Gas Stations and Sonic Sound Effects - Why?

- Over the years, I've noticed tons of convenience stores using Sonic the Hedgehog sound effects when scanning items. I've never really questioned it - until today.

fire rises no you dont understand i just want to know why it goes like that
eh he said local stations, he's probably been in most of them enough times that he's a familiar non-threatening patron. He also probably just asked if they ever noticed the sonic sound the till plays than casually brought up hes trying to figure out if its certain brands of tills that do it or not and most people will engage in those conversations if their interest is peaked and you seem sane.

It still leaves the question "Why?" of alllllllll the sound effects that they could've chosen, they used the coin pick up sound for a reason.

The customer I rang in heard it too and me and him asked eachother if we both heard the ring sound. He said of course and I gave him a free chocolate bar so we could hear it again.
We did and the next day I asked my manager to come over to the register and I bought myself some gum and he heard the noise too. he shrugged it off so I asked him what brand of register we have and he said Gilbarco Veeder-Root.
