Served on the USCGC Bristol Bay, a Great Lakes icebreaker. Very cool video of the CCG Terry Fox. I remember his story, it is great they commissioned a ship with his name.

I sailed on this ship and the sister (MV Kalvik) when they were new 1984 for Gulf Canada .BHP 28,200 from 4 Stork-Werkspoor Main Engines. She is a Class IV icebreaker rated at continuous speed of 4 knots thru 4 ft of ice.

@ ....that would be Burrard Yarrows in North Vancouver. Her sister, the Terry Fox (now owned by the Coast Guard) was built across the strait in Victoria. One other vessel built for Gulf Canada the Miscaroo was built in Yates as well. The sister of the Miscaroo was built in Japan.

I worked several weeks on board as a service engineer for SW-Diesel. Main problem was fretting corrosion of fuel pumps due to the paraffin free fuel oil. I enjoyed our stay on board. Good food and felt save especially during blizzards. Landing a 737 on the ice was exiting!

R Loon, you must have been there in 1985/86, as this was around the time of ice landings. Yes,the food was outstanding, our crooks were chefs!!!

That was an awesome video of the ramming they often do. Thanks for posting that. Wish I’d been there!

Real ramming starts when there's pressure ridge reaching toward bottom:

Excellent view of the "rise up and crush down" function of an icebreaker.

  • @bgorveatt

See how she moves up on top of the ice and crushes it! I used to watch the ferries that went across the Prince Edward Island crossing do this!

Amazing footage! That force! Amazing footage! Is it possible for me to use and share this footage on my youtube page? I share footage from all kind of activities on our ocean. Cargo ships in the 1960s till now, oil rigs, fishing vessels, etc. Of course full credit will be given to the owner of the footage. Looking forward to your reply. Kind regards.

So Canadian coast guard's break ice way out of their own waters in North East Greenland?

    • @blinderII

The same thought popped into my head, but it occurred to me that it's possible they're still in Canadian waters.

I'm having a difficult time finding information on how to join the CCGS within their icebreaking factor. If anyone could shed any light on this or has any inside information I'd really appreciate a PM :)
