Yes Jason got the writing credit for this ,he wrote the bass line and he said originally this was supposed to be an instrumental on the black album to follow suit with the other albums having instrumentals
Love how James can write these awesome lyrics, & their performances are sooo tight & insync, They definitely rule in multi tasking & their diversity of each hit they created, This is why they're Thrash Metal God's!!!
This song belongs to their famous BLACK ALBUM (1991). I was one of the firsts who purchased this album in Greece. In this album, they introduced very interesting new sounds that surprised their fans (and me too). Also, there's their first album that they included some other instruments like violins (Nothing Else Matters if I remember well).
Little facts: It was meant to be as an "instrumental" track of The Black Album, but Bob Rock (them producer at the time) suggested to add the lyrics and some other musical elements. The interlude is a harmonizing guitar solo, done by both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett, before the main solo kicks in (Before the harmony happened, James Hetfield did a little solo beginning with the volume swelling at his guitar). Well, obviously I like it so far, but I'm interested in what it would sound like it was an actual instrumental (just like Jason Newsted wanted it to be; he would get here even more "credit" for his music, I believe, and even his bass riff was much longer and a little bit more experimental)!!!
I was thinking of this song. And if anyone noteworthy reacted to it, because I haven't listened in 10 years at least. Then I found my man What It Do Dave! Awesome, brother thank you for the reaction!!!
I used to play this song and Blackened (also from MetallicA) as a mid song in a set, we had an original band but we used this song to break up the half set, give people something they were familiar with. Your question in the slow breakdown that you were asking about, if that was a guitar, the answer is yes. To achieve this, you use a volume pedal, you hit the note with the volume pedal down, bring the note in with the volume pedal, then fade it out with the volume pedal. You do this for each note and achieve the effect.
im a big metallica fan and this is my all time favorite, thnx for reacting, first reactor ive seen react to it..the albums "and justice for all" and the black album are in my opinion very prophetic in how much and close they relate to today
epic bass in the beginning, just a year ago i got obsessed of it for some strange reason, i heard the song the day it was released and loved it but somehow getting it out of my brain was impossible. btw, is that gave you bbq wibes - lets go bbq :)
That quiet sound is a guitar that you pick with the volume off then roll the volume in. That way you dont hear the picking sound and gives it an alien feelig...
This is one of Metallica songs which saves me from depression! OTHERS CAN SAY THAT THE CHORUS IS HORRIBLE, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS ABOUT THIS MASTERPIECE
This is one of the only Metallica songs that ever showcased Jason Newsted and how good of a bass player he was.
Jason is actually (and perhaps increasingly) being now realized as a quintessential component of Metallica.
It is sad that they were mean to him.
Yes Jason got the writing credit for this ,he wrote the bass line and he said originally this was supposed to be an instrumental on the black album to follow suit with the other albums having instrumentals
Most people compliment the solo, but listen to what Hetfield is doing in the background, it's amazing too!
Sorry but the black album is a masterpiece. Deal with it?

It's more like 20-25 million now
Yes James rythm under Kirk's lead is phenomenal
That guitar sound during the begining of the solo is 2 guitars harmonizing very freaking tightly
I've heard that a lot. Metallica, tightest band out there
@@iamerictravis huh, some Soundgarden songs?
@@iamerictravis not by a long shot
One of my absolute favorite Metallica songs. Jason was a criminally underrated and underappreciated bassist.
I miss Jason \m/💀\m/
James wrote all the bass parts just so you know.
Jason is cool.
We love him.

@@ben1ben you heard me
@@eazye519 but why does Jason say his main contribution on the black album was my friend of misery?
fun note: the pedal used to make that wha-wha you refer to as the sound of someone crying is actually called a Crybaby.
After the crying guitar at 5:45 and the drums come back in at 5:52 your face and emotion shows it all.
One of my all time favorite bass lines
in this world seeing people react to this kind of music is rare,i feel very grateful for dave to enjoy this
You have to watch the song live from Rock am Ring in 2012. The crowd is just unbelievable.
the empty can definitely rattles the most

Harmonizing with both guitars and Jason's Bass is the heart of this song!

That intro really does sound like “movement”
The guitar crying in 6:51 is insanity intense, like a cat dieying or a pig crying ...
