@@friendlyypyp1997 - Gives me flashbacks to 4Kids One Piece on Toonami You know, the show that's infamous for a character being censored because he smokes in every frame he's in, and that's not an exaggeration.
It's more of a money issue these days unfortunately. Pretty sure Adult Swim gets some money from Anti-Vape PSA companies (hence why they also get PSAs on their channel) and they don't want to look bad because of it. This issue was prevalent but just in a different way back then.
I don't know if this ever could have worked, but it seems like a lot of their problems came from a lack of experience and ability to convey what they wanted more clearly and cleverly.
Imo I think they were chained by getting the comic motion aesthetic right moreso over formulating their writing. Even for 10 min episodes they really stretch out the plots and by the 2nd half of the show they seem to have no ideas left. I personally don't reckon its a bad show but similar (and ironically paradoxical?) to Superjail its style over substance
I mean, it was made by three white cisdudes in the early 2000s. Many of their limitations towards a project like this were built-in. Though considering they came off of something like Crank Yankers, which sported a helmet-wearing, neurodivergent character named "Special Ed," I'm not sure just how much they were really willing to learn regardless.
To me when this show came out, it was just insanely low budget and ugly looking. Someone like sealab is equally low budget but was much cleaner and easier to follow what was going on.

Yeah the content here didn't light the world on fire, but the visuals are pretty ambitious. Even with weak animation they did a great job emulating Kirby's style. Someone's gotta take another crack at adapting Jack Kirby visuals to animation; The last act of Spiderverse proved how amazing animated Kirby Krackle looks.
Not Jack Kirby specifically, but Kid Cosmic has a similar “old comics” type art style. The backgrounds in this vid really reminded me of the space backgrounds in the show
This fucking show.. So dumb but loved watching it. But Black Dynamite did this kind of humor better and with a nice art style as well. Again The Jack Kirby artstyle was good but the writing was bad. Hey, Godzilla Mendoza, He has worked with Comic Tropes.
@RebelTaxi Todd James is the famous NY graffiti writer called REAS. You actually showed their production logo @ 6:20. he is also the reason why there is so much graffiti in the background of this show.
@@FrostTheRedeemed Dude why you blaming me for!? IT ain't my fault I almost went blinded by the backgrounds and had to pull out my shades to protect me from going blinded again.
I think the show is a pretty self-aware attempt at recuperating stereotypes and making a pretty great statement with the villains representing systemic issues afflicting ppl of color. Only issue is that they should’ve made the stereotypes a little more subtle. South Park does a great job with Token retroactively being named “Tolkien”-this is coming from a Black male. I haven’t seen the show but if the racial stereotypes are the jokes in the satire, the satire might just commit the same missteps they’re trying to critique.
Its so weird of all the things from that era of Adult Swim to age so well with some actual social commentary bite this and Moral Orel are the two I did not see coming.
I probably won't watch a single episode of this show outside of this video, but I'm glad it's not as horrible as I thought it would be. I'm shocked that the creators even put in satirical elements about systemic injustice that they did. A show called "Minoriteam" should not be as socially conscious as it is, but here we are! Also, the Jack Kirby aesthetic is baller af. They truly nailed his art style!
"I'm shocked that the creators even put in satirical elements about systemic injustice that they did. A show called 'Minoriteam' should not be as socially conscious as it is, but here we are!" Congratulations, you just discovered satire!
Racist Checkers. That was also my introduction to the show as it didn't air in Australia until much later. I remember all those old flash games they had for their older shows. Shame that alot of those games are virtually lost to time and the obsolescence of Flash but that game from memory wasn't remarkable.
I would wait for every ep. of Minoriteam with anticipation. truly ahead of it's time and underrated. I am glad that pan reminded me of this funny show.
Idea: Reboot the minoriteam as a series of shorts, but they all have stereotypical American white-guy voices like David Cross, Patten Oswalt, Conan O'Brien, etc (Think "Sorry to Bother You"); instead of those dumb impressions because these stereotypes were created specifically to mock and further deride racial-minorities. Their job is to help "people-of-color" but make things worse.
I was think more of a cartoon set in a world where white, cisgender people are the minority while other people of color and people in the LGBT crowd are all racist towards them and heterosexuality is considered controversial.
This unironically aged like a fine wine based on what you've shown here, and rather forward-thinking behind the scenes. Could've been one of those shows that's a gutbuster but then you stop think and go "Oh shit..." and it kinda is already. Happy ya got Chocovania on this, you're damn good at spotlighting cool things
@@souljastation5463 Yes. And that matters because...? If Adult Swim pleased the whims of everyone they wouldn't have made fun of the crackhead mom accusing them of satanism over a silly bumper of children being used as instruments
So I'm a huge Jack Kirby nerd/collector and I just wanna say this art style is absolute heaven! Especially when most marvel properties both live action and animated tend to go for kinda boring visual styles. The actual acknowledgement to Kirby's art is why I think Thor Ragnarok is one of the best MCU movies. Anyway just wanted to say this show looks cool as fuck
Interestingly, Peter Girardi would then co-develop Saul Of The Molemen with Craig Lewis of Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends fame, a parody of Land Of The Lost-esque shows with some pretty cool puppet effects and costumes, which also got 20 episodes out of nowhere and is considered a VERY underrated series. Oh, and it's also notable for having Trey Parker sing the theme song. So yeah, the only time one of the South Park creators worked on an Adult Swim show.
I still get that random line “The stones… the stones… the stones, of SAAAUULLL!” stuck in my head from time-to-time. Plus the weird 1776 flashback episode with Dana Snyder as Benjamin Franklin was popular enough to get its own spin-off Fourth of July special “A Young Person’s Guide to History”.
Trey Parker also did a voice for “The Shivering Truth” created by their writer, Vernon Chatman who also created Wondershowzen and Xavier the Renegade Angel
5:56 yes fun fact Jack Kirby was a huge fan of collages. So in his issues if he wanted to depict space far out things you can't understand they'd be made out of ripped up magazines he'd have.
I honestly feel like you could do a really good version of this now with good enough writers. Though knowing Society it'll get taken up by the Wrong People.
Eh. They recreated the Kirby style in episodes of Superman: The Animated Series in the late 1990s. The Kirby crackle is ALL OVER the place in the New Gods episodes of that series. Also, Jack Kirby worked in the US animation industry in the late 1970s and 1980s. He storyboarded on the awful DePatie-Freleng Fantastic Four (1978) animated series and was the main visual concept artist on Thundarr the Barbarian which was created by Steve Gerber, creator of Howard the Duck! Thundarr IMHO is worth picking up on Blu ray.
I LOVE THAT SHOW! The fact that it's being hidden like an old shame is saddening. It's was in the vain of Undercover Brother, Boondocks, Unemployed Man, etc.
Ayyy Dana Snyder is cool af and full of adult swim stories. I too meet him at a crumy con basically the new jersey version of Florida called Pensacola. He did not like me telling him anytime he talks I see a shake talking to me feels pretty trippy but I ment it as a compliment.
For every "you can't show this on tv anymore!" there's stuff like "queer people existing" that's gradually escaping censor hell. People try to act like restrictions are only getting tighter, but it's more of a general shift in sensibilities. Also, I wonder how Jack Kirby would have responded to this show. Would he be on board with the 'it's satire' rationale, or ready to throw giant hands?
@@souljastation5463 modern tv’s been good for a while, very little censorship, unless race jokes are what you want. If you need old school stuff, the 80s and 90s were WAY more censored. Lol even 80s ninja turtles couldn’t show nunchucks
"but it's more of a general shift in sensibilities" and thus many things have become Verboten in a mere decade or two, and very artificially so. Shows only can tell the status quo approved message like some old-timey PSA for kids. People on TV are so disconnected from the average Joe now and they closer represent something from a propaganda poster and constantly preach like one. What was once normal to say only in say, 2008, is now regarded as unspeakable and as though it was from ancient times. Things have been forced from the bottom down to change at such break neck speeds that people are just in disbelief. Like a people who just got taken over by the Soviets, every aspect of their culture has changed. Yet on the surface it is still advertised as being "normal" as though there wasn't some massive paradigm shift, but people can still feel it. And the internet has been pushed by big tech for years now to become cable TV 2.0, the internet is far more restricted than it was only 15 years ago.
I love the art style. It reminds me a lot of the silver age comics of Marvel and DC,especially Jack Kirby. It does shows how much love these guys have of the old school comics.
I remember watching like the first four or five episodes on the AS website! Honestly I thought the show was hilarious in a good way. While I am from an ethnic background I was not offender but eyeah I can easily see why it got banned!
Between the over the top-ness, wanna be South Park style of edgy humor, the pop culture gags, and the specifically referenced show from the 60's and/or 70's, this is PEAK Gen-X produced adult cartoon series. And yeah, we can never have that again because today's cartoon makers are from the 80's-00's and referencing the stuff THEY grew up with. Plus, we have this weird ass thing now about character pieces and deeper meanings are more important than jokes Family Guy viciously beat to the ground and ruined, so we're getting stuff like Bojack Horseman and Smiling Friends, so...
Adam de la Pena gave me and my buddies so much entertainment when we were younger. We used sit up in my friends upstairs room in the barn to smoke and watch Code Monkeys all the time. That was such a good show. Don't forget hanging with Busey.
There was this 2002 rpg video game on the PC. That has this Jack kirby art style. Called Freedom Force and its 2005 sequel Freedom Force vs. The Third Reich. Tactical RPG game that's basically a love letter to all things silver Age superheroes, made by Irrational Games ( the same creators that went on to create BioShock years after these 2 games) the game series is very obscure but it still has a niche following of fans and modders who create content for these games. While I'm sure the gameplay is not going to be everyone's cup of tea I still feel like it could be great for an obscure games video.
Dude I knew this show wasn't a figment of my imagination. Use to watch this around 2 a.m while eating a late night snack, avoiding waking up my parents as a kid 😂
I remember seeing the show as a kid and I didn't watch it cuz I was kind of grossed out by it, but I'd probably dig it a bit more now cuz A) I have a better appreciation for this art style now and B) I have a better tolerance and understanding of this type of humor
I didn't pay much attention to Minoriteam when it aired. That time in my (and to a lesser extent my husband's) life was full of episiotomy scars and dirty diapers, plus a toddler who was shaping up to be fairly odd. Hearing about it now makes me want to go back and watch it for real.
Friggin' love the show! The Jack Kirby artstyle, the hilarious characters and jokes! I'd watch the episode religiously and seriously miss it!! We'll probably never get a full box set outside of a bootleg, but I'm willing to walk up that corporate ladder, and punch him in the face!
Using stereotypes for comedy is great... it helps bring then to light and mocks them so ppl will realize they are ridiculous and wont use them... comedy is great for that
I showed this series to a few friends and they actually pitched me a much better, funnier concept for Racist Frankenstein: having him built from parts of every race and STILL racist, even against himself.
I learned a while back that my brother-in-law avoided Minoriteam because he thought it was about nothing but making fun of minorities. He was surprised to learn that they were positioned as _the heroes._ Granted, like Pan said, the show wasn't that deep, but it wasn't just offensive for the sake of it like, say, Drawn Together. Also, Racist Frankenstein is still funny as hell to me. He's such a perfect distillation of the stupidity and stubbornness of racists.
I would love to see a show in this jack kirby artsyle that wasn't this show. I could totally see a new wholly original Superhero show in this style that really makes it big.

You know, the show that's infamous for a character being censored because he smokes in every frame he's in, and that's not an exaggeration.
It's more of a money issue these days unfortunately. Pretty sure Adult Swim gets some money from Anti-Vape PSA companies (hence why they also get PSAs on their channel) and they don't want to look bad because of it. This issue was prevalent but just in a different way back then.
16:03 - Oh my god, I love that instead of mentioning it to him and asking for him to re-record the line, you just called him out right in the video.
It was funnier this way
I don't know if this ever could have worked, but it seems like a lot of their problems came from a lack of experience and ability to convey what they wanted more clearly and cleverly.
yeah.
Key words is cleverly, everyone can point out issues with a mocking voice, not many can actually make it so funny you give a lesson across
I actually like how close it looks like Jack Kirby’s art

You know an Adult Swim show is on another level when the rating blurb of the DVD release (only exclusive in Australia, go figure) specifically points out 'racism themes' on the box. Never seen that anywhere else for a DVD here let alone for an animated series.

1. Literally, I was thinking about this show two days ago and I couldn't remember the name, so thank you for that;

shout-out to Diablos for phrasing his criticism of the show in the third-person, making it feel like he's talking down to you from a high throne softly swirling a glass of wine
It's unfortunate since everyone just wants to copy manga
Not Jack Kirby specifically, but Kid Cosmic has a similar “old comics” type art style. The backgrounds in this vid really reminded me of the space backgrounds in the show
There was a SILVER SURFER cartoon back in the day that did it in the Kirby style!!! Need more shows with his style!!!

I grew up without cable, so my only other introduction to the series was this flash game (maybe chess based) on AS's site that I tried for a while.

So it's just one side getting censored. Aight no issues then.
