Been crabbing like this since i was a kid. The reel is a nice touch. Reccomend tying the bait directly into the line rather than hanging, it holds on a little better. Necks are expensive, try bull lip or salted eel. I usually run a 1/4 mile line with an additional chain in the middle.

You can get bull lip from a butcher and sounds like salted eel has gotten expensive due to scarcity.

This method is nothing new this is a Maryland way of life. And a lot of female crabs. Should throw them back. They make future crabs.
