I've had a lot of mixed thoughts about this adaptation and everything you said is exactly what I'm thinking. I really like the idea of live action adaptations, but I think everything that's been made has been for popular, well-loved movies where the originals have little to no flaws. I think Hollywood should make adaptations of movies that didn't perform well with the goal of making the story better. How to Train Your Dragon is perfect the way it is. There's no point in telling the story again.

I don't think we need a remake, the animated versions were excellant and at the end of the day, if they make changes to the story now will upset a lot of people who already love these films. The only way I may have been interested in seeing a 'remake' if they decided to actually go off the dragins in the books as there are meant to be differences. Dont think I'd bother with watching these

In a similar vain to you, I thought the trailer "looked" great and at the same time it made me want to watch the original again. The change to Astrid is hollow given the literally everything else is the exact same from the original. It feels like a lot of passion was put into this but lacks a driving force to build genuine hype aside from "It's that one bit from the movie!"

the actress already played a race swapped character the live action adaptation of the last of us and did good in her role, because both her role in the last of us and in how to train your dragon don't depend on her looking the same. it's not hollow, they just picked a black person, another example Perry White and Nick Fury in live action are black, but their original characters are white, its not an issue of race because race never mattered with the character's original versions

This move did NOT need to be made again. It was already perfect. They could have revamped it with updated CGI to blend with movies 1 & 2 better, but to do a live action remake (AND changing the characters up) No. Not needed. They could have made a movie of the HTTYD game School of Dragons, having all new characters, and made that live action... but nooooo.

What I find a little strange about the whole nico parker thing is that they could have just given her blonde hair because other than the hair she kinda looks like astrid in the face. She has similar enough facial features. But no it seems like they wanted to make a point of it or something by giving her brown hair that specifically contradicts what the character originally looked like. But I don't know what I'm complaining about it's not like Im seeing this movie. Im just so tired of seeing the same concepts and ips that I am genuinely starting to dislike the original source material a little. I just went to the movies and the ads were Moana 2, Snow white, Wicked, Mufasa like it was comedic how many remakes and sequels they managed to fit into the before movie adds.

    • @jjeteuati264
      @jjeteuati264 Месяц назад

if they didn't bother making Nico look like Astrid regardless of her race, then it's a change in character design from animated to live action. its like Rick Riordan picking an African American girl for the live action adaptation of his character Annabeth that is not African American in it's original iteration. or nick fury being originally white but then having a different iteration that is black in the comics. you can change anything about a character in a different iteration of that character and certainly the creators of the original httyd can change how Astrid appears in live action, if anything they have every right to do so, it's their original work and their new adaptation of their original work

See here's the thing: I'm a massive fan of the original franchise. Huge. Probably one of the biggest. Just the animation, the story, the characters, the directing, the music. I watch it multiple times a year. The Race to the Edge show is my comfort show to the point that I've memorzied the episodes. So when I heard they were remaking it, my heart actually broke. It might be silly but to me it's a perfect franchise. The trilogy ended perfectly, the tv shows and specials all enrich the story, all that was left to do was leave it. Anything now added or changed will only harm the story. Maybe that's pesimistic, and it's definately biased but I don't care. I would loved to have seen a new story fron the same creators. In fact I'm dying for another story equally as good. Another franchise with spinoffs and movies to dive into the next couple years so to get the same thing in different font is just disappointing. I don't hate the look of the movie but anything that requires this much cgi is going to look weird juxtaposed with all the real elements and with the added cartoonish dragons it comes off as cheap. It looks like an AI made trailer honestly. And remaking the same shots just cheapens the original and treats us as dum as if we would accept the 2 as the same quality level. As for the Astrid thing, I don't mind as much as I thought I would. She does look like Astrid and if they had given her blonde hair I'm sure nobody would actually mind.
    That's my 2 cents.
I'm just trying my best to avoid all of it because it makes me sad. Maybe one day I'll be forced to watch it and find it not that bad, at the moment I'm wallowing in the fact that my favourite movies are hollywoods newest remake victim😢

I watched the trailer and thought, "Wow, that looks great! Why wait for it to come out in theaters, I'm just gonna sit down and watch it right now!" It's sad when the best idea studios have is to just make movies people liked again, knowing they'll apparently pay for them twice. Hollywood is creatively bankrupt. Yeah, I watched this trailer and went "Huh ... they actually changed too little." This was surprising, cause normally the issue is "They gutted the spirit of the original." With this one it's just like "Why though?" And it's fairly simple to answer my own question with "money." To be fair this may make some of the young actors careers if they all nail "becoming" these characters as much as the Hiccup actor seems to. And the CGI people who did "Toothless" should be proud and rewarded as well. At the end of the day though it's like ... "We already 'had' this."

It's a movie for kids, teens, and young adults. So, I do think folks are overthinking it far too much, looking at this like it's some sort of Rubix cube when it's really just media trying to reach new viewers in a vehicle that'll be recognizable to the audience they want to reach. Usually, a new I.P. doesn't make a lot of money, _but reskinned films_ do, and by a huge metric. Like it or not if you live in a country that isn't homogeneous you'll have to cast people who actually are a part of that population. I remember when people of color were all up and arms and the complaint was that, _white people,_ and taking their music. Turns out, the world didn't end, and music is just fine, and people of color are still considered the progenitors of their musical heritage. All that happened was _some_ people felt closer to the music and to certain cultures without having been born into them.
People like stuff that is cool, Vikings are cool, just like I see some white guys with dreadlocks. It's a thing that's not going to vanish. We're at a point where fantasy is seeing an influx of cultures no longer being bonded my skin tone. I think that's a good thing for the most part. Clearly, there will be _some_ missteps for sure. But overall, I'm happy to see culture being embraced by culture. So, the fear of this is a little paradoxical. Mainly because we don't exist as tribes anymore, why must certain racial identities be upheld in a complete fantasy when nothing about the plot itself calls for it?
Black Panther, Hitler, Lao Tzu, etc... these guys and their eras deserve the proper shine when called for. But when it's just fiction on fiction, in a world that doesn't take itself seriously and from a company that clearly is marketed to young folks, hope, joy, and a reverence for life. Why would you only want that to appeal to just one race? That's not an open question, just me thinking out loud.
When Disney makes something, they are trying to have mass appeal. I get it and forget it, then enjoy the movie or don't. It doesn't bother me to get all bent out of shape because some made-up character that never existed in a fantasy land might have one of their cast not be whatever the original race was or is. Admittedly, I usually watch more adult-oriented animation and usually only find myself interested in the live-action adaptations, only so I can later watch the original to see how they stack up together.
That's just fun for me to see two different types of styles being expressed. If they both exist why can't one of them be different from the other? In today's market I just think most of that race-bait stuff is just a huge waste of time to get mad about. I'm more about the writing and that's pretty much where my head is at most of the time. I'm totally gonna see that movie now unless she starts twerking or doing an old-school rap song... I think it'll be fine, but who knows maybe the world will blow up.

It would have been cool had they expanded the Story, but a Shot for Shot Remake but in Live Action seems unnecessary. Had this been a gap filler movie about a new young rider would have been a better direction. But "diversity" in Hollywood is a little laughably superficial, why not present a diverse accent/language/view by bringing in a cast of young up and coming actors from Denmark, Norway, Sweden etc?

For example ''Snow White And The Huntsman'' or ''I Will Always Love You'' covered by Whitney Houston.
I think it's a mixture of bad story telling, laziness from the production side and a general childishness, hatefulness and lack of grace from the audience.

I got this maybe stupid, maybe crazy idea, while discussing this trailer-teaser whatever that is with the community of one RUclipsr (ofc we all were crying over it cause why does it even exist :P)
So, IF they want to continue milking the Httyd franchise THAT bad and want to make a live action, wouldn't it be better to remember their absolute failer, a forgotten, forbidden to mention in this community movie, where they tried to bring dragons to modern times (I don't even remember its proper name). But scratch it entirely and leave only the premise "dragons in modern times". All these remakes try to be more serious as if like "cartoons were for kids, here is a film of the cartoon for the growns up, who were watching these cartoons when they were small". Well, at least a bunch of them were presented like that.
Anyway, that "dragons in modern times" remake can even repeat the general story of the first movie. Ppl most likely will start hunting and killing the dragons when they start noticing them around certain area to make money or research them in labs or smth. For example we have a character a young researcher or even just a curious "adventurer" who snuck in the area of dragon sightings. From there we can basically repeat Hiccup's path or, maybe, this character finds some journals about dragons that Hiccup made (though the likelihood of paper surviving that long and the text there being decipherable is so so). And here comes the "remake's seriousness". If Hiccup had to change the view of dragons only for his tribe, then here we have a whole world scale. Unrealistic? Yes. But honestly, that premise whould make me at least curious to want to come to theater and see what they did their. After all there are a bunch of videos on RUclips I saw along the lines "what if dragons (of this franchise in particular) were here in modern world". It even has the so loved by Hollywood hidden political message or one of as in "we should save the nature" stuff. What we have now does not spark even a tiny bit of curiosity in me, I better go rewatch the original.

I don't mind the casting. Frankly, I like it quite a lot based on the simple reason that Nico Parker is adorable AND choosing her means, to me at least, that they cared about the person's acting abilities and not what color they were. Good.
No, my hesitation with this live action is the Uncanny Valley feeling I get from watching the trailer. Everything is the same. Same lines. Same movements. Even the dragons' CGI isn't that far off the original animation. It's very trippy to watch. I'm really hoping that there are some script differences they are keeping close to the vest. Like some of the original books storylines, or even some of the tv series characters getting involved.
Otherwise we end up at 'what's the point other than cash grab?' Something I think would be very sad for such an amazing and beloved franchise.
I really want to be excited, I'm one of the few people that like live action adaptations. I am however choosing to hold in my adoration until I see the final product. I'm cautiously optimistic and holding my cynicism back. 💗

These companies are too lazy to write anything new, therefor they remake old movies. Easy money. Just stop watching that crap and then we will see some new stuff again.

"they race swap exclusively white characters." uh yeah because cinema has been dominated by white characters since like... its inception lmao. the "they only do it to white people" critique, which pretty much is "it goes both ways" but less codified, presupposes an equity which has never been there. for race swapping to apply to all races evenly, there would need to be enough roles for people of all different races and ethnicities available, but there just isn't and even a casual filmgoer simply cannot deny that the overwhelming amount of characters we see in mainstream media have been and still are very much white. as a white person, I do not give a single shit if there is one less blue eyed blonde haired white woman in a kids' movie (who was also voiced by Latina America Ferrerra in the OG cartoon, btw). the fact that this is even an issue, and that some white people seem to be quite twitterpated about seeing slightly fewer characters who look like them in media when cinema is still largely, overwhelmingly white is bonkers.
At any rate, I do agree with the argument that original content would be much better than hiring actors who don't look like the original character to play that character, but Hollywood seems allergic to creativity (which like, given how well some of those Disney remakes did despite being trash we can't even blame them). at any rate, it really shouldn't offend or bother anyone that there are more non white actors being given roles in these high profile films, especially in the realm of fiction and particularly sci fi or fantasy.

Yeah, I think my only issue with your point would be the assumption that going the other direction for the sake of “equity” is the right call either. Going the other extreme doesn’t fix things IMO

The main reason for the Live-Action copy of the animated film is because they want more adults to see it, and most adults who saw the original animation films were parents who took their kids to see it..And they want adults to see the movie because it will generate more curiosity and excitement for their soon-to-be-opened How To Train Your Dragon theme park..
That's pretty much all this is..
If this is actually a 99% shot for shot remake, and it's successful, perhaps we'll finally see more shot for shot adaptations of beloved book series because we can then say to those naysayers who always come out with the 'why would you want to watch a movie of something where you already know everything that happens'..Well it worked for HTTYD..

I'm kind of disappointed in these videos coming from you (coming from someone who loved the reaction channel). The reason raceswapping characters is happening seemingly one way is because all minority stories with mainstream success in Hollywood have been tied to our identity. Minority characters don't get that treatment normally. You can't raceswap The Help because it's about racism. You can't raceswap Slumdog Millionaire because it's about a kid being able to leave the slums of India. You can't raceswap The Princess & The Frog because it's about a woman in the 1920s not getting her restaurant due to racism. But on the other hand: Doctor Who (not tied to race), Bob's Burgers (not tied to race), Bridgerton Books (not tied to race), Heartstopper (not tied to race). And the list goes on.
It's not PR to us. It's finally getting stories that aren't always obsessed with our race. The fact that it is still seen as PR moves and diversity stunts is actually something that needs to be looked at internally. Why is it always PR to get a story not about race but with a minority as lead? And if you've never thought about it that way before then that's fine but it's something to recognize. Even silly things like Twilight, the director had to argue to make Laurent black and only got it approved because he's playing a villain. The only other minority characters with any prevalence are the wolves who have to be Native American because of the storyline. Even then, they can't escape from the story having to be about their race.
The problem lies in the fact that minorities don't get stories told for them devoid of having to be tied to their race. And because that is an integral part of the stories, they can't be race swapped. We know this. We've said this. People are purposefully not listening and then wanting to make it seem like it's an issue.
In regards to Nico and HTTYD specifically, Nico is 75% white. She has played mainly white girls because of the way she looks. She's also British not African-American but that's besides the point. What makes it a raceswap if she is significantly the race of the character she is playing and looks it too? This creates a rather dangerous precedent that mixed kids have to pick one race and they don't even get the choice of their own personhood. The director has been making statements about her casting and why they chose her as well as answering questions about the film, including that he wants original movies too but that's just not what the studios are looking for right now. Which ties into why we aren't getting original stories with minority leads that aren't about their race. Because the studios have seen original movies flop (both white and nonwhite) and instead of taking a chance again, as if they don't have millions of dollars and can afford some flops, they are interested in adaptations and remakes at the moment.
It's just like the Amandla Stenberg video. Not once in her song did she mention Star Wars or this is a diss to those haters or anything about Disney at all. The only specific about her life she gives is that because she's now in some popular show an OLD interview of her with Trevor Noah is resurfacing and people are splicing it or trying to make it seem like it's a new interview when it isn't.
She then goes on to talk about racism and oppression on a massive scale. She never proclaimed herself an artist, this isn't even a diss track to her Star Wars haters. This is very disingenuous content and frankly seems to be on purpose. She has dealt with racism in the industry down to people saying they don't feel bad for Rue getting killed because a little black girl played her. So, yeah, she's probably tired of all the vitriol spewed at her. But even with that she didn't make this solely about her or claims her haters are just mad about diversity in Star Wars.
You and everyone else honestly proved her point by making it about the Acolyte. You turned it into something it wasn't which is honestly the same thing you did with the Doctor Who video when you decided to make a whole video about an article a random woman wrote where Ncuti wasn't interviewed and neither he nor the BBC nor Disney sponsored said article. It feels like bad faith journalism.

This is a really interesting perspective. I’d have to think about other famous movies with minorities.
As far as previous topics, I’m happy to admit that my perspectives are not always perfect, and I’m constantly trying to hone my opinions and the say I craft my arguments and videos overall.
I understand your fear of bad faith. I do my best to make sure I don’t fall into that. And will continue to do so.
In this video, I went out of my way to be sure that Nico Parker was not at fault in any way, because I really think she wasn’t. And, personally, it’s not as egregious of a situation as others.
