  • First off, a massive thanks to Smartwings for providing the motorized shades used to make this video. It gave me the perfect opportunity to do a video that I had on my list for a long time, which is adding an unsupported zigbee device to zigbee2mqtt.
    So the purpose of this video is two fold.
    First I want to get you familiar with the motorized roller shades from Smartwings, because they are an off-the-shelf, fully customizable roller shade option that can integration with Home Assistant locally. No cloud services needed.
    Second I want to show you how to add device support to zigbee2mqtt when you run across an unsupported device because it may be easier than you think.
    You can find out more about the Smartwings line of motorized shades and blinds at bit.ly/3AyHTbg

    wow... i think smartwings really owes you one for providing an example of how to get it working with zigbee2mqtt. thanks for focusing on a local control option and helping to educate the public!

    Just what I was looking for. I just bought a batch of device that I have had success with, but from a different vendor. None are supported. I tried the online instructions, but couldn't connect the dots. Now I feel like I have a fighting chance. Thanks.

    Hi Jeff
    Where comes the fromZigbee and toZigbee lines coming frome?
    Those are not in the ikea.ts file.
    How do you get the text beneath "configure"
    I'm in the proces to make some converters myself, but that part i'm missing.
    Thanks in advance!

    The "normal" price for smart shades (if you paid for them to be installed, and if they were from a large name brand) would be $500 to $1,500 PER SHADE. Not even joking. At $150 to $175 per shade, these are a steal! (2x to 3x more per shade is the average pricing for smart shades if you Google on the subject.)
    Thank you for confirming these will work with Zigbee2MQTT! I see these shades have official Zigbee2MQTT support now!

    Glad I watched you video, the instructions said to put the .js file beside the configutation.yaml, never said there was a configuration.yaml in the zigbee folder, need icepack for forehead... Also I was missing the data_path statement in the z2m configuration file. I am doing this to revers the state in my blinds now that the shade is supported.

      How does one put a file next to another file? Its nonsense to me. Also I see no file manager in the HA OS, so how am I supposed to access the files??

    Can I assume that you can stop and leave them half way down, or do the only go full up or full down?

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад

      Yes. Both using the remote. Or if you are using Home Assistant or one of the other zigbee options you can stop the shade at any point and then resume or start in the opposite direction.

    When you do move, are you planning on doing a video on how you transported your smart home things? Which devices you leave behind versus which ones you take?

    • @SlackerLabs

      Yes. That was actually one of the things I thought of when we started talking moving. This could fuel at least a couple of videos. Haha

      @@SlackerLabs as I'm digging deeper into devices and automations I think about it a lot. I don't want to be running around the house resetting devices right before the house sells.

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  2 года назад

      @@JoeDzado Yeah, I once thought I would just sell it all with the house. Any smart tech with a password just set it all up with a generic email and password I could hand over to the new owners. But I also think about all those switches I could reuse. haha

      @@SlackerLabs Years ago, we left an Insteon system as part of the home we sold. It probably just got trashed or unused. This was two decades ago. Maybe it's different now. But I kind of doubt they are adding anything to the house's value unless the home buyer realizes they are worth something. I'd take your smart things out of any house you move out of, unless the buyer is begging for them to stay when they look at the house. (Similar to if they beg to let items like a frige stay.)

    Which hub do you suggest?

    • @SlackerLabs
      @SlackerLabs  Месяц назад

      Oh I got suggestions. hahah. But really I think it comes down to what you want out fo your smart home and more importantly what you are willing to give up to get it.
      Want something easy to get started the following will get you there. Generally though these do not have good automation support. Meant more to be controlled with voice or via an app on your phone.
      - Smartthings. Pros: easy to setup, lots of device support (Zigbee, Zwave, Wifi). Cons: not easy to create specialized solutions. Automations are simple
      - Aqara. Pros: Easy to setup. Devices are Wifi and Zigbee based. Matter support making it easy to add these devices to other platforms. Cons: automations are simple. No Zwave option. Relies on the cloud.
      - Switchbot: Pros: Matter support and some unique devices. Cons: Limited device compatibility, and some rely on bluetooth.
      - Apple home: Pros: Best Matter Device support right now. Easy to setup and manage. Devices are local. Cons: Devices are limited. No Zigbee or Zwave option. Expensive hub, and HomeKit devices usually have a premium price.
      Want Voice Control - Amazon or google or even Apple. As platforms these are pretty limited. But they are voice first. So if you envision yourself walking around telling your house to turn on and off devices these are the platforms. Your ability to automate will be severely limited. Not sure if Amazon charges for this functionality in the future so that might be an issue. Device support for amazon is probably your best bet the best. Then google. The biggest con is you are tied to the cloud services. Amazon does have zigbee radios in a lot of their hubs/speakers but most will connect via an app and in my experience the devices app is going to have more functionality. And your house may be impacted by outages.
      After that the options have a lot of added costs. The biggest cost: your time. But they offer the most complete and customizable options today. If you want to focus on the best automation platforms this is the list to choose from. These also focus on local first options. They may leverage cloud services for some functionality but if those services go down your smart home will still work.
      Homey pro: Pros: Off the shelf hub with built in support for Zwave, zigbee, wifi, 433 MHz, matter, and ir devices. automation editor looks like nodeRed so if you like the visual workflow of building automations this might be the best option. And lots of ability to customize software. Cons: Hub is expensive. Lots of ability to customize and will require time learning the platform. Voice control may hard to setup
      Habitat: Pros: Off the shelf hub, with built in support wave, zigbee, wifi, matter devices. Lots of ability to customize, so possible to build specialized solutions. Voice control possible through Amazon or google. Cons: Lots of complexity. Automation editor is called Rule Machine and it will take learning the syntax and or grabbing other's automations.
      Home Assistant. This is my current choice, and the best one I think. Also the one I kow the most about. Pros. It's a choose your own adventure. There are off the shelf hubs to get your started. Or you can just use an old computer or Raspberry Pi. Support for Zigbee, Zwave, Wifi, Matter, 433mhz, and more. Can be competely local with voice control, or you could leverage cloud services to assist. Everything is integration based, so you can choose which features you want active. Runs well on a RPi4 with very little resource use. Basic smart home functionality can all be done from the UI and can be up and running with an off the shelf hub. Can make your own devices and entities using from multiple devices so you are not limited by the devices you buy. Cons: Will require manually editing YAML config files from time to time for complex setup or automations. Troubleshooting issues can be a challenge. Lots of options that all do the same thing so choosing a path isn't always clear. So you will need to know what you want in order to evaluate the best path.
