What are your honest thoughts about Faxanadu?
Do we still get games with titles this weird?
If Faxanadude made balloon animals at your birthday, what would he make?
Share, like, comment, subscribe... I appreciate it greatly! -Chris
This game was A childhood memory that I remember fondly. I loved it.
I rented this game back in the day a few times with the intentions of getting far, but I never had a manual and would just get frustrated and wish I had rented Festers Quest instead. Faxanadu would make a frustrating balloon shape.
NESComplex i got my copy in 2004 i believe. And at first it did not Appile to me. But when i got at little in to the game, i had such a blast. I loved the aspect of powering up and scout ever place for secrets and getting so excitet, when i found them. This is a very underated game. Because it is so fun, specially if you love does kind of Games
NESComplex I never played it back in the day, however I picked it up recently on NES and Wii VC. I’ve found I really enjoy it (but I also like Zelda II, so take my opinion with a grain of salt).
Frustrating balloon shape? lol Like a Faxanahedron?
*I absolutely loved this game back then.* I remember being stunned by the fact that EACH piece of equipment you'd get would change your appearance and for the time, it was revolutionary. You started as an almost naked dude with a toothpick and ended up as a mighty knight with a full plate armor and a shiny sword.
Possibly the most underrated game ever released on NES. Nintendo needs to bring Faxanadu back.
It’s a long shot they’d ever bring it back but that would be super interesting to see what it’d look like now
NESComplex Yeah, I'd say the chances of Nintendo ever bringing it back are pretty close to nil.
@@MattyIcecubes Nintendo didn't make it, Hudson Soft did.
I played this game so much over and over. Did you ever figure out that if you screen reset the eye creatures in the first area you can save up enough to buy an end game magic spell from the shop? One shot bosses most of the game haha
@@subzero8679 yeah and oddly didn't make a certain someones Hudson list. Should have been on his list as an S!
i love faxanadu! and i always thought the shopkeeper that smokes and sells keys looks like Bill Murray from the 80's lol
You are totally right!! Hahaha. He does!
Nello. I sell tools.
Hahahaha... I know you!
What would you like?
Come to buy? What would you like?
I'll trade you this bottle of eye drops for that broadsword....
Hilarious. I need a pick axe and a rope. I have 550 golds.
Hilarious. I always read "SNIELD" when I was a kid.
There were many NES games that I loved.... Faxanadu was my all time fav. The memories this game brings back is insane!
Faxanadu is, to me, the most fun NES game I've ever played. It's always great to go back and give it another go.
Really? It's your #1 NES game? That's awesome!
There's a reason why I keep 2 carts of this on the shelf... in case one fails me!
Awesome! TRUE FAN ALERT!
Glad someone is showing Faxanadu some love. I got this game when I was a kid Solely on the art work and then loved it! :)
I don’t hear too much love for this game, but the comments seem to agree with us. Most people really like Faxanadu
Amen to that, loved the game as a kid. Got stuck on thr maze parr
I played this around 1992 when I was around 12. Chose it solely on the cool name and tiny screenshot from a leaflet that came with the NES. Love it.
Games were really a gamble back then without fun video reviews, but it’s a good one!!!
This game is the reason I got into grinding.
It’s an acquired taste. But grinding never bothered me
It can be oddly addictive sometimes if you get into the "zone" :)
Shortly after the first town, in the beginning of the game, there is a shop that sells very powerful gear that would be intended for much later in the game and it's way too expensive. I once grinded day and night until i bought all of it and then demolished the 1st half of the game. The idea that the game gave you the option to buy this stuff early even though you could never afford it without grinding was fascinating to me and it's one of the most significant moments in my young gaming life.
@@Filmblanc heck yeah acquire death magic within the first hour or so of gameplay. 😁
Soooooo glad that you're making videos again!!! Keep up the great work!!!
Thank you! I'm glad you're enjoying them. Im really excited about the next video
Way back in the day I stayed at a buddies and we rented this. He fell asleep and I stayed up all night until I beat it. It still holds up well today.
“back in the day”... I see what you did there. You beat it the first night? You’re a better gamer than I am
I remember playing this when I was really young. I had no clue what I was doing but it was fun. This is nostalgic
Thanks for watching Justin! Bringing back that nostalgia is my main goal
This is such a classic. I remember the password system being bugged and having to leave my NES on a few days until I beat it.
That's the main thing I remember that passwords wouldn't work. Lol
Finally a decent review of this game .. been playing it since I was 8
Thank you! Yeah great game with great memories
My dad got this game when i was a kid and i used to watch him play it... i used to find the game a bit creepy but strangely captivating whenever i would try to play it i never got very far... i used to make it out the village but then get destroyed by the monsters... i never even made it to the 1st boss when i was a kid
The RUclips algorithm brought this video to my attention. Maybe RUclips knows I really like this game.
Nice video!
Hahaha. I think so... maybe it knows you’ll really like this channel :-)
I still love Faxanadu up to this day! And I still play it through every now and then. There's something about that music too that is awesome
The composer is very talented! I agree. Not many know it was written by a woman, not as common in those days
Deathtwich Same. I love this game so much. Time to turn on the emulator and play!
I was also a bit suprised finding out that Castlevania Symphony Of The Night's composer was a woman too! I've completed the game and still listen to the soundtrack quite often. Sometimes I just load a save and go through all of the areas and put the volume very high. It's pretty cool
Dee Williams Yeah thank goodness for emulators! Although I still have Faxanadu as original cartridge I play it and other games with emulators a lot. You can find all those old gems and different old games you can't get anywhere anymore!
I’m the same. I have the physical carts but Raspberry Pi is just so convenient on a modern TV.
Videos are so well edited and put together with a genuine sense of appreciation and love for the source material with added humor that doesn’t seem forced. Always a joy. 👍
Thank you so much! It’s a lot of work and it means so much that you appreciate them! Thank you for the kind comment!
Your comeback is much welcomed. Your style of content is unique and original and much loved. Keep up the good work.
I really appreciate your comment! You have no idea... i work really hard and comments like yours make it all worth it
I love Faxanadu!!!! It's such an under appreciated NES game.
Good to see you making vids again bro. I get a feeling of nostalgia when I watch them, which is a great thing. 11/10 golds!
Love them golds... Thank you for watching them. That's awesome that my videos can give you that nostalgic feeling.
I had no idea legacy of the Wizard was connected to Faxanadu . I had it when I first started collecting retro games but ended up selling it because my copy didn’t work that great no matter how good I cleaned it. I need to get this game again . Great video man, I’ve really missed this series .
Yeah I learned a lot about it while making this! It gave me a greater appreciation for the game and it’s history
I learned long ago that the games were somehow connected. I have no idea how I learned that and may implanted a memory farther back than when I actually learned it.
I didn't know either. Luckily, Legacy of the Wizard is a very affordable game.
really happy to see you're making videos once again. thanks
Thank you! I hope you enjoy them
This game is so nostalgic. I liked this game. I remember going to my local blockbuster and rented this game thee. I had no idea what the game was like. It really surprised how well it was designed. So eccentric and creative and so different than any other game!!!
Faxanadu is one of my favorite NES games. There is something about the atmosphere of it which has stayed with me since childhood, and revisiting and playing all the way through again as an adult, I find that the gameplay still holds up. I love the soundtrack and visual style, as well as the somewhat strange setting and story with the elves, dwarves, life tree and meteors.
I have a soft spot for these side scrolling adventure/RPG hybrids, I loved Zelda 2 as well, and in spite of its flaws, even Simon's Quest. But Faxanadu is my favorite.
You said “atmosphere” and that totally nails it! That really is what sets this apart
Beat this one a few years back, and now I want to play it again! Thanks for the great video and content. :)
Thanks Shaun! I've always loved this game and i don't hear too many people talk about it
Man, SO GLAD to have you back here! Funny, I've mentioned Faxandu in my last NES Hidden Gems Video. I love the beautiful music in this game. BTW: In PAL regions, it is the only game of that series on the NES.
(Marcel)
Hey Marcel! Thank you! I’m glad to be back... 3 videos this month! Woo hoo. It is a hidden gem for sure! The music really is underrated. It was composed by a female composer... that’s rare NOW and was exceedingly rare then!
This was one of my favs as a kid and a few years ago when you reviewed it, It made me wanna play it so bad. Now it’s in regular rotation for my NES. Great to see you back man.
Thank you! It’s good to be back!!!
I like the setup of your game room in the background! Looks sharp!
Thank you... i dont have a ton of space where im currently living so i cant set everything up the way i want, but im happy with what i have here. Thank you... i'm glad it looks good on camera :-D
Happy to see this series again! You put it together very well, Faxandu is a solid game!
Thank you! Thanks for watching my little video
appreciate the shots of box and manual thrown in, this adds atmosphere
Great review! This was one of my favorites in the 80's that everyone seems to forget about.. I just picked up a NES again and have a copy of Faxanadu on the way!!
your videos are very good. I just wanted to let you know that I've been subscribed for years and I am rooting for you. your humor is good.
Thank you for all those kind words. I'm glad you appreciate my humor! Thank you for supporting me all these years...
Stoked to see this video up man! Keep making new content brother. Your vids are some of my faves!
Thank you so much!!! I really appreciate it! Comments like this make my day!
glad to see you making vids again man, keep it up \m/
I will Dude! Thanks for watching!
So happy you are making videos again!
TRobotMike hell yeah
Thanks man! I’m happy to be back too! Thanks for sticking with me
RUclips told me this video would spark joy in this one. It has done its job.
The main thing I remember about this game from my childhood was gaming the system at the start. The king will give you gold any time you have 0 gold, so if you get gold and spend the entirety of it on supplies in town you can go back and get more gold.
Ah yeah! The infinite gold trick.
NESComplex “Golds”.
I’m about to dive into this. Looking forward to a long sesh lol. Great video!
OMG I didn't know you were making videos again. So so excited. I was watching the "Why We Retro" documentary, seen you and wanted to watch some old vids. Definitely a happy day for me.
Hey Eric! Yep. I’m back at it again. Aaron and I are working together quite a bit behind the scenes too. It’s gonna be fun
NESComplex That's really exciting. I been watching some old RetroLiberty episodes too. Really excited, Can't wait to see what you guys come up with
I finally was able to pick up a copy of Faxanadu at a retro convention last week after many people telling me I would love it. I remember seeing this game on the shelves quite a bit back in the day and the cover art literally made me never wanna pick it up and look at the back to see what kind of game it is and that's a shame because after watching this game looks amazing! Loved the way you presented it and I about lost it when you sang the mantra 🤣🤣🤣. Really excited to try the game soon. Thanks for the video!
Glad to see you back! Before I even watch the video I just wanted to say still own my copy with box and I purchased it on Wii virtual console before it shut down. Such a fun game.
That is rare man... not many of us have our original childhood copies of anything. I kept many of mine too... but Faxanadu wasn't one of them... lol
Excelent! Im happy to see that this channel is back !
Thanks Juan and thank you for watching. Many more videos in the works too...
You reviewed two games I remember playing but didn't know their name!! Thank you so much brought me good memories!!
That’s awesome! Glad I could help
Dear Mr Complex,
Good to see you back! Keep up the great work!
Love,
An old time fan!
Thank you so much! Thanks for watching and commenting :). I appreciate it so much
Awesome vid! Happy ur back
Glad to be back
I definitely need to take a look at this one again. Great review!
Thank you! Just give it a fair shot. It is slow at first
Dude just like everyone else I'm glad you're back. You're one of the few current youtubers I really enjoy watching. Please keep it up 😁
That is such a great compliment! Thank you! I really appreciate it and i hope you enjoy everything i've planned too
NESComplex I'm sure whatever it is I will enjoy it. Hopefully a "time machine" is somewhere there in the future too hint hint lol.
I have 2 more Time Machine scripts written and ready to go! Just have a few other videos on deck first
I really like this channel because you talk about classic gems like this. Seriously, don't think I'm subbed to any so-called "Major gaming channels" that ever even acknowledged Faxanadu's existence. My best friend and I used to race our bikes to his house after school each day to pop this sucker in and play as much as possible before I had start heading home before dark. We were stuck for so long on some of the most basic parts like figuring out where to go after getting the wing boots etc.
Thank you Fred! Those early days of the NES and riding bikes to friends houses. I think we all can relate. I know you sharing that brought back memories for me.
Ah, that intro music 😍 This will always be my fav NES game. My Dad and I played this together back in the late 80s, and I just played and beat it again last weekend. Love the graphics, the music, and the weird but cool story!
Also the mantra chant you did was hilarious 😂
Great to see you back on youtube
Thank you! I’m having a blast. I hope you’re enjoying it too
You know how happy it makes me to see you still
Making videos 6 years later? Awesome bro, hope life is great
Thank you George! Life is going well now thank you! I really don’t deserve kind compliments like that but WOW you made my day!
NESComplex ain’t it crazy to get nostalgic about RUclips videos that were made for completely different nostalgia reasons? Watching your videos doesn’t just bring me back to my childhood like it used to, now it brings me back to
My early 20s when I really wanted to be a part of this community. Listening to AllGenGamers and Operation Killscreen Podcast. You were always one of my favorite youtubers bro. I wanted to become a teacher like you, life and some lackluster choices have gotten in the way of that goal, but I haven’t given up. These videos definitely take me back to a different time in my life tho
Glad to see you're back!! thank you for the content
Thank you so much for watching!
I've been on a retro kick lately, and I just want to say I've loved your videos. They've been incredibly helpful in choosing new games to try. Faxanadu was by far one of the best I had never played before.
Thank you for writing and letting me know. I’m glad they’re pointing you toward some retro gold.
I had no idea you were making content again. Awesome!
Thank you Nathan! I’ve been back about a month. 3 videos in with more to come for sure! I’m excited
I always loved "Is it fun?" This video picks right up where you left off. I consider myself a veteran NES player (I'm 34) but somehow I've never played this game. Now I think I will. Thanks man!
Ya! You gotta give it a go. It’s not too expensive either $10ish
You had me pretty nervous at the beginning of this video.. was sensing a real sarcastic tone toward the story and the blinking woes of the cast of characters.. (you'd be blinking a lot too if your wells had all dried up!).. but I loved that you mentioned the side note that this game is related to Legacy of the Wizard, another of my absolute favorites. I can breathe easy knowing that you do think this game is fun.. well done, sir.. thanks for another fun video.
You couldn't tell? I'm glad there was some ambiguity there
I love this game, it was one of those nice surprises back in the day when we got so many badly made games. I got this for Christmas 89 and it was perfect timing as I had already beat the previous best games out at the time like Zelda, Zelda II, Metroid, Contra, Castlevania 1 & 2, Punch-Out, Ghosts'n Goblins, Ninja Gaiden & Dragon Warrior so it was perfect timing to get a great surprise game that I could fall in love with. I can still remember sitting in my room playing it thinking to myself how great of a game I thought it was and felt so satisfied once I finally beat it. I stayed up late too many times and was late for school a few times because of this game back then. Lol
That’s awesome! Reading your memories brings back so many of mine!
I'm so happy I got to grow up during that golden age of gaming.
Me too
I picked this game up at a local shop last year and play it on occasion on the AVS console. The graphics look even better in HD!
I remember the land of Faxanadu being mentioned in an episode of Captain N the Game Master.
That was a WEIRD show... lol Love your username by the way. Im a big starscream fan
I remember the dog & gameboy had to go there for some reason, and the dog bought a suit of armor.... wtf?!
Who sells dog-sized armor? More to the point, who would MAKE that?!!
I have always loved his game since I was a kid. I’m surprised they have not re-made this game on today’s consoles. I know I am probably by myself when I say that I would definitely play it if it was made for today’s consoles
There is a fan remake that looks great. I think it’s a free download. Search it up!
Bro please please please dont stop making videos again man ... the joy I got seeing you posted a video !!!!! And none of that morning mug stuff .. keep up the amazing work
Ya Morning Mug was fun because I got to hang out with my friends, but it’s really not my style
NESComplex dude you even brought back the Nintendo power episodes just noticed !!! So glad your back man
Awesome review and welcome back!!
Thank you and thank you for watching!
One of my favorite NES games and nice review of it! I loved the enemy placement in the game and thought it added a real fun challenge to the game. It made timing your jumps and hits like a mini game in itself. Oh and I always thought the shop keeper looked like Bill Murray! :P
I totally agree. It does look like Bill Murray. Hahaha
Another awesome video, my dude. I recently picked up Faxanadu, and I love it, I didn't think I would like it as much as I have.
Hey man! Thank you! I think a lot of people would be surprised by it.
My first RPG. I loved this game so much. I even had a paper with all of the codes on it.
Great to see you back
Thank you! Good to be back
Ha ha, that intro had me rolling, man! I'm ashamed to say this, but I've only played the beginning of Faxanadu. I own the game, and have tried it out several times, but I just could never get into it. But watching reviews like this always makes the game look great, so I definitely wanna play through it eventually. And dude, every time I watch one of your videos I think to myself, "I need to step up my game." Glad you're back, man!
Definitely give it a fair shot... break through the beginning and you might be surprised. And Wes... i feel the same way man! Your editing style inspires me. We should do a google hangout editing sesh
I'm down, brotha!
Can’t get enough of those Is It Fun series! Keep it up.
Thank you Martin! I’m glad you like them!!! More are coming for sure
im still rocking my Flea bass from like 5 years ago, thanks :)
Haha! Awesome!
Faxanadu, along with Crystalis and Guardian Legend, are among my top three underloved games for the NES.
I see you too are a person of culture!
I really like this videos, thanks for doing reviews from nes games!
Thank you! More NES reviews to come
this is literally my fav nes game and also one of the first video games i played in my life as a kid.
Wow! Awesome it’s number 1 for you? I’ve seen that a lot in the comments
I was so hooked up I played this non-stop as a kid when I bought it. Sadly it didn't last long, only took a few days to beat, but the feeling when playing it was unique. Only gripe being it's a bit too short and easy. Still fire up my old cart couple times a year. Cheers!
I'm so glad you're back, man!
Thank you! I’m happy to be back. I hope you’re enjoying the new videos
Man I’m so glad your back
Great video! Love the voice work
Thank you!
Welcome back brotha, keep the reviews coming😁🖒.
Thank you Dan! Im happy to be back! Thank you for watching!
I just bought a sealed graded copy of this game off eBay. This game has a lot of memories attached to it for me.
I'm so glad you are making videos again. Between you and Retroliberty disappearing I was uber sad. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Russ. Ya I miss their channel too. We are still friends and we still hang out and they will definitely be on my channel soon.
I loved this game as a kid and enjoyed it again a few years ago. Even back then I wanted something kinda dark besides Castlevania and Faxanadu hit the spot.
Right! The moodiness really fills a void on the NES. There were a few but Faxanadu has such a unique combination.
Another great video. Keep them coming please! I've been interested to try this one but haven't gotten around to it. Nothing wrong with having a game like this on the back burner though. Eventually I will get to it.
When you do, make sure to give it a good couple hours to get the rhythm
wow, not often RUclips recommends something new that i actually want to keep up with. i love the idea of boiling games down to whether or not they're actually fun as the highest value. and though this is first I've watched, awesome choice of games so far, definitely going to watch the rest! subscribed and looking forward to the rest of your stuff! God bless
Thank you so much Ricardo! I hope you enjoy the channel and God bless you too man!
I loved this game and still remember it.
It’s great! Glad you agree
Beautiful and enjoyable videos man!
Thank you so much Jay! I’m glad you liked it! I appreciate the kind words
I remember playing this game and I loved it as a kid growing up
What is pretty cool about the level design is that it is a big coherent world. It all takes place around and in a giant tree where you start at the roots and make your way up and inside it. In the game manual there is drawing of the tree with a broken branch where the meteorite fell through and you can even find that open spot in the branch levels. The mist levels are actually smoke from the fire from the meteorite crashing into the tree. I found the graphics to very moody and a bit scary as a kid. The fortresses and towers where quite dark and oppressive and the monsters looked alien. I miss games like this.
The blinking made me laugh so much
Awesome return to youtube. I will always pronounce the "X" in Faxanadu because thats what we said as kids. Can't change it now. Good game. Better than most people give it credit for.
Hey man! Thank you! Ya I can’t see myself saying it differently now. It’s locked in my automated speech centers. I agree too that it’s not on a lot of people’s radar but it’s very good!
diKIaGAAAA! hahaha. I loved this video. From your response to the strange bar maid selling you "FIRE" to the comment on "golds" your jokes made the journey to learn that Faxanadu was fun a joy in itself.
Thank you! Lol. I figured I’d actually chant the mantra
Also thank you for appreciating my humor. I’m a little odd
Spot on review! Great work
4:07 wow nice dodge... Don't tell me you were not surprised getting away unharmed there :D
I was totally surprised. I know exactly what you’re referring to. Lol. When you capture footage you’ve got to use every unique, cool moment
This is a game that has always sat in my collection but I've never actually played it but I will now! Great video Chris
Thanks man! Glad you liked it... get that game in the NES and give it a fair shot
The boss theme is repetitive but at the same time, it's masterfully done. The few notes and the 10-ish second loops have just the right notes to create a music track, that when it plays, you know you are in mortal peril and the enemy you are facing is lethal and CAN kill you very easily (which is true of most of the game's bosses, unless you know how to cheese them). Oh, and btw, you never tried using an hourglass against the dragon that has the dragonslayer sword? Try it sometime. I think you'll like what it does.
It does add to the tension. You have a good point there
Is this video good? YES ❤️🤘
Thanks! You rock!
It's funny how I gravitated towards games like Faxanadu, Legacy of the Wizard, Clash at Demonhead, Battle of Olympus and Zelda II - all percursors to what would ultimately become my favorite genre: The Metroidvania. A lot of these games were NOT popular at the time, but turned out to be way ahead of their time. Any of of them could be re-made with only minimal QoL improvements and they'd stand tall amongst the spate of indie MVs on the market today.
Wow, is it 2023 already? That flew by fast!
Great video. I replayed this game recently and it was as good as I remembered it from all those years ago.
I told you man... im really back... lol
Holy Moly where have you been? It's always a treat when you post a video.
I'm right here... I've posted 3 so far this month. So I'm really back. Thanks for sticking around during my hiatus! More to come. It's all in the works
Oh yeah i really enjoyed the Nintendo Power Time Machine video but i unfortunately decided to skip the A Link to the Past review because i still haven't beat the game. I've been dodging spoilers since 91. Well i can't wait to see what you have for us! Thank you broooo
For 27 years? Well beat it already... lol.
I know bro haha. About a year and a half ago i gave it a really good attempt and got maybe 80% through the game. I have serious issues when it comes to finishing games.
My all time favorite NES game. Hands down. I played it sooo much and even got a mantra that started you in the last level with everything in the game. Including hourglass, black orb (I think it was called that cant remember exactly) all spells and potions. All armour and inventory full of red potions. Took forever. Lol
+james murray spoken like a true Faxanadude! I mean fan
