Eltingville probably belonged on MTV. It would slot in perfectly with Downtown or Daria, and the network had a history with indie comic adaptations. Although, that era was ending in the early 00s.
the main issue with how adult swim works is probably because they don't look enough into what they greenlit, they'll let something happen without thinking twice of it, which has its advantage but is very flawed cuz when they start to look into it more, its usually too late
The thing that really hurt with Metalocalypse’s initial cancellation wasn’t just the Fax Machine debacle, but was moreso the network’s full blown dismissal of the MetalocalypseNow campaign. The massive social media campaign and fundraiser was backed by fans, industry people, and some of metal music’s most prolific musicians (the members of Metallica to name a few). Supposedly the campaign amassed a few million dollars, and was pitched to the network to show how badly the fan base wanted a proper conclusion to the show, only for Adult Swim to reject it at the time (2016-2017). Anywho, glad we got an ending in the end, and I was pretty satisfied with it through and through.
About the Learning with Pibby teaser, while it’s scummy that Adult Swim got people’s hopes up for nothing, I genuinely am happy this show didn’t happen. It would have been a legal nightmare, and while I liked the Pilot as a dumb, one off short for April Fool’s Day, I doubt it would’ve been all that good or impressive. And the reactions people have had around this thing in general are just downright hilarious in how stupid and childish they are.
Pibby has gotten the best possible second life as a springboard for crossover fanfiction. It's better off as a toy for the writing community to toss around than a full fledged TV show.
The main issue I have with Pibby is that the ONLY thing it's got going for itself is just the fact that a bunch of characters from other CN shows would be there in that scary form and they'd just be like "haha my favorite character is now scary."
Thanks for the shoutout to the Icelandic Ultrablue video! This video turned out great too (I didn't even know a lot of this information) so great job! 👏
My dream is to end up working at Adult Swim and developing my own show. However, like most TV networks tend to do, I fear that it will either get cut short if it's not that popular, or if it ends up becoming a massive deal like say Rick & Morty, it will keep running on without me being able to do anything about it.
i don't normally comment but OMG you're one of my favorite youtubers, and the fact you've talked about 3 of my fave cartoons, south park, the critic, and finally venture bros, makes me super happy!!!!!!!!! thanks and God bless
Here’s the thing about some of these: Back in 2001 when Welcome to Eltingville first premiered they were only offering relatively cheaply made shows under 22 minutes. It was way way too expensive to produce for the fledgling block for the time. The same definitely applies to Korgoth of Barbaria years later. I can’t confirm or deny it, but I’d have to say this is why Venture Bros was cancelled. It was just too expensive to keep making, especially since seasons could have a gap of anywhere between 2 to 3 years inbetween. And they just couldn’t deal with that sort of production schedule anymore. Especially given Rick and Morty was dealing out the same thing, and given what we know about WHY production took so long for that show? It’s likely Adult Swim didn’t want to take anymore risks on Venture Bros for that reason.
Thanks for tuning in to Vs the Network 2023! With one exception in January, the series will return in May! Get hyped! Second channel: ruclips.net/channel/UCPy9KriXlBHxZyYtlki5rVgvideos?view=0
I've found out about Eltingville just a few days and I really enjoyed the piolet, too bad Adult Swim never picked this one up. I know its based on a comic and I know said comic become more dark as it went one so my guess is Adult Swim was a little hesitant about it so dropped it, I'm sure if it came out today Adult Swim would have actually picked this show up
It's a FUCKING shame no one knows why Eltingville never got picked up. It's one of my favorite cartoon pilots. Also, I feel like Adult Swim advertised Pibby to attract investors and advertisers, like Nick (that, and I assume John K gave them trust issues).
Adult Swim, if you happen to be reading this, congrats on what is essentially a "not as much of a jerk as you could have been" award. Also I'm surprised Final Space wasn't brought up here (though to be fair, it didn't start on AS). Must be saving it for a later VtN.
Same! The clip I chose for the Family Guy reruns came from Season 4 Episode 1, where Peter Griffin lists off a series of canceled shows by Fox - including Firefly, The Tick, and That ‘80s Show.
Adult swim feels like a bipolar Uber rich kid who keeps getting exotic pets on a whim, he loves them at first, but then they either get bored with them or they bite or scratch him , then he decides he doesn’t want it anymore and just abandons it in favor of the next exotic pet that catches his eye
Wow I can't believe he actually talked about stroker and hoop! I brought that one up in the comments just because I liked it, I'm So glad he mentioned it.
Kinda hard when Warner Bros. keeps removing their own content from HBO Max. They almost removed all the classic Looney Tunes and almost cancelled Coyote v. Acme. But strong backlash prevented THAT from happening.
Adult Swim is basically an extension of Cartoon Network if you will. The night time block to me more specific. That’s the best way to look at it I think.
There is another Adult Swim I would like to talk about and that’s Minoriteam which is about a team of super heroes which based on a racial stereotype and fight villains based on discriminatory concepts. The art style is inspired by early comic book super heroes like Jack Kirby. This may sound like one of those fake cartoons you can find in GTA V but this show was real and aired on AS in 2005. Apparently the higher ups for Adult Swim really liked the idea of a team of super heroes each based on a racial stereotype and ordered 20 episodes to be made now at days due to political correctness Adult Swim have been trying to distance themselves from the show much as possible and even removed all traces of it in there official website. Can’t say I blame Adult Swim wanting to disassociate themselves from this show and I thought this was an interesting story to tell
13:04 You left out a ton of context for Adult Swim’s Metalocalypse fax troll. When they did it in 2016 series creator/composer/star Brendon Small was in the middle of desperately finding some way to wrap the series up both for himself and the fans. The fax thing wasn’t done as a simple troll, it was Adult Swim deliberately giving Small and the show’s crew the middle finger. They were saying “You might have created it, but we own it so screw you.” Small wasn’t even legally allowed to tour or record as Dethklok just because Adult Swim refused to let him do anything with the property. Eventually after five years of bad blood and fans putting Adult Swim on blast, in 2021 they finally greenlit… a direct-to-video movie. Not a final season, not the “big mini series” Small had pitched in 2015, but an 83-minute movie Adult Swim dumped straight on to streaming and home video with minimal fanfare. It was a similar story with Venture Bros return to the screen, soyeah, you could look at Adult Swim as “good” because “they always do right by shows and producers in the end.” But the reality is it takes literal years of pressure from these shows’ fans and creators to budge Adult Swim towards eventually sort of doing right.
What's interesting is I watched a video recently covering the Eltingville comics and while the pilot is pretty much a one to one recreation of the comic the series was more one shots and shorts included in other books. It usually makes a solid point about the fandom it's critiquing but then in the last special it takes a very sharp and dark turn that might not be quite as drastic as Moral Orel is still interesting. Also have to say Moral Orel is a treasure and I've been a fan for years, with some very strong emotions tied to what was happening in my life as Adult Swim burned through that last season in like a week.
A couple of these have slightly more explanation, not much granted but a bit. Eltingville was too expensive to make into a full series which is a super common reason from them. Venture Bros is an interesting story though. The big reason behind Adult Swim's support for Venture Bros was because Mike Lazo absolutely loved the show. He was a huge supporter for it and gave the team levels of support that most creators could only dream of, which resulted in one of the best TV shows ever made imo. When Lazo stepped down however the new executives wasted no time shutting it down. The finale movie only happened because of the passionate fan base, but yeah corporate politics killed the Venture Bros
It's time for VS The Network 2023! WOOOOOOOO! I didn't know that even Adult Swim can do such things. At least they did their best unlike Nick. Can't wait for Vs The Network 2024!
If Adult Swim had ever listened to the Mr. Show DVD commentaries, they would’ve known telling Dino Stamatopoulos to make Moral Orel “darker” was a terrible idea. Dude’s got a deeply twisted sense of humor.
I’ve seen claims Stroker and Hoop (a show I remember liking) was expensive because of the name cast, but the “names” were people like Jon Glaser, Speed Levitch and Curtis Armstrong who are only big names to comedy nerds and character actor fans like me. And considering Glaser went on to create and star in two more Adult Swim shows (Delocated and Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter), something tells me he wasn’t asking for huge paydays.
Ah yes. Adult Swim. They’ve got great shows and they have shows that stink. Unfortunately, many of the great shows that are produced for the network would be cancelled before the show would have a proper conclusion.
Still bummed that Venture Bros ended. Got an order of the triad tat in commemoration. Glad it lingered as long as it did. Such is the life of fans of niche genre crap.
Even tho Tuca & Bertie got canned at season 3, the fact Adult Swim bought and gave us two more seasons after netflix axed it after one season says everything to me about the network.
And here I thought Nickelodeon was the worst network that shows got screwed over by. I think this is even worse. And that’s saying something given that I don’t even watch adult animation on that much.
AdultSwim execs liked Eltingville, Korgoth, and Pibby. Cartoon Network and Turner just dicided that they weren't going to allocate proper budgets for these. I think AdultSwim's management is one the best out there, they're quite respectful of their audiences and they encourage creative freedom (the Morel Orel debacle being the one exception). Stuff like Metapocalypse and Venture Bros couldn't gave been greenlit anywhere else in the first place, so I wouldn't say that AdultSwim treated them "unfairly." Both shows had fairly long runs even though they were not profitable for AdultSwim. They are not a financially independent network so I think it's unfair to compare them to behemoths like Warner.
Cartoon Network and AdultSwim were made into two separate networks for a reason. You cannot mix both and Pibby broke that "rule" even though AS execs clearly enjoyed the idea.
So I first saw Cheyenne Cinnamon during puberty I’m not going anywhere gross it’s just that I have a thing for blondes and I think this helped fuel it 😅
Idk man, reading how they have been treating Andy Merrill and jerking him around makes me think that they've started to listen to the devil on their shoulder.
I have an opinion. The main reason shows like moral orel or the venture bros were canceled is because these shows were not made for longevity. Many shows couldn't be on their channel due to how they weren't right on that channel. This is the reason why the problem solverz was sent to cartoon network
I'll tell ya' what happened to 'Eltingville'; someone in the higher-ups saw that it was utter trash and made a very compelling argument to his fellows as to why, so they axed it
If Adult Swim weren't like this, all the mess they did would have not happened and they would have more great shows still airing on the channel.
Eltingville probably belonged on MTV. It would slot in perfectly with Downtown or Daria, and the network had a history with indie comic adaptations.
Although, that era was ending in the early 00s.
My guess is that's the reason Adult Swim passed on the show. It just didn't fit into their brand of content.
