  • Flatlocking Narrow seams on a Finishing Touch, 14SH654, Serger.
All went well, this is not my favorite stitch, I prefer ones that I can topstitch or coverstitch.
Doing some flatlocking on various fabrics, using the cutting blade position to change the width of the flatlock, for about 2.5mm at the narrowest and about 4.75mm at its widest. The needle in the right position, if you move the needle to the left position, will add about 2mm to both of the previous widths.
After testing the flatlocking stitch on the Finishing Touch, can only do flatlock that folds over the fabrics in the seam allowance, not doing the raw edge to raw edge that other machines can do. My Professional 5 serger, I can do the raw edge to raw edge. I have tried many different techniques, from dropping the cutting blade and letting so loopers hand in mid air, every mix of tensions, maxilock, surelock, and gutterman threads. Not that bothered by it don’t use this stitch much anyhow.
With the Finishing Touch, the suggested setting for tension, is needle at .5, upper looper at 5 and lower looper at 7. I am using bulky nylon in the loopers so, those needed a bit of tweaking, I used needle at 1.25, upper lopper at 5 and lower looper at 6.
Also stitch width/density is at 1 and differential was lowered by 2 clicks. For flatlocking, I did not have any luck going any lower on the stitch width/density. The machine can go down to F (Fine), but I think that can only be used in the rolled hem stitch.
Test fabric today lightweight cotton/lycra, poly/lycra, two different wt scuba knits (265gsm and a 325gsm), tee-shirt, medium cotton/lycra.
Be kind, costs you nothing, maybe worth everything to another person today.

Thank you for the clarity in your video. I am wondering about mid weight scuba knit with three layers…how to deal with the sandwich?

How long have you had your machine and do you recommend it?
