As a Japanese, Ohtani and Yamamoto on the same team gives me goosebumps. Wish them and the Dodgers best of luck!!! Japan will support you! I've been following Ohtani and Yamamoto since they were rookies in Japan and now that they are playing at the highest level in the world, I'm so proud of them! They are two of the most hardworking players.
Japanese fans are the best! I ran into a bunch of Japanese fans going to a Dodgers-Angels game last year and their enthusiasm for baseball and Ohtani is so great to see. Truly a special offseason for Japanese baseball fans and Dodger fans.
I don't think it's just a sheer admiration for Ohtani that was a deciding factor for Yamamoto. There is a practical reason why being Ohtani's teammate would dramatically increase Yamamoto's exposure to Japan. The only free games (i.e. without paying MLB network international subscription) that will be broadcasted in Japan (by NHK-BS) will be Dodgers' games for a foreseeable future. If Yamamoto had joined a team other than Dodgers, the only time Japanese people will see him would have been in 30-second highlights every 6 days. Now he is a Dodger, not only all his starts will be closely viewed, but also the image of his chatting with his pal Shohei in the bench will be seen on Japanese TV every night. That pull had to be irresistible.
And, it's not that bad. Now, they have Shohei and Yamamoto. They have a lock on the Japanese sponsors. They'll probably get another $30M in ads from Japanese companies. They'll sell a few more seats (even though they have great attendance). Basically, they are shelling out $35M for Shohei and Yamamoto net cash. Pretty good deal. (doesn't include luxury tax)
Don't underestimate Ohtani's presence and influence on Japanese players. He basically has paved the road from Japan to the Dodgers and we will see more like this deal in the future because of Ohtani. After Yamamoto, Roki Sasaki, is the best pitcher in Japan and here in MLB, they think he is a real deal and that he's even better than Ohtani and Yamamoto. Sasaki wants to come to MLB but timing isn't right. He adores Ohtani so if the Dodgers want to get him, let Ohtani recruit him. Other than money, who can say NO to Ohtani. Now, Ohtani is a 3-way player: a pitcher, a batter and an excellent recruiting GM!!
What if I told you I'm a mastermind? And now you're mine It was all by design 'Cause I'm a mastermind ((Otani Shohei, 2023)) to Glasnow, Yamamoto 🔜 Sasaki
It's not that he is not ready or the timing isn't right. But it's his team not wanting to lose a player like him at this moment. That's why they told Sasaki no when he was asked to be posted. If I was him I would be a bit mad that they told me no. Because I could be on a team with Ohtani and Yamamoto dominating the MLB.
@@sinep8008 ,well, actually timing isn't right either. I agree that his team doesn't want to lose him now but Sasaki hasn't pitched a full season, yet. His body isn't strong enough to go through the rotation throughout the year. So, next year will be his big test.
yeah... I kinda feel bad for Ty even though he has no one to blame to beside himself. But I give him big thumb up for showing up and took in the harsh words.

Jeff Passan's right about Japanese players wanting to play alongside Ohtani. Remember that memorable speech Ohtani gave to his teammates prior to the WBC final game? "Let's stop admiring these guys(members of the team USA) for a moment, for at least one game. Because you're not going to overcome your opponent if you respect them more than you should." Well, there's a joke made about Ohtani's speech amongst his teammates. They were confused when Ohtani made his speech...All of his teammates were thinking "What's he talking about?? We admire you(Ohtani) the most. What do we need to be afraid of when we have Ohtani on our side!" That's the mindset they were in when they battled team USA for the title game.
It seems like last week, but it's been 23 years since I've heard Passan's unbridled sarcasm and signature laugh. We both had open door offices on the second floor of 744 Ostrom Ave as editors for the Daily Orange at Syracuse. From my desk in the Lifestyle/Features department, it was hard not to get distracted from the consistent laughter coming from the Sports guys: Pass, Greg Bishop (NY Times), Dave Curtis and Pete Thamel occasionally. I recall our QB, Troy Nunes, and his Neanderthal-like qualities being a hot topic. To this day, I still don't know how a bunch a kids (some possibly hungover) managed to show up five days a week at 4:00pm and have a paper ready to print by 2:00am. Then get up the next morning for class and do it again. Glad you're doing well Pass, but maybe it's time to retire your college haircut. :-)
With the specifics of Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s Dodger’s contract, it now seems obvious that they should have been the favorites all along. Yamamoto has been a Dodgers fan from childhood and is pals with Shohei Ohtani. Once Ohtani agreed to defer the majority of his contract, it gave the Dodgers monetary flexibility to offer Yamamoto all the money that he eventually signed for. Therefore, it seems the key was signing Ohtani then offering to defer so much of his contract. History could have been so different if Ohtani either signed with the Yankees out of Japan or this year as a free agent. But he was never interested in playing on the East Coast so it’s all moot. However, can’t help but wondering what would have happened if the Yankees had offered Yamamoto a $330 million contract over 11 years, $5 million than the Dodgers. If Yankees were really all in, is $30 million more too much to spend? Now, they have to hope whichever SP they can now sign will do the job; both Rodin and Cortes rebounds, several prospect produce and the injury bug doesn’t continue (which is another entirely different issue).
Many Japanese people do not feel that the Yankees' treatment of Hideki Matsui was warm at all. Compared to that, I think the Japanese players can play more comfortably with the Dodgers.
Mets needed to bid an offer that LA and Yankees couldn't match. Cohen made a bad decision. Cohen gave 43M each to 2 aging 40 year old pitchers last year and think 25 year old 3 time CY and MVP in Pacific league Yamamoto is worth less than that? 400M would have sealed the deal and hard for LA to match.

Jeff is really a cool dude for real. He’s the best source for baseball. I blame Ty more for making Yankees fans like myself believe that we actually signed a top 10 pitcher in the world.
@@joewell2709 That's fair, however, this dude seems to be more upset that someone even attempted to break news which is wild to hold breaking news hostage for a whole sport. Folks should be happy to share breaking news... and Ty isnt a scumbag for receiving wrong information. He was simply misinformed lol... Jeff took it too far.
hope he gets tommy jon. screw the dodgers and at this point baseball too. this is so stupid. I hope he never wins a tittle. never played 1 game and $325M? hope the dogers are cursed worse then the boston redsox.

My entertainment was not the YY news debacle, but Jerry Lewis and the a Yorki Yankster fan going back and forth
