Gotta do the original No Leaf Clover off the the first S&M... this is an excellent version but there are elements of the first that are missing... especially the reaction from the crowd hearing this song performed for the very first time EVER!
This song was created with the San Francisco Symphony in 99 the first time they did this. They just recently started playing it live recently to get ready for last year’s S&M (this one)
You should also check out ALL WITHIN MY HANDS, from this show!!! It's amazing, too, and I personally like this version better than the original track from ST. ANGER (2003)!!! Btw.: This song ("No Leaf Clover") has the premiere on the first S&M album (1999), when Jason Newsted was yet them bassist!! Nowadays, Robert Trujillo is them bass player since (like) 2003/2004, and Jason Newsted was them bassist from 1986 (he replaced Cliff Burton, who died at the bus accident in September 1986) to 2000/2001!!
S&M is a concept album by Metallica and San Francisco Symphony Orchestra. Metallica and San Fran Symphony Orchestra recently put out a second S&M album with newly written and newly adapted songs.
This is great, but the original from S&M is a little more "uneasy" sounding, which makes it even better. When he says the "soothing light" bit, he goes a lot higher.
"Then it comes to be that soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just my fantasy team coming your waaaaaaaay"- Me to you Dave! You're going down this year and losing our bet!
Watch the Cliff Burton Anesthesia live in Chicago 1983. Then watch the tribute from this show. It was my favorite moment from the S&M show. Gave me chills. Talk about rumbling bass.
If you thought Rock bands don't use quantization these days, sorry to burst your bubble. Especially in modern Metal. Almost unavoidable with rising levels of technicality. (This performace is pretty raw tho) xD Also this song was specifically written for their first S&M live album in 1999. The rest is just orchestrated Metallica tracks.
S&M by Metallica is basically, the band joins the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and does their tunes to a backing orchestra. Basically they have worked with the orchestra coming up with the symphonic arrangements for their songs. On the new one though, they actually worked with the orchestra on a orchestra based song instead of one of out Metallica's catalog.
To clarify, it's one song, not the entire concert/album for the orchestra based song on S&M2. Then I believe there is one orchestra only song, then the rest is Metallica catalog. S&M 1 was Metallica only catalog.
@@purplebeard1526 Two songs, No Leaf Clover and '-human' were produced specifically for S&M, and the rest were adaptations. They (SFSO) performed Ecstasy Of Gold by themselves because it's an Enrico Morricone song for traditional instruments.
The ONLY thing I hated that was a missed opportunity was they did NOT play FIXXXER, one of the few songs Metallica has NEVER played live in full, ever! I realise that FIXXXER is a difficult song for James to play live due to the lyrical content, but S&M2 seemed like the *perfect* time and place to play it live - vs just playing 75% of the same shit from S&M1 for "nostalgia-sakes"... I did go and see S&M2 live at the cinema just before covid hit with a special message from the band for us early viewers of S&M2 (I prefer the cinema cut of the concert vs the final release.) No square ZOOM style blocks all over the video on the original S&M2...
Great video brother. 20 years ago Metallica did a collaboration with the San Francisco Symphony orchestra. (San Fran is basically Metallica’s base of operations) on the S&M1 album, I think all of the songs were songs that were previously released on their albums with the exception of no leaf clover which was a new track. Then just this year Metallica released an S&Mtwo album which is what this video is from. S&M of course does not stand for sadomasochism but for symphony and metallica. I totally agree with what you’re saying about quantization. For lack of a better comparison, quantization is to the instrumental what auto tune is to the voice. It makes a very distinct sound that is makes it clear to notice when it is being used. There are many bands out there that use quantization that have fantastic recordings but basically sound like shit live because autotune quantization make them seem more talented than they actually are. Metallica is fantastic live and always has been. When the original S&M album came out I was not allowed to listen to Metallica coming from a conservative Christian home because my parents assume that heavy metal music was just noise. When I was able to show my parents that a band like Metallica could play in beautiful harmony with a symphony orchestra they were floored.
Hehehe... going into the original show everyone was nervous as all get out. Metallica was "Oh my god, these are professionals, how will we measure up" and the orchestra players were "Oh my god, this is Metallica, how can we keep up!" After the first practice it was all good though.
S&M is a live album that Metallica released with the San Francisco Symphony. It is such a good album. All the songs on the album are previously released songs from Metallica. The music was arranged to have the Symphony play with them for this album. It is personally my favorite album because I was playing violin when this was released and always wanted to learn to play theses songs.
They caught a lot of shit from metal heads for doing this album but I think it was an awesome concept. There’s just something special about hearing violins and other symphonic instruments with metal. Great reaction as always, stay safe my dude!!
I always thought the whole ..And Justice for All album would translate well into a full orchestral version. Lots of epic riffs that remind me of classical string music.
Dave; You should react to the whole S&M2-album......I guarantee you one thing; you will be sitting in awe how beautiful and powerful the whole gig is 🔥🔥🔥....the gig contains mostly Metallica-songs except two songs......
Says it feels right this time, Turned around and found the right line Was just the freight train coming your way Just when all seems fine And I'm pain free, You jab another pin Jab another pin in me Very depressing ...........
S&M 1 is by far the better sounding performance with Metallica. The symphony really accompanies and amplifies Metallica’s music. Dave your reactions are amazing, you most definitely should check out S&M 1 🤘🏻
No Leaf Clover first premiered in S&M (the first one with San Fransisco Symphony).... It was heard for the first time with a symphony, and should only be played with a symphony, imo LMAO... Let's not lie - people trashed this song when it first hit, but it's a fucking AMAZING song.
Back when I was little this qas one of those songs that you hear but don't know the name or artist and you search years to find out, before internet convenience.
Oh modern metal/rock bands snap to the grid all the time. It's why most of it sounds the same, it's too perfect. That and they use the same amp plugins etc. and the guitar tones are the same. Old school 'quantization' was recording 500 takes if that's what it took to get it right. They had an absurd number or recorded tape layers for And Justice For All.
James voice ..... Oh my God

This one is way better editted ..hands down
This is my favorite Metallica song...I saw it on S&M 1 and absolutely fell in love.
Mate I just think Metallica do everything perfect, every part of their songs are crafted so geniusly
Should check out some of the original S&M see what they where like in 99
This song was created with the San Francisco Symphony in 99 the first time they did this. They just recently started playing it live recently to get ready for last year’s S&M (this one)
I remember the first time I heard this, I was absolutely mind blown.

Great reaction 💖 You should even react to Metallicas S&M 2 Nothing else Matters 🥰
This is great, but the original from S&M is a little more "uneasy" sounding, which makes it even better. When he says the "soothing light" bit, he goes a lot higher.
One of the few times that Kirk plays his 3mil$ guitar live. I have only else seen it on Fade to Black, and Lockdown Blackened
300k approx actually. ( true and now easy to find the true fact )
It was a full orchestra, strings, horns, the whole shebang!
9:23 Thats Kirk's guitar not violins or cello. I know u were trying the understand what it is :)
"Then it comes to be that soothing light at the end of your tunnel, was just my fantasy team coming your waaaaaaaay"- Me to you Dave! You're going down this year and losing our bet!
I love how your bottom lip curls up if you hear something nasty XD 🤣🤣
these two types of music fits quite well together symphony orchestra and metallica
I'm so glad to see you do this review. This has been one of my favorites for years! Glad you enjoyed it
Watch the Cliff Burton Anesthesia live in Chicago 1983. Then watch the tribute from this show. It was my favorite moment from the S&M show. Gave me chills. Talk about rumbling bass.
You really should check out more of their live performances.
Another one of my all-time metallica faves! Awesome reaction video Dave!
check out the original S&M personally its one of fave live albums and fave metallica albums

It's more like the SFSO backs up Metallica
Personally, I prefer the original S & M. To me, the original S & M was a performance whereas S & M II was just a concert with an orchestra.

never heard anyone talking bad about this album
Metal heads are stupid crying idiots... since 70's many rock/metal bands had been experimenting with orchestras
I always thought the whole ..And Justice for All album would translate well into a full orchestral version. Lots of epic riffs that remind me of classical string music.
@@ben1ben There was a lot of "sell out" comments when I was at school when it came out, but I loved it then and I love it now.
If I had to choose a song to play when I'm approaching anyone this is my pick

This is still my favorite song from S & M... though I still prefer the original performance the first time 😎

More s&m 2 plz!!!!!
YOU HAVE TO WATCH THE 1999 S&M VERSION. IT'S MUCH BETTER, VOCALY AND MUSICALLY 🤘🏼🎶
This song doesn’t get enough credit!
You should really do Halo on Fire from this same concert...It's definitely the best song done with symphony
No Leaf Clover debuted on S&M one back in 1998 or 1999 I think it was 99.
Check out UNFORGIVEN 3 from S&M2! It’s totally different! Very risky on James’ part and chilling
More S&M2 reactions required :-)
The call of kthulu from this album
They performed this song at Woodstock 99 and didn't have quantization , lol. Just drums, guitars and vocals. Not sure if this was specific to S&M
Kirk never ever ever even looks like he's trying that hard... Unbelievable.
S&M 1 is by far the better sounding performance with Metallica. The symphony really accompanies and amplifies Metallica’s music. Dave your reactions are amazing, you most definitely should check out S&M 1 🤘🏻
Especially hearing outlaw torn, Metallica and the symphony really take you for a ride on that one

Amazing!! Does anyone know what the orchestra thought
Hey Dave. Try Dream Theater "The Count of Tuscany". You'll be in ectasy..
Back when I was little this qas one of those songs that you hear but don't know the name or artist and you search years to find out, before internet convenience.
It has to do hard for James to sing these autobiographical songs. It's hard for me to just listen these days based on my own mistakes
So* not do
Dave react to no leaf clover off the 1st s+m
S & M = S -San Francisco Philharmonic Orchestra and M- Metellica
react to the kidnap the sandy claws by voiceplay
Dropping tomorrow.

Wow Kirk butchered that solo. The solo he played in the original S&M is one of my favourite Metallica solos ever, but this one was terrible.
