iOS 18 Video Playback Issues with Photos App

- I was excited to install the new iOS 18 update for my Apple iPhone and now wish I wouldn’t have 🤯 In this video I walk you through all the issues with video playback within the Apple Photos app. I believe this all began a few updates ago with image editing in Photos as I discuss in the video and now with the recent update they brought this wrath down upon us with videos too! Note - it is NOT fixed on 18.1 either!
What’s the issue? When you open up a video from the gallery it displays in about 3/5 of the size of the device’s screen. The native playback controls or “scrubber” as some call it are now overlayed atop the video. It’s difficult to get the finger to scroll over this scrubber.
If you want to view the video in full screen on your device you are no longer able to see any slider bar to view the video frame by frame and jump to sections. It vanishes. The video should natively play at full screen. This is absolutely ridiculous. Even worse, for coaches or anyone that needs to zoom in to see a small area in the video the scrubber has a bug and only shows about 1 second of the total video no matter the duration of the video you just zoomed into.
Also having tbe metadata (location / day) display above the video is stupid. There appears to be no way to hide this.
The whole iOS update is a mess as they thined Apple Photos and between editing screenshots in a tiny window and now video being unusable I’m fed up with how Apple no longer things about form or function. In reality it appears they didn’t even think about design on this one as it’s simply awful on all levels.
If you too are having issues scrubbing videos on iOS 18 please chime in and comment and also be sure to create a support ticket for both “bug report” and also “feature request” (which ironically is a reverse feature request).
Thanks for watching my amateur tutorial video on how the new video playback works on iOS 18 and why it’s such a problem. My suggestion is they show the video and image full screen by default and you simply touch the screen to display any controls or scrubber and then touch it again (away from any controls) to hide the controls and have a clean full screen viewing experience.

Yes! The new Apple Photos is a mess. iOS 18 needs to be patched for this very obvious bug and usability flaw.
The Photo app sucks now, There was no need to change it. Apple just did it because they had absolutely no idea what too add for iOS 18. This company is becoming a gimmick now. The AI feature is already on every Android. "Yesterday's technology for tomorrow's prices"

Got my point exactly.. I don't even wanna watch and analyse my videos on my phone, I better send it to my girlfriends iPhone 12 with old IOS and it is 100 times better.. This was literally the best single thing I loved and was using iPhone for ://

I’m glad someone has mentioned this, cause I was going crazy over this update! I primarily use 100% screenshots of my videos for photos, and this completely screwed up my process. I own both the 14 and 16 pro maxes … I’m so irritated by the unfinished releases of hardware and software 😠

I agree. The iOS 18 photo app is a mess and I initially thought the video scrubber issue was a bug. Apple needs to fix this and fast!

Same problem! 🤯 I’m a filmmaker and I’m using my iphone 15PM to make camera tests and this update completely destroyed the playback experience to the point I’m really considering of selling my 15 PM and buying a Pixel.
Thank you so much for making this video! Added a reply to your community post. Please be sure to update us all if they get back to you or if you come across a workaround! I've even tried other local video players in the app store (VLC and Infuse). Neither of them support both zooming freely into a video while also being able to scrub frame by frame. Insane!
@@lthemanl thanks for the reply. Yea this is truly absurd. I’m happy to know it’s not just my phone but disgusted to know incompetent developers and QA teams would roll out such a terrible “update”. Embarrassing really. Will be sure to post an update here if the app is patched or if I uncover any solution.
Same issue. It was fine with the scrubber thing before the update. Hope apple can fix this 😢

College track coach here - 100% agree. This is garbage! I pray for a fix to this or I'll have to look at other options - which is ridiculous.
@@hurdles52 💯 who in their right mind could think this is a feature upgrade? I was on the phone for 2 hours with Apple support getting the runaround with their highest level of support trying to tell me with a straight face this is intended functionality 😆 I emailed them links to a ton of Twitter posts and various RUclips videos and my Apple forum post here and they still didn’t get it. Praying this is resolved within a few days. Otherwise I cannot properly do what I need to do for my profession and will need to get a different type of phone. @@janbos9815 amen! How anyone in their right mind with even the slightest bit of common sense and intelligence could think they made an upgrade is baffling. It’s seriously one of the biggest failed “feature” changes in the history of technology!
PLEASE chime in on the Apple Support post I made here and in to Apple explaining the issue. I wasted 2 hours on the phone with them and they basically told me no one else has reported it so they don’t see any need to jump to make any changes at this time!!!

A temporary workaround is you zoom into the video and zoom out a little (pinch to zoom) then if you tap the screen you’ll see the scrubber full screen. Btw you can scrub anywhere on the bar you don’t have to touch exactly where it’s playing. It’s not a perfect solution but a little more manageable.
They don't respect users feedback any more.
My advice for you is to downgrade ur iphone to ios 17.7 by itunes as soon as possible before they close the door to do so.
@@Mohamedahmed-jz7xd it’s a real shame. What’s laughable is that the people who probably approved / came up with this “feature add” make over a couple hundred thousand a year. Meanwhile any child could’ve done a better job not messing it up.
Why don’t you become a iOS developer then and fix it the second one person says about it? For all you know, they could’ve been working on this for the past 3 weeks and just been unable to sort it
YES!! I am just about to lose my shit! Whoever came out with making video playback look like IG reel seriously needs to be fired!! And Apple needs to stay genuine and stop trying to steal ideas and screwing shit up for no reason. Freaking ridiculous!! Looking at their progress in recent years Tim Cook really needs to step down and someone else needs to lead Apple at this point. Enough of the fake marketing BS!

Pleased to say that this bug with the scrolling of the video when zoomed is fixed in 18.1, but the timeline scrubbing with thumbnails is only available when using the "edit" feature.
Absolutely horrible news. We need the timeline scrubbing with thumbnails without having to go into edit, ugh!!!! It’s embarrassing that Apple fouled this up so bad. The most irritating thing for me is not being able to scroll frame by frame in a native full screen view! We shouldn’t have to accept workarounds for the richest US company in history.

@@brentgrab Hmm I forgot to mention (because it felt kind of instinctive) that when you scrub, the FULL video scrubs too.. I honestly think it's fine. However, I can understand that if it's a long video, then it would be nice to know where in the video you're trying to scrub to in advance.

my new 16 pro is not recording audio in any videos. trust me its the recording, old videos in Photos play with audio, and the new videos don't play audio on other phones either.

idk what they were cooking but the photos app burnt :/
edit: the scrubber also bugs out with videos over 30 seconds, and beyond that it just gets worse (around 40-55 seconds is where i found the most buggy looking stuff)
anything that is 1min20 or looks the same, longest video ive tested is 2min43
and if you go from one video to the next the scrubbing works fine... until you play the video and try scrubbing again
@@stopplecone the whole thing is a joke. To have the scrubber over the video instead of below is idiotic. And having the video shrink in size on the screen is the stupidest thing ever thought of. Whoever rolled this out and approved it should be immediately fired. Apple and their employees need more accountability to prevent stupid incidents like this.

No one has even mentioned how you can barely tell what part of the video you are on via the scrubber because you are looking at a white bar against a slightly off white bar to tell what part has past vs upcoming. Whoever thought this up should be fired. But then again, the entire board approved it, sooo… Clean house?

It’s terrible. I missed a whole quarter of my son’s football game due to the camera bugs. Stops recording at 19 minutes every time.

None of this things are happening to me. None. If you want to make it full screen tap the video once. The progress bar works perfect and actually it’s better than it was, I always had problem with it and I was changing to other videos.
@@AdamKowalski-hb2db having to have to tap the video each time to get full screen is asinine and a decline in usability and practicality. Also when clicking to watch it full screen you CANNOT view it frame by frame. The second you want to pause the video or want it frame by frame (scrolling with the scrubber) it reverts to the tiny size. Whatever team designed and rolled this out should be fired.
@@brentgrab I can watch it frame by frame no problem on my site. And having problem with taping to full screen is funny it’s such a nuance 😅 I’m on public iOS 18 iPhone 12 mini. Maybe you’re on beta or something? Or you’ve got not the same version as me I’m from Europe maybe that’s the case? I dunno 🤷 it looks like we have two different iOS 18’s 😂
