Anthony, I understand you consider yourself a “Pretty Girl” as well, but can you do an actual review of the album?
You have to listen to Zinnias like 20 times but it clicks eventually and it’s such a fucking good song. The guitar loop has been stuck in my head all week.

This is a sound I could see her going towards later, but I definitely didn't expect it this early. Seemed like there was still room to do one more album of what she was doing.
I could see that. It feels weird to say but the orchestral quality on it feels a bit premature. Not that you can't include more instruments in your music as a younger artist. Maybe it just feels a bit referential to other musicians and genres and less personal. Sometimes this happens to medium sized singer songwriters, they get hooked up with the music industry and solid producers and some of that original (or potential) character is lost in favor of an overly mentored sound.
AOTY for me. I know that's a bold statement, but for me this is everything i wanted from a Clairo record, hell everything I wanted from a record full stop.
The amount of times that beautifuly magic instrumentation completely defied the expectations i had for a song were too many times to count, and i loved it. And of course Claire using her own vulnerability as the forefront of every part of this record really makes you feel like this is a very honest, bold, beautiful, important piece of art. Her music really has really blossomed and her growth as an artist really shows. It takes real talent to draw beauty from really dark themes, such as the ones that this album talks about.
I understand that this record might be too quiet or too slow for some people, and that's okay, but for me that i respond really positively to a more subtle style of music this was fantastic. I cannot stress how much I love this record.

The songs are good, the instrumentation is good its just that i wish Clairo put any power into her vocals whatsoever. it was the one thing consistently pulling me out of the record.
I think that's all she has to offer. I don't get the impression she's a great vocalist. Pretty good songwriter, though
@@stopmikeandjim3196 her live performances beg to differ! while it's not for everyone, i definitely think her soft vocal delivery on sling was intentional. i personally was a huge fan of it but i can understand how you might not dig it
@@liaarakal2130 I've seen her live twice. Her vocals were pretty much identical to how she sounds on her records. She just doesn't have much range as a vocalist. Lots of low, breathy head voice without much chest support, and either incapable or unwilling to belt at all. At least she sings in key and on pitch. Thankfully she's a much better songwriter than vocalist
I def feel like a freak because I was listening to Amoeba on repeat the other day while wondering when Anthony was going to upload this review.. so I could confirm my suspicion that he would give it a light 7.

Probably one of the best albums of the year for me. Zinnias is my only skip but the rest of the album is just pure bliss. Harbor is such a devastatingly beautiful song too

10/10 in 2024 still. Stands above Immunity and Charm personally. It's her Pinkerton. For those who let it slip by, it'll grow. It'll be her #1 in 20 years.
It’s just so PRETTY. I’d give it a light eight. Wade or at least Management belongs in best tracks. I didn’t find her vocals lacking all that much on the final track.

I was definitely expecting something similar to immunity from this record but when the pandemic happened it really changed a lot of peoples creative aspects including mine and everyone chose to write records with more of a deeper meaning because this pandemic has tailored everyone’s imaginations like never before and for the success of Cairo’s viral TikTok hit “ Sofia “ which is actually a really good song it was very risky for her to release this record instead of following it up with another hit she chose to write sling because she doesn’t wanna just be looked as a mediocre bedroom pop artist she just wants to be looked at and respected as a artist like much respected artist like lorde or Taylor Swift who’s most respected for their lyrics and songwriting . Listen to sling with a open mind not expecting your typical Clairo sound , everything after diary 001 is heavy in production and very much more creative than her older work and this record is a story book not just a regular album . Clairo has proved herself as an artist with this record and her songwriting and went from bedroom pop artist to alternate princess and I am very excited to hear what she has in store for the future

Sling is okay but am I the only one who prefers immunity?
I appreciate her artistic growth and some tracks are beautiful but I also prefer Immunity. The music had guts and sonic interest. I feel like these new songs are so understated and fragile they might break apart in my headphones.
I think I prefer sling because it feels a lot more personal and a lot more like her going in whatever direction she wants while immunity just feels a tad more generic
There both pretty solid in my opinion :) just different, I prefer them for different moods

I gotta respect everyone’s opinion but 0:33 threw me off because immunity was one of the best alternative pop albums of 2019 and was a pretty critically acclaimed record so I’m scared for the rest of this review

Thank goodness Anthony uploaded this video in the same hour that I listened to this album for the first time. I was terrified that I'd need to form my own opinion.
I really liked this album from first listen! It's a departure from her bedroom pop days but I think it's great!! The songs are very strong and it just transports me to a wonderful place everytime I listen!! Love love it!!
I wish more indie rock was implemented, but overall a good 8-9
