Mid altitude mountains in Taiwan are very hard, but also very magic.
After resctriction in Taiwan I plan this trip to Alisha 阿里山 from Xinii 信義.
Shen A Ancient Trail 神阿古道 was recently maintained and it is awesome and direct connection to Alishan.
I plan 40km loop over wild ridge to 松山 Song Shan (over 望美山, 望高瞭望台, 瓊山) and reach Alishan railway in 石猴分道 Shihou railway station (from there can descent to 水漾森林 Shuiyang forest).
Ascent to 松山 Song Shan was 15km with 2000m climb on not easy terrain. I miss turn to ridge and continued on old forest road around 1700m (follow marking and gps carefully).
On old railway I pass several bridges and dark tunnels and walk over 眠月 Mianyue Stone Monkey and 塔山 Ta Shan station where is 500m longest tunnel which has collapse in the middle, it is very dark. I reach Alishan 阿里山 (十字分道 Shizifendao Station).
From there is not far for upper entry to 神阿古道 Shen A Ancient Trail which was maintained in Spring 2021. It is very steep with climb or descent of 1300m on 6km, down to 神木村 Shenmu village.

already 9 years in Taiwan and did not get bored to do these trips for day or for high mountains overnight.
Taiwan is beutiful and has many places which cannot reach easily and made them even more attractive.

good observation, I did not mentioned the ridge trails has this name 馬努多斯獵人古道. Do it in one day is really way too much what standard hiker can do. So these trips need really plan well and count with any problem

Anyways i once worked in a nursing home in Taiwan for less than 2 years, had not had the chance or opportunity to see your "green" beauty but thanks to Taiwan i discovered/tasted the great Bubble Tea, i luv your bubble tea...

thank you. There are many hikers in Taiwan, everyone do in different way. I found that I can cover long distance or be faster, and I like this style. Maybe some foreigners really can bear more risk, but actually behind each trip is some preparation or at least lot of experience (I do this over 9 years since I came to Taiwan)

that tunnel is really dark, but I know about it so I was mentally prepared.

The place you walked through is really scary to me, be like in the middle of no where. How can you find and determine your following steps….two thumbs up to you 👍👍
some direction in Taiwan are bit scary. Especailly in mid altitude 1000~2000m. Also never know how will be the conditon of it.
Always has two gps and prepare backup plan(s). Sometimes it doesn`t go so well, but it teach me lot.
I do this already 8+ years in Taiwan. So more videos coming.

謝謝你的影片，我很喜歡鐵道，而且我知道在日本時代眠月線在石猴之後還有延伸大約5~6公里的路段，但是我沒有登山經驗所以不敢親自探訪，所以我很好奇4:47開始出現的鐵道遺跡是否就是石猴之後的路段遺跡
hikers know just ~500m behind Rock Moneky (石猴車站), no more is visited, but I believe there must be more and I was already thinking about that too
(for search I recently also take look to old maps from 1924 or 1956 to see more inforamtion, it is amazing how old map has more detail. they are not accurate but gives you more idea about terrain, they are hand draw that time)

that first climb to Songshan is not easy and not easy to navigate.
All route is too late if you have not experience with light hiking to running
好奇，那是通往阿里山上的小火車軌道嗎？是永久性關閉了？1997年搭過一次小火車到阿里山，記憶猶新！
in main Alishan is still train. But here was probably damaged before 2000, also not sure. Try google 石猴遊憩區 and can find more history about end of this railway

Cannot. Some trips are just wet. From rain or from wet plants.
So trail running shoes are light and slightly has chance get dry and back to comfortable. Do not use gorotex in Asia, it will not breath that fast.
For mountains I use wool socks, never cotton, synthetic are fine too

I assumed that the narrow gauge railroad was put in years ago for logging purposes, but the stations give me idea that people lived in these mountains at one time? Now I ssume the section that operates is for tourists? In a more recent video you mentioned "artificial forest" and I assume you mean an area that was logged clear and then replanted so the trees are all the same age. Some of the views you have shown in this and other videos make me cringe, don't slip. I enjoy the videos very much!

dont you think its strange to wear 2 m asks with no one around in the mountains???...is that to obey the mandate or by choice?...but great video thanks for the content...what kind of sandals or "shoes" would you recommend for walking on river rocks...(river tracing in Taiwan?)
it is very strange and it was for filming. Frankly it was time of semi lock down and even National Parks were closed. This is not NP, but rule wear mask is strict everywhere. Even now still need, so it is still kind of speculative to publish photos or videos without mask... They could theoretically fine you and proof by photos... :]
No any shoes are perfect. Usually older shoes are better for rivers. I have now old pair (1300km) of Nike Wildhorse for play in stream and walk on these stones. Still need be careful but soft sole has good response.

everyone has different needs. For this trip I did very light, just waterproof jacket, but I have many years experience with these long runs.

I used to do this kind of trips in mid altitude for one day already many years, never had the feeling I need helmet.
In high mountains or over several days I take it because if any injury it can be more troubling due cold weather and remoted areas often without any phone receptions.

it is just long and some parts need really focus on ribbons. Open Source Map (OSM) has important trails and seems accurate for this trip.
