I just wanted to point out (for those unaware) is that the thinking/reason for an electronic button for the glove box is that when you put your car in "Valet Mode" for valet parking, it prevents valets from rifling through your glove box. I have a 2016 Cadillac ELR (which also does not have a manual button for the globe box). When you put the car in "Valet Mode", it also locks out certain functions of the infotainment as well as the glove box. It also keeps you from opening the trunk.
Here's an idea. We could put a revolutionary new technology on glove boxes called a lock, which when used can only be opened with something called a key. Oh wait. I just find is silly that their idea of safety and privacy for the 10% of the time it'll be used by a valet, is to also make things more difficult for the owner 90% of the time. There's an easier way. Everything doesn't have to be shoved into the infotainment system. The concept of valet keys already exist. Just program the valet key to be able to only start the car and have limited functionality. Just like the doors are radio controlled and unlocked by the presence of the car key, so can the glove box. Problem solved.

Why do we need to use a touch screen to open the glovebox? What was such a big issue with a handle? Why do car manufacturers insist on making every single thing go through a touch screen that is bound to fail rather than sticking with things that didn't need changing? What if you get into an incident and the car cannot function and need to get into the glovebox?
Imagine you get pulled over by a cop and you have to explain to him you can't show him your license because the glovebox opening software is glitching 💀

A heritage Easter egg. The disguised button popper to open the access door for the plug-in links back to the fuel filler hidden behind the left tail light in 40s & 50s Cadillacs. A little round reflector was actually the button you pushed and the whole tail light would spring up, exposing the gas cap. Weird but really cool and one of the things that made caddys so special.

Living in a heavy snow-belt city in Ohio, I can confidently say that the electric door "popper" would not last ONE heavy winter here before it's driver is stranded in the cold.
The sales they gain by selling to Californians who think that feature is cool heavily outweigh the very few sales they're losing in Ohio. I'm sorry to say but manufacturers don't care about any state outside of Cali, Oregon, Washington and Texas when it comes to EVs. They lose 90% of their range in the cold weather anyways, I doubt door poppers are your main problem. That being said, I agree they're dumb. Tech for the sake of tech is never good for overall design, and I hope this trend doesn't trickle down to cars that aren't flashy flagships
Well, maybe. Maybe it's strong enough to overcome the ice and break the door open. That could be an advantage if it works. Not holding my breath though...
i've been seeing these drive around Metro-Detroit with manufacture's plates for the past few months, so naturally i was excited to see the quirks & features of the Lyriq. i've finally caught up with Doug's videos !
Saw one in the wild in downtown Brighton. Still not sure what to think about the looks. All that "light show" on the front is just a bunch of non-functional tech.
Had a chance to drive a pre-production model, quite an impressive modern vehicle from Cadillac/GM. The Super Cruise feature may have been disabled as the Lyriq here is a Manufacture car.
Same here, Zach. After placing an order for one back in June, I was thrilled with my extended drive this past October. The Lyriq is everything you would expect from Cadillac/GM. And, yes, the Super Cruise is expected to be activated via an over-the-air update at some point. Can't wait for mine to be delivered!
I usually put the charging cables in the front trunk of any ev I have driven so far. Then it does not steal space in the back, when I load my luggage as these are mostly airport rentals. I think it is very convenient, as there is always easy and direct access to the cables.
The interior is very nice for the price. But the exterior doesn't work for me. It's an electric car, Cadillac! You have all the freedom to design a beautiful body and THIS is what you choose?
Exactly. Using a touch screen to open your glove box is a major improvement which is long overdue. I'm not sure how I survived this long with having to use an analog latch instead of a digital, wired system to open my glove box!
I’m a etron owner. If the lyriq was available last year I may have bought it - coming in 7-10k cheaper with 50% more range is a hell of a deal and super cruise is pretty cool. But it looks like the etron build quality is a little higher, charges just as fast, faster and w/all wheel drive standard, and heated rear seats. Its also a little more conventional looking. It’s a real toss up if you don’t need the extra range and I don’t regret going with audi.

A thought popped in my head about the screen operated glove boxes increasingly being seen in more and more vehicles these days. As per my theory, it might be a substitute for the lockable glove box back in the days when keys used to be a thing. Now with more and more cars going keyless, more manufacturers are integrating glove box openers in the screens so they can't be accessed without the key in the car. Just a way to integrate lockable storage inside the car without the use of keys. P.s. either I just figured out a mystery or might be too late to realise this.
The door handle perfectly condenses this car problems. You can improve the wheel but you can't reinvent it. And I understand that coming out with new ideas for cars is extremely difficult since we have had 20 new cars a year per market for the last 40 years and even the least enthusiast has some sort of like for the novelty but sometimes it's very obvious where they've gone too far
The only way this handle makes sense is if the door fully opened electrically (like the automatic door close feature in Rolls Royces). But this is just a dumb design for the sake of novelty.
Wait till it gets cold & the door freezes shut, not tightly, a slight tug would open it, but there's nothing you can grab, to tug. You'd have to open the front door that does have a pull handle then climb in back seat & push the door open. & Anyone that has scraped frost off their windshield in the morning knows exactly what I'm talking about.
People complaining incessantly about non-issues condenses the problem with society. Push a button and open the door. My God! It's soooo much more complicated can pulling a handle! And GM couldn't have possibly thought about testing in different climes and so it's doomed to failure if it gets cold. I swear, people need to listen to themselves, sometimes.
I'm convinced this car starts the transition in the automotive industry where concept cars actually become reality, and don't get watered down to the point where they aren't cool anymore in the production car.
What makes this car cool, precisely? It has garbage range, garbage charge times, stupid door handles, tech features that will undoubtedly go haywire in 5 years but OOOH 19 speakers! Too bad my 2010 Genesis has 21 speakers. Oh and it’s not even fast. What does this car offer that’s *better?* I see zero improvements here.
Going ELECTRIC is the DEATH KNELL for Cadillac. And these gaudy new Caddy SUVs will follow in the footsteps of XT5s and XT4s which are in great abundance on so many used car lots.
The AWD version of this is going to be a hit, especially at this price point. The competitors in this price point are the Mercedes EQB and the Volvo XC40/C40, and those are nowhere near as nice as this. This seems to be punching way above its weight.
Tesla is still killing them, Cadillac is a dying brand. Less range, less power, less speed, inferior tech, and the worst battery on the market. You can’t just slap a label ultium on GM attempt at a battery and expect people to buy it. Tesla Y is in the top 5 bought cars in the world.

@@intunewithdainfinte4781 complicated compared to a normal door handle. But besides that and the stupid glove box thing, this is a massive hit from Cadillac
I'm one of those people that is more interested in having something normal and familiar but electric and this is coming from someone who's also very technology centric as well. I just feel that with EVs in particular, there's been too much focus on putting technology where it doesn't need to be. A good example of that is an electronic opener for the glovebox. That's just a solution looking for a problem and there's a lot of that going on with cars today. I'm more of a fan of something like the Mercedes EQB. It's an electric GLB and it's not trying too hard. It's just normal but electric.
To offer some more context, I currently have a Kia Soul EV. There's virtually nothing different between it and a gas powered Soul. It's got normal climate knobs and turn signal and wiper stocks, it's just normal and easy to use but it's electric.
I actually got a miniature model of this car in the mail today. I bought it from a seller in China and it is super rare. It even came in a cool black box with the Cadillac name and logo.
@@markm0000 Perhaps, but Toyota doesn't have a history of vertical taillights that spans decades. They've been an integral part of Cadillacs design language over the years and it's refreshing to see them return in a brand new EV.

Supercruise is not yet available in the Lyriq (actually, most Lyriq's are not yet available either). They have said it will be pushed out in an OTA update later on (most likely 2023). No clue as to what the holdup is though.
The only auto manufacturers that say people don't use the front trunk are those without front trunks. I use mine all the time. I wonder if they have figured out people don't use front trunks on their cars because they don't have front trunks?
Why would anyone want to turn opening the door into a two-step process? They couldn't just integrate the button into the pull handle on the front? Simply mind-boggling.
I wonder how those doors would operate in a Canadian winter. My f150 used to freeze up all the time, even after the warranty and tsb’s were performed to fix it.
Very very impressive interior. The external design may not be for many but its futuristic. The charging cover will break within the first year as will one of those door opening plastic pushers.
It’s not perfect with the door handle, etc perhaps, but I was lucky enough to test drive one. Videos don’t go it justice in terms of the look - it’s a beautiful vehicle and the driving experience is top notch.

I love Cadillac's new design language. I never liked them in the past because I could see all of the regular GM in it. Ever since the new Escalade, I feel like it's actuality a different car. I know it's not, but they went the extra mile. New ones feel special over a regular Chevy.
Dr Skillz : so were the tesla door handles and yet they froze a lot here in Canada. Sometimes , specs do not reflect reality... could you believe? :o 🤣
The fact that everyone vaguely into cars hates this thing means it'll probably sell like hotcakes because the average buyer is a moron whod probably get really excited about a less useful door handle.
I viewed this vehicle at a dealership event and two initial turn-offs were the door handles and the center control knock/ring thing. I only opened the doors a few times and had it not work properly every time. The center control knob felt very loose and did not inspire confidence in the build quality. There are things to like about this vehicle, but coming from a chevy Bolt which I really like but traded out of because of interior quality issues, I'll wait to see how these GM products hold up after a few years.
As a Chevy Bolt EUV owner I find the Caddy very interesting. I'm happy with my Chevy and really would never need a more extravagant vehicle. This is the first Caddy that intrigues me, just because of the tech.
As a Bolt EUV owner it makes me happier to have the EUV after seeing the next generation of EV's coming out. Overly complicated for no reason and options becoming more subscription-based. No thanks.

We've fixed that with this design, but we still need to make something overly complicated...any suggestions? New, nerdy, overenthusiastic tech: I've got it. Just hear me out. We'll put the glove box opener in the infotainment screen!! GM Exec: I like the way you think. You just earned a key to the executive washroom...
My Elantra - in winter I have to turn off a lot of the auto steer measures as the lines of the road - if any are left are to be ignored as - you might have 2 or 3 lanes in summer but as winter goes along you end up with 1 or 2 .. often driving on the lines, if you let the car drive it would be trying to drive you into a snow drift or right into someone beside you. On a good note, it is "kind of nice" once the roads are repaired (not endless dodging literally holes and objects) and lines are painted for the most part - you get reminded how nice those are.
Despite the quality of this vehicle, I feel like its a hard sell. The primary elder buyer base of cadillac is slow to adopt electric car tech, and are scared away by complicated infotainment systems. Cadillacs younger wealthy audience is more interested in cars like the ct4/5 v as well as the escalade. Its entering a segment dominated by brands that have been trendier and also established in the EV market. Hopefully it does well because I feel like cadillac is a brand that can be successful it just needs to gain some market share.
I couldn't disagree more. Over the past couple of years it seems like every retiree in my neighborhood has gone out and gotten themselves a Tesla. These people drive no more than a couple thousand miles a year, and gladly traded their Caddies, Buicks and Lexus(es?) for a modern EV design. Why? Who knows. But that's what happened.

That is kind of cool. Not sure how practical the exterior door handles are, but the interior is hard to fault.
This is where I feel the inspiration was from. Cadillac has a long of heritage and this is nice to see they haven't forgotten about even in a futuristic EV product.
The interior door handles seem very reminiscent of the late 60's DeVille ones! I very much love that.
It seems Cadillac obviously made the Lyric with Doug Demuro in mind, with its unique and peculiar features which are quirks that delights Doug to no end. There is a high performance Lyric coming, cant wait for Doug to review that one.

Imagine you get pulled over by a cop and you have to explain to him you can't show him your license because the glovebox opening software is glitching 💀
cheaper to put it in software then make a handle 100x times. thats why everything is in screens its much cheaper for them
It can be integrated into lockouts when you put the car in valet mode etc...
The flat door handles make the car more aerodynamic, better range.

They never really went away. The Miata has had them as an option since it launched. Same with a lot of convertibles.

Even Lexus has also done that with their NX, so I'm also worried with those.
Well, maybe. Maybe it's strong enough to overcome the ice and break the door open. That could be an advantage if it works. Not holding my breath though...

That’s a good point actually. Now it makes sense.

That... ...is actually a good point. Didn't think of that.

@@RotchildFrancoisJr Imagine having TWO steps for something that we've mastered in ONE movement since the first car was launched

No, leave the wheel alone too. Thanks Tesla.

Going ELECTRIC is the DEATH KNELL for Cadillac. And these gaudy new Caddy SUVs will follow in the footsteps of XT5s and XT4s which are in great abundance on so many used car lots.

Looks like BMW and Cadillac designers are sharing notes. Equally appalling designs lately!
Still, fantastic video Doug!

Also, Cadillac damaged its reputation by selling that weird plug-in hybrid whose name I forgot now (Doug reviewed it)
Needs a big V8
they’ve sold out on this car

I couldn't disagree more. Over the past couple of years it seems like every retiree in my neighborhood has gone out and gotten themselves a Tesla. These people drive no more than a couple thousand miles a year, and gladly traded their Caddies, Buicks and Lexus(es?) for a modern EV design. Why? Who knows. But that's what happened.
Kinda insane i just got a 2022 almost fully loaded for the price of the standard model of this suv and this is leaps and bpunds more fancy than what i just got. Gm is stepping up with the pretty factor without tripling price good for them, always a caddy fan
