  • Today we showcase Montenegro expat life with surprising monthly cost for a family of three from South Africa, living their dream on the waterfront of Kotor Bay located in the country of Montenegro on a budget. They discovered Montenegro watching House Hunters International in 2017, and the country did not disappoint them. We'll discuss their cost of living in Montenegro, experiences, as well as topics like International School, and medical care. There are great Real Estate opportunities in Kotor, Tivat, Perast, Budva, Lustica, Herceg Novi, and Dobrota, and with Montenegro's lower than average cost of living a potential landing spot for retirees on a typical US Social Security budget.

We bought our home in Kotor Montenegro in 2016, we were enchanted by this medieval city from first sight. With the low cost of living, Mediterranean climate, UNESCO Heritage designation, and it's popularity as a tourist destination for Eastern Europeans and the British it made perfect sense to buy here. As we travel Europe over the next 5 to 10 years we will be using our home in Montenegro as our home base, rest assured our journey is not ending.

Hi W & J. An absolutely eye opening and amazing vlog showing the options out in Europe for a very comfy living. Have a couple of questions.
    1. From what I heard, if i buy a property in Montenegro, I get an unlimited residency permit- Is that True. Is there a minimum limit on the price of the property?
    2. Being a US citizen, if i buy the property in MN, then i have the freedom to roam around the EU countries with out the 90/180 day rule, because I am a MN resident. Is my assumption true?. If not I have to use the MN residence after every 90 days in EU.
I would greatly appreciate if you or Ian can give a little more details on getting residency in MN. Thanks

There is not a minimum on the property purchase. It must be a habitable residence. Unfortunately, Montenegro is not part of the EU or the Schengen zone, therefore it does not help you with the 90 days in 180 days rule. It helps you to have a country outside of the Schengen zone so that you can leave the Schengen after your 90 days and spend 90 here and return back to the Schengen to restart the clock.
You can get residency here by home ownership or starting a corporation. If it is home ownership, you must spend 11 months a year here. If you start a corporation, those rules are more relaxed. We will have a residency video update in about 2 weeks from now.

We retuned for approximately one month in January 2021
We are able to have a better existence on less money outside the US.

As a American expat, the difference between the U.S. and MNE is like the difference between night and day. I mean that in a very good way! Good to see some S. Africans moved here. I have a very personal connection to their country that began in 1977.
