Ieva Baltmiskyte - Requiem for a Glacier

  • As a part of the Arctic Circle artist & scientist residency I boarded the tall-ship Antigua and sailed for two weeks around Svalbard archipelago.
I went to the Arctic in a certain state of mind: I was open to any experience this trip could bring me and yet what I saw changed me.
We all know that the world struggles with climate change, pollution and human aggression, but Arctic is the place where we see those things with our bare eye. We cannot ignore the traces on the mountain left by a retreating glacier, massive ice calvings or different behavior of wild animals.
Blomstrandhalvøya is a small island located in front of the glacier Blomstrandbreen. Till late 20th century the island was called a peninsula, Blomstrandbreen extended onto it. The glacier retreated, uncovering that what previously been believed to be a peninsula is actually an island.
Svalbard archipelago is one of the fastest warming regions on Earth. This project was born there...

I guarded 170 acres of woodland next to my small property for the last thirty years. It was gorgeous, filled with all matter of food , medicines and wildlife. The owners finally died and it’s inheritors, who never set foot on it, unceremoniously logged it for mine supports and drilled for gas. It has been raped and turned into a waste land, over run with invasive species of plants and overpopulated with the worst animal and insect life. The migrating birds that used it to roost there, fight over the damaged remaining trees. Everything that was part of that little bit of paradise is disrupted and confused. You cant even walk it. My heart is broken.
I can only imagine the depths of emotion you felt while actually witnessing the horrors that some people are willing to greedily inflict on such an important expanse of wilderness. This piece helps to illustrate it.
I’m so glad your well and actively doing what you can to help. It’s wonderful to see you. 🕊🌹🕊

I mourn for the lost glaciers. I have climbed the high mountains and heard their resonant music. A glaciologist said there is no definition of life that would not include glacial ice.

Leva, being so caught up in the subject matter, (and somewhat emotional about it) I neglected to compliment you adequately on your performance.
The piece is truly wonderful and you played superbly. The whole creation was excellent . The videography , sound quality and editing all deserve notice and praise. Your really good when your inspired. Kudos to all involved. 🕊🖖🙂👍🕊

Thank you for your marvelous playing. I found you yesterday playing the Dowland Fantasia, WOW!!! I searched you out today and found much more than a great musician. This piece is wonderful, again, thank you. .... About 1967 I was mountaineering in the Tetons (USA) and there were scientists measuring Teton and Schoolhouse glaciers. This was my first introduction to climate change as they explained their tools and methodology. I remember flags posted at certain intervals and being told their predictions for the following decades. I returned a few times and about 7 years ago, schoolhouse was precisely as predicted decades earlier. I tried to explain to my son the lost grandeur of even this small glacier. Deniers, really political followers do not understand much of anything remotely scholarly, not because they are stupid but rather ideologically stunted. They scream as if some scientific proof, "they predicted global cooling," showing how little they know of the scientific method. In 1967 there were in fact, as always, differing camps as usual. I remember a quote something like; in science there are no authorities, only consension by rigorous, repeatable models and study.

This is a beautiful and haunting composition; bravo!! The playing is done with great care and exquisite expression, as well as real virtuosic talent. Also, the bioacoustics were an effective addition to an already great composition. I would love to hear this with a small delicately orchestrated winds ensemble in the background.
