I did a report on this drug in HS, it was pretty obscure at the time (decades ago) so I was really excited about it. When I was done doing the report in front of class I looked up and I will never forget the look of fascination and excitement on so many faces and I knew right then that I had done something terrible. It still upsets that I might have led some fellow class mates to find a pretty horrible drug they would have known nothing about.

In my dumb youth I tried datura. The dry mouth is very real and the first thing you notice. This is manageable at first because you have your wits about you and can drink copious amounts of water. The next thing that goes is your vision. Your eyes turn into one big pupil. This means reading your phone is impossible and the ability to call for help a matter of luck. This is when you begin your lucid hallucinations which can be fun but are a 30 or so minutes of of a 12 hour experience. Your body temperature increases rapidly and you can’t sweat so your skin is beet red at this point you begin having your out of bodily experience. You literally feel like you are watching your self from above like GTA and I remember having thoughts like “weird, I guess I’m pat today” it wasn’t spiritual it was terrifying having the lack of self. Then you have your black in black out period where you only remember some of the night but the idea of where, who, what you are let alone that you are on drugs is gone. When your trip is over the events you do remember don’t go away. You believe them as a full blown memory. I was convinced I cheated on my current girlfriend with my ex and my friend confronted his math teacher because he was convinced “he solved the problems they learned in his 1:1 tutoring” that never occurred. As we both came to I could hear him yelling in the living room in my parents basement that he needed water. I some how found the door knob and crawled toward the kictchen. My parents had an open layout for the living room and kitchen with the only distinction being about 1 foot of wall extending out of the 8 foot entrance . When I grabbed us water and tried to bring some to my friend I couldn’t find the end of that one foot extension and or lights or anything of use. I started punching the wall to break through and luckily he found me before I did more damage or hit a wire. About 4 hours later 16 hrs in. We found the light switch. We both had heavy fevers and chalk white mouths from severe dehydration. My vision took over a week to come back to 100% and like I said our visions were 100% true to us for a long time. This is not something anyone should try. You are walking a tight rope of life and death this isn’t a psychedelic and shouldn’t be treated as one it’s a deliriant and even if you don’t of there are so many ways it can kill you. Stay away. All out of love I promise

If you go out of your way to find, obtain, and prepare them, and even go on freakin' r/drugs to ask if you should take them and they overwhelmingly say "HELL NAH!" and proceed to take them anyway, then, as Batman's archnemesis once said, "You get what you f***ing deserve!" Once, I tried suicide with a plant from the same family of Datura's, I almost died, I drank the tea of just only one flower. I stopped salivating 10 minutes after drinking the liquid, I was having dinner with my mom, so I stopped because the food turned bitter and the saliva would not be there to help me chew the food. 15 minutes after drinking, I felt like I was very drunk by alcohol, I stood up and felt very dizzy and sleepy, so I went to bed. After one hour, I wake up and that's the part I remember nothing until I woke up in hospital with needles in my arm.
My brother told me, when I woke up, I tried to walk but could not stand up, my legs were not functioning, and I was talking non sense. He saw I was completely out of my mind, so he called my mom, she knew what I did, she was very suspicious about the tea, and my family grabbed me by my arms and legs to take me to the car and get to the hospital.
    I kept talking nonsense.
While there, I had arrhythmia, my heart bpm was around 200, and it was never above 80bpm while I normally was relaxed.
My mom told me I would not talk whenever the doctor asked me anything, I kept my mouth shut, but she said I spoke another languages once in a while (I can talk four different languages and also know a little bit of more three). So it was very difficult to communicate with me because I did not want to speak Portuguese.
They gave me diazepam twice in the veins, it eventually worked, and I fell asleep.
I woke up trying to get to the bathroom to pee at all cost, they would not let me, so I peed in my pants very suddenly, the urge was too much.
When I woke up again, I would see my boyfriend in the place of my mother staring at me, the image would flicker all of sudden, and I did not know if it was him or my mom, so I got very scared.
When the effects were vanishing, I would see the light in the ceiling expand and contract, I would still not talk well.
Eventually, I regained conscience and my mom told me sadly what happened.
I learned a huge lesson, I almost died, there was nothing that could be done to clean the toxin except syrum in the veins...
Do not mess with the Solanaceae plant family! It was not even Datura!

I like to think that Flip made it through the trip, given he lasted 12 hours and ended up on another subreddit and kind of had a sense at where he was/what he was watching. His Google comment was made thinking he was on Google on the white homepage in a search bar, but the last one seemed like he knew where he was, even if he couldn't comprehend he was seeing two low-res mammoths fighting. He thought they were dogs, but overall seemed to acknowledge them fighting, so I guess he had come down enough to see that?
But overall I like to think in 12 hours someone came home and got to help him, and during the trip he probably forgot his password or forgot his throwaway account entirely, or he forgot just the pass and doesn't want to make another alt just to tell everyone he's okay, and not revisit where he made one of the biggest mistakes of his life.

Jokes apart, I actually have two points:
      1) After getting high, if he could remember that Reddit is an application, then why couldn't he remember Google, which is way more common in our life?
(I mean why did he just not go to Google instead of Reddit considering that he remembered the correct spelling of Google and correct domain name?)
      2) If he was so high, how did he not misspell any word? (He must've been pretty high to forget that Google is an app and hence wouldn't have had good control over his muscles, remember that his words were random but correctly spelt)

Had I not tripped hundreds of times on various "mainstream" psychedelics, I feel like I would definitely not have "survived" that experience. It was so intense I had to quickly put myself in "safemode", favorite blanket most comfy pillow and hurrying to put on The Office (my comfort show", and tried to be as comfortable and calm as possible. I even wrote myself a note saying "you took datura of your own will, everything will be okay". I took 20 seeds ground up in water sat overnight and then sieved out. I had the same euphoric and dysphoric experience at first which then turned into complete dysphoria. It took me about 2 minutes standing in front of the toilet trying to urinate and my skin puffed up really red and puffy throughout the experience. The headspace was NOT psychedelic, very confusing, and not something I'd recommend even for experienced Psychonauts. Especially if you've never been in a situation where you are tripping very hard but your brain can't remember that you even took a substance so you start to separate from your identity (AKA: delirium) leading to potentially really really bad choices you don't even know you're making. STAY AWAY from Datura no matter what you've tried, how potent, or how often you've tripped its not going to feel like any tryptamine, phenethylamine, or any other deliriant like Ketamine for that matter. It's a different beast. Even with proper harm reduction practices just stay away. Please.

Before I was born my mother and father purchased an old farmhouse in a rural area. My dad was clearing the overgrown acreage, using a bush hog (basically a HUGE ass lawnmower) and, unbeknownst to him, much of this overgrowth contained Jimson Weed (related to datura). It’s an invasive species here.
Just from (basically) mowing it and coming into contact with it he was messed up for two to three days. He’s a “mans man” so he didn’t seek medical attention, just rode out the trip (having previous experience with psychedelics).
Can’t imagine what this poor soul went through with that kinda dosage.
Pop said he knew something was up when he looked at himself in the mirror and saw how dilated his pupils were. He said he felt super dehydrated no matter how much water he consumed. “It wasn’t a pleasant experience for either of us” mom says.

it's stuff like this that makes for excellent anti-drug campaigns. I'm pro-gentle parenting, but I think there's a big problem of anti-drug campaigns watering down the truth and shining a spotlight on the most unimportant details. I don't think once in my years of dare or anti drug assemblies have I ever heard anyone talk about bad trips and the trauma it can cause. but it's the terrifying shit like this that people need to see, this is the horrible reality of what taking powerful drugs can be like, and sometimes we DO need to scare our kids. I think stories like this should be included in anti drug campaigns, bc even though it's incredibly upsetting, it effectively communicates what a bad trip can be like.
it's scary but it's real, and I think that's the important truth. also, I'm not totally against drug use, but I am pro-educating on proper drug use, and I think specific drugs like Datura shouldn't be taken and that people shouldn't even entertain the idea of trying it.

The problem with a lot of anti drug ideology is it doesn’t really work well. The more strictly enforced drugs are the more people who abuse them and end up dying. If anything this is a good example of why it doesn’t work because the amount of people with direct experience telling him not to try datura and he disregarded all of it. Studies in many countries show that drug use actually drastically decreases when they’re all legalized as ironic as that may sound and is conversely the reason why America has a gigantic problem with opioid abuse and marijuana usage since the infamous war on drugs

anti-drug fearmongering has a history of ruining lives by restricting people's personal freedoms to take whatever drugs they wish to take. You're out here shamelessly promoting the idea that "we need to scare people away from drugs". How dishonest and authoritarian of you. You think you know what's best for me buddy? Keep your opinions to yourself. Don't try to manipulate little children by scaring them. Anti-drug propoganda has been a thorn in the side of this country for ages now. The media like the attention, so they drum up fear around some drug every year, once a year. Heard of the recent "fentanyl disguised as halloween candy" scare? It was revealed to be totally fake lol. People like you wanted to scare us with lies about fentanyl. Being afraid of datura makes zero sense. We need to do the opposite. We need to study its effects and observe them objectively. People with an obvious insidious agenda like yourself need to be kept miles away from such studies. Then i'll trust the experts' findings, as long as people like you aren't remotely involved.

In my country Nepal, Datura is offered to lord Shiva on the day of shivratri (Hindu festival). Mind you lord Shiva is know as the lord of destruction. Datura is said to have grown from the chest of lord Shiva after he had consumed poison in an event in the religious texts (puran) so it already has a pretty hardcore reputation in my culture. Worshippers offer datura to lord Shiva on that day. My mom, dad and grandparents have told me stories of people who consumed it and have either died or have never regained sanity after consumption. Nepal used to be the hippie centre of the world back in the 60s/70s before consumption of such stuff was banned. The word datura is also originated from Sanskrit. There is a temple called Pashupatinath which is considered the most important temple for hindus which here in Kathmandu, Nepal. Pashupatinath is temple of lord Shiva. Temples usually distribute bhang (edible cannabis) boiled with milk or mixed in sweets during shivratri to pilgrims and worshippers. It's completely legal to consume marijuana/ cannabis on shivratri in pashupatinath for everyone. All the sages that come from all over the world are high as a kite that day and will even offer you some to smoke. HI! I made the mistake of ingesting datura as a teenager, and though it was only one time (don't really know anyone who has ever intentionally taken datura more than once), I can tell you right now: this post is fake. One of the immediate side effects of datura is your pupils dilating to the brink. Legit, no color whatsoever is left in your eye. This makes viewing any sort of backlit device like a computer screen, phone screen, television screen, even digital clock almost impossible. The fact this guy got on reddit to type two separate posts is absolutely unbelievable. The google post, and the "big dog" comment are absolutely contrived. On top of massive pupil dilation, you also get an effect known as "eye jitters" which happens when you t5ry to focus your eye on any one thing in particular. The second you look at any texts, images etc, your eyes will begin to almost vibrate back and forth. Posting is, for lack of a better word, impossible.
This story is interesting, but definitely a work of fiction.

I've looked up similar stuff, it's unfortunately hard to find anything that isn't tied to a criminal case. Individuals die from drugs every day and it's rare anyone gets a story. If there's an obituary for the OP, it'd be damn near impossible to match up because those don't usually say much about cause of death, especially if it were an accident or tragedy.

First time I found out about this stuff, I had a neighbour over and mid conversation he noticed a tree in my garden, the one with the pink trumpets and was like "you need to get rid of that tree".
He told me about this time he visited Cape Town (we're from South Africa btw) and was given this tea made from the leaves of the same type tree in my garden.
I cant remember if he was tricked into it or if the effects of it were misrepresented but he said he'd have never taken it had he known what a fcked up time he was in for.
He said he was talking to people that werent there, smoking cigarettes that werent there among other hallucinations and apparently went on to experience this delerium for 6 months. He said that the experience gave him PTSD and changed him for life.
I did think he was maybe lying. I mean 6 months?? I'd never heard of anything so powerful thats allowed to just grow in peoples yards. But then about a year later I came across this very thread through another thread on Reddit and reading others experiences, I realised he was not bullshitting. And now I've decided to watch this video.
Interesting side note, I noticed specifically lighting and smoking a cigarette thats not there and even feeling the feel of a cigarette as if it were real is actually a very common thing people seem to experience.

I assure y'all, it's not a good trip, it's something that I would never do again and that I will always try to discourage some to try it. It's a scary, powerful trip, I actually don't remember that much, but I do remember being walking in fear around a scary place, something that later my friend said it was impossible since we mostly have been seating in the sofa kinda like a zombie. I imagine a more powerful dose wouldn't actually do damage to a person, but his/her actions under the influence for sure could be dangerous. Don't try it, it's not worth it. Some years ago in the late summer, we noticed that one of our geese was acting very peculiar. He seemed completely out of it and was stumbling around like a drunk and bumping into stuff. Fearing some horrible neurological condition, my husband took him to the emergency vet while I checked out the geese's enclosure to see if I could find any clues as to the origin of his condition.
And I did. During the monsoon season, datura grows all over our property. We keep the geese's enclosure free of it, but hadn't noticed one plant just outside the fence in a far corner. A couple of its leaves were sticking through the fence, and they had beak marks all over them.
Dude was high as a kite. It was about four days before he was normal enough to eat and function on his own again. Since then, we inspect the fence a lot more carefully, as we would rather not have to tube-feed a hallucinating goose ever again.

I think the biggest mistake here was telling them not to do it. When I was younger I tried datura a few times. Once I heard about it I was set on doing it, and that's just how it is. The best thing they could've done was given him safety tips. His idea to make a tea AND smoke it should've been a big red flag that they were unexperienced. I truly believe that if someone experienced were there and had discussed the drug further with them rather than making them avoid using, the op would've been fine

Regardless, most of us knew better than to take that crap. Anyhow, I had two friends that took some at a rave after consuming Molly. Neither of them were ever the same again. Both were permanently lost. I still see one of them wandering the streets and that was over 30 years ago.
