    Great video. This was the game that made me go back to the SNES when I was a teenager. I REALLY wanted this to be good, but nope.

      That’s a good point. I actually owned an N64 before I later bought a used SNES as a kid. And it was a breath of fresh air to play so many good RPGs on the SNES, after being disappointed by this game, which had some things going for it (graphics, music, etc.), and yet turned out so joylessly mediocre.

"about the only issue Derek didn't mention probably because he felt bad for whoever designed it and didn't wanna call them out further" no bro this was just bad programming, the N64 at the time was well capable of handling what they had in mind for this game its just the devs failed to deliver, the game was a complete clusterfuck.

      This guy defended Hydlide. HYDLIDE.
      But yes, Quest, one of the ONLY RPGs for the N64 (meaning the designers had nothing to go off of and were basically throwing stuff at the wall to see what stuck), is totally a plague that must be avoided and isn't worth being defended or looked at objectively.
      Yknow unlike Hydlide. which "wasnt that bad"

  • @captawesome42

    You described it perfectly when you said it was a little bit of water in a desert devoid of RPGs at the time. I really liked this game when I was younger pretty much only for that reason. I acknowledge it's very bad objectively but I can't help having a certain fondness and nostalgia for it.

  • @HiddenAdept
    @HiddenAdept 7 лет назад +2

    Aidyn Chronicles, a turn based RPG for the N64 actually has a pretty similar combat system, in terms of movement anyway. While having a better story. Though it's also pretty uneven in terms of quality. I found it fun cause it's crazy how much you can customize your party in it.

  • @StoneMonkWisdom
    @StoneMonkWisdom 8 лет назад +11

    I played this game in my youth, I enjoyed it even though I recognized some flaws the game had. I didn't have too much else to play.. I liked the earth element so I powered that up mostly until a bit later in the game when I found out that Water gives a very useful and important healing spell. Would I play this game again? I don't think I want to relive any nostalgia as the time investment would be too big for a seemingly mediocre experience with it's merits and flaws. The one thing that bothered me the most was not having a second or even third party member, just yourself against hoards of enemies almost always being outnumbered.

    Hey, not a bad review. When I used to rent this game as a kid, I swore it off as the worst game I had ever played (even worse than Superman 64), but I gave it a chance a few years ago. Honestly, I think what magic you choose makes a big difference. I noticed you stuck with the ol' tried and true Earth/Water route, which is obviously a pretty good method. When I played it a few years ago, I maxed out Wind and Fire and had a much better time. A ton of enemies are weak to wind, which makes the game a lot different than having to use avalanche over and over. Fire gets the vampiric touch, which makes melee worth using too. Just a consideration!

    The elusive RPG on the N64!!!! This title has always tickled my curious bone. Hey man, great effort in the intro getting the game into the system :P It's like you don't like the game? oh this should be goooooood.
    High encounter rate? Bland story? Long fights? So what's the point! Nintendo really screwed up not pushing RPGs on their system. Playstation was killing it and there were some of the best RPGS ever coming out during this time. Imagine all the great games we should have had if nintendo hadn't let the genre fall apart. And this game is what we got? Obviously this team wasn't equipped to put out a quality title, but I wonder if the hardware itself prevented more teams from trying to program RPGs. Even Earthbound failed to launch.
    Derek, another excellent video. I noticed you keep your camera focus off of you. Is this intentional to showcase your collection behind you? I think I noticed this in another video... Anyway, the game sucks, but you rock! Very sad ending to your video :(

    I played in the 90s and I like it, but mostly because for a time it was the only RPG on the Nintendo 64 and also in that time it was very rare to see an RPG with 3D environments (the RPG of the PS1 used to be like the SNES ones(like Wild Arms) or like FFVII where it's a 2D background with 3D characters drawn at front), I don't know if this was the first RPG with 3D environments but if not at least it was rare.
    Right now with a lot of more options to play it's not worth the time.

    I had this game on my N64 and would always go back to it, just to say I beat it. I was a completionist when I was younger so, while the game was pretty lackluster, I did have some minor enjoyment, experimenting with the different elements and learning new skills. Took forever to level up and by the end of the game, most enemies were quick to kill with the right spell (Avalanche trivializing the final boss was a bit disappointing but that's kind of par for the course with this game).
    It wasn't the worst game I ever played, it just needed more direction in it's story telling and a better combat system that actually encouraged diversifying your spell usage, instead of just powering 1-2 Element trees (Earth and Water completely outclassed Fire and Air).

    I enjoyed this game as a kid, and some parts of it do tickle that nostalgia feeling, mainly the Isle of Skye and its theme. Quest 64 could've been so much more than it was. I did finish the game, but it was a game made for a different time and I wouldn't recommend anyone go out of their way to play it. I enjoyed the combat system sometimes, but it did get extremely repetitive and encounter rates were out of control.

    I've always thought Quest 64 gets an even worse reputation, simply because of the lack of RPGS on the N64. If it had been on the playstation it might be considered, bad or even mediocre but not awful.

  • @Slatch36
    @Slatch36 5 лет назад +1

    Dummies. A Dragon Warrior game on the N64 would've made a killing.

    Back in the day I loved Quest 64, back when I first got into NSYNC! I played the game listening to my favorite boy band! That was my nostalgic memories! That and I used a game shark to beat the game! Dear god the ending sucked, but it was a fun RPG!

    I remember renting and playing about a half hour and then quitting it for good. Anyone who had been playing the great psx rpg's couldn't play that garbage.

  • @toolman4745

    Never played this game, I knew it existed, but didn't appeal to me. There weren't many N64 RPGs either so I figure I would've grabbed every one there was. Although I did have a PSX so I had all the RPGs I needed over there.

    I think I'm in the minority by saying that I actually really enjoyed this game! Sure it's mediocre, but I found the battle system intuitive and I enjoyed a lot of the soundtrack! I also have a lot of nostalgia for it too though.

    The sad thing is, with a bit more work and effort put into it...it could have been a great entry game for people who want to get into RPGs, but felt intimidated by stuff like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest. A simple RPG with simplified mechanics to help ease people into embracing the genre. A shame, really.

    So much more to this game than you noticed. I’m reminded of old-school MMO‘s like EverQuest where you’re not given the story on a silver platter and you have to actually talk to the NPC‘s in order to piece things together. That makes the world more of a real living, breathing experience But most of that depends on the efforts and observations of the player. For a generation who is railroaded and spoon-fed through a gaming experience I can understand where you’re coming from.

    Did you capture this footage on an emulator or the actual N64, because it has a fake CRT overlay look to it. It looks like the scanlines are uneven which happens when the game is played at a resolution that's not a multiple of the game's native resolution. Anyway, it's up to you how you want to capture your footage, but that filter you used doesn't look that great IMO.

      +MrDrinkingLysol He might also be using an upscaler like an XRGB or something that has the option to add scanlines.

    Haha I enjoyed the video.
    I remember playing this as a wee lad and enjoying it, rose tinted goggles though, cause the game is truly awful.
    One nitpick, was it just me, or was the focus on the shelves behind you when you were talking on camera? You seemed blurry, and everything behind you seemed crisper. Am I crazy?

    • @SuperDerek
      @SuperDerek  8 лет назад

      Nope, you're not crazy. It's unfortunately something that I didn't notice until I was done rendering, and had no time left to re-shoot the video. I'll get it next time though! :)

  • @SirenoftheVoid

    Yep, i beat this game too. Some of the music is good, but it was never memorable to me. Watching this review reminds me of how tedious battles were, as even escaping took forever.

    I remember renting this at Blockbuster back in the 90's. I found it boring. I tried it again as a adult and I still couldn't get into it.
