Heartworm developer here - just wanted to thank you again Nexpo for showcasing my game. There's a new demo out on steam now and the love and outreach from your audience has been amazing. My dream is to complete the game and this spotlight is a huge help in getting there.
Great work!
I apologize for my previous mistake

We're the developers of Loveland! Thank you for taking the time to put together this amazing video diving into the world of Haunted PS1. The Frog-Worshipping Cult of Loveland Cove approves 🐸
Fantastic work! It really nails that ‘hair on the back of the neck standing’ eeriness that frogs croaking in the background normally shouldn’t be able to do

I don't care how disturbing it is, I'm just heart-warmed that in the end she has loving parents, who adore her.
Growing my Grandpa actually has some neat takes on how to get over someone being gone too, talking to an eldritch being beyond my understanding was actually very insightful
@@__bepis____bepis__308 I swear, no matter how the scary the tone, or how disturbing Nexpo shows it to be, I find it heartwarming.
I couldn't tell if you're talking about Grow my Grandpa or Mothered. both seem to have that same theme going on
Right her parents get taken over by a monster while the original is on the loose and will probably spread it's disease. How heartwarming.

The whiplash from hearing Nexpo's voice coming from a normal man to seeing said man speak in a normal voice is insane. I never knew you've been doing a voice this whole time.

no idea why no one is talking about it but WALK has got to be one of the most incredible horror games ive seen in a LONG time. its so simple, you dont know anything, all you know is to walk. the fixed perspective was nothing short of genius. id love to see more games utilize that.
Ikr feels like a nightmare, very abstract, doesn't make sense, terrifying monster
The poor little girl all alone at the mercy of that monster
@@TheReck12what? It’s not abstract at all. It’s literally a girl being chased by a monster/ghost.
WALK even has a secret ending. Apparently it sends morse code messages through your dual shock controller when the monster approaches you and the controller vibrates. You have to type the words it tells you and you get transported into a burning forest, where you have to reach the top of the tower and the monster chases you as a harpy and eventually kills you. Then it cuts back to the little girl walking. lol
No one lives under a lighthouse does a similar thing to WALK. It has a scene where you play from the perspective of the monster. It's about you showing up on an island with a lighthouse where the previous caretaker has disappeared, but something is not quite right. I highly recommend it.
Neko Yume: the clip of the cat launching into the sky followed by Nexpo’s deadpan “Hopeless.” has me on the floor
Meow 😂
You should make this a yearly Halloween special, showcasing all of that year's entries, starting with the goofy ones and ending with the terrifying ones
That would be a great idea!
I pretty sure he said we was going to do this in the video
Yes please
@@Zdeath one of the first things he said. 🤦♂️ but that person may be hard of hearing to be fair. 😉
Agreed
32:15 To anyone who's curious, this is a rare example of "second person" (not first person or third person) gameplay. Another example that I can think of that does this is a mission in Driver: San Francisco, where you see through the eyes of the person who's chasing you with a car, while you're controlling your own car through his POV. It's a really fascinating gameplay/storytelling concept.
It is rare as hell. I remember it was used in Psychonauts 1 in the lung fish bossfight
If I remember correctly, I believe it was also sorta used in either the hitman games, or the first Condemned game criminal origins. Where it sends you into the killers POV for a short bit.
Didn't battletoads on nes did the same thing for one boss fight?
My personal favourite instance of 2nd person gaming is in Legend of Zelda Phantom Hourglass, where one of the bosses turns invisible and while you have the standard top-down perspective on the bottom screen, the top screen has a 2nd person view of the boss coming after you
@@pageclayton6850 ooo which boss battle was this one
I don't remember if this was mentioned, but, if you own the full version of Mothered, the demo changes and turns into something of a sequel, which you ABSOLUTELY have to play if you liked what you see here. It's so so sooooo good.
Mothered makes me so angry. Imagine having your consciousness ripped from your body and placed into a machine, you are awake but cannot control what the machine body does. You are forced to helplessly watch your own mother, someone you loved more than anything in the world, treat you like garbage and feed you literal dirt. The few desperate times you are able to override the bot programming and cry out to her, she reacts with fear and hostility.
I know it's a prequel to the main game, and this is a semi-spoiler, but man I hope she got revenge on her parents in the end.
The funny thing about heartworm is that exposure therapy tends to not be the greatest idea for trauma, especially because exposure therapy aims to force you into the highest reaction you can experience and keep doing that until it no longer effects you for people with trauma it tends to causes people to shut down and possibly make everything just worse, pushing past the trust thermaclide and then you need a new therapist
I was recommended a similar solution to childhood trauma that I only remembered in my twenties, but I had no choice but to see that trauma in my minds eye for well over a year, nonstop, in ever6 waking moment
Over a long period of time combined with an extreme force of will, I put it back into Pandoras Box and learned to accept that it happened and that's all
@@SamuelBlack84 There are no such thing as repressed memories. Unfortunately, a lot of ignorant or unscrupulous therapists will run with a false or implanted memory, making it just as traumatic and damaging as a real memory. Equally unfortunate is the sheer amount of families that have been torn apart because of serious accusations stemming from such implanted false memories.
Whatever you "remembered" in your 20s likely didn't actually happen to you, but because of this dangerous kind of therapy, it affects you just as badly as if it did.
@WobblesandBean Regretfully, it did happen, and it wasn't an implanted memory because it emerged before I sought out a therapist
There are still blanks in my memory for many reasons and I'm content to let them stay that way
@@WobblesandBeantf are you on about "theres no such thing as repressed memories"
There absolutely is. I've had several memories of mine resurface and I've never even been to a therapist, so you cant claim they've been "implanted" either.
Its a documented psychological phenomenon, not something you can just fucking handwave away
@@WobblesandBeanyoure a huge pos for unreality baiting, congratulations buddy
I always thought Mothered was about surviving an abusive home- you don't see a mother you see a monster - to survive you become a robot that she can program - you have warning systems in place so that you don't make mother angry- and escaping can feel futile. It's honestly one of the saddest games- if you think of it that way.

Growing my grandpa is disturbingly beautiful, and despite how growing a loved one is completely unrealistic, the struggles that Adrienne goes through hits really close to home. I too had parents on the brink of divorce, constantly fighting, shortly after my grandma passed. Course I never turned to blood rituals and pulsating organisms in my basement but what Adrienne yearns for is exactly how I felt when I was in the same spot. Gives the horror of it all a much more personal feel.
I personally think it's about entering and clinging to abusive relationships. I can relate too though, I've gotten used to tuning them out when I can
@@laurelalloro its about a big monster in a basement
Filthbreed is the perfect short form horror game. Gives you just enough to make your mind wander, and never explains too much
I like how you can leave at any time lol
Something people may not realize, but the museum of the 2021 demo seems to be a callback to the fantastic 'namco museum' of the PS1. The little ghost guy in the corner has me 100% convinced that this is the case.
Man, for the second ending of Growing My Granpa, it's good to see an eldritch horror that actually cares for it's summoner happiness.

Mothered has stuck around in my mind since this video was uploaded. Earlier this year I woke up from a hit-and-run that I don't remember, I was brought home to stay with my family, my mother is a gaslighter at the best of times, but now I had a head trauma causing paranoia and PTSD. I was convinced there was some elaborate conspiracy going on. Can't believe there's a game that's essentially about the same thing. The second you said the words Loveland and frogs in the same sentence I already knew what was happening. I live about 45 minutes from there and the frog man is a classic local cryptid story. There's also a "haunted" castle in that area.
Oh damn I didn’t know it was based off reality
been to that castle, there's a skeleton jumpscare in the basement
Echostasis is scary because it feels like it’s exactly what’s happening with AI art now, it’s currently creating things that a human mind inputs (which is already making artists lose opportunities) but in the future it could get better and better, until the point where you couldn’t tell the difference between a human’s work, and an ai’s soulless mass-produced generation. A cerebral scan is starting to seem like plausible development in the future…
@@Neeilbowman I didn't say it was ai, just feels like whats happening with ai right now
@@dryelene you literally wrote "ai art" lol
@@pucktoad yeah it *felt* like that, I didn't say it *was* that
Honestly, the only way I could accept art made by an AI is if it's a truly SENTIENT AI.
When/if we hit that level of tech (presuming we don't piss them off to go Skynet-mode on us), *then* I'll consider it, since it'll at least be from something (or rather someone) that is making something out of their own creativity, and not some random tag or search result being fulfilled through an algorithm.
it’s depressing. instead of automating work to have more time for art, we’re automating art to have more time for work. if this is the world I’m going to grow up into I think I’ll pass tbh
What I truly love about all of these games is that none of them seem to rely on jumpscares to make them scary or unsettling. It's all about the aesthetics and the overall feelings of unease the games try to convey.
The plot twist at the end of Mothered truly made me gasp. That was one of the most mind blowing endings to a game I've ever seen, even if it was just a demo. Thank you so much for making this video and showing us all these amazing games, I can't wait for Gob and Echostasis ❤❤

I absolutely adore these types of games. They bring you in to a different world that gives me comfort but also fear. I've been playing so much of these games, especially the ones by Puppet combo. But, with these demos, Haunted PS1 2021 has a lot of really fun demos. I didn't know about the 2020 one and I still need to explore the 2022 one more. Really good video, Nexpo. I really loved this one.
I appreciate that Toby thank you! Man it was a blast playing through/dissecting these.
In a gaming world where everything triple A seems like it wants to replicate real life, I love when a game gets goofy or intentionally uses 'bad' graphics. These games probably wouldn't be as good as they are of they didn't have that low polygon aesthetic.
Ngl. Makes me miss when this was the norm.
I HATE horror. I'm not good with it. But for some reason, I watch channels like this one constantly.
Well done, Nexpo. You can take several different horror concepts, and make it viewable to those who would usually never be able to stand it.

Skill issue, get good 😈
Lol, same - I find that I love deconstructions and analysis of horror movies and games, and I enjoy reading and writing horror, but I'll cover my eyes in a scary movie. 😂
I think it's because in this case someone is essentially holding your hand through it.
Walk is so interesting to me, because it uses real photos from recent years. I recognize the political posters, the style of vending machines, etc. It feels like a walking simulator of my daily walk to work, but then suddenly is a horror game. It's so real and yet surreal. Such a unique horror experience.
Nexpo’s videos are so high quality that I wouldn’t be surprised if he started making a horror series of his own.

"D" was one of the first PS1 games I ever played. Something about the awkward unnatural voice acting and the slow movement made it feel surreal and creepy in a unique way. I probably wouldn't have the patience to play through it today, but back then those graphics blew my dang mind.
This the only time I've ever heard someone mention Shadow man. I loved that game! The combination of the atmosphere, voodoo imagery and lore, and jump scares produced a really unique haunting experience.
I love how Neko Yume and LSD Dream Emulator are liminal spaces but essentially from an early-internet/gaming-nostalgia perspective instead of IRL-nostalgia
I cannot WAIT for the deep dive into Echostasis and the other connecting games!!! Absolutely loved every second of this video.
Nexpo didn’t mention Enigma Machine, another game by Enigma Studios that directly ties into the lore and backstory of Echostasis. Alpha Beta Gamer has a play through of it and he actually covered most of these games in the past

The Museum aesthetic of the 2021 disc is very reminiscent of the Namco Museum games for the ps1 that had little exhibits like that for games like Pac-man or Dig-Dug or Galaga. I wish more games would use that gimmick as ive always loved it and found it pretty cozy.

The use of all the old Silent Hill sound effects brings me so much joy 💕
The game that starts at 14:15 reminds me exactly of my own afflictions, my experiences with traumatic amnesia due to childhood trauma, and what it's like trying to face the flashbacks from the trauma.
Is that how you got your name? 🤣
@@TheBestRoddy What are you going on about...?
1:02:48 the scariest part of that for me is when youre going straight to bed, the text says - you can not sleep when someone is in your room, or at least in the full game.
Man, how cool would it be if these were made to work on an actual PS1? Like, I know this is a PC thing made to look like PS1, but it'd be pretty dang neat if they came out with at least one of these that could be burned to a disc and played on a real PS1, or an emulator.
I wish they would've turned these demos into full games. Like WALK & Heartworm. I'd love to see a full version. There's one from forever ago that came with my original PS. The big Grey console. That game was wicked but I can't remember the name of it. Drives me crazy. I really enjoyed this video Nexpo! You did a great job as always.
Heartworm full version should be out by the end of this year on steam
Really? Omg thats awesome! Sorry for the late reply, I literally came back to watch this video and seen your reply to my comment. I appreciate your response. I hope they do finish the game soon. I can't wait to play it. @@AncientED5
no problem, unfortunately it looks like the release date has been changed to 2024 since though :(@@LeeLee1985Official
Honestly, I was kind of hoping that the twist to "Mothered" was that you had undergone delicate brain surgery and things seemed so weird because you were still recovering. And like, maybe you can just go along with it and eventually things go back to normal or you "fight" the "monsters" and maybe that's the sad ending where you realize that there were no monsters all along.
Nexpo is another reason I love halloween, he never misses Halloween. Thank you, you are incredible.
Cannot express enough how your content is one of the things I look forward to most! You can tell just how much thought and effort you put into everything you do, thankyou Ryan
The entire fact that you have Koudelka in your video...-sniffles- that was my favorite game...it was the first ps game I ever beat.
so glad yames is getting the recognition they deserve. i love their nightmarish lovecraftian horror and i hope more people will also appreciate their games aswell :)
@@Dont_click_this_profil3 do your parents love you
Yames is wonderful, probably my favorite horror dev.
around 1:07:40 in Mothered - that effect on the screen is an impressively accurate simulation of what happens when you point an analog closed-circuit camera at it's own output on a CRT screen. Now there's an obscure analog thing to hit the nail on the head of.
In _Walk,_ the computer holds a secret minigame where you are a man who finds and climbs a spiraling staircase of light away from hell, only to be taken by a crow and dropped back where he started.
There is nothing like the sound of the ps1 start up. So many good memories.
i feel like gob definitely takes inspiration from the neverhood, from the art style to the funky aesthetics, its SO cool!
Nexpo would have a field day with the Neverhood. I was so intrigued by that game as a child, but it creeped me out constantly even if it didn't intend to
@@McCloudDash91 oh no, The Neverhood creeped you out? I loved that game as a teenager. I never would have sold my copy had I known how limited they would be today apparently. It's more of a whimsical game, but the emptiness of the world I could see being unsettling for a kid. All that claymation was hella expensive, that's why there's not many characters. I don't know if you can find it, but they had a making of for that game and the set was absolutely bonkers. If you can, ::clears throat::, procure a copy it's worth playing through. It's a neat adventure game, from the time when they were all the rage. The Neverhood and the two Discworld games...those being back happy memories.
“Created with love by Nexpo”
“Watched with love from all of us!” Great video as usual. I wish there was enough time to make a 4 hour video on this. It was really just an overall fun topic. Can’t wait for the next one!
This was just so damn good. Each and every game gave me goosebumps the way you described it with such passion and suspense. I can see you absolutely love being immersed into these games which is so relatable that it leaves a smile on my face. Been a fan for months and your videos make my day. Cheers
I've been following your channel for the past two years and your videos never fail to be amazing man! I always save them for when I need to space in on making art because your video editing style is very immersive and calming in a way I haven't found in any other youtubers
This is why Nexpo is my #1 favorite RUclipsr. Never heard another human utter a word about Shadow Man, a game I grew up playing with my mom. Never heard anyone else say anything about the haunting, nostalgic feeling PS1 horror holds. Amazing upload I'm so grateful
Shadow Man is a criminally underrated gem, I'm sooo glad Nexpo aknowledged it
RagnarRox has a video on Shadow Man that you would probably enjoy.
@@tsarXadam thank you! I'll check it out
@@dwrbh906 YES, yes it is ❤️
I like the fulfilled contract ending. even though it is utterly terrifying with how whiskers outright rewrote the parents in the most disturbing way, Adrienne was left alone and given the best ending for her. Even if whiskers didn't care about her personally and only saw it as a contract, the fact that it didn't harm her in this ending and gave her what she truly wanted is heartwarming.
that ending is simple, trustworthy magic. you fulfill the deal and things go well and she gets her happy end. the other one could go literally any direction, she is host to something that is totally unknown.
WALK looks amazing. I seriously need to look into it. Thank you for the great demo playthrough 🙏
(will keep editing this until I'm done with the video
The last game mentioned has some similarities to a short film by David Lynch called The Grandmother. It has a plot where a boy who also has mean, bitter parents, plants some seed and grows a grandmother. I wonder if the game developers of Growing Grandpa took inspiration from that short film mentioned.
I have to say, the games by Enigma Studios blew me away. I love the soundtracks to them and I love the cryptic connections betwwen the two games. They were incredible!
Bro, the twist in mothered had me screeching
My partner did the soundtrack for Mothered and Echostasis and it makes me so happy to see people enjoying them
@@ladyhornwood2328 I'm a sucker for synthwave and more drone-y music. So kudos to your partner for sure! They definitely deserve all the praise!
I absolutely love the genre of horror that ends very sadly, and deeply, rather than the simpler type that is just plain scary and unsettling. I really want to see how Heartworm turns out - how the devs address childhood trauma. The demo was beautiful and sad - I loved it.
Its been you that's helped me live through loosing my mom and sister this past year. Of course being in a sad place puts my mindset in some dark places. You give me an outlet to express and soak that in rather than becoming cynical or toxic to those I love or internalizing it I get all of out watching your content. I don't know ya but I love ya. Hope all is well brotato chip. Thank you for your service. I miss my mom and my sister.
😢 that’s really tragic man. I hope you’re doing well and recovering.
didn't know how much i needed a segment of you talking about one of yames' games. they're always so bizarre and intriguing, they fit right in with your channel honestly.
A FILTH open-world game where the FILTH is starting to take over the city and you play as a detective on the force would be an amazing game.
Hello Mr. Nexpo, I'm writing to formally ask you to cover the Scarfolk series, which looks very interesting but in my opinion would be very enjoyable (perhaps even moreso) in a compiled and preanalyzed fashion as you tend to do. Thank you for considering this request!
Nexpo, you should definitely make more videos or even a series about the other games (and also more videos about your favorite ones), this video came out SO good, I wished the it never ended 🥲A short series about this has so much potential.
Thank you so much for this!
These videos are honestly some of the highest quality I have ever seen dude, every single thing you put out is nothing short of phenomenal.
6:53 That gave me goosebumps. A sound I will love for my whole life. A sound I grew up with. A sound that got me in to gaming.
Hey Nexpo, I know this will be lost in the thousands of comments, but your work means so much to me. I just finished Army Basic Training and being able to watch something familiar such as one of your videos is just one of the best things possible. Thank you for all you do, You inspire me as well as the rest of us.
I wish you luck.
How was it man? As rough as you thought it’d be?
@@jake53105 if you go in with a bad mental or mindset about it you will struggle. It's different for everyone but I'd say it was an "experience", for every bad moment I had, I had a good one, met some cool people, met some shitbags.

All the best to you in your career.
I just discovered your channel about 3 days ago, ended up on one of your videos because I was in an out of control spiral going from one obscure video to another, Crack That Tank a WWII military training video was the last thing I saw before one of your videos got recommended, I think it was your "The Darkest Lost Media Vol. 1" I honestly can't remember cause I've just spent the last 3 days watching your content and I just want to say, you are a master of your craft, your content as quality and the way you deliver is just amazingly done. Keep doing what you're doing because it's been an amazing ride so far and I look forward to your future uploads.
Honestly, theres nothing like curling up on the couch and vibing with these videos, the spooky ambience is almost comforting
