    Mazda CX 5 signature turbo is by far the best choice. I drove all the ones you Reviewed. There’s no comparison in refinement, fit and finish of the interior, interiors by far the quietest. Turbo engine quick/ powerful and fun to drive. Just purchased a 2023 signature!!

    As someone who wouldn't buy a hybrid or CVT-containing vehicle on a bet, I appreciate the "gas-only" approach to this review. For me, like Andrea, there is only one winner here and that's the Mazda CX-5. I've owned a few luxury compact SUVs in my day, but it's getting harder and harder to justify their $10--15K premium over this Mazda. Great review as always, you two!!

      Couldn't agree more. I hated the CVT on my Altima and swore I'd never buy another. The CX-5 turbo drivetrain is so smooth and predictable with just the right kind of growl. I was going to buy my first luxury SUV for my retirement but as you said, the CX-5 is much less expensive and the line between it and more expensive models gets very blurry.

    I own a 21 Forester Sport and it's a fantastic vehicle.
    PROS:
    Amazing in the snow - sure-footed but allows you to have some fun getting the tail out - even with all-weather tires it handles deep snow very nicely. Comfort and visibility are great. Safety features are solid and mostly unobtrusive. It does get great mileage if you're not lead-footed. The big, not-quite panoramic sunroof that opens ALL THE WAY. It's on-road and offroad manners and ride are superb and steering is quick and light, if a little numb. And, unlike some, I do think it's a very handsome vehicle, it's sculpted, long snout and chunky 'wing' on the tailgate give it a great look. While the CVT does take a little getting used to, it's a fantastic transmission that seems to always know where to be, except sometimes at very-low speeds - I wish it would actually hold in it's power-band when accelerating rather than simulating shifts - it would likely be quicker. And, while it does get a little loud at higher revs, I find the sound more pleasing than that of the RAV4 which seems to be straining more. The Harmon Kardon 9 speaker stereo is very nice. Remote start via an app on your phone is a nice bonus if you opt for it - though being able to turn on the AC no matter what temp you set would be a nice addition.
    CONS:
    It could use a little more power, but I never feel like it's really lacking. The auto-stop start defaulting to ON each time you start the car is annoying, though can easily be fixed with a plug and play part for about 100 bucks. The bin in front of the shifter is too small for larger phones, which is an issue if you use the wired Android Auto or Car Play - I bought a small pocket that sticks to the side of the console to slip my phone into. A heated steering wheel would be nice.

    Another nice review guys. You stated that the CX5 warranty was 3 years and 60,000 kms. My 2021 CX5 ( and every Mazda sold in Canada since 2015 ) has a warranty of unlimited kilometers for 3 years bumper to bumper and 5 years unlimited kilometers for Powertrain warranty. Their confidence in offering an unlimited km warranty ( which no other manufacturer in Canada does ) must mean they have built a quality product. So far in my opinion , I agree.

    Its really amazing how CX-5 still on the top of the list, given its age. Mazda's technology, engineering and dynamic charm have really upped the ante when it came out. CX-50 continues this trend. If I have to get a compact SUV, CX-5/50 2.5T are definitely the ones to choose between in Mazda showroom. I am a Honda fans. But CR-V doesn't seem to go far enough to win my vote.

      Mazdas have great steering and speakers, and a lot of options for the mid-level model. The newest 6 speed automatic transmission works well and is reliable. You will not get great gas mileage, and the direct injection might need the intake valves walnut shell blasted eventually, especially if you do not use top tier cleaner gasoline.

    I had a Rav 4WD Limited and when I went to replace my 2011 Rav, I looked at another Rav and a Venza. The Rav was $700 more a year in insurance premiums and the Venza was $1K more. Both vehicles had horrible views and blind spots in the rear.
    My wife has an Outback and Subaru is superior with its AWD system.
    I ultimately chose the Forester Touring. The insurance went up only $300 a year and after dropping my 11 Rav, my insurance actually went down.
    We live in a very mountainous area of north central WA state where we get 5-6 feet of snow every winter.
    The Xmode in the Subaru costs thousands more in a Rav because you’ll have to get the TRD trim.
    If you properly maintain your Subie they’ll last for 300K+ miles.
    When I’m on the highway and heading into Wenatchee with snow covering the highway, Subaru’s are in the fast lane passing everyone else.
    The traction on all road conditions is wonderful.
    I would recommend a Forester, Outback or Crosstrek to anyone who lives in deep snowy areas.

    Great review. Keep up the good work. I have to admit I am a Honda or Toyota guy. I moved to Central Ontario in 2018 from the GTA. I knew I was going to be travelling back and forth quite a bit so I wanted a compact suv. I leased a 2018 Honda CRV as the previous generation RAV4 was underpowered with 160hp and getting long in the tooth. Wouldn’t even consider it. I was very happy with the CRV size and fuel mileage. Before the lease was up the dealer called me and asked if I wanted a 2021 model for a payment about $90 less and nothing down. It was September. I went to try the new (in 2019) RAV4 but didn’t like the interior. Zack described it well, “feels industrial”! For that reason and the great price I took the 2021 CRV and am very happy with it. On the hiway I checked it and it got 37mpg, imperial gallons. I didn’t believe it. Checked it 3 times. Same result. Add some in town driving and that number is just over 30 but very good for a 4 wheel drive vehicle that size. Also resale and reliability of Honda and Toyota vehicles can’t be beat.

    This is a better way of doing a "top 5" since different people prioritize different things. Aside from the availability issue, there really isn't a reason to not consider the hybrid option if available. In the case of the RAV4, it's only an extra $2000 and it uses almost half the fuel. You'll likely get that $2000 in savings at the pumps in a couple of years. Other than that, I don't really disagree with any of your picks, although I would liked to have seen the new Rogue in there too. I know it's got a new engine, but Kia/Hyundai engines have been catching on fire and they're in everyone's list too. While the RAV4 may have a "utilitarian" look to the interior, it is done so on purpose. That interior will hold up to regular people/family use quite will. After 5 years of use, everything will still look the same and work. The same can't be said about "piano black" plastic, they looks dirty and gets scratched in a week.

    • @Antiorganizer
      @Antiorganizer Год назад

      +1 on the Rogue! It's underappreciated. In Canada, in order to get the VC Turbo engine though, you're forced to go for the SV model at least, which costs a bit more - but it has that panoramic sunroof - PLUS, and this is a big one imo, a VIN that starts with J, meaning, it's made in Japan, unlike the other models which are made in America. America is riddled with quality control issues.
      And that brings us to Kia, and Hyundai. I do not feel they deserve our business. The amount of engine problems with that is through the roof. Many dealers replace 200-400 engines per year. Massive lawsuits, class action settlements, extended warranties, long waiting lists to see engine replaced, and dealers try to get out of their obligation by scrutinizing oil change records. It's stressful beyond comprehension. Yes they have a long warranty, but what good is that if your car is gone for months on end? Googling around for engine problems, it isn't even limited to their Theta engines either! Lots of other engine trouble with their other engines too. How do we know the newest engines do not have this trouble? Also, that really big engine problem? It lasted from 2011 to 2018. That's like 8 years of faulty engines coming out of that factory in Alabama.
      So yeah, when I see two Rogues, one made in America, and the next made in Japan, pick the Japan one.

      You better do that math for $2000 hybrid savings. It's going to take a lot longer than "a couple years" to make up that difference and it's also going to depend if you don't mostly highway (35mpg vs 32mpg) or city driving (28mpg vs 34mpg). Not even close to half. Most people will never make up that $2000 difference in gas.

    • @Antiorganizer
      @Antiorganizer Год назад +1

      @@nosbigekim I'm seeing much larger price differences to get a hybrid than $2k. Here in Canada at least. It's more like 5 to 10 grand difference (CDN).
      By the time it might break even, you get at the point where the battery is old enough where trading in become a problem.

Not sure why you think it’s a 2010 dashboard, that interior gets tons of praise. And the quality is way ahead of ford. But hey money doesn’t buy class.

    I bought a 2023 Subaru Forester Limited about 2-1/2 months ago. Long story short, I was in an accident back in September, and my car at the time (2016 Subaru Impreza wagon) was deemed totaled. A guy claimed his steering jammed, causing him to cross the yellow line and hit my car at about 25 mph. We both walked away from the accident without injury. I just had a minor scratch, and a sore back and neck for a couple days. Given how well the Impreza protected me, I decided I wanted another Subaru, but something bigger, which is why I went with the Forester. I looked at the Crosstrek, but felt the outward visibility was better in the Forester.

    Another great top-5 review, Andrea and Zack, thank you! Interestingly, when I was in the market for a new car a few months and decided on an SUV, I went with the Forester over the other 2 that I liked most, the RAV4 and Tuscon. And, my decision was based on all of the strengths that you two had highlighted in your review of the Forester PLUS based on my very positive experience of owning a 1984 Subaru Hatchback with its underpowered 1600cc engine but which got up to 42 MPG highway, its 4-speed transmission, reliability, excellent FWD performance even in winter skiing weather in So. and No. California mountains, and because of Subaru's long-time sponsorship of the U.S. Ski Team. So, my Forester purchase was also an emotional one, and based on what I see in Forester social media groups, both the logical and emotional reasons for buying/owning a Forester are extremely high, with so many personal accounts of owning Foresters for over 200,000 AND 300,000 miles, and of many enthusiasts' modifications of their Foresters to make them even more off-road capable.

    I'm going with the Kia Sportage. I just like how "unique" it looks. Aesthetics aside, the factors that caught my interest is that it is a AT and has a traditional transmission also, it has sufficient power even for the base model.
    The Rav-4 is definitely a big YES...let's face it, it's a TOYOTA!
    I was wondering why the CX-50 wasn't included.
    Also, I love the other brand choices and sorry, but not sorry...but I'm definitely removing the Honda CRV and the Subaru FORESTER (CVT 🤢) on this list.

    The only two I would consider buying on that list are the CX-5 and the RAV4 because they have regular autos and naturally aspirated engines (the Sportage does too, but I can't get past the offbeat looks or the inferior reputation for reliability/longevity of Kia compared to Mazda/Toyota, especially in light of the massive recent recalls). One note about the RAV4's engine noise; my understanding is that it's a byproduct of that engine's design that combines direct and port fuel injection, which gets the fuel economy advantage of the former and the carbon buildup fighting properties of the latter. I think that's worth the little bit of extra noise it generates, and only during hard acceleration (it's about as quiet as the average compact SUV otherwise). Thanks for the useful, informative comparison.

      I just rented a Rav4 for a 5 day road trip. It was ok, the quality is obviously there. The interior was just ok, not bad, not great. Nice amount of space. Cabin noise was a bit louder than I expected at highway speeds and I can confirm the loud engine when accelerating. Performance was adequate but disappointing compared to the Mazda 3 I use as a daily driver. My wife's 2020 Honda CR-V is a bit quicker or at least feels that way. I wouldn't be thrilled to own this vehicle but it would serve its purpose. I might consider the hybrid.

      I agree. I have a 2021 RAV4 XLE Premium gas version. The only time it's noisy is when you exhilarate with a cold engine. Once it warms up, it is no noiser (city driving or passing on the highway) and compares favourably with any other vehicle in this class!!!

    • @johnmininger7472
      @johnmininger7472 Год назад

      @ron ripley - I don't know about that. My recent rental was a 2021. Same engine is used in all their gas only models. I found it noisy and underwhelming, no matter which mode I put it in. My wife, who knows nothing about cars and drives a CR-V as her daily even commented on the noise level. The engine is quiet under normal conditions but was quite noisy navigating Atlanta traffic, particularly when passing. I wanted to love the car, it was on my short list for a new car so I was glad to have the opportunity to take one on a road trip ... just not completely sold on it after that. Comfortable, looks good, lots of room, wife thought the dual climate control worked very well, solid quality, gas mileage was very good with a lot of highway and city driving ... it has some positives, for sure.

    Great video as always! Straight and to the point. As for my personal choices among these 5, I would say the Subaru Forester is up there near the top, followed by the Kia. The things I don't like about the Subaru are it's Plain Jane looks which IMO are very out of date, as well as the lack of a turbo engine option. The Kia has a lot going for it, but the styling is maybe too "exciting" with all those angles and funky front end. The Rav 4's styling reminds me of a military-style cap, although the fuel economy is great. I'm not too thrilled with the Honda or Mazda options, but I'm sure they are fine options. Thanks again for another great video!

    Love you guys. This is the must see segments. Here is my opinion on the top 5. I had 2 Forester, 2018 and 2020. I love the Forester as you mentioned the size of the car in height and visibility is the best. The cargo is the best in storage as I use it often. My least I like on your too 5 is the RAV4 as I mentioned there is lots of zonks it has. The seats I think is not comfortable I felt like I am sitting on a big truck or something. I am not a fan on Mazda. This CX5 I test drive is the smallest and I felt like I want choke out of air. It is tight and uncomfortable for a fat guy like me. My second car was the CRV. I had the 2005 and back then was the most sought after and everyone wants a CRV but today it is not a popular car. I would not buy it. My opinion is the Sportage looks interesting. I might look into it. Sucks no hybrid and I don’t know if this consider a most stolen car. So in the future I want to get a Hylander but I am not sure if I want to spend $60k on this car. I delivery a lot and using this nice car for deliveries is a waste. So I might look into another Forester or a Sportage for a good price. I guess I will never be able to own a RX350 for my personal car as I use my own car for work.

The top two in my list were Subaru Forester and Honda CRV, and my final choice is Subaru Forester. After driving it for 10 years, I confirm that I made the right choice. Considering the high price for a new car in auto market now, I would keep driving my Forester for a few more years. Hello from California. Great video. Many thanks. I am looking for something similar, but more in the luxury category. What I am looking for I guess is a challenge. I want an SUV that has some class, refinement, both interior and exterior (very little to no black plastic exterior trim). Either gas or hybrid, but no EV. The EV market has a LONG WAY TO GO in supporting drivers who make long drives outside of urban areas. The charging-station situation is 10 years away from being more "normal". I need something that works well on long freeway driving AND able to perform some level of off-road, as I sometimes have to drive on rough gravel / dirt / muddy / steep road to visit one of my daughters. Yet I don't want a robust heavy-duty SUV. BUT, also need to have plenty of interior width in the 2nd row of seats to comfortably seat 3 adults. And don't want a 3-row car. So, I guess I am somewhat picky.

    Forester for me but I'm in Vermont so I am biased. Basically if you live where it snows often and you want peace of mind that you will not go off the road, then it's forester all the way.
    If I lived somewhere that gets light snow, I would probably go with a rav4 for reliability, and cx5 as a runner up.
    Though I am disappointed that to get many common features on a rav you need to go a few packages higher than base. Like AWD... or heated seats...
    That's why I like forester. Subaru just doesn't have the same reliability reputation as Toyota but in all fairness no one does

    Thank you for the video choice of cars I think some of them are very reliable and some of them on this list are very questionable. Anyways it gives you an idea of price points I love how you put what the car cost the most important things are mainly there so thanks for your videos.😊

    Just bought a KIA Sportage X-Line. Really great ride and sharp looking car. A bit short on power (won't win any races, but it goes when needed) and gas mileage, but the features more then make up for it. A little leery on KIA (cause I just don't know too much about them), but got some good responses from some people that own one. We shall see.

    Agree with the list. In a top ten list would you include the Outback, the VW Tiguan (sp), Buick encore, and Chevy Traverse.

    The Mazda CX-5 is my top choice. I own a 2019 CX-5 Signature and am very happy with it. My second choice is the new Honda CR-V. To stay competitive MAZDA needs to get a hybrid version of the CX-5/CX-50 out ASAP!

    I found the seats too firm for the Mazda CX-5, if it wasn't for that it would be a buy.

    • @jeffruebens8355
      @jeffruebens8355 Год назад +2

      The seats do seem firm at first in the CX-5s, but they are comfortable for a long trip. The back seats are a little small, and I barely fit in the driver seat at 5 feet 11 inches tall. We have 3 CX-5s. Less money than a similar RAV4, and the Tucson and Sportage might be less reliable even with a long warranty that many say they struggle with dealer shop staff over. I might consider buying a used Ford Maverick hybrid truck in a few years, from the videos I would likely just upgrade the speakers.

    I believe the VW Tiguan deserves a closer look. The engine has higher torque, 2 litre. vs. 1.5 competitor, 8 speed automatic transmission, decent gas mileage, the SE offers front heated seats, Apple Car Play, large front screen display, Auto start, Roomy rear seat, automatic lift gate, rear and front cameras, nice size cargo area, panoramic sun roof and 19” Alloy wheels,and lane merge assist.

    Nowadays, its not just the driving characteristics, the exterior design and the interior comfort...the way the infotainment system works is also important. 2020 CX5 is very slow to connect. My wife already wants to get rid of hers because of this issue
