- Taroko Gorge in Taiwan is famous for its stunning scenery. But did you know you can also hike there? One of the trails - the Zhuilu Old Trail (錐麓古道) - is probably one of the scariest walks you could ever do. Join Richard and hiking buddy Hugo as they scale the heights and overcome their fears to complete one of Taiwan’s most hair-raising and spectacular day hikes.

The Trail
The trail involves a 3.1km (~2 miles) return trek to the Cliff Outpost. The first 2.5km is pretty much all uphill as you gain around 600m in altitude, passing what remains of the old Badagang Police Station to reach the cliff section. From here the 1m-wide path slopes gently and is not difficult, although you must pay careful attention. People have died on this trail due to their own negligence. It can anywhere between 3-5 hours depending on your pace/fitness.
Booking the Trail
Reserving a place is pretty straightforward, although it is understandably popular. You can book your spot on the trail up to 30 days in advance on the Taiwan National Park Permit website (English). The number of places is limited to 96 on weekdays and 156 on holidays/weekends. Weekends fill up rapidly so you need to plan ahead and book as soon as they become available on the site to avoid disappointment.
On the day of the hike you need to be at the trailhead between 7am and 10am. Arrive late and you may not be admitted. The trailhead is located at the entrance to Swallow Grotto (燕子口) and parking is available around 500m away (again arriving earlier is better.)
Travel Logistics
Swallow Grotto is around a 30-minute car or taxi ride from Hualien City, or around 15 minutes from the town of Xincheng (新城) - the nearest train station to Taroko.
To get there on the bus, take Hualien Bus 1133 or 1133A (bound for Tianxiang), the 1126 to Luoshao, or the 1141 (Lishan).
From Xincheng or Xincheng train station (Taroko National Park Headquarters station) take Taroko Bus 302.
Drones
You need a permit to fly a drone in Taroko Gorge, but the permit process is quite straightforward. You can download the form and regulations from the National Park website (www.taroko.gov....

很喜歡這個地方，特別是豐富的歷史，沿路大家都在瘋狂拍網美照也是夠狂的
錐路古道有生之年一定要去一趟，雖然路窄但安全措施做的很好，只要驚險路段緊抓著安全繩索一切就沒問題，照片或影片看起來或許會很恐怖，但實際在現場時就不會害怕。我們以前一直是站在太魯閣的路上往下看峽谷，但錐路古道是站在更高處看整個峽谷，當然是更壯觀更美麗了。這一段路往返時間不長，坡度也不長，除非你有嚴重懼高症否則真的是老少咸宜。

Great hike! If you are looking for longer overnight backpacking trips, check out 北一段, 能高安東軍(北三段), and 南二段. These routes are not too difficult, but have some of the most stunning views in Taiwan!

Absolutely stunning scenery, thanks for sharing! I do get vertigo in my older age so this was a great way to see this. One suggestion though - please consider not using that sort of music ever again as it really takes you out of the moments you are sharing. It would have been better with no music. That’s my only critique though. Around 10-11 minutes in when you had to pass other people on the trail reminded me of descending into the Grand Canyon when we had to get out of the way for the people on donkeys passing us. I didn’t have vertigo then but no way would I get on a donkey going into the the Grand Canyon,, I think it would have been way too scary. Hope you and the family are doing well! Take care matey, what is the channel that Andy told me about that you have started?
Look for the East Yushan trail from Walami in Hualien. You'll find some good trails too. If you like mountain try the Yushan front peak. They will drive you from the Tatajia camping area to the starting point platform.

It was, but the views make the terror worthwhile.
Curious whether it's a good hike in late November or it's best avoided because of early winter rains.
If the weather is poor they won't let you on the trail on the day. So it's a bit of a lottery in that respect.

Thanks. It is part of a much longer trail, but it's closed off for safety reasons these days I believe. Landslides, etc.

It's 3km now. Oddly enough. I remember this famous trail's about 11 km back in 2015. I was deeply impressed with the ruin of villages and the history of Taroko war taking place in 1914. There's another trail was not allowed to enter except the taroko people. Thanks for your clip. I do love suspension bridges, and there are so many in the pastoral region.
Yeah, I think a typhoon damaged the trail a few years ago and it's too dangerous to go beyond 3km. It's still a good 1/2 to full day hike though.
It doesn't look too bad, but I know some of my friends would not able to do it. It seems to be a short hike but the humidity makes it harder. The view though, just gorgeous. If I have the opportunity. I would like to do this hike as well. I wouldn't know it exist until I saw your video.
It's not long (6.5km return), but when it's really hot it's not easy. Plus you walk very slowly along the cliff section so it takes at least 5 hours in total. Definitely worth it!

I am a local, but I only went to hike this trail last year. Somehow the trail looks a little narrow on your footage then as I remembered well maybe I am just smaller built.
