I Myself Hate The Common Misconception of adult animation It's not just Seth MacFarlane and Trey Parker and Matt Stone the genre can be Nuanced look at Primal or Bojack Horseman
What I don't like is how all of the controversy over this show was about it satirizing the Catholic Church, which is an institution that *should* be satirized and mocked, and not that it was an unfunny horrible show.
As a former Catholic, I find that the best satires about the church are the ones that come from a place of authenticity or self-critique. Works like "Red Hot Catholic Love", Dogma (Which I'm half and half on), and Father Ted, come from people who grew up with the religion and want to express how the institution can change. Popetown on the other hand, comes from folks who have no clue on how to take the piss out of the traditions or culture of the religion, thinking that having the Pope get into whacky situations or using "adult humour" as a crutch constitutes a show.
Yeah. As I pointed out in the video at 0:24, I am a Catholic. I can see why the series would offend a good chunk of Catholic people. According to tradition, the hierarchy of the Pope stems from the apostle St. Peter. But like Trevor said, if you take away the Catholic themes - it's just MID at best. While watching the episodes to prepare for this edit, it was hard for me to get through the series - it was THAT boring. It was mainly typical, cliche "adult" animated cliches such as sex, violence, and gross-out. At most, I chucked at a few parts, such as the Pope thinking that the dictator's wife was an alien, or the part where the Pope shoots the inflated horse with his toy gun. I'm glad you brought up Father Ted. That is a great series, especially since there is A LOT of Catholic and Irish humor throughout its short 25-episode run. There is a really good video by Hats of Entertainment that talks about what made the series great.
i dont meant to be that one person, but did people actually hate snuff box? i thought it was pretty good and the clips on youtube get a lot of love. it might seem like it "faded away" because of how short it was, but that length is typical for british shows. if people really didn't enjoy it... well, more Matt Berry for me ahaha
From what I gather, it was rather polarizing. You either loved it or hated it. Those who loved it really loved it, and those who didn’t really didn’t. It seems like it was liked enough to get a DVD, but not enough to last more than a year.
@@tyrannosaurusallen3703 a lot of british tv series never really do last long though, even if they are loved and received well. 6 episodes isn't the norm but it wasn't out of the ordinary for a show like that- look at the Peter Serafinowicz show, people loved it and BBC still only gave it 6 episodes. MM should make a vs. the network on that one...
i only saw some of episodes on popetwon in the internet and it´s awfull. It´s like they never undestand why eric cartman worked. Firts, he´s a child. second, he´s a sociopath that plans a lot of scams, while the pop did nothing and he was very annoying.
As an Atheist, I agree. Sure, I would laugh that they're mocking religion at first (Got me to click on this, tbh), but if they're going to make the same jokes/gags over and over. What's even the point of the show then? South Park didn't start as like they're now, they started with a dumb idea of "Who would win, Jesus or Santa?", then an alien story, and then grew into the social commentary juggernaut we have today. That these clone adult shows is trying to jump in without understanding why South Park naturally grown writing is successful, and just take the surface level of "Ugly + Offensive + Obnoxious = Funny = Successful" and make a checklist what an episode "should" be.
I like some of the character designs in this show! (The 3d backgrounds are kind of dated!) The voice actors are okay except for the pope! And that’s all I have to say about the show itself MID! Code lyoko GOATED!
Looks like the best thing about Popetown is the credits, and no, I'm not just making the obvious joke. It's actually really cool that they used production materials like model sheets and pencil tests for the visuals.
Ever since you've covered this show years ago, I've been intrigued with it. I've only seen a few episodes online and I honestly think it's a bad show, but it's the kind of bad that sort of sticks with me. Perhaps it's the whole idea of this show being controversial for mostly surface level reasons and it's weird yet charming premise and artstyle. It could have been atleast a decent show if the people working on it weren't trying so hard to make it be offensive for mostly no reason.
"Do you think a show revolved around making fun of the Catholic Church was going to be recieved warmly?" Kinda, yes. We had Father Ted and Vicar of Dibley that are both still beloved to this day. So it was understandably a surprise, in the UK at least, that after those two shows a new one would be any kore controversial.
I got this footage form the Internet Archives upload of PopeTown. They included the interviews from on the original DVD. Although it has been removed due to copyright, I was able to download the footage on time for the review.
@mediamementosofficial how completely rude do you have to be? Also, I didn't even like my own comment. If you were doing videos shaming other religious groups you'd get a lot of complaints too. And besides, I have better things to do with my day anyways.
Yeah. I did that because I originally labeled Chowder incorrectly because I thought there were six videos Vs the Network 2023 Part One. I didn’t realize that the error was Chowder exclusive.
Huh, I guess this kinda shows how different Catholic christians are compared to the more usual Christians you see here in the US(you know, the ones behind VeggieTales, Dungeons & Dragons & Little Dogs of the Prairie)
It's such a shame, because you can criticize religious institutions and still be funny and tasteful about it, Father Ted and Monty Python's Life of Brian do a really good job at poking fun at religion without being needlessly offensive.
Gotta love Catholics. Get all up in a tizzy over some cheap cartoon, but conveniently like to ignore that whole thing their priests do to those boys...

Honestly that would be hilarious if a show was so unfunny that people actively started to protest it
The sad part is that the concept has potential just needs to be developed better
This reminds me of the situation with ABC and the show “Work It”. But they offended the LGBT community instead of the catholic community.

I never seen PopeTown before, but now I’m a little wiser with the show’s concept and motivation for the series, as well as hit-and-miss comedy.
I like how you used footage from pixar's sparkshort, purl
It was my idea to include it. It's a great workplace comedy with lots of stereotypical office bros - and a yarn that doesn't quite fit in at first.
