  • Join me as I hike the 2,220m Mt. Jiali in Miaoli and learn a little about the history of the region that once supplied more than 50 percent of the world’s camphor, enabling production of celluloid for photography and movie making, early plastics and munitions.

Maybe you could do an episode on the camphor war in Taiwan. Technically not really a full scale war, but it was started by the British trading companies who were angry at Qing from setting up an monopoly of the camphor business, and got British warships to shell and occupy Fort Zeelandia in Tainan. Good times. Too bad they stopped as soon as Qing gave the entire camphor business to the British companies.

@@AsiaHikelopedia It definitely was a tougher terraine, looking at all those taller massive tree trunks on that mountain range, not Hills!!!
Beautiful n refreshing sound of water cascading down the slopes! Finally civilisation at the top!!!! Wow, what a stunning view of the thick clouds just below n the beautiful sunshine n blue sky above, what a sight!!!!
I can relate with you, my calves muscles n achilles were very sored for the next few days after the climb up the Rokko mountains in Kobe. Hope you will do more muscles strengthening before another mountain climb, especially the achilles tendons.
Regarding the Juniper trees, chinese used alot of sandalwood, camphor, menthol crystals, eucalyptus oil and other essential oils for their medicated oils n aroma oil that are basically used for nausae/dizziness, headaches, mosquito bites, n seasickness. I have been using Axe(Chinese) oil faithfully for years, helps when l caught a cold or headaches. Traditional chinese Herbal concoctions are organic!
Thank you Richard for that hike n scenery. 🙏 You looked very tired after that climb! Hope you rested enough before your next mountain hike!
