    When I was a 11, my father took me to his work one day. This was back in the early days of computers. His work computer had a football game. It was basically you choose a play and the computer ran a simulation and decided if your play worked (think Oregon Trail). No one had ever beaten the game. They let me play it, "to give me something to do" during the lunch break.
    The computer was beating me 9 - 7 in the 3rd quarter when I had 4th and 19 from my own 18 yard line. I called a Hail Mary. When the computer finished it's simulation, it said touchdown, 82 yards. I took the lead and never gave it up. Winning 20 - 16.
    All of his co-workers were stunned. My dad was super proud that day. I remember he kept telling them over and over. "I told you he could beat it."

    • @rileygiordano2380
      @rileygiordano2380 2 месяца назад +6

      Just means his math was based on false assumptions. They've only gone for it on 4th down twice, both presumably short yardage situations. You can't then declare definitively you'd convert 50% of the time when the distance is variable. Young Sheldon's math was wrong.

    • @user-jw4py2ul1i
      @user-jw4py2ul1i Месяц назад +20

      Sheldon’s calculations might be more accurate if the team ALWAYS goes for it on fourth down. During the course of the game the statistical probability works out in your favor. But choosing just the one time in the game would not allow the percentages to give you the desired advantage.

    • @litodat233
      @litodat233 20 дней назад

      @@rileygiordano2380no it wasn’t cuz okay they didn’t get it and lets just say they turned the ball over okay when they get back on offense if they get in a 4th down situation again and go for it and get it that means Sheldon’s 50% is still right meaning if u don’t get it the first time you’ll get it the second time you go for it doesn’t have to be back to back

    • @Dc-kk9bd
      @Dc-kk9bd 16 дней назад +1

      They make it 50% of the time because people r more likely to go for it on 4th and 1 than 4th and 50. That's does not mean you should never punt

He confidently recalled something that Sheldon had done before and he stood firm. Sure if you take a more nuanced look 4th and more than 5 from your twelve is the wrong choice. However are we really taking a nuanced look at this? Do we think this near end of the game scenario was the first time they punted in the game or what made him click over to following his son?
      Also let me try a scenario, you have the ball on your own 12 yard line, it is the fourth quarter and ever play this game you have gained exactly 7 yards. This drive has started on the 8, first down gain seven to the 15; second down false start to the 10, run to the 17; third down holding half distance to the 9, false start to the 5, gain 7 to the 12. It is 4th and 6. Do you think you should punt Or take take the 7 almost certain 7 yards?

    Back then the bank would charge a fee for them. As he owned several properties this would get expensive.
    Then he told the church pastor about it and I started making them for others. I don't think I'd ever been proud of anything before. My mom's hypercritical and being on welfare we had moved so often I was always in trouble at school. (I attended 13 different public schools in total)

    So many variables that Sheldon doesn't take into consideration. For example, he says that you are successful 50% of the time that you go for it on 4th down. But doesn't consider that pretty much every time that they went for it on 4th down, it was 4th and less than 3 yards. Going for it on let's say 4th and 12 every time would make that 50% drop tremendously.

    • @AverageLeagueHack
      @AverageLeagueHack 3 года назад +4

      You're not wrong but if you knew you were going on 4th, your playbook is open on 3rd and 12 to run a screen, draw or short pass that the defense typically concedes and now it's 4th and 3.

    • @alexhussinger3550
      @alexhussinger3550 3 года назад +1

      Yeah, the calculation is a little too simplistic as Sheldon has presented it. Stuff like relative offensive and defensive strength (going for it vs a team with a good offense and poor defense is better than vs a team with a poor offense and good defense), yardage to 1st down, score conversion % for both teams from expected field position in both situations, the score and time left etc. Still worth looking into though if the aggregate numbers are that good.

    • @TheMacC117
      @TheMacC117 3 года назад +1

      And since they added a Too Many Men penalty and still hadn't converted, they were at least 4th and 6 when how dad first said go for it.

    • @user-bv6kb9or7k

      It's statistics, meaning that he got information from previous games (or has studied winning probability of football) and concludes that 50% of the teams that go for the fourth will score, and it is shown statistically that 48% of the cases that go for the fourth down score
      Statistics doesn't take variables into account, every team going on the fourth down that loses or wins will be collected and analyzed into chances
      So when Sheldon says 50%, he means that, let's say, previous 100 teams out of 200 that have gone for fourth down score regardless of which yard teams are on, of course he doesn't take variables into account, it is how it is

    The face George makes at 2:39 is when he realizes Sheldon's theory is right, and he has full confidence in it before the play even happens. Which is why he chimes in "did I ever tell you about my tax refund?" alluding to another situation when he seriously doubted Sheldon but was wrong. George's way of saying "I trust my son."
    I love this scene because it captures a truth of life, if the logic behind what you're doing is complicated most people will write you off as a fool before they try to understand it. So as the great Stan Lee said, "if you know in your heart that it's a good idea, never let anyone tell you otherwise."

Also, too many men on the field is a five yard penalty, you don't just play the down again. I do appreciate that the game they were watching involved Texas Tech, since Mike Leach was a big fan of going for it on fourth down.

    The game where Roger threw the HAIL MARY pass to Drew Pearson? We were at a wedding for a cousin (held at Dallas First Baptist Church when Dr Kriswell was still pastor)..my mom had a transistor radio and ear phone up her sleeve listening to the football game during wedding. The groom, best man and other male guests kept coming up to mom asking about the score etc (Dallas was losing). Then during the reception my mom yelled out..."WE WON"! The whole place went nuts! The bride was not happy!

    • @Billionaireben

      That's because they banned wedge formations. That's the limit of my football knowledge, that wedge formations are tremendous physical force that can be devastating to the other team. Don't ask me any other football questions, I learned that from a guy who made national news breaking up 'pro Viet Cong' rallies in the late 60s.

    • @Elthenar
      @Elthenar 3 года назад

      The power of the brain has always been a dominant force in football. One of the better examples is from the Patriots-Rams superbowl. The Rams had an awesome offense that no one could stop, until they ran into Bill Belichicks defense in the Super Bowl. Belichick drew up a perfect defense that stonewalled the Rams. Even better, everyone the Rams played the next year copied that defense and the Rams offense sputtered all year.
