170 m Extreme Wall Dive - Salvador Brazil

- This dive was made at the end of the continental shelf wall near from city of Salvador, Brazil. The goal was to reach 200 m in 12 minutes, that if the conditions were favorable, but we got to 170 m in 16 min and our TTS was 5:18 h. This time beyond the expected, although seem small (4 min), prevented us from achieving our target depth. In spite of this, we explore and discovery the secrets and charms that the wall hides and ended up discovering one of the secrets, an interesting deep sea cave. This made it worth every second that we spend on costly and tedious 5 hours of decompression.
We had problems with the lighting because one of our main movie light flooded in the previous dive. The diving was very quiet and had no unforeseen.

I've been mesmerized since I was a kid by the very concept of continents having edges in the form of gargantuan cliffs that go down thousands of meters below the ocean to the abyssal depths. It's just beyond cool that you got to dive into the abyss itself. Thanks so much for sharing!

They’re also very dangerous to dive at too. You not only have to worry about predatory sharks likely to hang out in those areas, but the most dangerous thing about these areas is that vertical currents being present to the areas. Such currents like down currents can swallow you into the abyss and never get back up the wall. There’s also a risk of getting decompression sickness especially if the continental slope starts at 300ft deep underwater. It’s safer to wall dive if you’re a trained professional diver as you know what the dangers are already.

I wouldn't say 'amazing' or 'self control'. With the much equipment and a rebreather they SHOULD NOT be finning to descend using up oxygen, increasing breathing rate and building up CO2 in the loop. Plus the amount of silt they kicked up in the cave.

A scuba dive this deep requires extensive decompression in the water, during the slow ascent.They are doing it properly., using mixed gases,, helium-oxygen-nitrogen/air. only expert divers can swim to 500 ft. Depth safely, and return.

Yea, but to do it in a 3rd world country, where medical care was distant and sketchy at best, seems a bit risky..

David shaw went to almost 900 trying to bring back that body when he passed which even tho he was a very experienced diver it's still very dangerous at that depth cuz of the compression on everything plus David was having to do one hour of deco every 1 minute he was down at that depth that is crazy!!! Yet a shame he passed away during that
Hi Tony! Thanks for watching and ask. Form the bottom (171 m) to de last decompression stop I used 1.3. After end the decompression, form 6 m to surface I used 0.7. During decompression, due to the high CNS (184%) I made two break periods with SP 0.5 for 10 min each.

Many saturation dives taken by commercial divers result in 8 DAYS of decompression and the deepest excursions can take up to 15 DAYS to decompress.
Kriss, how do you pass the time doing decompression?
@Pagani Zonda commercial divers do their decompression in a pressure chamber, so they can just Hang out in there and do whatever they please.
@Pagani Zonda as far as i know, they are taken to the surface inside a pressurized bell, and are then transferred into a deco chamber directly
I worked on the great lakes as a professional Scuba Diver back in the 70s. Back then, we thought the 80 Cubic foot aluminum tanks were high-tech. My deepest Cold water dive was in Lake Superior at around 150 feet. I was wearing a Harvey’s Dry suit and twin 72s. Also a Scuba Pro Mark 7 Regulator; I really thought I was using peak underwater technology. Watching you guys now is impressive. If I tried it, you mine as well not wait for me because I doubt I would be coming back up.

I dive and don't get it. Climbing Everest is full of variables even on one of the tour packages. This is a technical exercise based upon known factors.
The fastest milkman in the West it takes YEARS of training and experience to do technical dives such as this, whereas anybody with bookoos of money in decent shape can climb Everest in a matter of months, so yeah, don't compare the two.

It is vastly more difficult to reach a level of competency to do this than climb Everest. even to make it to this point in training with a competent instructor is more than a couple of months. Hell, one of the PROBLEMS with Everest expeditions is the simplification leading to everyone with money attempting the climb, and getting people killed at the step.
So yes, SHOOSH, you don't know what you're talking about.

They will either laugh at you or take you to the mental institution. Same case with wanting to scale the everest solo, with only months of training. Actually the both are comparable.
Thou the other is emphasizing on physical and mental shape, the other are almost solely relying on technical knowledge and mental aspect.

I'm a diver and it was an amazing technical dive. Albeit, you need a bit of serious gear and goulash to do such an activity. But if you use the Everest analogy, same goes there. Thanks for showing!

Sick dive! I haven't done a REAL dive (>100m) in half a year, this made me want to get back into it! Interesting choice of bailout, seemed like you guys should have had more O2 for that long of dive and perhaps Nitrox 50? I thought it was really cool the way you commentated on the process, it takes A LOT of planning for these kinds of dives!
Everything that lasts longer than you can hold your breath and is outside of a pool is a real dive.
they do not write the plan of dive because each serious team write the plan only for themselves. As international diver instructor I'm agree. I think that each team need of different plan because every body on dive has different parameters and each dive can to be with different difficulties

Cool seeing more and more people sat. Diving, my deepest 103ft nothing compared to this.
Decompression diving and saturation diving is not the same. Saturation diving is when the start and end of the dive is at high pressure (pressurised underwater habitat). Starting and ending at depth means no need for deco.
This dive started and finished at the surface and required lengthy decompression, it was not a saturation dive.
I'm just wondering whether it was intentional to kick a silt all over the place :-) We do it very often to simulate zero visibility. To make dive more extreme! But we are using our hands, not fins.
Now in 2021, to dive this rebreather in 2014 it seems like heroes adventures;)

Many experienced commercial divers make saturation dives where they reside at very deep points in the ocean in a specialized habitat, sometimes even up to 1000ft and take 8 DAYS on average to decompress. The deeper SAT dives can take 15 DAYS to decompress!

Amazing dive my friend but i have a Q how culd u guys handled 184 cns?! Is there was no symptoms or somthing ? I learned in my trimix course that i cant exceed100% and congrats for such an achievement

This cannot have been easy to plan!! Did you different mixed of helioxes aswell? I assume the ppo2 will go above 1.4 with a regular heliox at 170m! You must have had multiple blends. Great work!

Question? Was there any vertical currents in this location? Down currents and up currents are pretty common near abyssal drop offs like in this video.
So far I have not seen updrafts or downdrafts in these places.

Hello Pierre Louis! Thank for watching my video and do questions. The computer that I used was a X1 from Liquivision, that not is more manufactured. Today use the Shearwater Nerd, Petrel and AV1. In the past used the VPM but today use Bühlmann with GF 50/60. Had DCI with VPM on deep dives

I'm surprised that at this technical level, you guys are not using underwater comms. If you are, i missed it. Massive respect for you my friend, takes balls of steel, mastery, and a lot of time underwater to do this rather simple dive to the eyes of those that watch behind a screen, but its demanding by nature for those who practice it. Keep it up on the music tho, not the best chice for this video IMO.
to use underwater comms would require a FFM, which is generally considered to be a horrendous idea while carrying multiple stage cylinder, a redbreather, and using team bailout strategies.

how do you know the accent speed? is it just watch the bubbles rise? or do you just got 2 meter increments?? how do you work out an accent that large ?

Thanks for watching and commenting my video! Before the dive I plan using a decompression software that is Multideco or Subsurface. These software as well as the dive computers will show the speed of ascent. If you ascent faster than indicated, it will alert you. It is usually a slowed down ascent, ie faster at greater depths and slower at smaller ones. For these dives I use a scrubber with capacity for 4 kg of sodasorb, this in warm water (26 degrees C) can give approximately 8 hours. The most I ever spent was 7 hours on a dive. A friend has already gone 9 with a double rebreather.

It really gets dark down there
Ocean in tropical water actually gets dark around 200 meters deep aka 660 ft. Once you hit 3,282 ft aka 1000 meters deep, you reach the depth where NO sunlight reaches you. It’s also where if you’re at 1000 meters without a submersible, you would be instantly crushed in seconds as the water pressure at 1,000 meters is 5,000 psi. Abyssal zone is 11,000 psi, and the Trench zone is at 16,000 psi.

3. How long did it take you to descend to 170m?
4. How many safety stops do you have to do and at how many meters and for how long?
5. How many tanks of air(per person)?
6. How long was this dive for?
7. At what depth did the visibility disappear?
8.How far were you from the boat when you ascended?
I think that's about it....for now 😅
Sara's Randomz Thank you for watching and asking these questions. 1. I am CCR trimix and cave, but this certification would only allow me to go up to 100 m. I think there is no certification that contemplates this depth. 2. Because I wanted to. 3. 18 min. 4. There were no safety stops, I just followed the computer. 5. One rebreather and 4 S80 bailout tanks. There were still other tanks on the boat that the safety diver could bring us if necessary. We used the rebreather all the time, there was no need for the other tanks. 6. 332 min. 7. visibility has not disappeared. What was very reduced was the ambient light. Below 120 m the flashlight was needed. 8. About 400 m.

My instructor would have probably just about killed me if I kicked up that much silt, and swum up on the ascent, and I'm only Tec 40. But he is big on buoyancy control and finning techniques etc. Awesome video though great info on the planning etc.

@@laszlomocsari2118 The music in the intro oscillates between two channels intentionally, I'm looking at it on an EQ and it's made that way. On a pc with good speaker separation, it creates a reverb sounding effect.
More tame music would have been a much better choice, I think some of the other commenters agree as well.

AboMyDyingBride, It's very simple, either I die or I survive! Problems at this depth often do not depend on the equipment but on the operator (human failure) such as CO2 retention, narcosis, hyperoxia, DCI. In the event of failure of the rebreather we are taking enough gases to only one get out of the main apparatus.
