You have to wonder why some of the lakers don't implement some of the basic technologies like the bubbling system, it'd make their trip through the ice faster and more fuel efficient.

I saw the ship two years ago at the dock in Cheboygan, Michigan in July. They have a hamburger drive-in that serves some great food. It's located off US 23 on the way to Rogers City.

somehow or someway i have a problem with this. who is paying for the cost guard to make way for the ore carriers a big profit along the great lakes when they should be in frog pond for the winter? correct me if i'm wrong, some major ore company is making big money for delivey of materials that cost us as taxpayer's for them to deliver the materials

Who pays for the Dept of Transportation to plow highways for some major company (like FedEx or Amazon perhaps) to make big profits delivering stuff?

We all, in some form or another, receive benefits from the taxpayers for which we don't pay (public schools, police protection, etc.).

Boats could be carrying coal for power plants to keep people warm...if it is iron ore...it’s to keep the steel mill running so the auto plant can keep running...

If there was a Starship Enterprise of the Great Lakes, look no further. I think she's as great as her legendary predecessor, and I don't care what anyone says either!

More versatile and updated I agree. But you can't compare it to a vessel that is almost twice it's weight and just a little more HP to who is better. Once you get that 6000tons moving on the older Mac, not much could stop it. The new Mac really hasn't been tested in some of the nasties that the great lakes can produce. It's almost like comparing the CGC Healy against the Polar Star. JMO from a 140' WTGB commissioning crew member

tc1uscg, pretty certain that with 60 years more advanced design new Mackinaw is at least as capable to breaking ice.
Though it missed oblique icebreaker concept for being able to open wider channel in thinner ice:

OMG this will be happening soon this winter
The freighter should be left there for the winter

It appears the Makinaw is a duel purpose ice breaker and aids to navigation buoy tender.

She is. One thing I learned before moving away from the river was the Mackinaw doesn't take any shit form the ice

Not much of a battle, both her & predecessor are amazing vessels.

People forget about about the CGC Westwind (was homported in Milwaukee till 83). But would would you expect from a Arctic breaker.

Instead of investing all this time and energy into the clear up why don't they identify who is dumping all that plastic into the river in the first place? Make them pay for it.
