Simple and Quick Jeep JL/JT Aux Battery Delete

- The Jeep JL and JT have Aux batteries. Yep, you heard me correctly, there are two batteries. One for starting the engine and the other is used to keep things running during the Auto Stop/Start cycles. While this sounds great, there are issues when the Aux battery starts to die. Once you Aux battery stops holding its charge, it will cause your main battery to drain; thus you not being able to start your engine. The other common issue is with the Aux battery’s voltage low it will block you from starting the engine even with a fully charged main battery. Lastly, the Aux battery is not the easiest thing to change. So, don’t let the Aux battery leave you stranded - get it disabled/bypassed today.

The F42 fuse removal will bypass ESS from Aux battery but NOT delete function. It will just move function to Main battery once cables are removed. You will still to use dashboard button to Auto/Start off. Or use a Tazer or Autostop Eliminator plug in for custom program.
Correct - once the fuse is removed you need to take care of the cables. And I do use the Tazer to keep the Auto Start/Stop disabled.
NO IT DOESNT again more idiots with terrible information stop telling people this u will still kill ur aux battery and be stranded
Yes I noticed still shutting off and battery voltage drops but jumps back up as soon as I push button on the dashboard
Just figured out that it does not disable ESS. Guess I'll keep hitting the button.
@anthony.catalano You can use the TazerJL to remove the need to hit that button after every start.
Thank you. Saved me big money by canceling dealership appointment.. 10 minute fix.
Thanks for this simple and short video. I ran into this exact problem recently and had no idea what had caused it. Luckily mine was still under warranty and the dealer has to fix it (replace the aux battery). Now the ESS doesn’t function anymore-and I hated it anyway.
I did that on my 2018 Rubicon along with an Autostop Eliminator, but never removed a fuse. Never had any problems but sold it shortly afterwards. The thing was a lemon.
Thank you Brad. I got stranded in middle of the freeway
Sorry you got stranded, and hope this saved you a trip to the dealer/repair shop.
@@BradKoester I went ahead and followed your advice. I hope it works 🙏
@@MrJesu84 been running my Jeep with this for over a year now and no issues.
@@BradKoester mine turned off on the freeway 2 days ago while I was driving 50 mph . I'm taking it to the jeep service department
This definitely sounds like a potential bigger issue. If you don’t mind, could you share what the problem is when you get it back?
My daughters New JL was having the rear camera go out and not work after a few months. We bypassed the aux battery and now the camera works fine. Apparently the aux battery was already dying after a few months. Such a poor system. I love the jeeps but maybe that system needs some actual thought put to it
Thank you. What a difficult battery to remove. Great video.
No kidding 😀
FYI, I have a JL (2023 High Tide) 3.6 manufactured 1-23 by the vin sticker. There is no longer a aux battery below the fuse box. first clue was the neg batt. cable has changed to a single large wire. (If your 22 has the single wire neg connection it's probably the same). there is still they tray but no longer a battery. Not sure if they changed the system due to issues or not, just thought i would save you some time. I didn't see a TSB addressing this.
Interesting. Have not seen any TSBs yet, but will keep looking.
Is yours an Etorque engine? Wondering if that might be why.
I have a 2021 Sahara. It only has 1 neg lead to battery also.
How do you know which cable is the aux one to disconnet?
This is really good to know, thank you!
You're so welcome!
another easy way is just pull out the hood plunger switch and zip tie it so it's not functional. The auto start will not work if it thinks the hood is up. As you face the jeep with the hood open you will see 2 plunger switches remove the one on the right.
Just did this and my light is still on. Does that mean it isn’t the aux battery?
i'm getting rid of my '21 GLadiator because of this..gone thru 2 dead batteries already, just tired of dealing with it in general.. plenty of vehicles with the start/stop that don't drain the battery..
I get it. And have wondered why they went the route of dual batteries for this.
I have a 2021 4 cylinder. If the aux is dead and you do this process will the dead aux still drain the main battery?
Nope it will no longer drain your main battery.
Does my 2019 jeep trail hawk have the same set up? I don't see two cables go into negative main battery on my.
So i can do this and remove the aux battery completely from the jeep ?? Pretty sure my is dead and would rather not replace it if i dont have too
Yes you can remove the aux battery. I removed my when I changed my oil last time.
Remove the aux battery and pull the positive terminal up and connect it to the main battery and you wont have to remove any fuses. Just zip tie the aux ground off out of the way.
Do you have to reconnect the top aux Ground Cable when removing the aux battery completely?
@elbadboylopez mine is still disconnected
No I taped the end up and put it out of the way@@elbadboylopez
Great job.
After this disconnect, will I still be able to jump start the jeep normally, if needed?
Yes you will be able to.
Every video say connect the wire and fuse back up when going to the dealer. Why, if warranty has expired? Wouldnt that bring up the dash warning again so they will try to ding you for more money? Or is there something else they would go after if it wasnt hooked up?
If warranty is expired, then there is no need. I guess I should of said that it is easy to reverse if ever you needed/wanted to.
Im getting the AUX message, went to remove the AUX battery battery from behind the fender liner, it’s NOT inside the box. Went and check my fuse box and Fuse 42 is NOT there. I bought this New straight off the delivery truck in 2021…. So do I just replace the main battery with a stronger one ?
You might have an e-torque version. If this is what you have, there is no aux battery due to the e-torque configuration.
Thank you.
Thank you sir!!!
I still have have a big glowing A! showing on my dash. How Do I get rid of that?
I can’t tell from your video what cable is going to the Aux Battery? My 18 JL Rubicon doesn’t seem to have that cable.
There are a ‘few’ JLs that do not have the Aux batteries.
Thank you very much!!
👍
Does my 2019 jeep trail hawk have the same set up?
Nope, didn't work on mine. Pulled the fuse and disconnected the negative terminal on the auxiliary battery and the start/stop feature continued to work. I ended up having to by a module that connects inline with the start/stop button and now it stays off without me having to push the stupid button.
Pulling the fuse and the negative is to bypass the Aux battery. This will not disable the stop/start. You will need a programmer like the Tazer or such to disable it via software. There is another way, you can pull one of the hood plungers to disable stop/start.
I did that removing fuse 42 and ground, my ess still operated
W hat would happen if, under warranty, and everything is disconnected and you bring the Jeep in for service without reconnecting the battery and reinstalling the fuse?
Great question. That really depends on the dealer that you take it to. Some are great and others not so much. So if you have one that is not so good, I would reinstall the fuse and hook the negative cable back up. I would treat this the same as the Tazer if you are running one.
Thank you@@BradKoester
Does it cause lights on the dash or remote start to fail?
No lights and everything works!
Thanks for sharing. I just unhooked mine on my 2019 JL. No problems except someone must have already pulled the fuse. I found the hole, no fuse. Did not want that aux battery to die and strand my wife. I don't like nor do I use that ESS anyways.
Can you just pull fuse? Why do you need to take off the battery cable also?
If you don’t disconnect the cable or remove the Aux battery, it will still drain your main battery. Disconnecting it will break the connection to the Aux battery and it will no longer be able to drain the main battery.
Does this effect remote start? I have the hood plunger disconnected so my ess doesn’t work, but I’m running into remote start issues which is being caused by the aux battery (I think?)…..
I did not take the hood plunger method as there are some side effects. The way that I went (with the Tazer to disable the stop/start) has no side effects and everything has been running like normal. Now when the Aux battery starts to die, all kinds of weird things happen (sometimes not starting, killing the main battery, and some of the electronics not functioning).
@@BradKoester thanks, mines a 2020, I want to try this method. I can pull the fuse. But I’m not sure which Neg terminal remove and tape up ?
When I did this, my backup camera didn't work, and my off-road pages disappeared from my multimedia screen.
I have a 2021.
That is weird. Maybe you can try moving the positive lead from the Aux battery to the positive terminal on the main battery. And leave the fuse in. This should trick the computer to think the Aux battery is still there.
I did this and lost the remote start capability. 2020 JL 3.6 non etorque and continued getting the “auxiliary switches not available while battery is charging” message.
Interesting and thanks for sharing. I would have tested this myself however, I do not have the remote start nor the factory aux switches. Running aftermarket on both of them.
Update. I did the following.
Pulled Fuse #42
Disconnected Aux Negative and wrapped it.
Disconnected main battery negative and positive for 45 minutes.
ReConnected the battery.
Waited another 30 minutes.
Remote start now works, no more “Auxiliary” Message.
Thank you for the video!
@@easternzone7869you didn't even have to do that. You could have just drive it around for awhile and it will work.
What about a 2.4 2018 jlu? My f42 states pcr ctrl feed (ess)/spare (bsg)*
Sorry, not fully sure about anything other than the 3.6.
Do you have to have the Auto start turned off with a tazer for this to work?
I do have the auto start/stop disabled with the Tazer.
No, you don't. But having the fuse pulled will require that you manually restart the Jeep EVERY time ESS turns it off. It's a pain in the ass not having it disabled.
I removed mine 4 years ago
Did you leave the auto start battery in the Jeep?
I have for now, but planning to remove it when I change the oil next time.
Hey all, if for some reason you want to change or just remove the aux battery, just pull off the the passenger side fender and wheel well liner - it is much much easier, i changed mine on a 2018 jl couple years back and as i recall it was 3 or 4 screws and a push pin, thats it - took about 45min total - you can find the how to on youtube.
However, i just eliminated my aux battery because it, in less than 2 years is dead again!
What a crap design for a starting system, this one will go into the Crap category along with the crap steering system.
Have you done the TSB to replace the steering box? After getting mine changed for the steel one, no more issues for my Jeep.
Did u connect the positive from the aux to the main battery, that’s what everyone says to do
Yes
Why not just removed that weight? Connect the red to the main battery and tape the black wire??
It is fully removed now.
QuestionS:
#1 You by-passed the auto stop/start with a tazer , but are still having issues... So now, you want to remove the 42 fuse and disconnect the aux negative? Explain.
#2 Not one of the RUclips Aux delete experts have ever produced a wiring diagram showing what it also is used for.
That info is out there . The aux only runs all the accessories when the Jeep shuts down in stop start mode the main battery starts the vehicle.
I remember turning one of the Hood open sensors upside down which disabled the ESS function. Put a piece of black tape over the yellow light on the dash, no problems.
How do you know which ground is the correct one to disconnect? I have 2020 wrangler. We did the steps and it appears its working. Would it start if it’s the wrong ground?
No it would not start without being grounded. The cable to disconnect is the one that does not go to the chassis ground. You have the right one.
@@BradKoester thanks
I have a 2018 and have tried bypassing and isolating the negative cables however it starts and runs with either one of them hooked up.
Couple of years? Itll do it in one year or less.
Is the aux battery good for anything for anyone?
Good at failing and causing issues 😀
What about 2020 jeep gladiator??
Should also be the same for the Gladiator with the 3.6.
So I did all that and it completely killed the jeep...now nothing works
Hey, I would double check which negative cable was disconnected. If the wrong cable is disconnected, it will cause this issue.
Yeah so on a 2020 the cable without the bracket and stud stays on. After I connected that one and taped the smaller one the Jeep started and the stop start light turned off. I also did pull the F42 fuse.
The confusing part now is that the stop start function now works. It hasn't worked in a year.
I really dislike the stop/start systems. I have mine disabled via the TazerJL.
@@BradKoester I just push the free button on the dash...it really isn't any hassle...problem with mine is the stop start should be disabled with the fuse gone and ground cable uncooked...but it isn't
Does this bring on the ‘ESS service required’ warning in the cluster?
No warning lights at all.
I did this and when I turned the jeep the battery drained. Turned the jeep off and the battery was dead.
Great way to cause problems
Jeep is junk
