    The priest prayed to his own god and got no answer, he even claims to be angry with his god.
    It seems obvious to me then that he was curious, I can see him thinking: "My god doesn't say anything, but what about their gods say anything? Do they answer back?".
    This isn't just Athelstan's recognition of gods other than his own, but I can see that's where his fascination with the Norse pantheon begins.
    Of course, Ragnar rejects him, the Viking doesn't understand why the slave is so curious. "In Ragnar's world" everything comes at a price, I can hear Ragnar's thoughts: "Why would the slave be happy to talk about my gods? What does he get out of it?"
    And then when Ragnar says "That's yours world now" and later in other episodes the priest really tries to fit more and more into his "new world", at that point he couldn't swim back to England, he would have to resign himself a new life or die, so he tries (at that point, he was still far from wanting to become a martyr).

    To be honest he was safer as a slave lol. As a slave he is considered Ragnars property, so to harm him, would be equilvent to stealing or violating ragnars property.

      I think Athelstan meant that Ragnar has done little farm work (he has slave now to do that), has eaten up lots so he stores strength in his body, and has been meditating in the mountains nearby, quietly planning, getting mentally ready. I don't think Athelstan was privy to all the meetings Ragnar was having collecting allies, but he probably suspected that something along those lines was happening. That's what Athelstan meant when he said that.

      coalikesdesi it does not, Briton at that time had slavery and enslaved each other. It was only after the Norman conquest and the bridging together of the doctrines of the Catholic church and Celtic Christianity that slavery was outlawed in Britain.
      So for all of the hate englishmen have of the French, they can thank them for their stance of slavery.

Irish monks and some missionaries were sent to Britain. claiming one side 'treated their slaves better' as the other is a bit of wishful thinking.

    • @cowboybeboop9420
      @cowboybeboop9420 3 года назад +2

      Not really. Ancient Jewish slavery was basically their version of the welfare state today. When a man couldn`t was deeply in debt or had other such problems he and his family could for a time sell themselves in servitude to a master. The master however had to threat his "slaves" with respect and release them after a certain period of time.
      In fact this type of slavery was enjoyed by a lot of people back in the day and there were even stories in Ancient Judea when the master would have to release his slaves by force coz they didn`t want to leave. This is very different from treating your slaves as dogs.

      Athelstan was a Christian and during those times Christianity outlawed slavery. Serfdom was fine--binding yourself as a peasant to your lord's land--but not slavery.
