No! A $10,000 ticket and if they can't pay it sell their car and if the car doesn't cover the fine garnish their paycheck and if they're retired garnish their check period. They'll stop then. Americans are a hard headed people. You have to body slam'em in that pocket. And if they do it again after that ten straight years in prison.

And misuse of a plackard like using a relatives that isnt there they also fine up to $800 for that and confiscate the plackard.

I was a reserve traffic safety officer and could only write parking violations. I would always give the person parking in a
handicapped space the chance to move their car. I learned very fast that they were so full of themselves that they never
would admit the placard wasn't theirs. It was always so satisfying to run their license and find out they had several tickets
they hadn't paid. The look on their face as their car was towed away made my day.

I'm all for this! I wish cops would crack down on this in my area. But I would also encourage people to not jump to conclusions that someone's not disabled because they don't "look" disabled. Plenty of people look fine on the outside but have mobility issues anyway.

  • @caseythompson474

What saddens me is most places in my area won’t do anything about illegal parking. I have 2 grocery stores I will go to where they know me and won’t call 911 if I pass out which is a symptom of one of my chronic illnesses. Their scooters are always in good working order as well. Here in my state they put your name on your placard and in some other states they put the persons picture which they should do everywhere although I understand some states can’t afford it. What burns me, and my dad does this but I will yell at him for it, when people park on the lines next to handicap spots! They fail to realize they’re there for people with side deploying ramps, not for carts or someone who just has to run in real quick. I went to a big box store with my dad a few years back and they had no spaces. He walks better than I do and he tried to park on the lines. I told him if he did I’d call the cops on him! I use a wheelchair and sometimes a rollator but if there’s a regular spot within the first three by a handicap I’ll save the handicap for someone who might need it more than me. I don’t like anyone who breaks the rules and I don’t care if they’re family! They need to raise the penalty and actually enforce it. I’m 41 and have had people question my placard and I tell them I’d be happy to show my ID. When driving my dads car a few months ago, a local cop stopped me because he has the actual plate and I had my placard hanging on the mirror. The cop asked why I had both because it’s not legal here. I told her it was my dads car and I can’t legally use his so I put mine up. You would be surprised at how she took that. She said she had never seen anyone follow the law like that. I told her I wasn’t trying to get my dads tag or my placard revoked for misuse. She said she appreciated honesty.

There are several issues with people that park in handicapped parking without authorization. 1. Unable to see/read/understand the signage. These people also have the same issue with speed limit signs, no U turns, no left/right turns, etc. 2. Privileged status. Many feel why should the best parking spots be only for the handicapped only? 3. State legal definition of “parking.” To stop at a handicapped slot, with the driver remaining at the wheel, is not parking. Parking involves leaving the car without a driver. Yes, I know, the signs state reserved for those with a handicapped permit, temporary and permanent. But hey, I just know what excuses people use.

Have you ever heard of heart disease? It makes it so they can only go short distances before having chest pains and doing that to much can cause cardiac arrest...espeically in someone that has a lot of blockage in their arteries...how about neurological disorders? I have POTS which makes it so i cant walk far or a long time before i pass out..heat also shortens this distance. Some days it is just bad, because it is a autonomic nervous system disorder...which btw a store is level, unlike a parking lot, which is why the walking inside a building is less stressful on the body..also it is either air conditioned or heated compared to outside...meaning the human is walking a level area that is temp controled for comfort. So much different then outside. Most that i know that can take a normal spot when they can, will.

It is now January 2021. In metro Atlanta GA the fine is $500 for illegally parking in a specified handicapped parking space. Personally I feel that is too low but it is a hefty sum. I do not know if it increases with additional violations but it should. Maybe double it each time. $500, $1,000, $2,000, $4,000, $8000. After the $8,000 ticket suspend the driver's license for a minimum of a year. I was offered a handicapped parking placard due to an inop brain tumor diagnosis. I declined, I wanted to be as independent as possible for as long as possible. I may soon need to rethink that decision but I am thankful it is an option. And I appreciate law enforcement taking action re violators. Talk isn't effective. A hefty fine is definitely the most effective deterrent.

In part, this issue is because most city agencies do not do their job enforcing the laws protecting the disabled, no priority is assigned to correct or enforce the law. Large fines, towing, these actions can make money to pay for enforcement. If tickets were made payable when people get their car sticker, people would have no choice but to pay or no sticker, and another ticket and fine. It can be a real legitimate moneymaker for a city and protect the innocent.

Some states allow handicapped persons take a course and they can write tickets for illegally parked vehicles in handicapped parking spots. They can write a ticket up to $5,00.00 per ticket. Let's make that a national law. They also legally can have vehicles towed for illegally parking in a handicapped spot.
