Mora Robust Vs Mora Companion

- I cleaned the edges on both knives prior to this testing.
I polished the edges on my 3000 grit water stone.
What I was looking for was to see if the thicker handle would make up for the steeper angle in which th edge was factory sharpened in the case of the Mora Robust
This is just the first part of the test... - Развлечения
I can't believe the quality Mora can offer at SUCH a cheap price! It's ridiculous, and anyone who doesn't own a Mora needs to get one right now, no questions asked.
My feelings exactly. You get a great knife the takes a beating, works wood very well and all the for little money
SpartanJohns Don't let the Morakniv company know this, but I would gladly pay double for their knives. As it is, it's such a bargain that no one on the planet should be without one.
Budsygus I would not.... I bought the Bushcraft Black and paid about 50 Euros for it. If it weren't for the price I would really be happy with the knife.
I guess part of why I like them is the fact that I can buy them cheap so if I break them or lose them I don't need to worry too much
What is Mora for fixed blades - that is Opinel for folding knifes. Best buy! You can not beat that! :)
Very nice to see a direct comparison.
Excellent vid. I love the comparision. Your reviews have evolved and become so informative, so detailed......I think your a real asset to the community Denis. Well done my brother and keep up the good work.
The Companion is my all-time favorite back-up knive, for food prep en small carving tasks. I put one through various tests and used it untill it was completely dull, resharpening it is so easy! Bought a second one, the first one will go to a person who just begun bushcrafting. Thx for the testing!
Thank you. Glad you liked it...Initially I meant it to be just a short comparison...but then...things kinda got out of hand :))
As they usually do when I play with knives and it's fine...as long as the knives don't get "out of hand: ;)
Nice video. I really like these head to head comparisons.
Nice video. I really like these head to head comparisons.
Thank you! I am glad you liked it
Thanks Craig! I really appreciate that!
Thank you for taking the time...
I think I would like it the other way around...the Robust handle and the Companion edge angle...I do like the 3 mm thick spine but I would like a shallower edge angle.
But I have to admit...the Companion Heavy Duty sounds interesting!
I have two Mora Companion knives having liked the first one so much, I bought another so now, have one in green and one in black. Both stainless steel. I tested my first one the old fashioned way, processing a white tail deer in the field. From gutting, skinning and parting it out. Knife gave optimum results without need for sharpening. I always carry a Buck 301 3 blade folding pocket knife and have since my time growing up and working on farms and ranches. This pocket knife has come in handy so many times that I wouldn't know where to start in offering why you should have one in your pocket every day! I have made it into my 60s now in a life filled with hunting, fishing, canoeing and camping. I have relied entirely on Bic lighters and/or strike anywhere wood matches and have never been without fire. In recent years, I picked up one of the new ferro rods and have used it to start fire a few times. I guess what I'm saying is, be careful where you spend your money. It's easy to get caught up in all the latest and greatest gear but when it comes right down to it, simple and reliable and in your pocket trumps em all in most cases. Just an opinion from a life of knife use "in and out of the BUSH" as they like to call it now days. In scouts, we referred to it as "woods-craft". Be safe and always know how to get back to camp.
I agree with everything you said. First of all...the Mora Ccompanion is one of Mora's best knives when it comes to price/performance. I too used it for hunting(buck) and it did everything without problems.
A BIC lighter will always work. Nowadays I prefer Clipper lighters...they come in bright colors with transparent walls...and you can remove the sparking mechanism if you want. Which can prove useful should you run out of gas....
As for spending money on things you don't need...well...i agree with you on that too...I envy people who do not have this "problem". There are a lot of bushcrafters out there who only have a victorinox and a Mora and they manage to do everything with those...
As for the Robust...the greatest advantage of the Robust is its 3.2 mm thick spine...if you are out bushcrafting/hunting you can do more with a 3.2 mm thick blade than with a 2 mm thick blade...
Lots of people are against batoning pieces of wood and claim this to be part of "the youtube trend". I found this to be simply not true. Whenever I work around the cabin with my girlfriend's dad he uses his knife in combination with a hammer or a piee of wood to make a cut, split something...this was a valuable lesson to me. People who use their knives because they need them not because they are testing, do so without thinking "is this the right tools for the job?"
He had an old buck knife with a gut hook. He broke that gut hook while collecting pine resin. He never cared/complained about it... he ground a new gut hook into the blade...
I have the highest of respect for such people.
I like to test knives and other tools. To be honest, when I go hunting, hiking, camping, you can always find a Mora Companion or the Robust in my backpack.
Great comparison. I liked the video!
Thank you for an interesting review/ comparisson between the two knifes.
More have released a Companion heavy duty version with the same blade thickness as the Robust.
Denis, thanks for these tests. I expect to receive several knives for Christmas including Mora Robust. Will do some serious comparisons against my Jacklore next year. Take care, Ken
Yes...I would have expected the handle to make a huge difference, but it didn't...and surprisingly..buying the Robust made me love the Companion even more...it became part of my Day Bag.
Thank you.
I would say that it boils down to individual preference and the level of experience. Murray Carter got a shaving sharp eddge off a cement block. Cliffstamp sharpened a knife on a brick.
I like to strop all my knives. I find that a steel hone and a strop are the easiest way to keep a knife sharp
When it comes to knives one can't ask for much more than a Mora.
Cheers!
I think that could be interesting...
I am sure you will like the Robust!
Have a good one
Denis
Say Heah Denis, You do great reviews on the Mora's. and I too have my preferences. My Fav. is my Mora 2000, and very often I use my Mora 510 (new version) which is the same blade style as my Classic #1, I actually like the handle better on my Mora 510, But when I made the Sheath safer on my Bokor Black Rold, I took the Tec-Lok off and put a Belt Loop Carry. But the handle snap was a little too big, But still safe. I thought of many ways to tighten it up, By sticking it. But instead I put my Classic #1 through the strap and now I have my Mora Classic #1 attached to my Rold Sheath and it came out Aces. Actually with the Red in the Liners and the Red Handle, It's looking good Amigo. As usual a job well done.
Thank you Markus! Yes...the Companion is a better slicer...and except for the checkering on the handle...it takes the lead!
:) very well put!
My favorite is thin and slick...
Looking at my tests...I was sure that the Robust would be the winner...but not this time..
More to come :)
yes...i understood that...my esee 4 has a 50 degree edge...it is a good "survival" knife, but not the easiest knife to carve with.
thank you...i am glad you liked the video
I think the ESEE is more of a "survival" knife...one that you could beat into a tree and stand on it. For light cutting and carving I would always take a Mora...
If you have any suggestions...I am glad to oblige as soon as I get the time!
Both knives are great cutting tools but aesthetically speaking i like the new Companions overall appearance.
The ones with the shorter handle?
They seem to be more resiliant...but for my hands...they are just uncomfortable for heavier tasks(as in working for more than 5-10 minutes)
Love the vid, very informative for a novice outdoors man. I saw your review on the bushcraft black, then I looked at this one. Now thanks to you I can't decide which one to get! haha what do you recommend?
Hey!
I agree with you. It could benefit from a smaller edge angle...Should I get the time...I will definitely do that!
Thank you! I like it as well..it is definitely a good buy! But what Mora isn't?
wow..that stung! did you come up with it yourself or did someone help you?
Hello Ulrica...
Yes...I guess that any Mora is a good choice...I was wondering about the thicker blade and how it would fare...
Glad you liked it!
Denis
I would say it really depends on the size of the users hand to which knife fills the hand. I have medium hands and my Companion Heavy Duty MG. Thanks for the video!
Hello Denis! Nice video again. I have the robust but not yet the companion. I have some mora´s lying around and just grab the one closest when I getting out ;-) Never thought of compare them. Thank you for sharing! Take care my friend.
Ulrica
You got great videos bro! Subscribed your channel!
Nice comparison with the ESEE, would be interesting if you could touch on some work where it showed its benefit as the higher edge angle does put it significantly behind for any wood carving.
The Robust is definitely a good knife to have and use...just a good all around tool!
Thank you Tito! I try to do them as I would like to see other do them.. I try to give the good and the bad feedbacks...
The ESEE was a "star" guest...a steeper edge that does lend itself to the looks of the knife but cannot outperform a Mora...
:)
Always do! ;)
LG
Denis
Thanks for another fine video. Frankly, if these two knives representated a quantity of food, a mouse could starve on the differences between them. But variety is the spice of life, as the old saying goes.
And of course the 50 degree edge I was talking about, was on the none Mora. My thing between the 2 Moras is, (personal preference) I have a larger hand and the Companion is a bit small for my comfort, but I could still work with it. The HighQ Robust and even the 2000, is a bit more to my personal liking because they fit my hand better. One can always change the edge to their liking also ? Gotta love the Moras for price and quality !
The weather was great! It can do delicate tasks.. It outperforms lots of other knives....but I am not so sure it can outperform the Companion...
Modifying the angle is a good idea...but one might need some time to do that on a stone :)
Excellent video my friend ! And also im glad you have some time off to go in the woods...perfect weather i see! Think the Robust is not ment for delicate cutting, as you said, i also like the Companion Edge when it comes to cutting (delicate or power) but the handle and how it grips the hand almost compensate for that thick blade...think it can be regrind, to the thickness of the companion and maybe even get a nice full flat with a micro convex on it....
the companion is perfectly ok...good grip...not as generous as the Robust but it does the job...no need to change this knife....
As for the Robust...after using it a bit more and thinking about it...I came to the conclusion that I can accept it for what it is
Glad you liked it...
I don't claim to be an expert...just a user...a knife-nutty user! :))
Glad you liked it! I think that in this case the Companion won the race...I am not a fan of the checkering on the handle but other than that....
Thanks....great review. But is your 840 MG the military or the regular model? They sell it in both versions. Thanks.
The knife I have in this video is very old. By the length of the tang I always assumed it is a Mora Companion since the Clippers tang only goes 1/3 into the handle...
This one, the stainless has a slightly longer blade, that would make it the 860, i guess...
kinfe expertise in the wild pretty dope.
My feelings exactly...It did outperform it..the handle is the only thing that the Robust has that is better than the Companion...
Just published the rest of the tests including batoning...
First off: your English is superb. Also a very good comparison of two very practical knives. Just had one question concerning your gear there: what is that watch you're wearing?
Rock on and stay safe out there.
+TheAnonymousSword Thank you!
The watch...it is a collaboration between Casio and Seiko. I stopped wearing it a long time ago. Nowadays I wear Casio Pro Trek PRG 550. I can really recommend this one since I have been wearing it for over 2 years. It is a though solar model and so far the battery is and has always been on fully charged.
Thanks very much, I'll be checking that out.
Helpful video. Do you know if the Mora Companion HD is the same knife as the Robust but a different color?
I always thought it to be so...The HD is in OD and the Robust is in grey.
There is an older version of the Companion with a 2 mm thick spine and a new version of the companion with a 2.5 mm thick spine.
But as far as I know the 3.2 thick grey one is a Robust and the 3.2 mm OD one is a Mora Companion HD.
I can only agree with you! 100%
the robust is a good knife. however i preffer the 746 much more..the handle on the 746 does what I expected the handle of the robust to do...
I like the blade thickness of the robust...and the weight...it is a nice knife to take along. Very reliable too...
I had the last version of the rubust and it failed me in sheth retention and it was to fast to rust even for a carbon blade. I hope this one is beter. good test man.
Thank you! I think maybe the next batch might be better....Nobody's perfect...even Mora :)
I kind of like how the Companion seemed to perform over the Robust in this video. I kept thinking that you were going to accidentally hit the stationary knife in the log with your hand! Haha. If it was me, I know I would have gotten cut :)
Id like to now see how both of the Mora's fare in battoning.
Mora knives are awesome! Best bang for the buck!
Hi m8t! been waiting for this test!
I really like Robust but first time that i saw it known that they should bring the grind up some more so it would be thinner. but that is just my opinion...
Great video. Question though. Why put a micro bevel on the scandi grind? I just ordered the robust. Is the scandi grind it cimes with not good? Thanks!
If you use a knife like I showed here in the video and the blade does not have a micro bevel, only the 12.5 degree per side it comes with from the factory, it might get damaged.
the micro bevel is there to protect it.
for regular tasks you would probably not need a micro bevel...unless you would cut some very hard wood(knots, fatwood)
SpartanJohns When a knife, comes out of the factory with a micro bevel,is because it earns time for the factory to create the edge. The only way to protect your edge, make it more resistant to micro chips or rolling and improve how the edge holds its sharpness,is to put a convex edge!
Leaderilaos Chaqal a micro bevel is not the same as a secondary bevel. I like convex grinds but for some tasks I prefer v edges. most all of my knives have a micro bevel. it worked out fine for me so far
SpartanJohns Of course but if you convex that micro bevel, the edge becomes much stronger. That means less chips and rolls and maybe better edge retention! When it comes to knives, everything is personal taste.I just say my experience through the years.Your videos are very interesting, keep up the good work.Have fun!
The Robust is surely a heavier duty Mora...it does the job...however, i think it can be improved.
It's definitely one of those Bushcraft things, which of course there is a multitude of preferences and they're all personal, do you want a easy carver / prep knife or a more heavy, strong, versatile, multi-task knife ? In the best of all worlds - both ! :) Very good video, I enjoyed the view points and thought options. Although 50 degree knife edge is probably a bit too much for my liking. :)
Thanks for the comparison! Maybe we could say: thin and slick OR thick and robust :o)
Danke Stephan!
LG
Denis
Mora=Good and Affordable!
Cheers!
Companion. The handle on the old Companions and Clippers were the same. Iinitially I thought this was a Clipper but then I checked with a magnet to see how far the tang goes up the handle.
Mora COmpanion Heavy Duty has the same 3.2mm blade thickness as the Mora Robust.
The only difference between the Robust and Companion HD is the colour of the handle
the companion has a longer tang than the clipper, 3/4 into the handle stick tang as opposed too a stub tang 1/4 of the way into the handle
Moin Denis! :-)
11:54 Hahahaha....keep it real,baby....keep it real!!! :-DDD
Mora sharpness is magic....ESEE shame on you! *LOL* ;-)
Great vid,my friend...have a great december! :-)
Peace
Stephan
I'd go with the robust over companion. More steel, and also thicker for Bushcrafting and light to moderate batoning. Not quite a survival knife, but it would do alright in short term survival situation.
i think it would do very well even in the long run....i still have the knife and still split wood with it.. it is still in top shape
You really remind me of les stroud, your look and your behavior. :D
:)) Never seen myself as a Les Stroud lookalike :))
Excellent video for anyone that is familiar with Bushcraft, Morakniv, edge angles, and sharpening.
3000 grit is very fine - stropping isn't even necessary at that point, just saying.
I wish Mora would put a longer tang in their knives, I wouldn't mind getting one like that.
i guess u could wrap the handle of companion with paracord for better grip, if u didnt want to grind down the robust.
Lol, good fun making this vid...Pretty similar this two, anyway...
Hi,, Which model? Carbon? it is not indicated,, Heavy Duty stainless steel (12c27) vs Robust Carbon (1075)?
I believe the "Robust" are all "Carbon" -- 12c27 is a good steel (used by Opinel) but I prefer Carbon (HRC 60 or more) for its sharpness, ease of sharpening, etc. in addition to the fine stone, although the Mora are well sharpened, out of the factory, I am switching to leather! (je fais un passage au cuir, je ne sais comment le dire en anglais) I polish with leather.
All Mora's are a bargain! at the unbeatable value for money, I will buy a Robust!
Note: you didn't do a little batonage test?
SM - France
When the Robust came out it was only in carbon steel. Nowadays you have the new version of the Robust and the Mora Companion HD which is in SS or Carbon steel.
I like the carbon steel version for bushcrafting....it does sharped a bit easier and does hold an edge, in wood a bit better. it is a bit tougher, imo.
I kept Moras sharp only using a leather strop for a very long time.
As for batoning...The fixblades I use nowadays have all been tested and batoned. It is a very easy way to see if there is something wrong with the heat treatment.
Glad you liked the video
Let me get this straight. Your comparing 2 knifes main difference is blade angle and you decided to sharpen them to the exact SAME angle before the test? Hmmm, I would of rather them with factory edge and seen what they can do.. I'm pretty confused after watching this video.. hahaha
glad i could help keep you in your natural state....hahaha
SpartanJohns good one
Not an honest comparison between the knives in that you changed the designed angle of the companion knife. That said both knives are excellent, as far as the grip, that depends on the size of your hand.
I love Mora knives but having a discreet Opinel nº10 folder in my pocket I don't feel the need of them. I mean, nobody sees a knife in my belt while walking out there and if I ever needed battoning for survival both would perform equally bad.
+Perico De Lospalotes A fixed will always be better than a folder for splitting wood.
I also like opinels. I never ahd the no 10...only the 9. i like it very much.
SpartanJohns I have several Muela 440c fiixed knives but I almost don't take them outdoors. Since I discovered the folding saws like the Bahco Laplander carryig a machete or a small axe seems not very useful to me. Less effort, less time wasted, safer (no harmful cuts far from the city).
+Perico De Lospalotes The Laplander is definitely a usefull and safe tool. I carry mine into the woods every time
SpartanJohns Yes, when I started using one I thought: how can I been wasting until now so much energy and time chopping what I can get with few movements back and forward?
Hacha de Huesca and Opinel number eight, twenty euros total.
Micro bevel? Why ? It's true test is on its original edge ! But that's my opinion only . As far as I can say all Mora's are great for the task there built for . Right tool for the right job ! Appart from that good reviews , btw the angle of the grinds make a difference usually the thinner blade wins on small tasks etc etc xpeacex
This was a long time ago. Nowadays I shy away from putting microbevels on Moras. Nowadays I like the smalles edge angles possible. for splitting wood I have thick blades but even those I like to keep with thin grinds(as thin as they can take it-see my esee 5 video if you care)
Thank you
SpartanJohns thanks for reply and I have subscribed and look forward to watching more on your channel . God bless xpeacex
Fa un tutorial pe romana in care sa arati cum se face un foc fara chibrite, brichete .Cu lemn.
That might be a long time coming...I would use a different knife should I ever kill a deer ;)
I am waiting for the clip, in which you will be skining a deer.
Cool comment at ruclips.net/video/3ryDpswQ6Rs/видео.html. (I can feel like this one's not really hand filling, but it is) Thanks for the reviews man.
te rog sa faci acest video si in română
as putea sa il fac sub forma de "table top"...daca e ok...

Why?
"Gay"? Just one word? This is how you decided to let the world know? While I think that "coming out" is good, and I must tell you: your family...they know! Not just by the way you behave but also by the way you eat a banana, I think you should have, at least, written a full sentence. And since I have seen that you did that on more than my video..I decided to let you be...so don't worry, I won't tell anyone! ;)
you really have nothing else better to do, do you?
since when is cutting dry wood funny? hahaha nice video though,
cutting any kind of wood is funny...if you are into knives and blade geometries... ;)
