    You know the 23° scandi grind on a Mora is 23° inclusive ? That Lansky sharpener sharpens your edge to 22.5° per side. Pull through sharpeners are garbage anyways, just use something like a DC4.

    I can see right off the bat that the Robust has a thicker blade. Now to each their own but if you're going to baton (Only if you don't have a hatchet/axe available and you ARE in a survival role, not weekend warrior role) the robust would be a better choice. If you're going to need more as far as food preparation you want a thinner blade width. In my personal opinion, Mora knives are fantastic knives but should really be used as secondary knives (for smaller tasks) and not primary knives. It fills a great role of a camping knife, for the price.

    • @Heirphoto
      @Heirphoto 7 лет назад +1

      It does look thinner yet the new specs for the Companion HD show it at 3.2mm same as the High Q. I wonder if his HD is really an MG. Just measured my Companion HD and it is 1/8"

    • @craptastic4527

      The companion just has a rounded spine. The robust looks less round and catches the light more, giving the appearance of a thicker stock.

  • @meawoodsman8321
    @meawoodsman8321 8 лет назад +3

    The two knives are identical except for the color and attachment point on the Robust sheath. In the past Mora has always charged a few dollars more for the MG color. Many people don't like the button shape attachment point on the Robust sheath so they try to move them at a lower price.

    • @MrEpic4631

    I sense a disturbance in the field. This is doubtless because there are 2 versions of the Robust. 1) Robust Classic, oldest, the one you see here; 2 ) Robust HD, newer, has the finger guards and a shorter blade. Mora doesn't put the name identifying the model on the blades. Hence confusion. I think the one with the grey handle is cooler. Cheaper too.

  • @AtomicArcherGuy
    @AtomicArcherGuy 5 лет назад +7

    I’m not sure, especially since this video is older and that means new models may have replaced old ones but with new names... that is not a mora Robust. It is a Companion HD. The giveaway is the handles. The Robust (at least the newest one) handle has a much more pronounced guard. The companion is more streamlined like we see here on both knives.
    Also, baton with them all you want. You can’t tell me it’s not made to handle it. The heavy duty moras test really well on tests designed to intentionally damage them, and, they’re cheap. Would you rather spend $60 on a beefier knife and then whack it off things and risk breaking it, or would you rather do that with the cheap, $20 knife with the plastic handle that doesn’t look pretty (they’re not ugly, but they are very utilitarian, let’s face it)? I know what i would use. The one that’s easier to afford to replace. Although I would still stick to the robust. Better to be a bit on the safe side.

  • @ramonrodriguez5728
    @ramonrodriguez5728 6 лет назад +1

    You're right on, the difference is in the edge angle. The heavy duty has a more abtuse edge geometry.

  • @jacktrades4261
    @jacktrades4261 5 лет назад

    That sharpener is meant for 22.5 per side, so 45 degrees in total, when the Moras have 23 or 27 per total. You can use it free hand, but no passing trough, unless absolutely necessary. Anyway, nice comparison though.

    Your gray knife is not Mora Robust. Robust features 89mm blase vs 100mm on Companion, has completely other handle and sheath.
    www.lamnia.com/en/p/10081/knives/morakniv-robust-knife
    So you are comparing same knives. The only reason is handle color, it might be some limited run for particular distributor or business (for painters for instance).

  • @ravendon
    @ravendon 7 лет назад +3

    Mora Robust and the Mora Companion Heavy Duty are the same thickness of 1/8". But, the Mora Robust has a 3.6" blade and the Mora Companion Heavy Duty has a 4.1" blade with a larger handle and a 27 degree edge instead of a 23 degree edge. Hope that helps.

  • @crux85
    @crux85 9 лет назад

    the difference in my two moras (exact same models) is that the Companion has an overall better finish, first place you notice this is on the spine of the blade. Second, the injection lines on the sheath, and so on...
    But yeah, gear marketed for camping is usually more expensive.

      Jeffery Whitlock, I just received a Companion HD/Robust Combo from Amazon. The Companion HD blade is 1/2" longer, and, slightly thicker than the Robust. I know the Robust is supposed to be slightly thicker than the HD, but, not on mine. My eyes said the HD is wider, and, my measurement verified. Did I get a one off run, that has a thicker HD blade, or, are the brand new HDs now slightly wider than the Robust. Also, IMO, the Companion HD feels much better in my hand, and, feels more substantial than the Robust. My Robust seems almost small compared to my Companion HD.

    You ruin the edge completely with a pull through sharpener, regardless of the angle.. A Scandi has a zero degree grind, and you have to sharpen the entire bevel at once. You can't do that with a pull through sharpener. You MUST lay the entire bevel flat on a stone to sharpen it. That pull through, used just once, has totally destroyed the Scandi grind.

    • @londiniumarmoury7037
      @londiniumarmoury7037 3 года назад +3

      I know this is an old comment, just wanted to reply so other readers can see, you are right about pull through sharpeners, but it's a misconception that scandi grinds are Zero degree grinds. The Mora scandi is a 22 degree inclusive grind, which is roughly 11 degree exclusive per side. It's said that the "Edge runs to Zero degree" but that's useless info as no edge is zero degree even at the apex, and all edges apex off no matter if it has a secondary bevel or not. There's no such thing as a zero degree angle, because a zero degree wedge is a flat bar. Every edge has a degree of incline, even the thinnest full flat grind with no secondary bevel still has an edge degree angle, even if it's only 7 degree per side.

    I fixed the retention problem with velcro one wrap strap...
    www.homedepot.com/p/VELCRO-brand-12-ft-x-3-4-in-One-Wrap-Strap-90340/202261925
    and a 1/8 inch depth Chicago screw with a drill bit the same diameter as the Chicago screw. I drilled a hole in the sheath about 3/4 inch down from the top of the belt loop easily accessed from the slot in the back. Then I used the back of the drill bit and heated it with a bic lighter and melted a hole in a 4" strip of the velcro strap. I secured it to the sheath with the chicago screw and trimmed it as necessary with scissors. It makes a great retention strap. You can not pull the knife out if you try, without opening the strap' And If I ever cut it by accident there is plenty of strap to replace it since there is 12 feet on a roll. That strapping also works great for attaching things to a pack, wrapping up a wool blanket or tarp or anything else. It weighs nothing and is easy to pack. Just my 2 cents. I agree. I own the Robust Carbon and a Stainless Steal Companion for wet conditions.

    The markings on your sharpener are the *half* angle. You need to double that to get the overall angle, which is now Scandi grinds are measured.
    You can use that sharpener to add a micro-bevel to the Scandi grind, but you need to be very careful in how much you use it. Too much and you are defeating the point of a Scandi blade.

    The Aesop's Fable of "The Emperor's New Clothes" comes to mind when discussing Mora Knives. Take the magical thinking from the collection and what is left is the reality. Mora makes lots of the exact same knives with different handles and names.
    Yes, they are outstanding knives. As long as people continue to idolize them; the scam works well. (If I could produce toothpicks of various colors and with different names, that all worked well, then I would be guilty of the same concept). They sell and the public flocks behind their products.

    • @davo171

      +Gobekli tepe I disagree, the differences are subtle-however bushcrafters, outdoorsman, knife-fans love to debate and discuss these differences in all blades. Superficially they look similar-but there are differences in tang, blade steel, thickness, profile, weight, etc.
      They are inexpensive, highly functional and easy to sharpen. Yes, some of it is marketing-but its not all marketing.
      You could know almost nothing about blades and be happy with most any Mora, or you can geek out about the differences.

    Don't baton with any knife. The only people who do that are victims of RUclips incest. One "expert" who knows nothing about real woodcraft starts something on RUclips, it spreads like a plague, and thousands start doing it. It's a truly foolish thing to do. Real woodsmen use a hatchet, or a well-designed tomahawk, and a saw to process wood. They never, ever use their knife. A hatchet, or a well-designed tomahawk, batons better than any knife, and doesn't put you knife, your best friend, at risk in the process. People actually believe that as long as the knife doesn't break, they're fine. That's nonsense. Any knife can break, but the real worry is the knife's edge. Chip that, or roll it too bad, when in a survival situation, and you make not make it out alive. Three hundred people disappear in the wilderness every year, and a number of others are found dead. My experience is that the great majority did not take the proper tools with them, thinking a knife could do it all. Be a real woodsman, and not a victim of RUclips incest. You might live longer.

      The technique has been around a lot longer than RUclips. The joy of your comment is that you make the same "expert" claim about hatchets. The ability to baton is a fall back...another option, if you will, when in a survival situation rather than a normal weekend camp trip normal occurrence. I used to carry a US issue machete in my pack along with my camp axe and a spare folding knife. If the axe handle happened to break the machete would work for baton use if needed for survival and worked great in it's own for small brush processing and clearing a path. I was certainly not going to be able to do that with my spare locking folder, but that was (and remains in the pack) for normal knife tasks if my belt knife was lost or broken.
      Simply put there are many ways to accomplish a task, and in a real survival situation you do what is necessary to survive or you don't survive. Offering advice on what works for you to others helps us all learn as long as we remember to keep it factual.

      James Ritchie ehat if u dont have a hatchet huh? thats why you baton a knife, ever heard of bushcrafting? because in bushcrafting you baton, because it based on survival skills. if you only have a knife on you in the wilderness then you will have to baton a knife :)

      James Ritchie how the heck do you baton a hatchet? batoning a knife is for finer work when a super small hatchet is not even necessary or practical

      In a "survival Situation" I am batoning if I need to. Most here on You Tube aren't ever going to be in that situation anyways and if they were probably wouldn't survive anyway...myself included.

      I'm not going claim I'M an expert, but I bought my first Mora (called Eriksson then) back in 1956 for a whopping $1.50 and learned Batoning that same year. I have used knives from the Mangroves of Brazil to the Arctic Circle ( and most places inbetween). I have batoned the crap out of my field knives and have never broken one. At 70 years old, I think I better quit doing that now that I know how wrong I've been all these years. Thanks for the advice.
