Another great interview Nate and thank you Richie! What this shows me today, different from when I was growing up, there are just millions of extremely talented and wonderfully musical drummers these days. Probably alot has to do with youtube and not having to go to a major university to learn. Today before my gig tonight I will enjoy watching Arch Echo! Thank you!

Hey Nate, I'm digging your groove. I really like your interviews, two heads on the subject is always illuminating, as well as your deep dives into really specific focus. I, too have had trouble keeping my kit out of storage, but have found that just doing stick drills, continuing to study and develop new things with intentional practice, playing along with recordings sitting tapping feet and slapping thighs with either hands or sticks is keeping me not only in shape, but making it so that the next band that accepts me enjoys the accuracy I've improved since the last band dismissed me, or I walked out having outgrown their limits. One salient lesson in my exit from last band is 'rehearsal is not practice'. Yes to that! If you care about music enough to be in a band I think it's just part of the deal to do your homework so the band doesn't have to deal with your lack of care for the craft, as me on drums with singers and song leaders without basics like meter and vocal cues, sense of how to lead the energy of a song from the voice lost when the singer goes for a low harmonic and cuts the energy when the song requires the uplift for the chorus, backing vocalists presuming to step into lead without training to do that for real, UGH! Voice maybe even more than drums takes care of the throat and proper warming up before stepping up to the mic, IMHO.

Yes! Someone who backs the practice pad! Thanks for introducing me to him Nate. You’re the single greatest factor in a lot of my new exposure to rippers. Big ups

thanks for the kind words, and to defend my "don't own a pad" fiefdom, I'm preeeetty sure Richie would say that pads are a good supplement to real drums when you're not in front of them, but in the theoretical world where you always had access to real drums and no neighbors, they're not strictly necessary 😅😅. But in the real world, people have neighbors and don't have 24/7 access to real drums, so pads are awesome to fill in the gaps.

You should make some videos that talk more about drumming and martial arts. I've dabbled with BJJ and have plans to get back into it, but 3 months of training really showed my physical weaknesses and exacerbated some drum-related injuries that were brewing. I've since been committed to rehabbing my injuries through physio and building up my resilience so I can train BJJ again without sacrificing drumming. I know you aren't a fitness expert, but it'd be cool to hear if you've experienced something similar or at least hear about your BJJ journey as it relates to drumming and how those two fit in to your life in general. I keep hearing more and more drummers talk about BJJ in passing, and I'm dying for a good drum/BJJ mash up.
