    I will say, that point about having your index fingers and thumbs being the same distance was a great point and feel it's often not mentioned. It's a great way to keep things consistent and an easy marker for hand positioning. Plus you can feel your muscles feel off once you start rotating and changing the finger distances.

    • @coachartie

      Yeah it's often forgotten by even very high level players.

    I had played volleyball for some time but quit due to feeling a little burnt out. Then we have some volleyball in the high school i had just started, and i tried it again. Absolutely loved it.
    Out of everything I did that day, nothing beat that feeling i got when i did a backwards set and my teammate scored on it

    1. burger hands, fingers spread, equal distance between index and thumbs.
    2. missile launcher lock on, lock onto ball, hold there, consistent contact point, move feet get into position, forehead height, even when setting backwards
    3. body like spring, slight bend knee elbows wrist,
    4. read your passers, angle of pass,
    5. train track setting, on the track and lined up, parralel to net
    6. backstroke
    7. footwork and energy, net closer to net forward, so doesnt go over net

    Just something to be careful with the back set. I feel like doing the 'backstroke' movement is an easy way of getting into the back set as a beginner but a dangerous habit to maintain overtime. I've been taught that staying neutral is key. Either way good video!

      @@coachartie In our club we have been discussing the differences between the European approach to setting technique and the Americas and Asia and Australia. Really interesting. Seems to me the European way is a bit harder to learn, due to much more thumb impulse and less arms, while the "giant hamburger" seems to be more accessible, especially when entering the sport and/or moving back and forth between beach and indoor. What's your take on that?

    • @coachartie
      @coachartie  9 месяцев назад

      That's a really interesting idea on setting. I'm going to be honest I've never even considered it being taught differently depending on location but it makes sense.
      What a cool idea.
      I guess I made this video with me breaking down my understanding of setting into simple imagery.
      Would this video be considered an Australian way of teaching? Or another way? I'm so curious 🤔

    • @taikoHH
      @taikoHH 9 месяцев назад

      @@coachartie Yeah, in Europe we have this thumb-flick that provides some more energy to cover more distance. It's quite hard to learn and often results in spinning balls and ref calls. After you master it (I don't), it's awesome. In our club we have a colleague player (and coach) joining us for the next months, providing sooo much more perspective and food for thought. I hope we manage to combine the best of two worlds and encourage our players to adapt what works best for them individually.

    But ive got a question, is there any benefit to jump when setting? Like- ive done a few times just out of fun and i think its easier to just boop the ball over the net at second contact as a setter as a surprise attacl sometimes, but is it something worth to learn consistently?

      Jump settings best weapon is giving you the oppotunity as a setter to spike or dump the ball. Mostly when your front court though

    You said we would not have enough power in our forearms but I do archery and HEMA style sword fighting both of those HEAVILY rely on your forearms

    Thanks for this. Could you do tips for: learning how to aim the set better? I follow all these cues but sometimes I put in far too much power, and my accuracy is unreliable. Also I can't tell where the ball is going to go when I back set, sometimes it goes into the net, sometimes way past the court.
    Also with jump serving am I supposed to just use spiking footwork once I've learned how to throw it consistently?

      For starters try and be square to the net. When setting either forwards or backwards, your shoulder are 90 degress to the net and the ball should travel parallel to the net. Everything else is a shit ton of practice. Theres no other secret to aiming, than what coach artie said and 10 000 repetitions of the same. Try and see how the ball feels, if you set badly. Were you under the ball and where did your hands touch the ball? Noticing that and practicing consistently will make you a great setter with time

      Ok thanks. I feel my sets getting more consistent so I think im doing it technically right, just need more practice as you said since I have only some rec hours per week and no practice gym space.
      Do you have any advice for spiking timing tho? Im 6'5 and can easily reach above the net, but I find myself often too early and under the ball even though i wait for setter contact.
      I also struggle to hit down and get on top of the ball even though I know i should be contacting the top, not the side of it@@oniichan242

    Love your content. When setting, what should my target and height be for an effective set?

      Setting an effective ball really deopends on who your setting. Biggest goal as a setter should be setting in and off the net to give your spikers as many options as possible.
