I dove for a couple years, and the deepest we ever went was about 70 ft in Lake Michigan on a wreck dive. Surprisingly good visibility (about 60 ft or so) but it was SO COLD, about 48F on the bottom. You could actually see the thermocline as you passed thru it at about 20 ft.. The day we did the dive it reached 104F in Chicago. I was so cold it took me the rest of the day to warm up. This dive creeps me out just watching.
Great video. Glad you posted your dive plan. I am TDI Advanced Trimix and would love to do a deep dive like this in warm water. The last deep dive I did was on a wreck called The Kamloops off Isle Royale in Lake Superior. We did the dives in July and the water temp was 36 degrees top to bottom with no thermocline. The wreck is in 270 ft and lots of amazing stuff to see. I have been to Cozumel 3 times in the last 6 months and had a blast diving.
What do you see at that depth? I'm thinking it's more the challenge of a six tank techical dive. That's fine if that's what your after. Just looking for the truth for this type of dive.
We've just filmed a long natural sight and sound gopro walk through the town and beach but we didn't get to see Cozumel underwater, so We enjoyed watching your underwater footage very much and love the fact that as you say nothing much happens) very restful. Thank you for sharing it.
Nice dive guys. Congrats. I like Tech Diving too. My training limit now is 200 feet. Normoxic Trimix Diver. On the future my plan is to go Full Trimix Diver. I hope soon. Regards from Brazil. Cheers.
the gauges don't work for this kind of diving. these things tell us a lot more than the gauges do. We plan for over an hour for each dive not including the equipment prep and mixing gases. A friend said that someone could dive just the gauge and it should work. As far as plastic time cards go, we have plastic paper in our wetsuit sleeves that is used on the way up. Shows each stop; depth, time and gas mix we should be on.
I enjoyed the vid, thanks! I find it amazing how some people post crap comments on here? Must be more closed minded people out there than I thought. May your dives be great and all return safely.
Scuba is a funny sport, it takes almost no physical ability and it's not at all physically demanding. I don't even think it should be called a sport but never the less it attracts self appointed experts and keyboard bad-asses for anyone that can swim and breath. You don't even have to be a good swimmer so that leaves the only thing you have to do well is breath. Most people got that down by the age of one. Other than that a moderate amount of knowledge and the ability to follow a dive plan without excuses. It's such a low physical skilled activity they want to make it bigger and more difficult than it really is. If you can follow rules and breath and can kind-of swim, a little more than a descent dog paddle will do, you have all it takes to be a great scuba diver. They see an easy hill to take so they take it and claim superiority, the beta male formula. Interestingly enough I haven't seen any beta males at 400 feet yet nor have I seen any an hour from the entrance in a cave underwater. Those are the Non-Beta Zones.
I was ready to talk shit about going that deep to see nothing then I change my mind when I read the description and see how we’ll explained everything was even the gases 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
that's really cool. Went diving in Cozumel a few times a year all through high school and a little bit afterwards. I've always wondered what things would look like if you dropped over the wall and kept going down.
they are all different. Some of the walls just keep going as far as I can see and I keep going deeper. We missed where we wanted to go on this dive so we ended up on a dead part but some of the walls are full of coral life and fish life all the way as far as I can see. It's amazing.
Very cool Very technical dive. I'm surprised that everyone's gear is not setup to be streamlined. Would make for a much easier dive. You could tell just buy watching the lead guy, kick and kick and kick some more.
Our END (equivalent narcotic depth) is about 119ft, meaning we only experience what anyone would feel at 119ft. We do that by lowering the percentage of nitrogen in the gas(tanks). in other words we're not narced, although I continually petition the team for a END depth of 130 or 140 so I can have a little more fun. This was taken from the Plan, so at 400 we had an END of 119 and at 240 we had an END of 117. That's as narced as we got, not at all. Level 400ft 3:56 (10) Trimix 10/65 1.31 ppO2, 104ft ead, 119ft end Level 240ft 1:00 (19) Trimix 18/45 1.49 ppO2, 95ft ead, 117ft end
A every depth it looks like it's about to get darker but if you keep descending into the darkness it seems to get lighter, or my eyes get used to it. IDK.
This was so relaxing to watch! Was neat to see the light changing, and when the camera was showing the watery ceiling :) It looks like you guys had fun! How did the pressure feel?
You can't tell any difference but the deeper you go the faster you go deeper. The effect is that the bottom sucks you down to it, so add air to your bc often or you'll blow past your planned depth.
when people wear gloves in CZM it makes me wonder why, please don't touch the coral. It's not too cold, most tech guys wear hoods because breathing helium in the mix makes you cold.
Super interesting video for those who are interested in technical diving. I have two questions: What is your SAC rate and how much did you consume of your 125 cu ft Trimix 10/65 during this dive, specifically at 200+ ft? I assume you had doubles of the 10/65? How thick was your suit? Is neoprene useless at 400ft?
It's best to be comfortable in the water, you'll get that just takes time in the water. Also what's going to happen will happen whether you're panicking or calm about it so chill.
Can you describe any physical changes you felt or noticed after the dive. ie..Narcosis type stuff? Awesome feat. Great job. Glad you are safe at the surface.
Besides feeling a little lucky when you get back to the surface, there were no changes, unfortunately our equivalent narcotic depth is 80ft or so, there's no getting narked. You'd be better off on air going to 150 if you want a good buzz. There are things to take note of, the deeper you go the faster you descend. So once you're deeper than 250 you might want to get a hold of your auto inflator and start putting air in your wing or you'll fly past your planned depth.
That actually isn’t true, the greatest pressure change is in the first 30 feet, the deeper you go, the less your wing compresses per foot, so if you are neutral and descend, you will be less negative then if you do the same thing at 10 feet. The difference, it takes you longer to notice those changes, and it creeps up on you more, so I agree that you should stay on top of it the deeper you go.
grab your nose and exhale hard when you feel the first bit of pain, you'll hear and feel them clear. Got to do it a lot until about 60 ft then not so much.
got my advanced scuba last year and want to follow your route, i read on one of your messages that the max is 330', ive seen others go 500' how is this possible?
no real max has been identified yet as far as the human body goes. with different gasses and different strategies deeper is still available to those who have the wonder, desire and means. different organizations have different certification numbers for liability sake and training sake, different certifications have different maxes, 330 is TDIs max depth. That's all they'll certify you to go. Certification has nothing to do with what's capable, it has to do with what you're trained to do, any deeper and you're not trained to do it but that doesn't stop most, I swim and I haven't been certified to swim. If you have the formulas and the balls then you can go as deep as you like and remain somewhat safe, relatively speaking. You can take precautions to be safer. At these depths you have to pick strategies and theories to do the math that you're betting you life on, you can no longer rely on concrete answers. You're at the edge of knowledge as well and it's forming around your dive. If you don't make it your data will be recorded, analyzed and aid in substantiating one theory over another or in the formation of a new theory. There are people who do 400 on single tank of air. Ask how's that's possible with regards to nitrogen and volume... I can't make their dives work on any formula. I also don't recommend doing them.
Dane, it doesn't feel very different at 400 than at 100. A major consideration is volume or consumption per breath or commonly understood as per minute. At 400ft you use 11 times the volume as at the surface and you don't want to run out of air. Also offloading the nitrogen by ascending slowly which is covered pretty well in basic courses. With Trimix you can change a lot of the parameters; if we go lean on Nitrogen then we can lower our equivalent narc depth, which we max out at 70ft, so we're not all narced out. We can go rich on 02 when we are off-loading (coming up) so we bleed the nitrogen out faster. We can also push the toxic levels of the gases further away by leaning them out. The difference between dives to 100 and 400 could be summed up in deeper dives have a lot of planning, math, calculations and discussions about them amongst the team. I like to fill my own tanks too and I'll use 6 on one dive. Dives to 100 you may spend a two minutes discussing it then jump in breathing whatever's in the tank Jose gave you.
The software will do it quickly but then you have to get three people who are betting a lot to agree on the deco stops. That means going back through and adjusting the stops. There's a link to the plan on one of the comments. It takes longer to fill the tanks with the right mixes, label and load them.
Forgive the potentially dumb question but, how do you dive a 10/60 mix on open circuit from the surface? Wouldn't you go unconscious at shallow depths?
You would start out using one of your breathable gasses as a "travel mix" until you get to a breathable depth of your back gas. (I am a Certified Trimix Diver). The 11% is breathable at 10meters.
What's the point of this dive? If for training, ok, but otherwise, it looks like there's not much to see at 400 feet in Coz (at least at this site) relative to what's available on scores of reefs at rec depths.
on this dive everything was dead but on some deep dives there's a lot of life and untouched life. some wall dives just keep going with life as far as you can see although the color disappears
I would say the point of the dive is the dive itself, the thrill of going deep and executing a well made dive plan perfectly. At least, that's what I enjoy about tech diving
@@davidkey6145 well we all like different things, however from speaking to other tech divers it seems that a common fascination with tech diving is wanting to see how far you can take it (safely of course)
Just started my scuba hobby for retirement. Very cool video but I gotta say that is a lot of cost and effort for very little to look at. Still cool though.
we are always hunting Lion Fish. A few years ago they were everywhere. I think the hunters are making a huge impact. We really didn't see many this year or last year.
id love to know what you do too. how deep can you go? The idea of NOT having something to breath makes me want to breath. I can probably go to twenty feet as long as I can push off the bottom to come back. I've tried to remain cool on the way back up to the surface but there's something about not being able to breath that makes me scramble to the top as fast as I can.
I don’t dive, but aren’t humans crushed like a can 300 feet under water? What am I missing...? Your suit doesn’t seem pressurized, since your hands are exposed. Regardless, wonderful video.
saturation/commercial divers go down to 400ft and below and their equipment isnt that much different, and without any really special stuff people (world record holders) have gotten to about 1000ft. from everything that has been simulated, basically anything below 1500ft is possible. but anything deeper basically requires one of those expensive ass submarine suits or else you will probably die.
What level certification are you? I was just at Cozumel last week and have been PADI certified for 6 years, but never had the desire to go that deep! what are your reasons for diving that far under ?
I have six certifications TDI Advanced Trimix is the deepest but that only goes to 330ft. There's not a deeper certification so I guess you're pretty much cleared to go as deep as you want after that or not. The reason, I'm just curious. I like to push the limits and test the boundaries see what happens. I want to be prepared for deep wreck diving. I've been certified for 40 years.
@@davidkey6145 Well, I do find the video very exciting being a former diver. But always found very deep water below me frightening. Keep being careful!
You could say I'm a GoPro waterproof case tester. I've used cast metal cases before but the gopros change so often that it's cheaper to just dive their waterproof case.
@@davidkey6145 can the ubersuit gopro case survive 400ft deep? I know it's only rated to go 196ft deep. I've brought mine to 160ft and it was fine, but I don't know if I would be willing to try it out at greater than 200ft depth.

I've just read The Last Dive and so this isn't boring, it's actually terrifying.
Oxycheq!!! i love that wing. Nice vid.
Thank you for raw footage
Everyone is impressed by the depth I’m impressed about the camera he is using at that depth. What housing are you using ? Lol
We've just filmed a long natural sight and sound gopro walk through the town and beach but we didn't get to see Cozumel underwater, so We enjoyed watching your underwater footage very much and love the fact that as you say nothing much happens) very restful. Thank you for sharing it.
This isn't a good video for what's available in Cozumel underwater. Cozumel has a lot of life under water and this video doesn't show it.
Wow that's crazy. Deepest I have been is 135 feet. I don't think I would ever want to go below 250ft, even with all the proper equipment.
Nice dive guys. Congrats. I like Tech Diving too. My training limit now is 200 feet. Normoxic Trimix Diver. On the future my plan is to go Full Trimix Diver. I hope soon. Regards from Brazil. Cheers.
That's where we started.
That wrist computer is cool! Last time I went diving it was all analogue gauges and plastic time cards
the gauges don't work for this kind of diving. these things tell us a lot more than the gauges do. We plan for over an hour for each dive not including the equipment prep and mixing gases. A friend said that someone could dive just the gauge and it should work. As far as plastic time cards go, we have plastic paper in our wetsuit sleeves that is used on the way up. Shows each stop; depth, time and gas mix we should be on.
and let me guess, a crotch strap on the BC
You were probably diving with Deep Exposure Dive Shop. I recognize Don's rebreather.
I’ve only cruised to Cozumel, is this the deep area between Cozumel and mainland Mexico?
Well done. Good video. I'll get there one day 😁👍👌
Why not going on a boat on top of the deepest spot and then dive from there?
that's really cool.
What blend of trimix are you breathing at 400 feet?
Hello, which certification do you need to do that? I've been to 120 feet and feels so great, I can't imagine going 400.
What were u guys going that deep for though??
Awesome!! Can someone please tell me which underwater camera has been used?
GoPro rated to 250ft but it worked deeper than that.
Awesome dive it felt almost like I was there
Damn this is awesome, im no where near skilled enough to do this yet but cant wait looks so relaxing
the more you go the better you get, like anything else.
@@davidkey6145 yeah I'm just smart enough to know im not experienced enough yet haha baby steps
Very cool Very technical dive. I'm surprised that everyone's gear is not setup to be streamlined. Would make for a much easier dive. You could tell just buy watching the lead guy, kick and kick and kick some more.
2.5 hrs of deco holy shit. And your air nitrogen ratios are insane. Dude, I could never go that deep.
Riley Zarm its oxygen and helium at those depths.
How about you read the description.
Riley Zarm what about it those ratios are oxygen to helium as I said
Our END (equivalent narcotic depth) is about 119ft, meaning we only experience what anyone would feel at 119ft.
Level 400ft 3:56 (10) Trimix 10/65 1.31 ppO2, 104ft ead, 119ft end
Level 240ft 1:00 (19) Trimix 18/45 1.49 ppO2, 95ft ead, 117ft end
@@benmac7315what at 300 meters?
That’s a whole lot of ambient light for 400 ft??????
Did you watch it my dude?
I was thinking the same thing but people say that sunlight can extend down to 200 meters as long as there is little turbulance in the sea.
A every depth it looks like it's about to get darker but if you keep descending into the darkness it seems to get lighter, or my eyes get used to it. IDK.
Was it Nitrox diving. Any video of your ascent back ? What did the pressure like at 400 ?
It's interesting to see how this compares to Subnautica lol, the gradual "shelfs" as you drop down different depths
This was so relaxing to watch! Was neat to see the light changing, and when the camera was showing the watery ceiling :)
It looks like you guys had fun! How did the pressure feel?
You can't tell any difference but the deeper you go the faster you go deeper. The effect is that the bottom sucks you down to it, so add air to your bc often or you'll blow past your planned depth.
I wonder if if you guys know s rutherford ?! I cannot understand how you could not... I wouldn't be surprised if he were in this episode.
That is a stupidly insane of tanks holyyyy. Imagine trying to walk on land with all that kit, flippers included 💀
Wow nice dive. Well done!
chamkanaab side?
How does the breathing feel compared to 20-30m?
Why it isn’t dark at 400 ft
Ok just started watching, and will continue to do so after this, but how can you do this gloveless? whats the temp down there?
when people wear gloves in CZM it makes me wonder why, please don't touch the coral. It's not too cold, most tech guys wear hoods because breathing helium in the mix makes you cold.
UPDATE they no longer allow gloves or GoPro sticks. Good idea.
Hello there. What computer do u have on? Seen u look at it at start of dive. 😎
SV Methos shearwater petrel or perdix I think, cant make it out for sure on my phone
Sheerwater is the brand I forget the model they've got nicer ones out now.
Super interesting video for those who are interested in technical diving. I have two questions:
What is your SAC rate and how much did you consume of your 125 cu ft Trimix 10/65 during this dive, specifically at 200+ ft? I assume you had doubles of the 10/65?
How thick was your suit? Is neoprene useless at 400ft?
I tried scuba diving on holiday in Gran Canaria. I found it quite scary. You need to have a calmness in you to be able to scuba dive
It's best to be comfortable in the water, you'll get that just takes time in the water. Also what's going to happen will happen whether you're panicking or calm about it so chill.
Yeah if you’re a spazz then don’t dive
@@charlesg7926 says the idiot coming out with childish comments that say more about you then scuba diving
Did bro just litter at 7:06?
Must be a pretty impressive camera to cope with those depths?
gopro can do it
Can you describe any physical changes you felt or noticed after the dive. ie..Narcosis type stuff? Awesome feat. Great job. Glad you are safe at the surface.
Besides feeling a little lucky when you get back to the surface, there were no changes, unfortunately our equivalent narcotic depth is 80ft or so, there's no getting narked. You'd be better off on air going to 150 if you want a good buzz. There are things to take note of, the deeper you go the faster you descend. So once you're deeper than 250 you might want to get a hold of your auto inflator and start putting air in your wing or you'll fly past your planned depth.
Regarding Yuri, it was also a matter of experience and equipment....
What gear do you use reg wing backplate
How do their ears handle it? I can’t even go to the bottom of a 12 foot pool without feeling like my ear is going to explode.
grab your nose and exhale hard when you feel the first bit of pain, you'll hear and feel them clear. Got to do it a lot until about 60 ft then not so much.
Looked wicked dive
got my advanced scuba last year and want to follow your route, i read on one of your messages that the max is 330', ive seen others go 500' how is this possible?
no real max has been identified yet as far as the human body goes. with different gasses and different strategies deeper is still available to those who have the wonder, desire and means. different organizations have different certification numbers for liability sake and training sake, different certifications have different maxes, 330 is TDIs max depth.
Damn...that would terrify me being that deep. I did make it to the bottom of my inground pool, the deep end!
All these years later... I really hope the OC dude with all the stage tanks has learnt how to use fins by now lol :)
What dive center did you use... ???
Where do you get certified, I live in California but haven't been able to find a place that offers technical rebreather certification
don at deep exposure in cozumel
Really enjoyed this video. I've never been past 130 feet and always wondered what actually happens vs the textbook
What camera did you use?
How long did it take to plan this dive
The software will do it quickly but then you have to get three people who are betting a lot to agree on the deco stops. That means going back through and adjusting the stops. There's a link to the plan on one of the comments. It takes longer to fill the tanks with the right mixes, label and load them.
Forgive the potentially dumb question but, how do you dive a 10/60 mix on open circuit from the surface? Wouldn't you go unconscious at shallow depths?
That’s honestly what I was wondering too! You’d think they’d at least take a puff or two of the oxygen one until at like 90 feet
You would start out using one of your breathable gasses as a "travel mix" until you get to a breathable depth of your back gas. (I am a Certified Trimix Diver). The 11% is breathable at 10meters.
What song is playing in the background
some royalty free one I found, youtube is sensitive about songs
I wonder are sharks sitting back watching like look at these fools 😂😂😂
I wonder too and I go down deeper to find out, so far no sharks or sea monsters waiting down there.
David Key sharks are beautiful babies that are a joy to see when you dive my dear dude David
Your breathing is really good
Where is this?
cozumel. it is in the title
Im curious how long do you guys go in the decompression chamber after dive like this? Or you dont?
You do not, All of the deco is in the water. (Unless of course something goes wrong).
@@boxhead171 like flying an instrument approach at minimums, most will never know and shouldnt.
@@davidkey6145 well we all like different things, however from speaking to other tech divers it seems that a common fascination with tech diving is wanting to see how far you can take it (safely of course)

That’s badassery
this is damn dangerous 😯
And stupid!!!!!
life is terminal
but how dont they get narcosis?
Add helium to the mix brings the nitrogen lower. Our equivalent nitrogen depth is only around 70ft.
Do u yous 100 % nitrox ore how
trimix - add helium
Just started my scuba hobby for retirement. Very cool video but I gotta say that is a lot of cost and effort for very little to look at. Still cool though.
This is really good footage. What kind of camera are you using? Also, love the calm music in the beginning.
GoPro 5, says it's good to 250 with the plastic case but it works further than that.
Awesome dive. Which wall was it Santa Rosa? Any huge Lionfish or Goliath grouper? Great vid inspires!!
we are always hunting Lion Fish. A few years ago they were everywhere. I think the hunters are making a huge impact. We really didn't see many this year or last year.
we hit Palancar on the way up but start the dive further away from the shore.
Nice. Do you dive with deep exposure? I dive with tres pelicanos (rec) since I am not tec.
Yes that's the only place you can get helium on the island, the rest cater to rec diving.
Im a free diver but I also like scuba diving, lets you see the underwater world more.
id love to know what you do too. how deep can you go?
Hopefully rebreather dude has learned how to not smash into coral and bottom since then.
Jhony la gente esta muy loca wtf. 😲🤤😨💀
Are you guys lacking the fear gene?
@@davidkey6145 Well, I do find the video very exciting being a former diver. But always found very deep water below me frightening. Keep being careful!
What underwater camera do you have?
gopro, they work past their rated 250ft
This is my friend. He passed in Cozumel from a scuba diving accident and they are covering it up.
what happened? who is covering it up?
So cool, I would love to do some tech diving some day. What kind of camera are you using that can go that deep?
You could say I'm a GoPro waterproof case tester. I've used cast metal cases before but the gopros change so often that it's cheaper to just dive their waterproof case.
@@davidkey6145 can the ubersuit gopro case survive 400ft deep? I know it's only rated to go 196ft deep. I've brought mine to 160ft and it was fine, but I don't know if I would be willing to try it out at greater than 200ft depth.
