Thank you to ProJared and AVGN for letting me borrow clips from your reviews.
Welcome back to The Game Collection, I am SuperDerek and today I'm going to do things a little bit differently for lucky episode number 13. Today I'm going to as you a question: Is Hydlide really such a bad game?
"Hydlide.I hate Hydlide. I hate this game so much."
"Eugh! Hydlide! Just saying the name gives you a gag reflex like you're about to hurl! Hyyydliiiide, sounds so wretched and foul!"
This game has been ripped apart by not only the Angry Video Game Nerd, not only by ProJared, but by what seems to be the entire game reviewing community at large. So why would I stick my credibility on the line for a game that's just so unanimously hated? Well, it's because this game is really significant for reasons that may surprise you. Well we've got a lot of ground to cover, so let's get started.
I am SuperDerek, and this is Hydlide!
Hydlide is an action RPG for the NES that was released in the US in 1989, This game is actually a precursor to several similar action RPGs such as The Legend of Zelda and Y's. Due to unfortunate localization timing it was released in the wake of The Legend of Zelda, and as a result is often compared to it's much more refined cousin.
The story of Hydlide is the basics of basic. In the kingdom of Fairyland, one of the 3 jewels that was holding a demon at bay was stolen by a thief. This allowed a demon, Voralis, to escape his bonds and return to Fairyland, bringing with him and army of monsters with which to terrorize the land. Upon his triumphant return his first act was to abolish the monarchy by splitting the princess into 3 fairies.
That's when our hero, Jim, finally decides that it's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum. Unfortunately it becomes immediately evident that Jim, during his time as a knight, must have spent far more time chewing bubblegum than actually kicking ass, as even the lowliest of creatures in Fariyland can easily put an end to his quest.

I remember when I was 13 biking 10 km to my nearest VG store (I lived in the boonies). I rented Hydlide, biked 10 km back home, played Hydlide for 30 minutes and biked back to the store to exchange it for something else - anything else. I got a lot of exercise that day all thanks to Hydlide.

... let's be real, if your closest VG is only 10km away you are definitely not in the boonies. When I was young my closest VG store was just over an hours drive away by car, about ~75km away. Even the nearest bulk store, like WalMart, was still just under and hour away and was probably about 65km away. 10km is a walk in a park compared to that.
The really odd thing is we had high-speed internet O.O at that farm. I don't have High-Speed internet at the farm I live at now and I am only 15 minutes away from a VG store by car and 10 minutes away from a major chain store and I am in walking distance to the nearest suburb, about 6-8km away. We have to use 4G internet and luckily we got a great plan and for around a 100$ a month we have unlimited internet. However, it's not super fast or reliable, but better than dial-up lol. Billing also scales, so if we just don't really use the internet, under 10GB DL a month we pay ~30$ and for 35GB it's ~70$. It's not a great service but it's leagues better than what everyone else around me is getting, so I guess I can't complain too much.

I have never been a fan of action RPGs that use the "run into enemies" style, but I love seeing people stick up for hated games. I think you may have to try a lot harder to defend the Sega Saturn sequel to Hydlide.

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  10 лет назад +7

Hah! Well that would first require me owning a Sega Saturn.. Speaking of which, if anyone would love to see me utterly fail at defending Virtual Hydlide, feel free to send me a Sega Saturn and a copy of the game. ;)

Virtual Hydlide isn't actually a sequel, it's a remake of the original Hydlide, and is really not all that bad either... Horrific frame rate, ugly graphics and bad camera withstanding. I found the entire game to be quite playable/slightly enjoyable for what it is and beatable in about 3-4 hours with a guide. Would I recommend it to people though? Hell no.

I think the only ones I liked that used that system were the early Ys games but then again it was done a bit better with you having to go either off center or you can also just hit them with their backs turned either way you do it right you don't take damage

I really like it when reviewers dig a little deeper into a game and it's history and see the game from a different perspective, instead of just looking at the surface badness of a game.
    Well done!

Hydlide really did get overshadowed because by the time it was localized, it was released during an era where there were far better games like Zelda, Metroid and Final Fantasy. This was from the PC-88 era of Japanese computers, so it was quite primitive. But by the time we got the game, the video game console generation was on the verge of releasing the Super Nintendo so it was just to late to the party for people to even care bout it any more. But its influence can not be understated. Its literally one of the pioneer project of action rpgs and a historical piece of history that I think people should check out at least once. Also the NES version to be fair was quite a great deal different then some of othe other ports which improved upon the audio and gameplay mechanics. There is one other game called Persues which predated it and is the true begining of action rpgs, but lets pretend that never existed lol. This was actually the first game that was some what approachable.

Hey Super Derek, very interesting! But the box of Dragon Slayer you show there at 5:45 is not the box of the first Dragon Slayer game, but the box of Dragon Slayer 6, Legend of Heroes, which is a much later game, as it's from 1990. (At least the MSX version which you showed.) That is actually a great and huge game (5 floppy disks as you show):) Dragon Slayer (1) is only a 32kB ROM cartridge.

The story about dragon slayer and hydlide wasn't the only time such things happened, there is a famous example with final fantasy and dragon quest III wich introduced classes in console RPGs for the first time. The time between the releases of those two games was less than two months, and the class system in dragon quest III was the best by far! But I don't think it had anything to do with developpers spying on each other, but rather it was the fact that their inspiration material was the same: tabletop RPGs and to a lesser extent their adaptation on computers. Just like the first step for dragon slayer and hydlide was to introduce a hero exploring a dungeon, the next logical step for final fantasy and dragon quest III at the time was to introduce a class system.

I just played this game and completed it for the 1st time in the past 2 days...... you know, i actually had FUN, the game was fun, i liked it quite a lot. Was it really that good? no not really, very simplistic and unfair combat/health and it's annoying that you spend so much time just waiting for Jims health to regenerate, but still i enjoyed it. would play again.
EDIT: 2 days later and i completed it again.. Just felt like playing it more since it was so short.

I absolutely LOVE Ys. I never made the connection about Hydlide inspiring Ys's battle system. That alone makes me want to play it (even though the later Ys games abandoned the bump combat system, I thought it was a really unique battle system that I hadn't seen anywhere else before -- but I won't even try to make the argument that Ys 1&2 are better than something like The Oath in Felghana, 'cause that game is a masterpiece)

In 1999, the best version of Hydlide was released for Windows in Japan. In addition to attack and defend mode, a new mode called Overdrive was added. After you press the “O” key, Jim kills enemies in one hit, gets a lot more experience with each enemy killed, and recharges health a lot faster and can recharge anywhere.
I can see speed runners having lots of fun with that, if only they knew about it!

I always knew that this game was from the infancy of RPGs. Perhaps thats why everyone ripped it another one, it was outdated after english releases, and by that time more complex games existed. It would probably feel like if Max Payne as it is, if it would be released next week.

Honestly a lot of early fantasy games from the early-mid 1980s have a very “DND” like feel to them. Whenever I boot up Hydlide or Gauntlet or Dragon Warrior I just can’t help being glad it’s the year 2018 and that being a nerd is cool now so I don’t have to worry about never getting a girlfriend.

The NES just got the game way too late, and on top of that got a rather lazy straightforward port, which is a shame. Another reason why region-locking and non-global releases have always been, and always will be, a bad idea. Especially if you are developing for a new platform for which all the tricks to get the most out of the hardware aren't known yet, or can't make use of them because you deal with the limitations of porting, you run the risk of falling behind on the competition.
Thanks for doing this honest review, and recognising the game for what it has meant for the genre. :)

Alright, I'm willing to look over its shortcomings because of its history and I will respect what it means in the Action-RPG genre. The history still however does not excuse the shitty game that America got, it really doesn't! I live by the phrase "quit while your ahead." In some cases and Hydlide should have followed that advice. It didn't have to port the game over after 5 years without some MASSIVE editing and updating.

Overall a pretty fair take. Time explains a lot. Just look at a lot of PSX games that are considered classic.
If they are 3D; chances are that they are only fondly remembered due to nostalgia, most of them would not play well AT ALL compared to newer games. This makes perfect sense - a lot of things we take for granted just didn't exist then. Camera issues were rampant - it had a reason that SUper Mario 64 used Lakitu as a camera standin to explain that very concept!
Horse carriages are not STOOPID LOLOL just because cars exist. They are cleverly designed and an important step in making cars. Doesn't mean I want to ride in one, though.

I played this game the first time in earnest upon its recent support on Retro Achievements, and...it's far from the worst I played. I've played trash that is so much worse, Hydlide doesn't even rank. I used a guide to find everything, but I'd do this for anything this old. All in all it was a worthy "afternoon" type experience. I have little desire to revisit the game but I don't feel my time was wasted, either.

I do enjoy playing Hydlide (especially on days when I’m too busy to actually sit down for enough time to get very far into an epic RPG like Zelda or Dragon Warrior), but I won’t deny that the looping 10-15 second Indiana Jones music and the fact that the game is crammed into a little window surrounded by UI does irk me a bit.

I guess you got the point across, but that's not how bank switching works. :)
All(*) NES games have two ROM chips, one for code and one for graphics data (* though a lot of "later" titles would swap the graphics chip for a RAM chip). Bank switching allows more data on the ROM chips, not additional chips.

It didn't age very well at all, even by the time it was ported to the NES. Compare it to the Ys games which have aged much better for their time. Even then, the Ys series has gotten far more polished over the years. I'm not even talking about the changes in the battle system, I'm referring to the remakes of the first game that still utilized the Bumb attack system.
The things you described to fix Hydlide were things that were in Ys. IMO, you were describing a Ys game to some degree there.
I'm a newer fan of the series since I didn't have a Turbografix 16, and my first introductions to the series were with Ys Origins and YS I and II chronicles. I have seen gameplay footage of the Turbografix version of I and II and to me it looks like it holds up well since I like a lot of 16 bit action-rpg games like The Soul Blazer trilogy.
They made further changes, some far more drastic. Compare the most recent Ys Seven and Memories of Celceta to Ys origins, Ys Oath in Felghana, and Ys Ark of Naphishtim. And compare those to the ones before them. Even Ys III was quit a departure.
It hasn't been perfect, not every game has been a gem (like Ys V), but the series has consistently gotten better and better.
I think it would be fair to give a few concessions to Hydlide if it had actually improved much. Projared reviewed some it's sequels, and while you can see a bit of improvement in Super Hydelide, it had features that just did not look fun having to deal with like hunger and harsh weight limits. The latest Hydlide game was a remake of the first one and it looked atrocious.
If the the bump attack system is something you find fun, then the original Ys games far surpass it. For Ys I and II I'd recommend either the turbografix version, or Ys I and II Chronicles for the psp or pc.

OK I didn't know the part about it being five years old by the time it was released. My first memory with this game is playing it at a friend's house, years after playing the original LoZ. I remember my friend sort of laughing at my wanting to play it. From the first few minutes of playing, I was completely baffled by the combat system and what the game wanted me to do. I stuck with it, eventually beating it years later, but it always sat with me as being, well, a crappy Zelda clone. While I would still say it's pretty bad, knowing that it actually preceded Zelda by that long changes my opinion of it.

Great video. Good to finally see a balanced perspective on Hydlide. Yes, the game has aged terribly. But it still deserves respect for shaping the action RPG genre.
The only disappointment was that this video didn't call out Zelda for being a Hydlide rip-off... Not that it's a bad thing, since Zelda improved on it vastly.

Except it isn't a rip off. Only an idiot would think a game with a VASTLY different mechanical approach to it is a rip off(even the barebones plot of each game isn't similar to one another!)

Hydlide is an artifact of its time. By modern standards, it's awful, but it probably shouldn't be criticized much simply because it is so old. That said, there was no reason to port it to the NES and that port can be considered a bad game.

I owned this game in 1990 and it was awful by the standards of that time too.
I let my friends borrow it, and they all hated it.
We criticized and hated it because we knew it was crap even when we were kids.

Thanks for the review. Personally, for me, it is that bad. Starting the game so weak and taking 30 minutes to level up to level 2, just to be slightly less weak means 99% of players are going to just give up. By the time I was aware of this game, there were already fun RPGs and action RPGs, like Faxanadu and Dragon Warrior, where the game mechanics were much better. Sure, those games could be frustrating at times, but Hydlide starts the player at the maximum frustration level.

I remember looking at the cover art and thought I would be playing a game like Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, and Crystalis. I saved my money only to go to Woolworths and buy this piece of trash. I felt so duped. This game and Ultima Exodus were some of my early RPG's regrets.

Just discovered your channel and am enjoying it. I have one nitpick, however. You are pronouncing Ys wrong by pronouncing it "Yeese". It's pronounced more like the "ice" in the name "Maurice". Here is a video where it is pronounced in the Ys 1 Turbografx intro: ruclips.net/video/QpqiVA8pXw4/видео.html. Skip around one minute in to hear it. I highly recommend checking out the Ys series. Ys Chronicles is an amazing intro to the series if you haven't tried it. It's on PC and PSP. The whole series is in english now that Aeon Genesis put out a translation to 5, and the fan translation/dub of 4's Turbografx version was released awhile ago. Would be sweet to see more Ys love on youtube :)

Aw darn it! I wasn't sure how to pronounce it so I took a shot in the dark, but I figured someone would correct me if I butchered it bad enough. ;)
Believe me, Ys is definitely in my list of game series to tackle. It's just a matter of picking a good starting point, and then actually buying it, and having the hardware to do so... I'll look into grabbing a copy of Chronicles. :)

    • @blarblegarble1009

got it as a kid, could never figure out what to do. Even worse, you die so fast, can't really figure the game out. I can see it as hair pulling. Now as an adult, I finally got it again, to maybe figure it out. The leveling is bad, still die so easily. But the game is great with Game Genie codes, can beat it in 10-15 minutes. Too bad magic is useless, you can kill enemies with it but doesn't give experience, another big issue there. Can't use magic even on the dragon or final boss.

I don't hate Hydlide. I respect its importance in gaming history, and I used to legitimately enjoy it as a kid. What people don't realize is that the combat system, while clunky as all heck, is actualy fun once you master it. Using defend mode is part of the strategy.
But I admit, the game aged very poorly. Even in its own time. Merely three years after its original release it was already obsolete. I don't hold that against it though, as there was literally no standard for that genre at the time.
It's a clunky first step for an infant genre. All that said, I HATE the music, which is allegedly from Hydlide II.

  • @faalonikdovah982
    @faalonikdovah982 10 лет назад

Hated it after spending $50!(that was $2.50 allowance every week in '88....do the math)
But when your 7 and only have 3 NES carts you play'd that shit till you new every cryptic
puzzle those sadistic programmers could throw at you. Use everything on everything.
Quick question.....Does anybody actually miss grinding? I know I do and I'm not ashamed to admit it. :P

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  10 лет назад

Ouch. Yeah I wouldn't have been a happy camper in your shoes either. I too remember the days of $2 a week allowances, but I never had the patience to save up for anything more than a Ninja Turtles action figure or two.
Personally, I don't miss grinding, mostly because I never stopped playing the games that require it though. :)
