The problems with tv exclusive deals is killing new generation of fans. I'm a Dodgers fan and don't really feel like paying time Warner cable to just watch the Doyers play.
I remember 10-15 years ago, baseball players were the highest paid athletes. But recently NFL and NBA contracts have been insane, and baseball has stayed the same. I understand where baseball players are coming from. I remember ARod’s 10 year $325M deal back in like ‘07. That was unheard of in the NBA and NFL, but now it’s way more common.
The baseball market has died and they are vastly overpaid. They just want yearly amounts like in the nba instead of ot being spread over 10 years even though it is fully guaranteed.

I’m a die hard Brewers fan and it’s incredible how much success we’ve had being a small market team. That said, it gets annoying how we can keep good players or get great players because a large market team whether they’re a bad team or not can outbid us so easily. But also I think as a fan, it gets annoying seeing such huuuuuge contracts and then the player just sucks after that contract. I also think baseball needs a shorter season. It just goes on so long. I feel like a salary cap would immensely improve the game from a parity standpoint. It's a miracle my Royals won it all in 2015 with the way the game is
I don't. The NFL has a salary cap and there are still awful teams. The NBA has a salary cap and there are still awful teams. These awful teams aren't just in small markets either (looking at you Jets and Knicks) Salary caps don't fix bad ownership and poor scouting.
Look where the Royals are now. You win, dismantle, tank, rebuild and win. Meanwhile the Dodgers and Yankees still manage to stay competitive longer than most teams

If the pirates are getting payed over 70mil for legit just existing and then spend 34mil which means they are just pocketing 36mil that they are just given and then pocketing their own earnings.
They need a salary floor to make owners spend on their teams (and it somewhat satisfies players cuz they could get paid more just by the smaller market teams) & less years of team control on upcoming players w/ less ability to manipulate the service time (again player friendly since earlier ability to sign big contracts) They could speed it up too with stricter rules on batters getting in the box and going w/ less interval between pitches but tbh thats way below what they should prioritize
Tough thing is like Jeff said it becomes tough for owners justify spending money on their teams at a certain point when signing free agent X to a 50 m deal over 3 years still puts them probably 15 games worse than the dodgers or Yankees or Mets or Astros etc whoever is outspending everyone Becomes useless to spend 20-30 m more on your roster to get nowhere closer in a meaningful way to winning. And if you are still losing you still aren’t selling out or aren’t getting playoff revenue spending more on salaries is wasted money
A salary floor is needed but that comes with the revenue sharing and salary cap system that all the other major sports leagues have… because that what works and keeps teams competitive. The Cleveland Browns sucked for 20 years because they were a train wreck, not because they couldn’t afford to spend like the other teams. And that’s how it should be
Pat can't imagine how baseball makes so much lol. 30 teams playing 162 games each + the playoffs is how. and the MLB still makes less than 32 NFL teams playing 16 games + the playoffs
