Blaupunkt/Velocity in the early 2000's seemed to have pretty good overall vision and nice performance/features to price -ratio. Got a Bremen MP74 head unit that I found from a thrift store for like 5 or 10 euros. It had a failed front panel mechanism. When I came back home with it, I noticed a single SMD -component just dangling around at the very edge of the PCB. Managed to solder it back on and fix the mechanism. I guess it has been in my car for about 10 years now.
I guess it's near the highest end head units that Blaupunkt made. I got no experience from the newer (last known good?) models.
      Few gripes:
-Menu structure is a bit iffy because it doesn't have a clear back/return option, as it mostly just goes back to the main screen
-Volume adjustment has some really big jumps at certain levels, even with a scale of 0-50
-AUX in needs some serious level and many portable devices can't be played loud
-Hissing issues and a bit low voltage on pre-outs
-The volume knob is a bit rough to turn with it's straight edge and hard plastic, though it won't turn to icky stuff like many rubberized things out there
-Blue led behind power/mute button is a bit irritating at times
-CD eject doesn't push the disc out as much as I'd like
-If you insert the CD a bit too late, the front panel will try to close itself when the CD is still loading and will cause a jam or at least scratches on the CD
      -
Just stumbled upon a Blaupunkt MP 68A, an 8-channel DSP amplifier with all kinds of connectivity. It has some Audison vibes (with the DRC) and it looks way too high quality to be a "modern Blaupunkt", seeing what they've been marketing lately. Looks like it was made for Far East markets in 2018 or so. Cool concept, as it's spec'd at 8 x 80W 4 ohms and it has one pair of extra line outputs though they seem to be shared with the amp channels 7/8.

It's amazing what you can do on a budget these days. We were spending so much back in the 90's and into the early aughts compared to today. $625 in today's money would get you so much more than we got back then. Great review, sir! Can't believe that iMac styling was so pervasive then. haha. I had my USAmps 700T repaired back in 2006ish, and my guy noted back then it was pretty rough to get your hands on the chip, too. Can't imagine what you'd have to do these days.

Back in 2010-2012 or so there was a very popular little Lepai (LP-2020 A+) branded amp (home audio) sold through parts express that used a tripath chip. It was 25 watts per channel but home audio enthusiasts loved it for its unique audio characteristics that they attributed to the tripath chip. I bought 3 back in the day and still use them daily. Does anyone remember these and what is the similarities in the tripath chips? To this day I see these Lepai’s are sought after as the chip availability ran out years ago.

Blaupunkt was always my favorite lesser known/not as common car audio brand. They made so much wild stuff. DVC 6x9 coaxials. Translucent speakers. And their head units were really great looking with that oversized, less bezel design. They were such a cool company. Shame they're no longer the same today.

    • @donaldhastyjr4066

@@Cronson82 So true! I had those 6x9 you spoke of, and those things got down for some 6x9s!! I had a couple dvc 10s that came in that colorful shipping box they had, and their amps were badass to me because of the bbe that they used. It is very very sad to see so many great companies that were on top of the game then, junk now!

Great review on a very unique amp! At the time, the iMac - similar in appearance - was popular and it was unheard of to have a plastic shell on a car amp, since traditional AB Amps ran so hot. This was very cool at the time.
Did you happen to run the Flir on the amp? Did it get 🔥 at all? Real shame about that second channel.
Note also that Tripath was not Texas Instruments back then. TI bought their technology out after the company failed. Several generations later, Tripath technology is used in something like 90% to 95% of new amplifiers.
Too bad about Tripath. A great product doesn't guarantee success.
Again, awesome vid. I've wondered about 🔵this amp🔵 for over two decades!

I have 3 of the Blaupunkt amps, new old stock, I bought them quite a while ago. PA2150s and PA4100. The project I wanted to use them in never got to completion so I have them sitting on a shelf somewhere. I had 4 of the amps and as you mentioned, they do have problems that arise, the 1 that failed, I never could determine what happened. But what's great about the amps is if you have a stock electrical system or a smaller alternator (read 1.5L - 2.0L engines) and want decent power without killing your electrical system. These amps give a lot of power for their size. I think ICEPower and the like carried the concepts further, essentially the Tripath are variable frequency Class-D designs so they could operate across 20-20Khz as opposed to the tradition Class D of the time which were geared for subwoofer amps.

I also took the power connecter and pulled out the screw and little piece of metal and soldered 6 ga welding ofc wire to the connecter and it worked alot better did the same to the speaker terminal wuth 12 ga. Would love to see a similar amp on the market today. Similar in terms of shape and size. The single din mounting would be useful in my car. A style of mounting is being phased out in newer cars but I'm surprised it didn't catch on more before. With today's component size and the ability to shove a lot of power into a small space... Just ended up being the wrong decade

I was hoping for a SQ test because that's where I had major issues w a PA4100 I had back in the day. It was the worst sounding amp of any kind I'd heard, and exchanging it didn't help. And that 2nd one failed under warranty and that 3rd one also wasn't any better. I know Tripaths can sound good; I had a Topping TP30 Tripath mini desktop amp that sounded great, so I assume it was a Blaupunkt problem or with that early Tripath chip.

I would like to see you use the recommended power and ground terminals as suggested by the manufacturer as they seemed to have specked the amplifier at that gauge cable. Then for comparison purposes, you can try testing with your oversize cable to see whether it would make a significant difference in performance. If not, then I would suggest people use the recommended gauge cable from the manufacturer as the increase in wire size brings about little to no performance gain as far as short cable runs are concerned.

The speaker output terminal has five connectors. The two on the left and right are for the speakers and the middle one is the remote turn on.

Sad, how far Blaupunkt has fallen in such a short period of time. Or course, a LOT of the standards of the 80s-90s have become the laughing stocks of the game. Soundstream is another one, that used to be the cream of the crop. Now? Yeah….no.

What jew talkn about Willis ton ?
I pity da fu hu dont like class T amps
Blaupunkt was a heavy hitter back in the 80's-90's oem in many German car brands with amazing SQ head units & features
Their after market single dins were named after popular cities
I use to go recycling at junk yards for Blaupunkt head units & cd changers
Its amazing what you can fit in cargo pants pockets 😬😁

This amp seems to be a smattering of poorly executed good ideas.
