My GF used to be a regular churchgoer. She'd go twice as far out of her way to give a lift to a fellow parishioner every Sunday. One time she was sick and called around trying to find a stand-in.
And it came to pass, that on that day, not one other parishioner was genuine enough to get off their lazy, pseudo-pious backside to provide a lift to church for one little old lady with a touch of dementia.
Not one of them gave a single solitary damn, so she asked me, an atheist, and I did it.

    • @DaBoomDude
      @DaBoomDude 10 дней назад +4

Honestly, i go to a church every Sunday- i even volunteer to do things and now... through it all, even now when my faith is honestly next to non existent i still keep going. Why?
The people at my church are kind helpful and like family to me. Ive known them my entire life (literally, the church is the same age as me) - more than 50% of our congregation volunteers someway or another. and i just find that even if i stop believing in god, I cant let them down. They stuck with me when i was going through hell at school - i went through periods of life where the only thing i was hanging out for was church on Sunday, where I could be with the people that actually cared about me.
over the years I've come to the realization that for me, church is not about god, or the teachings thereof. its about family, its about having a home to go to. and its about the friendships I've made along the way. Its warm and feels like a nice weighted blanket feels in the biting cold of winter.
If i was born into a place like that, but without god. I would be just as attached to it as i am now with my church. God is honestly for me. secondary or even lower, than the people who make up the church, who mentored me and helped me though touch situations. Who helped me through sensory issues i had when i was little, who encouraged me.
my church has always had the philosophy that we need to make everyone feel welcome. whether they're just visiting, or looking for a church. its taught me more about how to be kind and upstanding than i care to admit.

As a fellow Christian this scene hit home for me. Our main Preacher's eldest daughter got pregnant at seventeen, and he was forced to stepped down from his position for about a year and everyone acted like the family had the plague. My sister was good friends with another one of their daughters so our families were good friends. I remember how disgusted my mom and I were to how the family was being treated.
I also work in rehab facility for recovering addicts, and I normally take the clients to NA/AA meetings. One night we thought to try out a new meeting, but I took us to the wrong address which happened to be a church. When the gentlemen talked to us and we told them we were looking for a meeting, they looked at us like we were convicts.
Seriously, it's the hypocrisy that gives us Christians a bad name in society. As Jesus said "He who is without sin, cast the first stone."

Hypocrisy of some christians give good christians a bad rep.
because of it, i'm not super in with religion unlike my parents.
most openly religious people (i said openly coz they post or show how much they are devoted christians) i knew or met, are not what they seemed. as a child, i believed all religious church goers were good. turns out they arent all. one of my classmates, went from a christian school, he was taught stuff and all that but he's mean with his jokes. one of my first friends in college, regular sunday church goer and citing the bible, and yet she complained that our friend's mom was just asking her to look out for her daughter, our friend. i know shes right in a way that its not her responsibility but she was just a concerned mother for her kid which is one of our friends. my dad's siblings side, all of them religious, sometimes quoting verses and stuff. but behind that, they have a tight lip in their money and most of the time they dont even notice my dad, which is their elder brother. hell, i heard they didnt even help him in his teen years when he got by depression.
my list could go on and on.
they are all good people, but not perfect and not all the way good.

@@celiajane4250 I can assure you that at least it doesn’t stem for a lack of trying. There’s a scene in Young Sheldon where Meemaw reveals to Missy that the reason her mother turned religious is because of complications in Missy’s birth; vowing to embrace Christianity in her fear of losing her only daughter. There are only few acts of love bigger than to change who you are, and try to improve yourself, for the sake of those you love. I am a Christian and honestly, I have never been in these type of toxic church situations-ever. I grew up in a church that did not shun away anyone… we had this lady with a heroine addiction that became a Christian because she was treated with respect and kindness in my church (something that was rare for her) and this girl who got pregnant (who was already a member of the church) and her boyfriend left her… not a single person shunned her. If anything, everyone became protective of her and told her that they’d help how ever they can. That child is 8 years old now and while the dad is not in that picture, the mom found a good man who she married and he treats the child like his own. Honestly, church isn’t a place filled with good people but rather it’s a hospital for the broken. We need to care for one another and our actions should be a reflection of what Jesus would do.

Saw all the time through my youngest brother and mother. You mustn't have been that observant. My brother is openly gay, and dropped out of highschool due to the harassment, he was always ridiculed by the kids at church, and the congregation EXPECTED my mom to do all the IT work. You have to have such things either be happening to you in the moment, or be very observant to see them. Christians, in general are disgusting people that have been very disrespectful and nasty to my family. I no longer have any part of the organized religion and I'm happy about it. Chalk it up as the exception. I have seen the most devout, bible thumpers relatives being the most hypocritical. I am catholic. I have seen the church talk about giving back to the community as followers of christ. But the church would stiff the services of their gardners when they charged a reduced rate. The church had fundraising drives for a new pipe organ. We all chipped in and it only gets played in the english services but in the spanish services we get a dude playing the guitar taking down to us to join him in singing. I know the guy as my dad's coworker and family friend. When I donated my time at the church in my teens in packaging food for the needy. The church fired the main person in charge of food drive. Who was actually going to local stores and picking up canned goods and driving them back in his personal truck cause he was christian and not catholic. I Stopped attending church in protests due to the pedo scandals from a decade ago. When the catholic church preaches of Jesus shunning riches and the vatican rolling around like a pimp having gold plated everything. I respect a pimp more for being more honest than the pope.

I call it the "Married With Children" effect. In that old sitcom, the family would rip on each other, they'd rip on others outside the family, but they wouldn't tolerate much of outsiders ripping on them. They'd stand up for each other.
But I also call the "Married With Children" effect when someone tries to cancel something, but it backfires and skyrockets its popularity. Or when you can make an audience relate to a show by making the characters' lives worse off than the audiences'.

Things like literalism, and seriousness are very difficult to learn, but something like learning what you should and shouldn’t say is fairly difficult but still very possible, especially for someone like Sheldon who is so smart.

@@BisexualPlagueDoctor although Sheldon hasn't been confirmed as autistic because the producers wanted to avoid to be called ableists, he's autistic af. Autism is a variant of the neurological system and comes with differences and conditions that don't need to be cured because it's impossible curing genetic. Not understanding sarcasm, irony, not knowing how something you say can hurt someone, not understanding untold rules isn't about intellectual quotient. And young sheldon said it plain and clear but I see you missed that episode. There are more types of intelligences: Sheldon is very intelligent more of the norm in pragmatic and rational situations, but lacks of compassion, empathy and social skills. He also has sensory processing issues, so he can't tolerate some noises, food textures (like banana and I totally relate), touching, and therefor he pretends other sensorial stimulation that makes him feel good like the right place he can hear better. Missy, his twin, is the exact opposite, she's way more intelligent in begin perspicacious. And meanwhile many autistic persons try to mask their autistic traits and are able to learn some rules, many others aren't capable of doing this. And you know what? Sheldon may be annoying sometimes, but who are really jerks are his "friends" That constantly mock him and tell him how much they hate him basically, they should be the ones that should understand him the most and they are the meanest

John 8:7 says, “He who is without sin be the first to throw a stone.” It’s not a good look for the church as a whole to preach about love and forgiveness when they’re doing the exact opposite in the same breath because Georgie impregnated a girl 11 years older. What Georgie did was wrong but I promise you there are far worse things than that. Jesus welcomed everyone regardless of who they were and what they did.

This scene really struck me. As a fellow Christian, I felt it was sad - and telling. I think of the verse "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone." (John 8:7) Have we forgotten that Jesus Himself ate with publicans and sinners? That we are ALL sinners in need of His grace? We can talk about love, but if we do not SHOW it, then we are only making noise. We as Christians seem to forget that "A church is a hospital for sinners; not a museum for saints!"

@@theorcamafia There could be some religion I don't know about, but the chances are, yes. Yes they do.
We do see in religion, that these topics always come back.
      1. Shaming people for not following the rules of the religion, even if they aren't the rules of law.
      2. Fear used as a tool. Mostly in combination with death. This plaque happend because we didn't pray hard enough. This flood happened because we made (the) GOD(S) angry. The only way to get a good afterlife is by following our religion.
      3. And indoctrination. What happens if both parents follow the same religion? The kid gets indoctrinated in it. They have to join in Ramadan or they have to go to sunday school etc. What do religious, "public" schools do? Indoctrinate the kids. Tell them the earth is 2000 years old, Dinossaurs weren't a thing etc.
We see these traits in past religions like the Maya religions. The big modern ones, like Christianity & Islam. But also in smaller tribes that still exist. Like in the native american ones or african ones.

Nowadays, SO MANY people judge and reject Christianity as the result of hypocrisy in the church. Those who claim to be "Christian" and who also judge others apparently forget that Jesus took his place on the cross for EVERYONE. We are ALL sinners, and just because somebody sins differently than you, that doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make you "better" than them. We ALL need forgiveness and a TRUE relationship with Jesus. With all of that being said, I applaud this scene. What did these self-proclaimed "followers" expect of Mary? To place herself between Georgie and Mandy on the bed? We ALL have free will.

Luke 23:26-43 ~ 26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30 Then
“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’
31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals-one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

My Mum, who is very religious and god fearing, got treated similarly to this when people found out my brother and I have different fathers. We always knew obviously but the church didn’t because we didn’t see it as their business, but when my brother who travels a lot came over for the holidays and people saw how different we look (I’m black, he’s white), it was very obvious. It doesn’t make a difference to us though, my brother and I have never referred to each other as half siblings because of how closely we were raised. But sadly it mattered a lot to the Church and they treated my mother terribly for it.
My brother and I aren’t very religious but we did try our best to get our mother welcomed back into the church, sadly to no avail. She continued getting dirty looks, whispering about her behind her back and lost a lot of church friends. She moved to another church which fortunately welcomed her warmly and didn’t care that her children didn’t have the same fathers.
*EDIT:* We did tell people how it happened and that it wasn’t an affair. My mother was married to my brother’s father and had my brother. Her ex husband was very abusive and so my mother divorced him and moved to another city with my brother where she met my father and had me and my twin sister. But the fact my mother had been divorced (brother’s father) and had two children with a man she never married (my father) made them look down on her even more. They didn’t care about the abuse she had endured by her ex husband, they just thought she was disgusting for divorcing him.

There is tendency to hypocrisy in humans, period**, which is why that issue keeps coming up.
One of the main things we see Christ doing in the Gospel is calling out the hypocrisy, particularly, of people who are affluent, powerful and prestigious, especially among the "pious."
He's not tearing down religion by any means... he's not a wrecking crew,
      but a doctor.
He wants them to change, and do what they've actually been told to do.
The problem there, and here, isn't the religion.
The religious teaching they're quoting tells them *exactly* how they should be behaving.
The problem is the people's failure to carry through when it gets uncomfortable or inconvenient or scary.
** The same man who wrong "that all men are created equal and endowed by their maker with certain inalienable rights" owned a massive number of slaves, and helped preserve slavery.
It felt too difficult a sacrifice for him to avoid. becoming a hypocrite.
Some of the celebrities who promote climate awareness live in huge, air conditioned mansions and fly around on private jets.
They care...but change is inconvenient and uncomfortable.
For hundreds of years, scientists looked at clear evidence-- first, the evidence of their eyes and their life experiences, and later, well conducted research....
Clear evidence that a previously held "truth" of science was wrong: the "fact"
that "non human animals don't have emotions/are incapable of 'suffering' "
It seemed to not be true. Anyone who has interacted with a mammal for any length of time can see that they have cognition and emotions, even if those are not identical to ours.
But instead of acknowledging the truth
(Which among other things would have made vivisection ethically problematic)
they turned it into an aggressively defended blind spot, and for decades, they ruined the careers of colleagues who challenged it.
Religion has no premium in hypocrisy.

Well I was told that I needed to tell him this and be quick about it. It broke my heart and upset me because I cared deeply for him and he was wanting to start a fresh with his spiritual life. From that point on it upset me to hear them preach about welcoming other in and loving everyone no matter their background. I quite going to that church and found a better one that was more welcoming and showed others love. I hate that people experience things like this because christ taught love not hate.
