After spending some time catching up with engineers here is my top 10 list of activities for farming materials required for engineering upgrades.

For raw materials find a planet with thargoid mining barnacles that have the raw materials you want. then just farm the barnacles. Much faster than roaming around a planet.
same deal as anaconda? log out/in?
Kornelius Briedis yes but you have to switch from solo to open. If you are in open and log off and back on they will still be destroyed. You must log back and forth through open and closed. it is especially helpful for grade 5 raw materials, you'll find one or two (which when collected yields 3) every other search. Don't forget to bring a detailed surface scanner as well.
i think i wanted to go there but there was crashed anaconda before, any particular barnacle you can suggest that is good enough and not far away from bubble?
that is the one drawback, the distance. it about 450-500 light-years from the bubble. i have an engineered DBX that has 50ly range so i get there in about 11-13 jumps. the ones I've found that are good are in the Pleiades Sector PI-T c3-9 planets A2 and B1 (has technetium, vanadium, geranium, tungsten, tin and chromium) and Pleiades Sector LN-S B4-3 planets B3, B4, C2, and C3. all four planets are 23,000ls away. (has tellurium, yttrium, cadmium, niobium, mercury, arsenic, zinc, and zirconium)

well, 500 LY is nothing, 15 minutes at most, less time hyper jumping than searching for location on planets surface.
how do you locate barnacles on surface? by latitude and longitude?
There's also the Jameson Cobra.
4 Data Cores with a high drop rate of Adaptive Encryptors which I believe are grade 5.
You can sit in the middle of all four with your SRV, scan them in turn with the turret, switch modes and do it again. I went from 0 to 100 in about ten minutes.
....could you please be more specific? Do I just look for "Jameson Cobra?"

Another vote for the Jameson Crash Site. You can very quickly farm up high grade data there. Log out/log in until you're full up on at least one of the data types, and then trade for what you need. Revisit again and trade if you want to balance your data materials as much as possible.
nice to see you back :) for raw mats, when you approach a planet check for the areas that seem oxidized. in metal planets is a bit more reddish. the spawn of metallic objects is crazy. batches of three rocks all containing 3 chunks of ytrium for example. combine this with a skimmer mission and can be even more profitable in mats :)
hmm, so there are better and worse places on same planet to find mats? reddish, will have to test it someday ;)

There is another way to get some data, there's many different types of settlements on planet surfaces that you can scan without the need to engage in combat. This is nowhere near as effective as the megaship hacks, but if you like driving with SRV, you can do this to mix things up a bit if you get bored. Some of the settlements allow you to be... "creative" with your driving and can be fun to pull off shenanigans while you're racing against the clock.
extremely helpful tips. was dreading the thought of surface prospecting and instance hopping at dav's. never thought to go to unauthorized installations with limpets.

well, you can take my shredders and just annihilate condas, clippers etc. a haz res sites, you get some stuff there too
The crashed conda called the "Bug killer" has flat open terrain and is very easy to farm. It also has 3 data terminals that are equivalent to Jameson's crash site.
I dont know of its better or worse, but if you go to an M3M surfice instalation you can do the 4 beacons in under a minute, log out and do it again in reverse. This works at any place but m3m is the easiest as there is no trsspass and only 4 beacons that are quick and easy to reach.
1:01 Like it or not, a lot of manufactured materials can only be found in "High Grade Emission" Signal Source, such as:
1. Pharmaceutical Isolators: for Thruster Dirty Drive, can only found only in "Outbreak" state systems
2. Military Grade Alloys: for Lightweight Armor, can only found only in "War/Civil War" state systems
3. Proto Heat Radiators: for Efficient Laser, can only be found in "Boom" state systems
4. Improvised Components: for Reinforced Shield, can only be found in "Civil Unrest" state systems
5. Military Supercapacitors: for High capacity mod, can only be found in "War/Civil War" state systems
6. Imperial Shielding: for Resistant Augmented Shield Booster, can only be found in Empire controlled systems
7. Core Dynamics Composites, for Long Range Scanner and Heavy Duty Armor, can only be found in Federation controlled systems
8. Proto Radiolic Alloys: for Lightweight modes, can only be found in "Boom" state systems
Some in the list are crucial for serious engineering and some are very important source for lower level mats in the same family. It takes even more time if you go for other approaches, such as mission board-flipping (never seen any myself) or Material Trader (one Signal Source can provides you up to 15* G5 mats, equivalent to 90* G4 trading mats). I'm surprised that you just failed to mention them.
And I'm also surprised that you missed the "Convey Beacon" signal sources in Outbreak/Famine systems; these are fixed position signal source like Nav Beacon, and you can find them near inhabited station/planets. Once in there, a lot of minor transporter ships will keep popping in and out, and you can scan ships and FSD wakes indefinitely without save/relogin. It's the fasted way to get Datamined Wake Exceptions (for Long Range FSD), about 5 to 10 drops (15 to 30 pieces) per hour. That Isinor beacon is only good for Abnormal Compact Emissions Data and Aberrant Shield Pattern Analysis.
you forget about mission rewards and ability to trade materials, you can get it all without visiting single signal source.
As I said, flying aimlessly in Deep Space and wait for HGE USS is, unfortunately, much more efficient then mission board-flipping.
Generally it takes you roughly 20 minutes board-flipping and extra 20 minutes more to do the mission, and 10 minutes to fly back and report mission, and you get only up to 5 mats. For the same amount of time you can have about 2 to 3 HGE spawn and each will grant you 3 to 5 drops, which means that you only need to hit only one single HGE to get all the G5 mats you need for a single categories.
For example, you will need at least 7 to 9 Pharmaceutical Isolators to get your G5 Dirty Drive fully upgrades, and it takes you only HGE in Outbreak systems to fulfill all your needs (5 drops each), while you may need to do 3 missions for the same amount of rewards, if you can find any.
Besides, you need to go to the system will exact states mentions above to find proper mission reward anyway - you won’t get Pharmaceutical Isolator anywhere outside of Outbreak systems.
Needless to say, trading for G5 mats you need is plain time wasting. You need to fly about 10 to 12 missions to get enough Exotic Crystal or Biotech Conductors to trade a single category of G5 mats, and don’t forget you can’t trade manufactured with Modified Embedded Firmware.

best way i farm data is to find a certain type of planetary site, has 3 data points, no defenses and you stay outside the restricted area, gives up to 5 types, including mod embed firmware, relog and repeat. its a s2m site, my fav is in chuelchs nordskoid lab planet b6, gives these types SLF UEF TEC CIF CSD OSK DSD SFP CSF MEF
or a s1l which gives the missing one MCF
I am always running out of raw materials, so going to have to check out that crashed anaconda... never have any problems with data or manufactured as built up so much early in the game. Thanks!
after that crashed conda i used eddb.io/body and searched for what i need and i found some, it will take 1-2 days driving around but you can actually find crap on planets, it's just a lot of tedious driving ;/
Kornelius Briedis yeah done a fair bit of that, gets tired fast. I visited the Conda and spent a couple of hours there, then went to a material trader and finished my power plant upgrades, so that's everything done now until I finish unlocking pailin, just got to gather the thargoid shit for him now. The end of the engineer grind is in sight!

Geological Sites provide a centralized mining node on a planet, look for ones with 10%+ grade 4-5 resources, there are alot of them in the pleiades

you can get tons of gr 3 4 and 5 in jameson's crash and same + gr 4 and 5 raw in the bug killer. Both same method as crashed anaconda

HIP 16613 - Planet 1A - Map Planet - Front & Back - Head for THE BUG KILLER. It's a downed Anaconda which has 3 data log points and 3 cargo racks to. Terrain is good to move about in. It's a low gravity planet so if you get stuck on an object just use the boost/jump to get off objects. Oh and don't worry about the Thargoid Interceptor, he won't harm you when he scans the downed conda, makes hell of a noise though lol.

For surface prospecting I go to volcanism tourist beacons. They have a lot of rocks in a small area, so you don't need to spend hours looking. They usually also have several top grade drops. And best of all, they show up in your nav panel from 1k ls away.
Do the medium security surface base runs for CIF/MEF still work?
Replying to myself: I decided to go to Ejeta Relay in Delta Pavonis to test, and not only do the runs still work, they have actually been buffed. There's no longer a 2 week cooldown, you can just relog and do it again straight away.

Julio Montega There's another crashed Conda on a different planet that I think has the same mats as the one in Orrere, the big plus is that the terrain is a lot smoother so there's probably no need to go to Orrere ever again.

Really liked this video, very helpful! Not sure what I was doing wrong at the megaship but I got wanted status three times over perhaps 15 scans. I was going silent running before using the limpet until the hack was complete. Any ideas?
i was filming this in anarchy system so silent run was not needed at all, if you are in lawful space you will be wanted and under attack even if you are silent running all the time, same time with silent run you can do like 80+ scans easily if you are quick enough to log out. so just find megaship in anarchy system or be quick.

Appears to be, at least at Isinor...Hostile ship spawn rates and rank are down, along with the scans and mats they drop.
megaship doesnt need you to log, you can just jump out and drop back in
yeah, but by logging out and back in you can scan at least 3x more as you will be in the right spot.

no, i park 220m from hackable dish and start scanning the second i'm back into the game, it takes like 40-50 seconds for complete circle of 1 hack ;)
What happens if you don't silent run in a regular gov. system ?

Ok I found a prison ship in (hip 17692, the Alcatraz class prison ship JJF-048) for some reason I can scan that, maybe you can only scan ships that you cant land on?

ye man lol i have a totally silent diamond back with like 2 makes it alot faster
haha, funny. well, the only issue then is that you run out of limpets 2x faster and i usually like to have 50-70 hacks before i elave megaship...
I don't think silent running is necessary for hacking the ship, I've never had an npc agro me and its usually in a zero security system.
maybe, but i've seen a video where guy was hacking without silent run and he got fined.. then he did all future hacks with silent running the whole time which requires heat sinks for most ships. i never tried without silent run though, so maybe it's not needed at all, but that fine he got was real ;)
Kornelius Briedis yea idk why that happened, it could depend on the system it’s in at the time. Better safe than sorry I guess. Either way you do it, it’s extremely quick to fill up your data for lots of engineering:)

B1, but it's not anarchy system so silent running ALL the time and even while you are "invisible" you get bounties issued and npc will attack you.

i have an asp for silent run, i can be SR for 3 minutes without overheating and without any HS, but i managed to scan maybe 20 times before my hull was below 20% and i had to bail, so be very careful ;)

I tried your TOP 1 at 2 different locations. Attacked by Federal Security ships each time I hacked the data transmitter. What's wrong ? :/
only in anarchy systems is safe, all other places you need silent run and be quick and still you will become wanted, get bounties and be under attack

I have now done 10+ megaship hacks. A very nice place, thanks about this one. I do get bounty each time it seems (first time I did it silent running, but they still caught me, so I have not bothered with that anymore as I am wanted no matter what). I rather keep the shields up and take that 1k or so bounty from the hack and get out and back in.

Kornelius - Yep, found it GD 175 now, way out there. Thought I was doing something wrong, because I was constantly collecting bounties and the authority ships seem to be aggressively scanning everything.

nah, sorry, i didn't pay attention that LP 634-1 was a lawless system, so you can scan without silent running at all, but if there is law then....i was silent running the whole time and still got bounties and escaped with 15% hull, so it can be done there but you will be wanted and attacked ;/

At Jul-2019 top activities mentioned here are expired. They closed most of effective tricks in space. Planetary ones are still ok.

I think they nerfed Isinor. NPCs doesnt seem to respawn.

Well, I just found shooting stuff much more interesting than looking for high grade emissions. Damn, FD at its finest.
Don't blame you for it, but way too much talk about having to use third party tools and exploits. What a shame that ED makes us to do this, due to the shallowness/lack of commitment to this game. So much potential.
