Sadly I am indifferent to this trailer because it is another live-action remake but I'm sure plenty of people will still watch and enjoy it. I do have some criticisms of the quality, I agree with you that the costumes look like cosplay and not in a positive way. I think in addition to the quality of the costumes, a point to make is that the original animated characters have purposefully unusual proportions which animation can get away with but real people don't have those proportions. They managed to get Stoic to be as wide as possible and clearly has that presence, but Snotlout was a short stubby guy in animation and now he's being played by a normal-sized person. I think that is contributing to the cosplay effect, you see normal people wearing the clothes of the characters but they don't have the animated proportions. Additionally, compare the animated and live-action scenes of Toothless caught in Hiccup's trap and watch how Toothless opens his eye. In animation they pan the camera over Toothless, his eye is closed, then his wing blocks the view of the camera for a split second, and the next instant his eye is suddenly open and staring at Hiccup/the camera/the audience. A powerful moment with great care taken in the cinematography! In the live-action trailer, it is simply a still shot and you watch Toothless slowly open his eye and look at us. Far less consideration put into that moment and unfortunately it feels lazy. Even Toothless's pupil is different, in animation his pupil was an extremely narrow slit that made him very menacing but in live-action it is so much wider and thus he has what is his signature cute appearance but in a scene where at this point he is supposed to be a deadly monster. It reminds me of a video I watched comparing the animated and live-action portrayals of Katara vs. Pakku in Avatar: The Last Airbender. The animated version makes use of wide shots, close shots, and moving the camera in the direction of the fight while the live-action consisted mostly of static mid-shots. I know a lot of animated scenes are somewhere between extremely difficult and impossible to recreate in live-action but I don't think the Toothless scene I described is that hard to do. So far yes, the rest of the shots look pretty 1 to 1 but then you have this one important shot that got looked over. All of that to say that this live-action adaptation will be hit or miss and we won't know for sure until it comes out. If you're excited, that's great! But these indisputable details about costume design, character proportions, and camera usage is enough to warrant caution, the camera work especially can be a subtle signal of lack of care for this movie.
Everyone's gonna hate me for this, but I do feel like Dreamworks gets a pass with stuff Disney does; claims Disney has run out of originality when they started doing a lot of remakes in the 2010s, as well as the false claim that all they make is adaptations when many DW films are also inspired by fairy tales, novels, or other pre-existing properties.
@ThePrincessCH TPOE would count as religious, not a folktale, while Sinbad is more of a fairy tale. Of course they also adapted novels like "Orion and the Dark," "Rise of the Guardians," "The Wild Robot," etc.
Seeing the clip of Hiccups actor with his natural curly hair makes me wish they had stuck with that. The early 2010s hair of Hiccup in the original does not fit live action well.
In spite of the fact that it’s only been 5 years since the last installment of the franchise, I think it’s a smart move to do the remake at this time. Gerard Butler is at the perfect stage in his lifetime to reprise his role as Stoic the Vast. If Universal and Dreamworks had waited another 10 or 20 years, he would have been too old for the role, definitely if they had waited 20. I’m so happy to see him in his iconic role in live action.
And that's for me the another nail to show that current AAA Hollywood is dying. Some things are only good as animated movie/series. They have problem with creativity, made something new or/and just afraid of made something new, and even when do that, they do that in shitty manner like "Red One", just quick create a universe. The next trend that Hollywood do next? Do remakes of old century movies, like Nosferatu.
I've seen alot of people saying "it looks so dull" and...yeah. alot of people tend to forget the og 3 movies take PLACE in Scotland. Hell, Berk is a real island snuggled in the scottish isles. Being a scot myself, im glad the skys so grey because the weather here is not nice and sunny like the animated movies would lead you to believe.
I don't know if you know this but there's a show called race to the edge on Netflix that you're supposed to watch between the first movie and second movie that gives more context and character development
I love the original animation trilogy of how to train your dragon i know its not really needed but I'm actually looking forward to seeing this live action interpretation and what it might entail i think this will be no doubt a big success
when seeing that mason was gonna play hiccup, i was excited for it, but seeing him in the tralier, it kind of weird to me, hiccup is suppose to be scrawny and a "loser", and mason doesn't look like that at all, like honesty Mason looks like hiccup in the 2nd and 3rd movie, but overall im kind of excited for the film, not sure if its worth going to the cinemas for it, especially if they're just gonna replicate everything, like ofc its a live version of it, but I wish instead of the movie, we got a game instead, like an upgraded version of school of dragons, why aren't they doing that?? But also I want them to make this film, for the fans that are older, make it more "gruesome", its live action even though they're using cgi and all, it should be more realistic, like some true viking culture, kind of like the movie "the northman". I know a lot of people hate when directors create a live action film of an animated one, so its seen as less "childish", but like this film is about dragons, in live action, people are being murder, theres dragons the set themselves on fire, they're vikings!! they have this war with dragons, but anyways I doubt that they'll do that, because toothless literally looks the same, idk its cool, but it'll also be cooler if they did their own thing, anyways overall excited for the film.
I'm not against it, it just looks like a shot for shot of the original and I'm not sure why I'd want to spend money on it. When the animated version is less awkward.
They should’ve gotten Micheal Cera to play hiccup. He could’ve added some funny as well as heartwarming scenes. I would hate to see a soulless 1 to 1 remake. And why the bloody hell isn’t Astrid a hot blonde??? 😅
IK, the whole movement of diversity and all that stuff changing race. Its annoying because now we are just getting ride of blondes, why can they make you new stories with new characters. I feel discriminated against as a blonde. It genially makes me upset, I was really, really exited for this. they gave it away....
There was a time when I wanted to see live-action adaptations to cartoons, video games, and comics, but now I'm burnt out on them because I find those other medias to be more creative. I blame Disney with their "remake everything to milk the nostalgia cow dry, including the Moana movie that is not even a decade old (as of 2024)" method and also the MCU just overdoing it since Endgame. In terms of the trailer for HTTYD, it looks pretty good. The CGI and design of Toothless looks good and is very identical to the character, which I want to see. Hiccup and Stoick are not bad for what their characters look and sound like. I even like that they brought in Gerard Butler to reprise his role from the cartoon, similar to what they kinda did with James Earl Jones (may he rest in peace). And the music just brings back memories of experiencing the cartoon in theaters. But again, due to being over exposed to live-action adaptations and also becoming a lover of anime, the charm and excitement has worn off by this point. That said, I do hope this movie is good and that it is faithful to the original, because Toothless and Hiccup's relationship is a huge must for this to work.
.......thye couldnt give anyone a blond wig? wtf is this. Also they probably could have left the guy who plays hiccup with his natural hair texture, I feel like that ould have fit in fine
See, I wasn't overly excited for this live action. However, when watching the trailer, and hearing the HTTYD music swell...oof, the nostalgia kicked in. The itch has been scratched, and I want more now.
I think the issue for me with Hiccup is that they (obviously) needed to age the characters up, and so he looks way older than animated Hiccup. That may be why that feels off. Cause Hiccup felt barely teenage, and the actor looks... well, like you said, a dude in his twenties cosplaying as a teenager.
I had to pause at 1:24 to get a better look of the teens/YAs. If y'all want to critique their looks/designs, by all means I'm opening my replies as a Discussion Board. No judgement, just get it all out there!
Despite many casting choices being weird in modern movies to me… I actually like these. The characters still LOOK like the characters, even if their hair or skin is slightly different. I’m sure some complain about Astrid but I’m really not sure why, her overall design and appearance looks pretty accurate aside from her hair, but they even kind of mimicked her braid. I wasn’t a fan of the annabeth and Percy casting in the new show (Percy got whitewashed, Annabeth just flat out looked nothing like Annabeth, no hate to the actress I just think they could have at least gone with some hair dye and more effort on the iconic ponytail, and a better costume than what she had… like at LEAST an orange shirt) but legitimately I feel that thought went into the appearance accuracy of the HYTD cast, even if I don’t like that they’re remaking it at all.
@@a_bionicle6635I think Astrid's actor looks absolutely adorable in this outfit. She would've made a fine viking for the show, I just don't think she fits as Astrid specifically. Astrid, in the first movie, was honestly not that pretty. She was a teenager, with a kind of rough looking face and she constantly looked angry or smug. Nico is way too adorable and pretty for the role (again, going off of the very first movie). I also don't like that they took away every core appearance that defined Astrid. Blonde hair, blue eyes, extremely white skin. Even her big braid is gone, and those side bang thingies she got going on in her face. Not to mention her og outfit looks totally different from what I can see. Overall, I think her character fits in perfectly with the world, but it doesn't at all fit for Astrid. I honestly have my gripe with Hiccup as well. He just doesn't look like Hiccup, if I'm being honest, and both actors are way too pretty for the role, considering it's meant to be teenagers going through puperty in a world where there is no make up or skin care. I think Nico's character would've worked much better as a different, possibly new female character.
I do see a lot of people say Astrid looks accurate which has me very confused. Are people just saying that to not get hate from others? Because I look at Nico's character and she looks nothing like Astrid.
I just feel like this entire movie was a missed opportunity to make Toothless and the other dragons into actually intimidating dragons. They could've upped the age restriction and turned Toothless into a genuinely vicious looking dragon who just so happens to befriend a human. It could've been faithful to the original while still having its own flair. If you're just gonna keep Toothless as this goofy, joyful character there's really no point in remaking this movie at all. Making it a little darker and turning Toothless into an actual threat, thus marking Hiccup's bravery and actions into a more world changing action could've brought an older audience into the fandom. So far, it just feels like another children's movie - which is fine - but it just feels like a wasted opportunity. I would've loved to see a more mature, possibly more realistic version of httyd that shows just how dangerous wild animals can be.
2:20 really think they should have gone with older actors at least 18-20 (like in HG or MR) because with child actors a lot of things are probably going to get cut ✂out (especially the romance stuff!)- never mind just looked up and ig xD actor playing Hiccup is a minor until next July, and actresses playing Astrid is a legal adult but not sure maybe the legal age might be different in Hollywood? Hello?
I don’t understand why they keep doing this and why people keep falling for it like a bunch of clapping seals. I'm actually thankful this movie is coming out because it's gonna reveal the double standard and bias the online community has towards hating Disney but bending over for DreamWorks despite doing the exact thing Disney has been getting shit for.
I don’t hate it, the shots look really good but I think it’s unnecessary to have a live action when we still have the original movie still available to watch.
I really do have hopes for the new How to train your dragon movie, but I probably won't watch it. So I'm relying on Smarty to give on of his classic reviews. And speaking of one's nostalgia, Stargate Atlantis theme hits me hard, REALLY hard. The SG1 theme's good, but I get goosebumps in just the first second of the classic Atlantis theme. I beg, review it :')
i hope they have the original composer for the movie for if there is one thing i adore about the franchise is the epic music in the movies like the main theme its telling us that there be dragon where we are doing or the test flying scene i love the music when hiccup and toothless dive toward the water and from what ive seen of like astrid she does look find not great like the does in the animated franchise she always been one of my favorite i wonder how they will do them in the live action movies hiccup and astrid are the best part of the animated franchise
It does look pretty but I really dont understand the point … idk why but I feel like it makes more sense to adapt old 2D movies especially if the story is problematic and could use a little refresh but here I definitely don’t see the point
Still confused on how some folks are offended over the casting of Astrid , that girls looks white. Furthermore, this movie does not depict anything close to the real Viking era , starting with the most important fact that Vikings did not speak English. Lol enjoy the damn movie and stop being such a man baby
The thing for me though is that i dont care how good the movie is, im upset its being made at all. Why cant animation just be respected as a medium? Its just a lazy cashgrab so they dont have to come up with new ideas. Which makes no sense, the puss in boots the last wish did great, spiderverse and arcane are praised on the rooftops. So why do ppl think something has to have famous actors as a characters face in order to be mature? Like 80 percent of the movie is gonna be cgi anyway, its just "hyper realistic" Idk ik a lot of ppl dont share my opinion and will say its not that deep, that they do want to see the dragons and characters realistically, but with the rise in live action, ai, sequels and prequels, etc it feels lke the world is going backwards. We arent evolving. Ai steals art meaning its not making anything new, same with these movies capitalising off of nostalgia.
@@ThePrincessCH makes sense, it's clear one of their motives for this movie is to bring in the newer generation since dragons the nine realms flopped so bad, I just wish they'd let this franchise rest. Trying to retell a story instead of just putting in the effort to make something new is so disappointing, the new generations deserve their own childhoods
It would've drawn some interest for me if they did something different with the design of the dragons but they look almost identical to the original so I don't see the point. Why pay extra to watch something I've already seen?
True. Would have been cool if they did a mix of the live spectacular dragons' looks and the animated one. Because the Stormfly and Hookfang animatronics looked fenomenal and scary. The only one that didn't look that great was Toothless and that was likely because of the colors they had to use so that people could see him in the mostly dark theatre. But if they did then people would complain about the Dragons looking not like the OGs.
Sorry, I don’t see the point in redoing a story if you’re just retelling the exact same story, paint by numbers style. Some examples of it done well: live action 101 Dalmatians, Once Upon a Time the tv series, Fun With Dick and Jane, The Parent Trap. You’d take the original and change it up, make it different. I stand by what I said, if all they do is retell it in the exact same way as before, and go about it the lazy way hashing it out exactly like the original, I have no motivation to go see it.
It is silly to cast Astrid as a BIPOC woman in ancient Scandinavia 1000 years ago. Race swapping is racism. Hopefully someday, Hollywood will learn that original characters are fine just like they were created and that erasing them is wrong. It's seems like every hundred years or so we have to learn these lessons all over again.
I’m so fucking sick of them doing ‘live actions’ or ‘remakes’ for perfect shit that doesn’t need it. It’s clearly a cash grab and you all are falling for it
I'm less worried about skin colour, as I wouldn't exactly call her black. The problem is that they didn't even try to make her look like Astrid. How hard is it to get some blonde hair? You're just playing into their hands by being overly blunt and simplistic in your description of the problem, which is natural when we are passionate about something, but in this day and age, we would do better to not give them what they want. I.E. a reason to call us racists even if we're not.
@@VinnesRC i'm just clarifying that i'll vote with my wallet. i understand what you meant but i just won't endorse a crappy reboot done for the sake of DEI
It's not the casting that bothers me about this it's that they messed up the design of almost every character somehow som have the wrong hair like hick up some doesn't look like twins and they messed up the hair colour anyway I mean there is no blond at all anymore in the kids crew that's just disappointing and I kinda don't like how they dressed astrid it's to less armor it kind look more than her in the third movie and yes you could have solved som of that with a wig or just different casting or just different costume desigers but it too late for that now is it maybe they fastet som good talents at least that could save the show maybe
I just feel like they looked at the first few options of actors and then went with them, rather than spending some time finding actually accurate actors. Other than Tuffnut and maybe Stoic I don't think any of the actors really fit their role.
Why? Just why? It’s practically shot for shot. Line for line remake of a movie franchise that’s not that old. Why not just rerelease the original movie at this point, instead of spending millions to make a half hearted half assed live action remake? It’s no wonder people don’t respect animation anymore when people want live action remakes of animated movies that honestly make the world look better because it’s happening in the same world instead of CGI models that aren’t even there.

I am a huge fan of the series and I so excited for this flim
no matter how hard they try it’ll still probably end up looking like a bunch of people at renfaire attempting to recite the movie lol
Ay dont insult the renfaires!
I think "Sinbad" and "The Prince of Egypt" were DreamWorks only films that were folktale inspired.
@ThePrincessCH TPOE would count as religious, not a folktale, while Sinbad is more of a fairy tale. Of course they also adapted novels like "Orion and the Dark," "Rise of the Guardians," "The Wild Robot," etc.
Even just the teaser trailer blew me away. I'm so excited for this.
Seeing the clip of Hiccups actor with his natural curly hair makes me wish they had stuck with that. The early 2010s hair of Hiccup in the original does not fit live action well.
I heard from Jesterbell that they made this to promote a theme park attraction.
it’s definitely not necessary but i don’t hate it
In spite of the fact that it’s only been 5 years since the last installment of the franchise, I think it’s a smart move to do the remake at this time.
It can’t ever be a movie that actually could really use a remake, it always has to be something that doesn’t need one at all.
Do remakes of old century movies, like Nosferatu.
from the looks of the trailer it is going to be the exact same movie with out massive plot changes in other live action adaptations. looks beautiful
I heard from Jesterbell that it's to promote a theme park attraction.
Dean himself said that it won't be a shot for shot. They keep the core story and iconic scenes and built upon that.
Man, i hope this one dosen't pull a TLK 2019 and does it's own thing
It probably will
WOW it’s as if the original dragon movie didn’t do the same thing 💀
@@pandoraarts7748 How close does Eddie Murphy look from the Dr. Doolittle from the books?
@ idk what the heck your talking about.
@@pandoraarts7748 Eddie Murphy is probably the more recognizable version of Dr. Doolittle, but his appearance differs wildly from the original books.
Wait the only thing I don't like is Astrid has brown hair here bro she is a blonde that's all I have to say
I would've loved to see a more mature, possibly more realistic version of httyd that shows just how dangerous wild animals can be.
gives me a reason why I should go to the film
The way I've been waiting for your video on this
Same here, I'm all in!
As long as illumination doesn’t start making live action minions where all good
The remake is completely unnecessary, the original animated trilogy only concluded 5 years ago.
When will we get the live action remakes of Prince of Egypt, Road to Eldorado, Shrek and Kung Fu Panda?
2:20 really think they should have gone with older actors at least 18-20 (like in HG or MR) because with child actors a lot of things are probably going to get cut ✂out (especially the romance stuff!)- never mind just looked up and ig xD actor playing Hiccup is a minor until next July, and actresses playing Astrid is a legal adult but not sure maybe the legal age might be different in Hollywood? Hello?
This movie is going to be awesome 😎
I don’t understand why they keep doing this and why people keep falling for it like a bunch of clapping seals. I'm actually thankful this movie is coming out because it's gonna reveal the double standard and bias the online community has towards hating Disney but bending over for DreamWorks despite doing the exact thing Disney has been getting shit for.
2:06 THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT!!!
I don’t hate it, the shots look really good but I think it’s unnecessary to have a live action when we still have the original movie still available to watch.
*So the trailer for The Dragon Prince season 7 just dropped.*
Like 80 percent of the movie is gonna be cgi anyway, its just "hyper realistic"
Idk ik a lot of ppl dont share my opinion and will say its not that deep, that they do want to see the dragons and characters realistically, but with the rise in live action, ai, sequels and prequels, etc it feels lke the world is going backwards. We arent evolving. Ai steals art meaning its not making anything new, same with these movies capitalising off of nostalgia.
I heard from Jesterbell that it's to promote a theme park attraction.
Why dont they cast ppl who actually look like the characters bruh
I am too old for this
It would've drawn some interest for me if they did something different with the design of the dragons but they look almost identical to the original so I don't see the point.
It’s clearly a cash grab and you all are falling for it
I heard from Jesterbell that it's to promote a theme park attraction.
I know it's a cash grab, I just don't care, it looks fun
They did show they Bond grow in the TV show
can't they work on finishing Kung Fu Panda first?
Atleast they made Bad Guys 2..
I'm just upset about astrids hair. I like het as a blonde with blue eyes
black Astrid= nope
Bro, she is 75% white....
@@VinnesRC if they can't be bothered to keep the character consistent then i won't bother watching it.
@@capitanspoiler7393 I don't recall telling you to watch it, but ok.
@@VinnesRC i'm just clarifying that i'll vote with my wallet. i understand what you meant but i just won't endorse a crappy reboot done for the sake of DEI
Same! I can't believe that my childhood is coming to life! Glad it's not a soulless at least for me! ❤
WOOO UES
Toothless doesn't look good to me at all. His movements and expressions are really stiff, like stop motion with a plastic doll.
I think you're high
lemme get some so I can re-watch the live action cats.
I feel like the hiccup actor is too old
Aren't all the other dragon trainers in the same age range?
@ThePrincessCH yes but in the animation they all feel younger
Why?
I heard from Jesterbell that it's to promote a theme park attraction.
It is NOT a shot for shot remake. The Director himself said that. They just keep all the really iconic scenes like the ones seen in the trailer.
Yeah nah, HTTYD is my favorite animated trilogy and this ain’t it, soulless cashgrab not a fan
