This is why I always roll my eyes at "inspirational" crap like "Never Give Up". Professionals know that sometimes giving up is the best course of action.
Not a fail Richard , it's good that you made the call not to continue for safety reasons and you were mindful of the risks in the eminent darkness . I hope Tim wasn't too disappointed but the hike is still there for another time :-)
This video probably saved a few people a lot of grief when planning their hikes but yeah, it's not all glory and fun, mother nature sometimes doesn't cooperate and you got to be prepared. A good one, Richard. Onwards and forward
No worries, there is always another time, better safe than sorry!☺ Read many stories of hikers getting lost or venturing into another dimension and never to return, so please take care!
Cant agreed more! It’s better to be well than under prepared. Years back when I climbed a volcano I thought I was physically fit but all the elements teaches me never underestimate the nature.
There's a happy ending mate. You're still here and you show people that you're here to have fun, not risk your life. I'm sure your family are glad to see you and your friend still has a high regard of your friendship. I for one am not disappointed cause I used to take Venturers on 4 day hikes and we stick together as a unit. See you next week, over and out😁😁😁
Great call to stop the hike. Friendly reminder - satellite communication device is very important for such a long trip. I am looking forward to seeing your video. Have a good weekend.
You definitely made a right decision without taking the unmanageable risks. The mountains won’t go away and are waiting for your visit. Stay healthy and active.
I turned back on three 100-peak hikes when I was in Taiwan. Even we're prepared for the rain with the right gear, sometimes the weather just made the whole experience too miserable to continue.
Richard, nothing to be sorry nor apologize for. Go on and post the video in future even it the hikes did not turn out right, that is reality. Good try and there is always another day to conquer the peak. On the lighter side, I reckon the trip failed because you did not bring along your canary.......hahaha....he would have forecast the weather more accurately for you. Cheers and see you next week.
You are right Richard. Good decision of returning. Knowing your limit and don't push too much and taking the consideration of safety of visibility is important, there is always another time to achieve it. Is the progress of hiking and learning from it. Good that you share with us. We definitely have learn from your mistake. You done a great job Richard 👍🏻👍🏻
Nice attempt! A friend and I recently had a very enjoyable climb up Snow Mt. Each hiking trip is a lesson, and ultimately I don’t think it matters if it’s a success or failure. The experience is what matters.
Good move Richard. First, rain pants. So important in Taiwan. They can prevent soaked pants, hypothermia and even keep you warm on a winter windy day. Second, the up and back to Jia Yang and Xiao Jian is long and extremely treacherous from Youpolan. It took us 14 hours. Lots of technical hiking and, rocks, roots, and false peaks. VERY risky on a wet day!!! The view from Jia Yang is amazing so the weather you had would have been a disappoint. Well done turning back. Mountains will always be there is what we say. On on to the next peak.
Fully agree. I travelled to Tasmania and on the 2nd day into the walk decided to turn back about 1 day from the Walls of Jerusalem camp site. This was due to environmental factors. It was still a generally enjoyable trip. Just cut short. I always also say, "the mountain will always be there". Better to enjoy the moment and the journey, the company and the experiences.
There's nothing wrong with the call you made, Richard - there are far too many video's of people doing silly things, getting hurt, etc. so it is refreshing to see one where your levels of experience and maturity show through in your decision to return before the boundary where things go from safe to unsafe is stepped over. I hope this video reaches many people so they can learn that tomorrow is another day, and the mountain won't go away!
I don't think it's a sad story, as a matter of fact, it's a good reminder lesson, anyone who wishes to do or now doing the 百岳, encountering the situation you had at the beginning by being too confident (including myself), ignoring the risks behind. It is not only the physical strength needed but the preparation that could save you from any incident inside the remote mountains, particularly in Taiwan mountains. I recalled one time I met a hiking group in 合歡山, who came from Swissland, teasing and laughing at the local indigenous guide wearing rain boots for hiking. I did hope they did not encounter any rain during their trekking going up to 奇萊, however, the chance is low. The unexpected heavy rain is a killer during the whole trip, when you soaked wet, the humid along with the cold temperature could easily cause life in danger. There are many forums offering tips and advice for 百岳, worth having a look. Hikers in Taiwan always say the mountains are always there waiting for you, in front of those high mountains be humble always. Enjoy your following trips!
Yeah, thanks. I'm just bummed about the whole thing. I also laughed about the rain boots at first - many years ago, but I know now why they wear them! I will try one day.
This failure will be the success for future hikes for you and others! It's not always smooth sailing in life. This video is the perfect example. That was the right call and glad you are safe. Well, at least you have a new hiking friend! Looking forward to the next video! 😀
Sensible man, stop knocking yourself. These things happen regardless of how much experience you have. You did exactly the right thing and I’m sure your wife and children are glad you did. 👍🏻
Well, this thing happened. We need to take safety measurements for the 1st place. Thank you for the video and I hope you can make it to the submit next time! 😊😊
This is why I always roll my eyes at "inspirational" crap like "Never Give Up". Professionals know that sometimes giving up is the best course of action.
Thanks!
when live is on the line....yes you should give up sometimes.
Thanks!
No worries, there is always another time, better safe than sorry!☺ Read many stories of hikers getting lost or venturing into another dimension and never to return, so please take care!
Smart decision. Just come back some other time. It's there. Always. Cheers!
It's still a good experience for audience, thanks for sharing.
Absolutely!
You make a good risk assessment!
Cant agreed more! It’s better to be well than under prepared. Years back when I climbed a volcano I thought I was physically fit but all the elements teaches me never underestimate the nature.
Safe come first, this video teach us stop hiking and return whenever there is a safety issue.
See you next week, over and out😁😁😁
Good call to turn back. You didn't fail, you just didn't finish the hike, come back and finish it another day 🙂
Good video. It's not a sad story, but respecting the elements is an important life lesson.
Most important thing is you are safe & sound! Can always try again next time :)
Very true!
The best part of climbing is having a hot meal after a good sleep
I think you made a right decision at the right time. God bless you.
I'm glad you shared this video. I love raw hiking experience. Sometimes a failed experience is even more useful for most audience.
You made the right decision.
Safety is always the first priority.
Thanks for sharing.
Great call to stop the hike. Friendly reminder - satellite communication device is very important for such a long trip. I am looking forward to seeing your video. Have a good weekend.
Great tip! If you notice I have a Garmin on my backpack!
Good call. Your safety is atmost important. Can always go back next time.
You made a correct decition
I like your video
You definitely made a right decision without taking the unmanageable risks. The mountains won’t go away and are waiting for your visit. Stay healthy and active.

Safety first! Especially after watching the rescue video of Beast Runners 跑山獸. Mountain would be always there waiting, no need to rush :)
That was great! You made a good decision. The peak is always there, but life is the most valuable.
You are right Richard. Good decision of returning. Is the progress of hiking and learning from it. Good that you share with us. We definitely have learn from your mistake. You done a great job Richard 👍🏻👍🏻
You did a good job already. Don't worry, you can always go back and try again at anytime. Good Luck !!
We can all learn from what you have leaned so still good
You make a good decision.
SAFETY 1ST.
Wise decision.
Such kind of video with advice would be much valuable than the version with perfect scenes.
You made the right decision! The mountains will be there whenever you are well prepared. Safety always comes first!
Nice attempt! A friend and I recently had a very enjoyable climb up Snow Mt. Each hiking trip is a lesson, and ultimately I don’t think it matters if it’s a success or failure. The experience is what matters.
agreed. As long as you make it back, it is not a failure. Something learned is always a success.
Good decision! Safety always first!
Hey, great video still. You are right, safety is paramount and the mountain will always be there.
Very true!

what's "false peaks" ?
Another interesting video. Things don’t always go to plan

I'm so happy to see you alive and filming the video
I like your point of view.
may be you could add a poncho to your kit. it may not the best solution but it can sure help in some case.
Thanks. I do use a poncho sometimes. Although I don't think it would have helped on that day!
Every trip was a good trip Richard! Good call, if I was there together I would do the same.
The final goal is to be back safely always.
Light

@@AsiaHikelopedia Opt the one with spikes mounting underneath, that helps when across the muddy area....
You can always come back, pullout is for next time challenge, great vid!

By far the most important advice ever 👍 Good call
Better safe than sorry. Good judgement.
Keep it up! Thanks for sharing. It's a good experience. Wish you well!
Its a good call! just another lesson! thanks for showing this part too!
Well, this thing happened. We need to take safety measurements for the 1st place.
Thank you for the video and I hope you can make it to the submit next time! 😊😊
I hope so too
