- 'To Kill a Mockingbird' was never on Jeff Daniels' school curriculum. Now he's playing Atticus Finch in Aaron Sorkin's Broadway adaptation.

I never would have thought to cast Daniels as my beloved Atticus Finch & yet the moment Stephen said it, my brain went, "Perfect! I can totally see that now!" Break a leg, Mr. Daniels!
those two could spent two hours talking and I'd be entertained for every second of it.
Jeff has such a great charisma and genuinely makes Stephen laugh.
"but do you write a new play every night?"
Brilliant Comeback by Colbert - "Do you write a new play everynight ?"
Jeff Daniels was on 'Newsroom' - worth watching the part in the pilot with the segment about 'America the greatest country in the world' - relevant to todays USA.
So true. The WHOLE series, not just the intro, is more relevant today than when it ended just 4 years ago. Hard to believe.... just.... 4 years. The series was a tad ahead of it's time.

D W the series that made me pay attention to Jeff Daniels!
@@girasolegiallo6927 totally agree. Always associated him with Dumb and dumber and those kind of films I just can't watch but newsroom showed Daniels for being a damn good actor to me
I will say this - this year Colbert has become an go to interviewer. He lays back big time and his guests does it too in response. It just feels like you see actual friends talking in party in some corner.
Pēteris Krišjānis Reminds me of Craig Ferguson. But with less gay skeleton robots. Oh well we can’t get everything we want
@@JavierPerez-cx4jw I was about to reply the same thing. Craig just didn't care, in a good way, and that allowed the guests to just relax and speak among friends. Still watch re-runs on RUclips of CraigyFerg all the time.
Unless he gets someone who triggers his "spanish inquisition" mode, then he's intolerable. Dont get me wrong, I love Colbert, that's why I'm here.
He's great if he's genuinely interested in/likes the guest. But you can really tell when he doesn't give a shit.
Yeah. It's interesting because for the first year or two he was really, really rough in the interview. Kind of surprising because he did a similar interview on his old show most nights too; I guess being in character made it too different. But he finally seems to have found his rhythm.
The Newsroom is the best TV show I ever watched, I'm so happy Aaron Sorkin and Jeff Daniels are back together!
Jeff even played a Republican on that amazing show. I've watched every episode 3 times. Kind of like Morning Joe today.
I totally agree!
Thoroughly enjoyed it, so addictive!
Jeff Daniels is one of those actors that seems to move effortlessly between drama and comedy without being typecast. I don't know how he does it, but he makes it look easy.
absolutely loved the cheers from audience when he mentioned "the newsroom".
Thank you for helping me thru this presidency with a few laughs everyday. Without you and Seth Meyers I really do not think I could get thru it!
Nancy Paquet
We're all together in this nightmare, that's the only way we can stand in this maelstrom, leaning on each other. Have a good day!
I know this is for TKAM, but man how come I’m getting “Stephen has Will McAvoy as tonight’s guest.”
What a great interview! Truly enjoy it when Stephen lets the guest take their time to tell their story.
A Sorkin's To Kill a Mockingbird???? Wow! I would love to see that!! Congrats! Jeff your awesome!!
"Do you write a new play every night?"
> cue Late Show Theme Music (PERFECT, JON, by the way ♥).
Brilliant.
Blak I just minimized the video to come comment thisss same thing. Kudos to you for beating me. Just know I agree! Genius.
Jeff Daniels was also Lt. Col. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain in Gettysburg/Gods and Generals
He was also George Washington in The Crossing......
I love how Daddy Colbert leaned back in his chair and was like now you listen here son I do 202 shows a year and we wright new stuff each night so you better come down young man. 😂
I love him so much!
BOOM! "Do you write a new play every night?"
Dang Colbert! Not holding anything back! LOL!!!
There are very few modern actors that I'd trust with a role as monumental as Atticus Finch. Jeff Daniels is one of them.
I really appreciate the way this interview went into the craft and context of Jeff's roles past and present. Nice work.
Jeff Daniels for P R E S I D E N T
I've got a little tear in my eye from laughing so much.
I see a lot of "Harry" in Jeff, in this interview. I love it!
Corduroy shirt... Haven't seen one of those in about 30 years...Nice
It`s the cashmere for men. Keeps you cool and warm at the same time.
Shop at Eddie Bower
I thought it was velvet, then I zoomed in, yep I could see the wale.
(Corduroy is a ridged form of velvet.)
New Message - Corduroy hides a multitude of sins, apart from corduroy. 🤔
@@steh8831 ......
and the fact that you chose to wear it.
Jeff Daniels in his Corduroy Shirt and I'm suddenly all FanGirl... Yes! and"Then one morning a little Girl stopped and looked straight into Corduroy's bright eyes. "Oh, Mommy!" she said. "Look! There's the very Bear I've always wanted."
Interesting Trivia: the actor "Jerome," whom Daniels mentions, is Jerome Collamore whose debut on Broadway was in a 1918 production of Hamlet. Collamore went on to appear in 13 more Broadway productions, 12 movies/TV shows, and apparently a number of Off-Broadway productions. His last appearance was in a 1987 film titled Five Corners. Collamore died that year (at the age of 95) before the film was released. What a trouper!
Jeff said "Simon and Schuster", I'm sure he MEANT "Wayne and Shuster" , the Canadian sketch comedy team that was in that same theater when it was HQ to the Ed Sullivan Show so many times it seemed like they had something on Ed.
Thanks for the clarification on that because it puzzled me. I'm a bibliophile but including a major publishing company in that list was incongruous.
Simon and Schuster office is also near the theater?
Jeff has no idea what typecasting is. He has so much range! Movies, TV, Stage... Comedy, Drama, Thrillers, Period pieces.... etc. I just love Jeff Daniels in everything I've seen him in.
Brillant human being and a great actor ✌😊
I have his CD from his performance in his hometown in MI...he wrote the songs, performs them in front of family in friends. Great CD.
So glad he mentioned Newsroom
i can spend my whole life watching this two guy talking to each other. Amazing just amazing.
Why can I only ever remember either Jeff Bridges or Jeff Daniels' name, but not both at the same time? It's as though the act of remembering one blocks the other. Somewhat irritating and alarming, both
You seem to have managed OK while writing the first sentence of your comment. How did you do it?
they're both freaking awesome dudes (technically jeff bridges is the dude) and amazing actors, would love to see them in a movie together
Because they are actually the same person and when they occupy the same thought, The Matrix calls both the Jeff Daniels and Jeff Bridges resources which causes a read error.
@@SherryEReson I actually had to Google it! 😯
I now choose to believe they're the same person, thanks!
what a great talk show guest, what a great actor... first time i'm really envious of people able to go see a broadway show...
He is the best. Purple Rose of Cairo.
What a fabulous role for Jeff Daniels!
Jeff Daniels playing Robert Mueller...... Think about it.
His hair isn't grey and a wig ehhh I think not.
I think he could play Trumptard and do a great job of it.
He's playing a publisher in a new movie from what I heard.
Sam Waterston should play Mueller.
The irony that he played James Comey instead ;)
Great interview , Jeff just spilled it perfectly
Something Wild starring Daniels, Melanie Griffith, and Ray Liotta is one of the most underrated films from the 80s.
That's an awesome flick.
Jeff Daniels is a trip, come telling the audience to sit they a** down!
Jeff Daniels looks like the kind of Dad you wouldn't want to disappoint. If he looked at me with a blank face I'd die inside a bit.
There are certain male guests that are always entertaining. Nathan Lane, Hugh Laurie, Eddie Redmayne, Tom Hanks, Stephen Fry and Jeff Daniels.
Linen Gray
George Clooney.
I didn't expect "dumber" to grow into this great guy. Everytime I see him I'm just stunned at his depth of mind.
wow , if you read this, wish you a lovely day
You made my day!
Thanks!
This's great!! Thanks for this. I hope you have a lovely day yourself!!
wow, that's new. There are nice people on RUclips!:)
Right back at you!
thanks a lot dear!!
Daniels is an awesome performer.
I assume not having read "To Kill a Mockingbird" in school while growing up in the U.S. is similar to not having read "Faust" when growing up in Germany.
Because that's me. Never read it, never seen the play.
Gracious, that's tragic to me. Harper "Nell" Lee was an Alabama native, as am I. I've actually lost count of how many times I've read the book, watched the film, or seen various productions of the play. The inimitable Gregory Peck was phenomenal in the film! His performance earned him an Oscar.
"To Kill A Mockingbird" is indeed an American classic & one of my all-time favorite books. It's a touching coming of age story interlaced with quiet condemnation of several human prejudices, most notably racism in the American south. It's quite moving & made a huge impression on me as a child.
Nell was a fascinating woman & lived an extraordinary life - from her friendship with the irascible Truman Capote to her reclusive spinster life back in Alabama to the surprising discovery & subsequent publishing of her long-awaited second novel "Go Set A Watchman."
She & Truman were childhood friends. He's the basis for the character "Dill" in the book. Nell fashioned Scout after herself & Atticus represented her father, a successful lawyer.
I truly hope you make time to read it or perhaps listen to it via Audible.
Sincere apologies to all for my fanatical ramblings. :-)
Best wishes from Alabama,
Rebecca
I guess it was easily misunderstandable. I do know "To Kill a Mockingbird", I have seen the movie. What I was refering to was being german myself without having read "Faust".
I know the story, but I have never read it. In fact I have never read anything Goethe. I was trying to imagine myself into Jeff's shoes.
But I take it you read something by Hugo. That's something I couldn't imagine, a french person who has not read anything by Hugo. ;)
Never read Faust, but I watched an anime called Masons Magica. Not unsimilar to watching the movie :[
so what would be the pendant in france?
Hats off to Jon Batiste for getting on the piano for Jeff's mime at 10:29
It's not just Stephen who has magical musical mime props.
You come in to Stephen’s house talking smack, you better be ready to get smacked back haha
"It's true your honor"...
Pencile Dick IS a Legend.
Saw the play yesterday, he did a really good job at making Atticus a more flawed, realistic, and vulnerable character!
I've never laughed more during an interview for any show than I did during that last story 😂
I loved him in Purple Rose of Cairo. He has been around a long time.
"We all get the face we deserve at 50." -George Orwell
That instrumental of Wayne Shorter’s “Yes Or No,” tho!
Love that actual literature and theatre are on the Colbert show ♡
Why are the outros usually loud?
I know, right?
the same reason you clap & cheer after singing happy birthday
Right. I have to either have the volume super low during the interview, or race to hit fast forward until the end of the clip. Both are inconvenient. It's like someone (an assistant) didn't trust the sound readings in post. It can be adjusted.
This guy’s dad sounds like a good man.
The two leads of The Newsroom in the same episode. Almost felt like there was a Reboot on.
Wait, did Jerome do all of the shows? God bless him. This reminds me of one of my favorite childhood jokes. Why does a fart stink? For the benefit of those who didn't hear it.
I love Jeff Daniels
“One time we successfully mated a bulldog and a shi tzu. We called it a bullshit.”
Just love Jeff, he is brilliant !
That’s right, “all before me is dust.” - Caesar
Simon & Schuster - the publishing company? Think Jeff means Waynw & Schuster: the long running Canadian Comics from Ed Sullivan.
Best interview ever. lol.
I needed this, almost as much as i need a new season of The Newsroom. :S **almost**
Newsroom was his greatest roll for me. I’ve had to of seen that series at least 3 times now!
I spied a little channelling of Harry Dunne in that interview at 4:00
I loved him in Arachnophobia, the Jaws of the spider movies. :)
That was really a good movie!
I was just about to comment that he completely missed introducing him for Arachnophobia and The Martian.
Agree with you, except Arachnophobia is more a comedy than horror
@@JigJagging It honestly wasn't until the "Good god, they got the professor" line that I realised they weren't taking it seriously.
That movie is worth watching over John Goodman alone, and I am a bit of an actual arachnophobe.
Jeff, please come back to do the Newsroom. There’re so many materials that Mr. Sorkin can write! We need the Newsroom back!
I wish The Newsroom ran longer. Fantastic show. Great memories of good times when there was something called indisputable truth, and to have a Faux News channel dedicated to disseminating propaganda was something you only found in places like Zimbabwe...or the Third Reich.
Just finishing The Looming Tower. Really excellent.
Jeff Daniels is THE BEST!!!
natural talent, deserves an oscar.
Not the biggest fan of Jeff Daniels as a person but as an actor I will admit he’s fantastic. Especially in Mockingbird.
Loved his speach about america
News, anchor. Best ever!
I still say that Daniels peak performance was as Colonel Lawrence Chamberlain. Damn he made that man of history come alive once again. (In the movies "Gettysburg" and "Gods and generals")
You forgot Gettysburg!!! He was so awesome as COL Chamberlain!
NEWSROOM TOO! That was an awesome show!
His neck is gonna play Mitch McConnell one day.
That and a metric ton of anti-botox...
When I first saw the trailer for the new Cheney movie I would've sworn it was Jeff and not Christian Bale
That’s a mean thing to say .
Most of us will achieve that on some level. That said, I think Jeff looks pretty good.
Hahaha
Jeffe, you’ve always been class act! I love you and your face ☮️💋🐩
I love these two!
oh my god. I got confused and thought this was an episode with Jeff BRIDGES... and I saw the video thumbnail and flipped out like "THATS HIM WITHOUT THE BEARD!?!?!?"
Jeff Daniels has finally grown into his face and it sorta looks like Colin Firth
Layne
Colin Firth in an alternate universe or a funhouse mirror.
I am still mourning the loss of Newsroom
And he played Gen. George Washington, convincingly, in the movie "The Crossing."
Great movie, very underrated......
Refreshing to see intelligence on screen
8 shows a week for a year, saying the same lines over and over again. Like imagine watching a movie every day for a year, except you gotta act it out too. I don't know how they do it, I would die of boredom. Or being a teacher and teaching the same lesson every day or week for years, I don't know how they do it either. I need novelty and variety in my life.
I’m seeing To Kill a Mockingbird tonight. I’m really excited.
Have fun!
Atticus Finch is a hell of a role to fill Jeff.
Pretty sure you got it though!
Blown away that you did not ask him about his work on. The News room and his thoughts on trump
He looks better in his age now than when he was young.
Face growing at 1:54
When I read Atticus, I hear Dumbledore.
"You know him from Godless..."
What?
"...The Looming Tower..."
Huh?
"...and Dumb & Dumber."
Oh yeah.
tried reading to kill a mockingbird as a teenager, got to page 92, felt like nothing was happening (then again i may have just been stupid), put it aside with plans to finish it (halo 3 was calling me), but ended up never going back to it.
Gauss24
You’re still alive so you still can...
His dad brought him up right. Wonderful men.
Well the alternative to that ending would be to cry from laughing. I mean the line will sound fucked up but at least you'll sort of look the part.
Sometimes I find myself looking back...
I wonder if Sorkin's treatment of To Kill A Mockingbird was influenced by Go Set A Watchman. Both stories are told from Scout's perspective, the former when she was a child and the latter as an adult.
I hope someone films Daniel's performance as I'd love to see it.
You know, some people read books after they get out of school and really enjoy them.
Did anyone else noticed Jeff Daniels could play Bush senior who just died in a heartwarming biopic? Assuming you don't want to get all the warmongering part of his life.
The pneumatic tube system is a great idea!
