Haha, just before watching this footage I was looking at the video of Adam playing the Koa Elkhorn at Carter's and had the same thought about his thumb.
I’m friends with Adam’s first mandolin teacher Audey Ratliff, I’ve played with Audey a lot over the years and Audey’s wrist hardly ever moves, he all the movement is in his thumb and index finger.
