Yep. Same here. And I appreciate that as well. I think she’s right. Looking at all of these cars I don’t know how any of them are sub-compact. These are what compact used to be 10 years ago.
I want an engaging sub compact SUV to drive. My 2021 Honda HR-V EX FWD with paddles I love in sport mode. My HR-V is a little too big for what I need. I'll compromise the back seat room which I never use and cargo in back for fun factor. Also great MPG is crucial. Thanks Andrea! First time I've watched your channel. Best!!!
I replaced my wife’s 2020 Honda CR-V EXL which was stolen, with a 2022 Honda CR-V, Touring model in September, 2022! In November,22, I bought a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Limited! I absolutely love it! I find it truly, fun to drive, peppy and even averaged 34 mpg/hwy! On hard acceleration the Crosstrek is quieter than the CR-V!
I feel the CX-30 is the most driver focused subcompact suv in the segment. I was on the fence about getting a 2024 seltos and the 2024 CX-30. But once I drove the Mazda I completely fell in love with the Interior, engine and exterior. Its just me for now and I don’t prioritize the space. And I am a complete driving enthusiast. Living in Canada, AWD is kind of a must and the added ground clearance is a big bonus. The car is an SUV but it drives like a hot hatch. Just got the delivery for the CX-30 5 days ago, and so far Im loving everything about it.
Unless you got the turbo CX-30, it is more of a "warm" hatch, but yea, at least on good roads it is a very nice driver's car, and definitely a plus that the 2.5L is standard.
It's a great driving car, but it's not an suv. The back seat is useless. For 1 or 2 people is great, but frankly not sure why people wouldn't just buy a mazda 3 if they don't need a true back seat.
I agree totally we bought a CX 30 sport, base version for 25,000, 2 years ago and we just love the car, there’s only two of us, but we travel all the time there’s plenty of room for what we need, occasionally we have a third passenger or fourth but that’s very seldom and we really just push the seats up a little bit in the front and they’re in just fine for the 3 to 4 mile trip we make with them, it’s no big deal, we at least, for ourselves, are very glad we purchased the CX 30 , it’s fun and great to drive in ,Boy does it move. It’s also appointed inside like a luxury car. Love Mazda!
@@abelkwh There is a slight turbo lag at stop but pretty zippy after that. The fuel economy is 25-26 mpg combined (less than others in this car category). Overall, great first new car.
Yea, I love the SX package with navigation, Bose, turbo and 8 speed auto. Probably the best value in the group. If I were buying now in this segment, it would be either the SX or Crosstrek Sport (US trim, has the 2.5L).
I have to agree with Andrea on the CX 30, we love ours, had it two years now, yes, it’s smaller, not that small, , but as mentioned, if you don’t have a need or kids, it’s a wonderful vehicle to jet around in, and it does move fast, my brothers cross tek is very nice with great all wheel drive also, but it’s just so slow, compared to the CX 30, I like the looks of the Mazda better too. It’s nimble and fast, and I personally like the looks of it. We just move our front seats up a little bit if we have a third or fourth passenger, which is very seldom, and they’ve always seemed to be quite content, as it’s generally just for shorter trips anyway. The only thing I’m not crazy about is how small the side windows are, and if you want to put your arm up on the side, It’s a little bit difficult but I can live with it. I’m just not a fan of CVT engines either and Mazda doesn’t have that which I’m very happy with. I agree with Andrea totally ! We only paid 25,000 for our 2022 CX 30. Awd base model, and it has tons of options standard, a great deal we think.
Camp Andrea. The Mazda CX-30 has the best engine, fun to drive, great handling, luxurious cabin and a ton of features like apple wireless CarPlay, HUD, parking sensors, and an amazing BOSE 12 speaker sound system on the higher trims.
Thanks for the roundup! I'm looking at the Trax, Envista, and the Subaru- both the Crosstrek but also the Impreza. Still mad that my current Mazda rusted out so badly, so Mazda off my list for a while!
Great review! I can’t believe how expensive this class has become. I remember a time when the Hondas and Toyotas in this class topped out under $30K CAD. Now the occupy RAV4 and CRV price territory and the CRV and RAV sit in the previous X3 and GLC price range!! WHOA!
HR-V will get a hybrid powertrain in 2026 when it’s due for a refresh, making it much more competitive, powerful and efficient. I wouldn’t even consider one with the current powertrain as it’s too sluggish.
Poor gas mileage too considering CRV gets better. Honda made a mistake getting rid of the Fit. It's a loss of affordable and good fuel economy vehicles in the business.
@dudesome6969 I totally agree! We are the original owners of a 2007 Honda Fit 5 speed manual. Love this car. 163,000 km. Sorry to see it disappear as the mileage is in Hybrid territory and the Magic seats are incredible for hauling everything!! I bet this car will last us at least another 10 years+.
Great picks! I agree with you Zach on the Chevy Trax! I actually introduced a co-worker to this model cause he's not familiar with new car options (not a car guy). He took a look at them and really liked the styling and the price. He ended up buying one and he loves it!!
@@davidpan1134 I would probably wait for a trax unless you have to have all wheel drive. You don't get much more with the trailblazer for the price. I know a few people that own a new Trax and love them. Try other dealships as well. As always you have to be weary of any new car just cause not all of the bugs have come out yet.
I more often agree with Andrea, driving fun is high on my list…however on this one I’ll go with Zack’s choice. The CX-30 is just too compromised for space. It’s a shame because it looks great!
It's really about what you like and what you need. None of these subcompact SUVs can touch Mazda for its handling and precise steering. But if you need the space, there are certainly better options.
As a 2024 Mazda3 Turbo owner, I couldn't agree more with Andrea! I test drove CX30, but eventually decided on mazda3 because I generally prefer sedans over SUV's, but CX30 with turboengine is overkill! It's terrific inside and out, built with impeccable quality (you know where your money goes haha) and drives like no other!
It’s hard to believe how much vehicles have gone up I swear it wasn’t that long ago the CR-V was same price as the HR-V. I hate to say it but I also agree with Zach for final pick. I don’t know why Mazda cant make a more spacious vehical. The trax is a great value but lack of all wheel drive in Sask is a deal breaker.
As a fellow team mazda i knew Andrea would pick cx-30. I think cx-30 is great if you dont use backseat much. I wouldnt want to put a child seat in there as there are simply not enough rooms. Good for young couple with no kids. If i may actually suggest an alternative then it would be cx-5. Cx-5 is actually not much bugger than the biggies in “subcompact” like HRV and taos. And It’s not much more expensive. Really give it a try if you are buying a subcompact. Its one of the smaller compact suvs and a really great alternative.
2:15 My issue isn't even peak power, its about NVH. When you have an underpowered naturally aspirated engine, you can hear and feel it working REALLY hard. The Trax has an underpowered engine too, at least from a horsepower standpoint, but the fact that its turbocharged muffles the exhaust a bit extra, and the midrange torque means it doesn't have to rev as high and so remains quieter. Same with say a BMW i3 electric, yeah, it doesn't have much power for its weight but the fact that its silent means you can happily floor it all over the place and it doesn't feel like its working hard.
It is definitely in my top two to test drive. I think the Sport model is nice looking, affordable, and lots of great features. As you say- ticks all the boxes!
Great list!!! I’m camp both! Love the CX-30, the backseat is way too small though but so much fun! I’m glad to see the 2024 Chevy Trax make the list because I got it for my daughter and her husband. I drove it today and I’m amazed every time I get in the car with the space, infotainment, even with the three cylinder plenty of power for me, and the value! I do wish it was AWD bc I like the looks of the Trax better than the trailblazer. The same is true of the Buick Envista…I like the look of that better than the Encore! Thanks again for a very entertaining post!
We bought the 2024 Crosstrek Onyx 2.5 and love it ! Find the dual pinion steering feel to be perfect, highway speeds we only need two fingers to control the strait line stability and find the Crosstrek so nimble in town driving. It looks sporty has great visibility and is so comfortable, can’t say enough, just love it !!! Love your reviews, keep them coming🥰🥰
I worked for Subaru and I can’t help but feel other than the loyalty brand it is just not worth more than a Toyota. But I do love me a crosstrek. With that being said, just make sure you keep up with the maintenance. While working at the service side so many people would not change their oil over a year just cause they wouldn’t reach the mileage. Others would wait until 10k. That boxer engine and the cvt transmission just loves to leak oil once it starts reaching those 80k and above miles. Again, I love Subaru as a brand in itself and if I had money to spare I’d just go for a Subaru and not care but I just feel Like Subaru needs to do way better
@@IAmJeka thanks for that information, I’m fanatical about servicing my vehicles, never go the recommended service intervals, I do mine way sooner, even other fluids in my car get changed sooner. Transmission should be done at or before 60,000 kms and everytime there after. Differentials I do at the same time but after breakin I always do both differentials at the first 10,000 km mark. Fluids are the lifeblood of any car and cheap insurance to do them. I must admit though, I never keep a vehicle beyound 100,000 kms. Guess I’m helping out the second owner 😊
I had a 2024 Kia Seltos EX FWD as a rental 1 month ago for 1 week. I was very impressed with it. Time will tell if I get the Seltos vs the Soul as my next vehicle sometime within the next 6 months.
When I was looking for a new car last year, the Mazda CX-30 Turbo was at the top of my list, but eventually I went back to the Subaru Crosstrek because of the added clearance, and the awd that is one of the best in the business (I live in snow country.) I thought I might regret the loss of power, (traded in a 2005 WRX,) or the CVT, (have only driven stick my whole life,) but I am very happy with it. A turbo version of the Crosstrek would be the best, but it's never going to happen.
It should be noted that the prices do not include the destination charge. Add about $1,300 for that. My heart wants a Seltos or Kona. It should be noted that the base Kona in the U.S. is less equipped but also cheaper than the base Seltos. They're both stylish and roomy with great content. Questionable reliability though. Their prices are getting bold, pushing into Honda and Toyota territory when reliability is definitely not there. My head wants an HRV or Corolla Cross. They're the pragmatic choices. Unfortunately, they're also the most lackluster to look at and drive. The Trax appeals to my head and heart. Looks great. Very practical with its size and price. I'm VERY leery about long-term reliability though. Chevy really needs to up their warranty to Hyundai levels for me to feel comfortable buying a Trax.
I am sorry I am not crazy about Honda and GM. I am crazy about outback and crosstrex. And also Mazda has most of the vehicles are so good looking. VW is not bad. Great show Andrea! 👍🏻👍🏻☕️☕️ Resistance is futile! 😆
Zack is so right about keyboard part 😂, but I can't blame him, most men are concerned about the economical viewpoint. A 3cylinder engine with turbo with a chevrolet badge, sounds so risky. Although the price is without doubt, mouth watering.
Exactly what I thought 😂 i’d still wait to see how many of these get towed by my favourite tow truck channels. A tiny 3 cylinder with a turbo isn’t exactly what I’d call a recipe for reliability. And with GM’s other issues on their bigger vehicles, i’d be worried about this thing. But i wouldn’t be surprised if it was quite bad, you get what you paid for. I’d rather the Corolla Cross even though it’s more expensive because of hybrid and AWD.
I bought the 2024 Honda HRV LX AWD. Traded in my beloved 2009 Honda Civic still going strong. I like Honda reliability. I like my HRV. Spacious. Good back seat room and cargo space. Ride is fine. Do a lot of high speed highway driving and just fine. Little noise, don't kow why one in video sounds so loud as not my experience. Get lots of compliments. Have the nordic forest pearl color people love with grey interior. Merging onto highway seems same as my 2009 and in seconds I am speeding along. I often.have to watch as don't realize how fast I am going and I typically drive above the speed limit on a highway with no traffic lights to slow me down. Nice looking car. Happy with the spacious remodel as was too small before. Another vehicle I would consider is Subaru Crosdtrek.
My top 5 (US) in no particular order: 1) CX-30 base engine, 2) Kia Seltos 1.6L turbo 3) Buick Encore GX with 1.3L, 4) Subaru Crosstrek with 2.5L, 5) Buick Envista
CX-30 base engine is kinda lame though IMO, not all that powerful or efficient, and usually you want one of the two. I'd go 1) 2024 Hyundai Kona 2) 2024 Subaru Crosstrek 3) 2024 Kia Seltos 4) 2024 Chevy Trax 5) 2024 Trailblazer with the 1.3
We absolutely love our 2024 Chevrolet Trax. Fits our family of 4 (two tall teens, two adults) and is the perfect blend of features for an incredible price. We had a strict budget, were looking to buy cash and not add a monthly payment, but didn't want to completely sacrifice on interior features or style. We test drove a bunch of different crossover vehicles across many makes, in the end Trax checked all the boxes. We were out the door at $25.7K (Washington State, USA) If you're someone who is in the market and feeling, for whatever reason, priced out by the bigger names in the space when it comes to new, before you pivot toward used, I highly suggest you test drive the new Trax; you could end up with a brand new car that is a legitimate challenger to the big players in the subcompact crossover arena!
same scenario. strict budget, paying cash. we went with the crosstrek. premium model with the smaller engine; 2.0 motor comes with a 17" wheel while the 2.5 comes with an 18 and i wanted a cheaper tire replacement cost in the future. out the door at $25,561. id love to hear how the 4 months since u posted this have fared. i liked the trax, but we wanted awd if possible
@@ROBinJVILLE 4 months in and we absolutely love it. Our two older, adult-sized teens fit perfectly in the back with room to spare. We're mostly city mice, so we haven't missed the AWD, and the engine has plenty of pep; never have been left wanting there. Handles like a dream. The only complaint has been some intermittent glitchy-ness with the infotainment system, which we were aware of going in. Nothing that ever lasts, and is usually resolved with a power cycle or the next time we get in to drive. 95% of the time it works as expected, and some issues that were happening early (static or poor quality sound via wireless CarPlay) haven't happened again in 2+ months. Gas mileage has been as advertised. We're taking the advice found elsewhere and sticking to a strict 5K oil change cadence, but our dealership gives us three free oil changes a year for life, so that's no problem at all. TL;DR - four months in we love our 2024 (base model) Trax more than the first day we drove it off the lot!
I have to go with Andrea on this one on the CX-30. What is the point in driving if it isn't fun? Sure there are space compromises but I am not riding in the back seat. You may as well try to drive a refrigerator as it would be the same amount of fun.
I'm camp Zach and camp Andrea. You both are awesome and your videos are the best. Please keep it going, there really isn't another auto review channel quite like this one 😊
Because of Andrea I got the CX 30, if I'm going to pay $35k for a nice solid vehicle I have to make sure I do a lot of research and this channel was a very informative one. I got the 2024 cx 30 turbo premium, no regrets. Im single and no kids so if I ever do have a family one day I'm getting the cx 5 or cx 50. Also stay away from Kia and Hyundai, even if they are new vehicles their engines deteriorate over time. Not to mention the risk of someone breaking in because of the kia boys. Replacing the windows can get costly over time.
I just test drove a Trax. I loved it. I drove quite a few subcompact SUVs and it really is a nice ride. My issue was that some of the electronics seemed to have "bugs" in it. Then we went back inside the showroom and low and behold the $170K Corvette has electrical issues as well. I've read a variety of reviews tonight concerning issues with electrical in Chevys. The Trax in particular had some real horror stories. Do you have a comment or a renewed opinion on the Trax?
I'm in Alberta and my daughter just ordered a Mazda CX-30, all in including GST at $33k. The base model has a 2.5L engine with a 6 speed transmission, 191 hp, same engine in Mazda CX-5. Most of the other Subcompacts with a 2.5L engine as you mentioned are $40k. The Kia dealship I found was to padding their pockets with a few extra bucks and nobody is selling pre-orders. They get the cars in batches and a month out you can get a VIN number. So most dealers are telling you what they have coming in shortly. Most disappointed with Toyota dealerships because they're moving away from tried and true gas engines and transmissions. Very difficult to find an affordable, attainable, available subcompact SUV because the dealerships really want to up-sell the consumer.
It's such a great choice and the non-turbo engine CX-30 trims offer a lot of value. It's really the turbocharged 2.5L that gets expensive. We've driven both and the non-turbo powertrain is tuned beautifully that sometime I have a hard time telling the difference between the turbo and non-turbo.
Southern California Driver here and I LOVE my Niro. If you don't need all-wheel drive, and if you mainly drive suburban streets and freeways it's an amazing vehicle.
Zack, Zack, Zack. Fair game for wanting to add the Trax, but no need to bury the CX-30 here. It’s a fantastic option in this class and you know it. Backseat room is fair game, but cargo space is such a subjective argument. What are people hauling these days? Dead bodies? You mentioned the turbo as being out of step with the industry and yet you said the Trax has a turbo and that’s not to mention the CX-30 has a non-turbo option. CX-30 has a very nice design (Ferrari Purosangue looks like it), upscale interior, excellent drive, relatively quiet cabin, great sound system, AWD, etc, etc. And have a look at the CX-30’s JD Power ratings and compare it to everything else on this list, and the RAV 4 while I’m at it. Is the CX-30 perfect? No. I can’t wait until they come out with a hybrid/EV option. Still, it’s a great option in this class and it’s an amazing option if you compare it to the luxury sub-compact options.
I agree on Zacks pick, the Chevrolet Trax. $12 grand cheaper than the Mazda. I do like the Mazda as well, but not $12 grand more for most expensive model. I will be test driving a Chevrolet trax soon. Love value and features. can’t beat it Thanks for your video.
Well actually base model to base model, there is only a difference of $6,340 CAD/$4,595 USD which may be enough to sway people who are on a tighter budget. However, the Mazda comes standard with AWD and it has a lot more power in a 2.5L non-turbo engine vs the Trax with a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder engine. You can't compare the CX-30's turbocharged 2.5L 4-cylinder with 227 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque on regular fuel, that's where the almost $12,000 CAD difference comes into play. They are night and day at that point. However, if you just want to drive an inexpensive FWD model, the Trax is tough to beat, but it doesn't compare with the CX-30 for driving dynamics. Different needs and wants.
I bought a Corolla cross hybrid in august- ordered in june- Make sure you contact multiple dealers, I think that Toyota hybrids are more available than some dealerships would like us to know- My Dad ordered one in September- it is due any day
Great list, including the honourable mentions! Not any misses out of your entire list I don't think. I'd go for maybe a CC Hybrid if I wanted really good fuel economy, and otherwise the base engine CX-30. Don't need all that much space myself
Andrea is absolutely right about the CX-30 being a fantastic car and worth the mention. And yes, it's a subcompact! Some people don't want/need a larger car that keep growing every model redesign (I'm looking at you HR-V and your 9 inch growth spurt). Skip the Chevy and buy a used Mazda and you'll save money anyway 😅
Beyond value, the new Trax is one of the best looking vehicles in the class, both inside and out. Just wish it could do the occasional light towing duty for a small boat or home center run. The Kia Seltos was impressive in this regard, with very good towing ability for the class. Thanks for the great roundup!
The Crosstrek Wilderness has a transmission oil cooler and is rated to tow 3500 pounds. Not sure that one would want to tow a trailer that weighs as much as the vehicle with only 182 HP, but it should be good for light towing in most circumstances.
Kona is really nice. The base 2.0 is in my 2018 Elantra, with manual transmission... the engine is so reliable. I'm very impressed. I have 135k on it and other than brakes once and gen maintenance, I had to change a wheel bearing..and the water outlet was seeping. Under $500 in 6 yrs. Car has been amazing.
I'm definitely with Team Zack on this one! These days, value is way more important than a 250 hp turbo and a high price! Zack, please remind Andrea that the MX-5 is fun to drive and it doesn't have a lot of horsepower! 😊
The CX-30 does offer great value, but right now you are comparing a 1.2L turbocharged 3-cylinder to a 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder, there's no comparison. You have to compare it to the CX-30's non-turbo engine which is absolutely terrific with not much more horsepower than the MX-5, I would be happy to drive that one too, that's where the value is. I could get the GS CX-30 trim with the non-turbo engine for $34,170 CAD, only $3300 CAD more than the top trim Trax and you get standard AWD with the CX-30. The CX-30 GS trim is actually the most popular choice because it offers great value.
@andreaspencer9813 I still think that the Trax is a much better value because it has more space inside, better visibility, similar reliability, and you don't have to go to the top trim to get great features. Plus, they come in some flashy colours that will go with your wardrobe! 😉 Is Zack gonna leave me hanging here without some backup? Lol
I am with Andrea on this as most of the time we don't fill the vehicle with 5 people, If so sub compact vehicles are not your option, also keep in mind the reliability and long term ownership cost on Mazda is very low compared to a Chevy
What’s Zach smoking? The Chevy Trax? In Canada? With NO all wheel drive? I did ride in one with Uber. It looks modern and expensive on the outside, once you get inside it has modern technology, but the fit and finish cheap quality soon starts to show. Hard plastic everywhere. I drive up a mountain pass to get to work. I’m not trying to get killed without all wheel drive in the winter and trying to pass slow trucks going uphill while another truck is going 80mph and I’m in a 3-cylinder vehicle. Zach must be on Chevy’s payroll!!!! I can smell the sponsorship check from here! 😂
I finally made up my mind and traded my 2014 Civic for a 2024 Honda HRV Sport. Really like the steering and driving position. Overall a good solid subcompact for running around town in. Just me driving so its just fine. Good 2.0 engine as well. I tried it on the highway, a little slow getting going but once your up to speed its pretty smooth and quiet. My city driving mileage is 9.9L/100km, not great but its not unusual for the posted mileage not to always be met under everyday driving conditions.
Traded my 2009 Honda Civic EX for the Honda HRV LX AWD. Quite happy. Spacious. And I drive highway with no traffic lights, high speed and the HRV is fine and I don't notice road noise.
I would’ve added the Kia Niro with it’s three powertrain versatility for that reason alone. Plus, as you say it’s one of the larger ones in the segment. Plus, five year warranty.
Kia Niro vs Chev Trax? Tough call they are very similar in size but the MSRP is about $4,700 US more for the Niro. Zack commented that the Niro HEV is underpowered. How does it compare to the 1.2L T in the Trax? Looking at inventory for Trax in Seattle I see one dealer is selling some models at MSRP while the same dealer has a $2K markup on another Trax. The other dealer has more stock and is advertising MSRP with some discounted $1,200. A brand new, updated CUV at $21,400 is unbeatable for someone looking for that size vehicle with a 5 yr / 6t0,000 mile drivetrain warranty! Good call Zack. That said, I have never been a GM fan. if I had the extra $5K I'd spring for the Niro as it has a solid, proven drivetrain (8+ yrs), much longer warranty, and will go twice as far on a gallon of gas in the city. I also confess to being the happy owner of a 2019 Niro PHEV😁
Team Zach, I bought the Buick envista avenir with all the options. Power hatch, heated steering wheel and seats, adaptive cruise, auto wipers and all led lighting. Plus 3 years of free WiFi hotspot and onstar. 31k U.S. I have never gotten so many compliments on a car before. Everyone thinks it costs 10 to 15k more!
The H-RV has 1.5 turbo and 2.0 hybrid options in other countries. Except its no longer called the H-RV but the Z-RZ. There is still yet another H-RV thats not exported to the US and Canada, and this one is based off the Fit with a 1.5 and 1.5 Turbo as the options.
I had a 2020 CX30 with the naturally aspirated engine. Both my wife and I didn’t like it and traded it in after 5 months. The engine, transmission and 22 mpg were a dealbreaker.
Like the Trax, but FWD only is a problem in Quebec. What is the best choice with AWD and low fuel consumption? The hybrids are nice, but is there anything available with less than a year wait?
I'd think the Mazda CX-30 would be your best option, or the Crosstrek. Don't go Korean or Domestic - you'll either take a huge hit on depreciation, repair costs, or both!
I recently purchased the CX30 after testing several other small sub-compact SUV's The Buick and Chevy small SUV's were ok, but not on par with the CX30 as well as the Kia's, Ford's, Honda's and Toyota's did not compare well with the CX30. CX 30 was mechanically a better choice with the naturally aspirated 2.5L - no turbo and it moved well and can get you in and through traffic easily. Based on other reviews the non-turbo CX30 will hit 0 to 60 mph in about 7.7 to 8.0 seconds which is great for any SUV.. The other great this is that is is not a "hybrid" - just one more thing to break down and replace in the future as I keep my vehicles for a long time. . Also, no CVT in the CX30 - this to me is also a plus. Handling is very good and interior room is adequate for a sub-compact. Overall it hit nearly everything I was seeking in a sub-compact SUV. I am averaging 36 mpg on the highway at 70+ Mph, and combined city and highway I am getting 32 mpg. Try one out - you might just like it!
I would agree on the Crosstrek, Seltos, and Corolla Cross (only the hybrid). My fourth pick would be the CX-30 since I am retired and usually only have two passengers. The negatives for the CX-30 other than the cramped interior are the beam rear axle and the non touch infotainment system. Not sure what I would pick for #5. Probably Kona, but that is basically the Kia. Not a fan of the HR-V: relatively expensive, has a mediocre AWD system and needs an optional powerplant or the Civic turbo as the standard engine. Since I live in snow country, the Trax is a no go from the start. Any "SUV" without the availability of AWD is only a pretender IMO.
I keep hearing praise that subcompact vehicles got bigger, but then aren't they no longer subcompacts and simply compact SUVs? What is the difference between a subcompact and compact other than size?
Bro I can't believe anybody would leave out the cx-30 when talking about subcompact. It has the most luxurious feel for its segment and excellent value
For the Trax, having no AWD is not a negative. With AWD vehicles if you get a sidewall (or close to sidewall) puncture in well worn tyres, you need to buy a whole set of tyres because of the AWD. That's a very expensive puncture. I almost got stung with this recently. Nobody talks about this when mentioning awd on vehicles. Also I've previously had fwd vehicles and they were not bad in the snow. I'd say, before you buy awd, consider if you're happy with a $1000 puncture repair bill. If not, go with fwd
I got the Crosstrek Onyx and I love it. I looked at a lot of vehicles but ultimately ended up looking at the Mazda cx-30 and the Crosstrek. We ended up at the Subaru dealership first and when my wife didn’t have any complaints, we just went with the Crosstrek. Very happy with it and all the extras.
I agree with Andrea. GM is known to have year one problems and already showing them. I'd rather have a smile on my face than spend it looking at my bank balance...drain at the dealer service center
Thank you for the reviews. I have decided to get the Corolla Cross 👍 Are Canadians still able to take advantage of Car Cost Canada, with your coupon code???
OK Zack so you mentioned the bank account: What about the fact that the mazda 2.5 engine has a proven ten year track record and is one of the most reliable engines on the market today? Compare that to the Chevy three cylinder turbo??? What about the fact that the mazda has a (non cvt) transmission that is also one of the most reliable on the market compared to a new transmission from Chevrolet which is not too likely to latst very long?? I think long term reliablity is the key factor if you are thinking about dollars. It is nice that JD power rates all cars about the same for reliability but i would suggest checking multiple sources. If you were to do that, you would find that Mazda is consisently rated as the most reliable brand all around these days, even bettter than Toyota and if just feels so muich better :) However, I would recommend the CX-5 over the CX-30 have driven both. Thanks for the laughs!
Great analysis and I particularly appreciate that you give information specifically for Canada. Having recently been shopping for a new vehicle, I really liked the way the Mazda CX 30 drives. But despite not being overly tall at 5 ft 9 in, I found the Mazda to be a tight fit in the cabin. Particularly, I found the visors above the windshield to be really close to my head. If I had only watched this video before I signed my lease, I definitely would have gone to check out the Chevy Trax. It sounds like a really good deal, particularly if you're leasing short-term.
I like you both Andrea and Zack your channel is outstanding 👏 👌 You both help educate consumers like me understand what's important in the car buying process like the pros and cons you make.
Thank You Guys, Love the content and all the information above. I purchase a 2022 Taos base model because no CVT good vehicle, also I was going to ask if you test drive a VW Passat GT and what you think ?, Have a great day.
Thanks for the video and information. Always enjoyable and helpful! I keep hearing from multiple sources that the Subaru Crosstrek Sport represents good value, build quality, and price point. I have also heard a lot of good press on the Corona Cross. If I can get into one at about the 31k US range for the hybrid- it will be compelling. I suspect it will end up being closer the 36K with the dealer mark-ups these days. I think I'd also like to test drive the Mazda CX-30 based on your recommendation. I plan to test drive all three models and assess which one is the best fit in terms of price point and features.
Camp Zack here. Not because the CX-30 isn't a good option in the class, but subcompact vehicles are often about price and value, and the Chevy nails it. Sure, it's lacking AWD and the engine may be a bit of question mark long term, but if you need something in this class with some decent features that keeps the price down, it's tough to beat. I think another good value option here is the Crosstrek. It has the best AWD system and the newer models are well equipped and a decent price. You will also benefit from the best resale in the industry when the time comes to move on to something different down the road. Subaru also has a very loyal customer base, so you may get a different Subaru vehicle to replace it later.
The CX-30 non-turbo trims offer some great value too, the most popular one in Canada is the GS trim with great features and just over $3,000 CAD more compared to the Trax top trim but you get standard AWD with the CX-30. I think many are comparing the turbocharged 2.5L CX-30 pricing with the Trax but that's a completely different engine, no comparison. Here's something interesting the Subaru Crosstrek with the 2.5L non-turbo engine which competes well against the CX-30's non-turbo engine is actually $3,000 CAD more than the CX-30 GS trim. You can only get that Subaru engine starting on the Onyx trim. The value is there with the CX-30, it's very competitive with the non-turbo engine which is what most people are buying. The turbocharged option is available for those who want it but you'll pay more for it which is fine, it has a lot more power than any other vehicle in this class, it's kind of a special model.
@@andreaspencer9813 fair enough (regarding the lower trims in Mazda). As you and Zack have mentioned, it comes down to personal priorities. You like that "sporty and engaging" drive feeling, which the Mazda seems to do well in. The Crosstrek may not have as engaging of a drive, but some may prefer the other aspects it does well in. Things like headroom/shouldroom/legroom, visibility, larger fuel tank for greater driving range, superior AWD system and perhaps its around town driving feel. We recently bought a Forester and one thing that is never mentioned is the fantastic turning circle compared to many other vehicles in the class. Great for driving around town, parking lots, etc. It is so much easier to navigate in the city than every other vehicle we've had and it's not a feature I've seen mentioned in reviews (which may make sense since it's likely a thing you start to appreciate when you own it and drive it everyday). I'm also not a fan of torsion beam rear suspensions in vehicles that start to get this expensive. While Mazda seems to have done a good job with it, I still think and independent rear suspension is far superior, especially if driving in areas where uneven and broken pavement is the norm (may not be an issue in your area since your winters are much milder). I do see a decent amount of CX-30s on the roads around here, but Crosstreks are very popular here. None of this is to say the CX-30 shouldn't be on the list, it is a very good vehicle. Just saying I understand Zack's point and why he included the Trax. If I were buying in this class, I would have considered the Seltos, but some poor dealer experience with our Kia dealer changed that. A hybrid Corolla Cross would have been high on the list (we considered one earlier this year when we bought a new vehicle) but the inability to get one (long wait time) was unfortunate. We actually took a Crosstrek for a test drive, and while we liked it, we felt it was just a bit too small for what we wanted, so we ended up with a Forester Wilderness. Overall, I like the list and don't really disagree with any of the choices. I also like your "top 5" idea isn't of a more traditional 1-5 list. As you two have mentioned, these types of choices are often very subjective, so what ends up being number 1 for one person may not be the same for another (as everyone likely weights different features/characteristics differently for their own personal rating).
@@jeffer1101 Oh I totally agree with you, there are different needs and wants for each person buying a vehicle. Some may be quite happy with less power but a more spacious vehicle like the HR-V. The Crosstrek is one of our favourites in this class because of the fantastic AWD system and ground clearance. I see so many on the road. Glad to hear you are happy with your Forester, we had it last year to test drive when we got quite a bit of snow, it handled the roads like a champ and I like the openness of the cabin and the larger windows and doors. Subaru makes great vehicles, looking forward to driving the Crosstrek Wilderness in a few weeks.
@@andreaspencer9813 Aside from the wonderful content you two put out on a regular basis, you have great engagement with your viewers. Two replies in one day. I have officially won the internet today. :)
I just rented a Taos for a few weeks and I kinda like driving it but it was weird and glitchy. The starter often started having seizures and I would have to pull over and restart the car. The Gas and brake pedals were so close together that my walking shoes almost did not fit and I often caught the brake while pressing the gas, I had to drive in my sandals to have enough room. Fuel economy was great though.
I have to say my 2024 Kia Niro SX It's a fantastic small SUV/Hatch! Fuel economy is insanely good!!!! And if you hit sport mode Andrea would be in heaven doing burn outs with all the electric engine torque! Plus the interior is beautiful and has air cooled seats Harmon Kardon sound system power Hatch and looks beautiful inside! It's a 10/10 in my book! Superior to all listed. Much more bang for your buck.
Enjoy watching your shows!! I like the Chevy Trax body style and price! The size is larger than my current Nissan Rogue Sport, which I like as well!!!!!
I'd have to agree with Zack on this. The CX-30 just feels like the worst of both worlds to me between a sporty car and a utility car. I don't understand why someone would buy the CX-30 over the Mazda3 hatchback if the fun-factor is important to you. You get better ground clearance and a higher seating position, sure, but that comes at the expense of its handling. On top of that, the Mazda3 hatchback even has slightly better cargo capacity.
@@smok3sho587Of course it can. That's not the point I'm making. My point is that if you want something that handles well and is fun to drive, you may as well just buy a Mazda3. If you want a crossover for its utility, the CX-30 makes the least sense.
I watch you guys too much. I KNEW Andrea was gonna pick a Mazda😂
Lol I didn't even watch the video because of your comment haha
Yep 😂
Yep. Same here. And I appreciate that as well. I think she’s right.
Looking at all of these cars I don’t know how any of them are sub-compact. These are what compact used to be 10 years ago.
@@paulmccoy6431car manufacturers like them bigger and bigger
I would go with cx30. If I am choosing subcompact I am not worry about space. I prefer driving dynamic and have fun with it.
Love Mazda!
@@manbtm1 how is the cx-30 on gas? that is the one thing that worries me, is that it is not fuel-efficient enough
@@sakura-rc3ed its not bad, we average about 28 mpg, fair amount of highway driving also..
Got one with 0 regrets.
Andrea for the win! Mazda CX-30 all day everyday!!
One big omission from the Mazda…..in Canada the unlimited kilometer 3&5 year warranties.
Mazda for the win.
Crosstrek all the way for me. Had an Impreza first, then a 2018 Crosstrek and just purchased a 2024 Crosstrek (awaiting arrival).
Same here!!!! Loved my Impreza and now my Crosstrek!!!!!! 😊
Team Andrea with the CX30. Besides the power of the 2.5T engine, the Mazda looks drop-dead gorgeous in soul red. 😊
Hi Zack and Andrea, Great review! Bought my daughter a Kia Seltos SX for college graduation. So far, so good!
Awesome, great to hear!
How does the turbo drive and how’s the real life fuel economy?
I'm camp Andrea. I love the CX-30, but bought a CX-50 for the space. US based. Really enjoy you two's videos.
The Buick Envista also is amazing. Pure luxury ride. Very affordable.

Beautiful vehicle. Saw one on the street and was in awe
Thanks for the roundup! I'm looking at the Trax, Envista, and the Subaru- both the Crosstrek but also the Impreza. Still mad that my current Mazda rusted out so badly, so Mazda off my list for a while!
Impreza is a talented car.
GM is partial owned by SAIC. Don't buy GM government motors and China.
Great review! I can’t believe how expensive this class has become. I remember a time when the Hondas and Toyotas in this class topped out under $30K CAD. Now the occupy RAV4 and CRV price territory and the CRV and RAV sit in the previous X3 and GLC price range!! WHOA!
I know, it's crazy, everything has gone up but to be fair all vehicles have more features, technology and driver assist features.
I remember a time when my first new car cost $2500 CAD. It is so strange that prices only go up.
What do you think about chevy trailblazer? My dealership doesn't have trax inventory so they recommend trailblazer to me instead.
@@tarakelly8573 Thanks, I'm in Toronto so AWD is kinda a must.
Its one of the smaller compact suvs and a really great alternative.
in Europe, the mazda cx30 has a 2.0l engine base version 122 hp (90KW), has 150Hp and and 186hp options, which are also both 2.0L engines.
Mazda are so underrated. They drive so well, they have great shape. They are well made.
I absolutely love your channel funny and informative can’t beat that!
Crosstrek is the most sensible choice. No other vehicle ticks all boxes
Except that horrible looking and ridiculous big screen in the dash…worst of the bunch.
Again, I love Subaru as a brand in itself and if I had money to spare I’d just go for a Subaru and not care but I just feel
Like Subaru needs to do way better
A turbo version of the Crosstrek would be the best, but it's never going to happen.
turbo and stick Wilderness version, that would be dreamy!
I agree with Andrea on this one, goooo Mazda 😅
I just hate that i have to go all the way to limited to get the Powerliftgate... Same w/ kia SX but cheaper.
Zack criticizes cx30 turbo (optional) then immediately recommends a Trax which has only a turbo.
We were out the door at $25.7K (Washington State, USA)
If you're someone who is in the market and feeling, for whatever reason, priced out by the bigger names in the space when it comes to new, before you pivot toward used, I highly suggest you test drive the new Trax; you could end up with a brand new car that is a legitimate challenger to the big players in the subcompact crossover arena!
Don't be fooled by the low price tag. You will most definitely pay for it within the first few years.
same scenario. strict budget, paying cash. we went with the crosstrek. premium model with the smaller engine; 2.0 motor comes with a 17" wheel while the 2.5 comes with an 18 and i wanted a cheaper tire replacement cost in the future. out the door at $25,561. id love to hear how the 4 months since u posted this have fared. i liked the trax, but we wanted awd if possible

I'm camp Zack for the Trax. I bought one and i love it. I got the Activ metallic nitro yellow for the color.
I am in calgary as well. I have also ordered a base cx 30. How is ur daughter finding cx 30?

Southern California Driver here and I LOVE my Niro. If you don't need all-wheel drive, and if you mainly drive suburban streets and freeways it's an amazing vehicle.
Andrea: You are a lady of taste. Mazda all the way!
Zach: I'm sorry you like Chevy. Andrea is a real trooper putting up with you... :)
6k is a a lot you're right, not 12k. still that's like 9 after taxes and fees :o@@andreaspencer9813
Corolla cross hybrid, Rav4 Hybrid or Venza? Which has best value for money? Thank you for your detailed reviews!
I bought a Corolla cross hybrid in august- ordered in june-
Make sure you contact multiple dealers, I think that Toyota hybrids are more available than some dealerships would like us to know-
My Dad ordered one in September- it is due any day
Great list, including the honourable mentions!
Lol
@@blairbelch9807 I like the Trax a lot and I agree it offers great value, I just couldn't possibly leave the CX-30 off the list. It handles too well.
I am with Andrea on this as most of the time we don't fill the vehicle with 5 people, If so sub compact vehicles are not your option, also keep in mind the reliability and long term ownership cost on Mazda is very low compared to a Chevy
@charlscherian The Trax is made in South Korea, and the quality is similar to Mazda's.
I can feel you Andrea.. Mazda is no question especially the CX 30 turbo 👏👏👏
I always apricate Andrea's point of view but I have to go with Zack on prioritizing price and value first.
Saw a new trax the other day and the new styling is great. No all wheel drive model drove us away from it.
The Niro is a lovely car, the clever dash is brilliant
It's been over a month since I picked up my Crosstrek Wilderness and I couldn't be happier! This thing is a beast!
What did you trade in for? Doesn’t the cx30 come with 185 hp and 185 ftlbs torque which is fun?
Like the Trax, but FWD only is a problem in Quebec. What is the best choice with AWD and low fuel consumption? The hybrids are nice, but is there anything available with less than a year wait?
I'd think the Mazda CX-30 would be your best option, or the Crosstrek. Don't go Korean or Domestic - you'll either take a huge hit on depreciation, repair costs, or both!
Best all rounder: Subaru Crosstek
Best Fuel eficiency: Corolla Cross Hybrid
Best performance oriented: Mazda Cx30
CX 30 all the way. Trax is cheap to get in but you pay on the back end.
Just ordered CX-30, the space is enough for me and my girlfriend, and has good power!
Andrea is correct in picking the Mazda over the Chevy . Go Andrea 😊 L.S.
Great show guys. I’m team Subaru!
I enjoyed this review but I was wondering why no mention of the Nissan Kicks? Are they inferior to the others?
Love your videos!! Hello from Illinois! You should have millions of subscribers’
Love how you showcase that beauty B.C. Coastline. Subconscious Canuck tourist plug. Bravo.
I keep hearing praise that subcompact vehicles got bigger, but then aren't they no longer subcompacts and simply compact SUVs? What is the difference between a subcompact and compact other than size?
Yes subcompact vehicles are getting bigger but many compact SUVs are also getting bigger. The HR-V and CR-V are perfect examples of that.
My Kia Seltos SX in Pluton Blue is arriving in January! Happy New Year to me!
2:40 doggo! Great vid guys!
HRv is WAYYY TOO SLOW! I couldnt believe it. CX30 is MY Pick but I agree with Zach- Mazda needs to GET with it on Hybrids! (Im still Team Mazda haha)
They’re working with Toyota if I’m not mistaken and I can’t imagine it’d be too much longer now.
Great choice! You won't be disappointed 🙂
I agree with Andrea. GM is known to have year one problems and already showing them. I'd rather have a smile on my face than spend it looking at my bank balance...drain at the dealer service center
Thank you for the reviews. I have decided to get the Corolla Cross 👍
Are Canadians still able to take advantage of Car Cost Canada, with your coupon code???

@@jeffer1101 lol! Thank you, enjoy the weekend.
Zach nail it, the price point of the trac is great and you get a attractive SUV
Enjoy watching your shows!! I like the Chevy Trax body style and price! The size is larger than my current Nissan Rogue Sport, which I like as well!!!!!
Trax resale is going to be crap.
Mazda CX30! Leading feature of the Trax is roadside assistance.
😂😂😂
I'd have to agree with Zack on this. The CX-30 just feels like the worst of both worlds to me between a sporty car and a utility car. I don't understand why someone would buy the CX-30 over the Mazda3 hatchback if the fun-factor is important to you. You get better ground clearance and a higher seating position, sure, but that comes at the expense of its handling. On top of that, the Mazda3 hatchback even has slightly better cargo capacity.
The cx 30.can still out handle anything on this list
@@smok3sho587Of course it can. That's not the point I'm making. My point is that if you want something that handles well and is fun to drive, you may as well just buy a Mazda3. If you want a crossover for its utility, the CX-30 makes the least sense.
