV trans fluid. I got it for $11.00 per liter. It went good.
@@MarkK01 ok good, also which vehicle do you have and is it 4 cylinder or 6? And how much Quarts were used?
@@justlg3359 This was on my 2009 Ford Escape Limited with the 3.0 vs. It took 3 liters. Mine used 6 liters which is 6.34 Quarts. But I started with 5 liters to start and then I kept checking and adding once it got hot.
Nice work. How about a 2018 Ford Escape 1.5 L Turbo? No topside trans dipstick or fill spot. I see where you’d drain it but is there a fill plug and would you fill it similar to a differential, let it drip out the top of the fill plug. I’d love it if you did this same procedure in the new 18 Escape.
very good clear video *****
same process for Ford Escape 2011 ???
Serious question - should a do-it-yourselfer NOT be doing this procedure then?
Brian, you didn't explain how to get the old fluid out of the torque converter. Could you expand your explanation on why or is it really needed?
Thanks, love your videos.
In the video you recommend Mercon LV only. Is this Motorcraft only or any brand advertising Mercon LV?
The specific additive package found in Mercon Lv that is needed for these transmissions can only be found in this fluid- amzn.to/2eaLaHH
From Buffalo, N.Y. Thanks for posting this video.
Mine is leaking and didn't know if there's an easy place to find a replacement.
very informative, well done and clearly spoken. thank you!
I use my iphone 90% of the time.
Thanks
+Daniel Hendrix Only the 6 speed is not yours is a 5 speed FNR5 basically a 4F27E
+FordTechMakuloco Excellent. Thank you.
I have a 2020 Ford Fusion S and I have 82k and never changed the fluid but I am going to start getting it done every 50k miles. Wish me luck!
Thanks for all the help!
change twice works real nice extra 20 bucks mercon LV vavoline
What you end up doing?
I did 1 fluid change at 175k and 2 more at 225k. I now have 250k miles on it. No issues.

Thank you for the videos! Subscribed to your channel! My car (2013 Fusion Titanium 2.0L Ecoboost) does not have a dipstick, though. Should I just drain it into a pan with measurements and then just put the same amount of Mercon-LV back into it?

+Michael LaPenna the active torque coupling is separate but the rear differential can be serviced with 80W-90 like any normal differential by removing the diff cover to drain and clean out.
would you recommend changing the fluid in the active torque coupling as well?

Fuel injectors are not a concern on these I wouldn't even waste the time. Go after that throttle body.
FordTechMakuloco Cool thanks for your help, I'll let you know if I see improvement!
Let me ask you this is this a reliable transmission
I've had 3 cars with it and no trouble from the transmissions.
