This song is just another reminder that bass guitar is Masato Nakamura's primary instrument.
I like how seperate parts sound awkward on their own but together create a beautiful harmony giving you thaat sense that these plains are free and aren't corrupted and it really sets the tone with a first level feel. Just intriguing people into going, what's going to happen next and does it's job perfectly. Then it throws you into a Chemical Plant.
Then it throws you into Aquatic Ruin which is where people will most likely die from the hands of Tails.
@@BendyCrates To true. I've died there more than Metropolis Zone.
@@BendyCrates Then you end up in a Casino at Night, where the only things keeping you from Eggman/Robotnik are pinball machine and gambling.
@@JNewsted1988 In the true timeline, Sonic never got over his gambling addiction and remains there to this day
In both Sonic 1 and 2, Nakamura gave the first stage music that is predominantly happy-go-lucky with just the right amount of ominous foreboding (the bridge of Green Hill Zone and the creepy background pads in Emerald Hill). Then later stages are the reverse: predominantly evil-sounding with just a little bit of happy
the bass has no business going that hard
4:26 looks like they were trying to simulate reverb on that lead with channel 2. Amazing what people will come up with in the face of limitations.
It was used a lot on chip based music. Even more with sound chips with more channels, sometimes using more than 2 to create an even more convincing reverb effect.
They really squeezed out as much as they could

You guys on this comment *DO* know that masato is the guy that composed all of this? the entire team didnt. so you should be facing it to him
@@ctlheadquartorrzk bro
The fact that the most replayed section of this video is the bassline speaks volumes
Channel 2 providing temporary reverb for channel 1 is just genius
No joke 2:06 brought a tear to my eye...that nostalgia hit hard. I hope they keep Emerald Hill Zone on the back burner so us true Sonic fans can have it for ourselves!
To me too.....bro, i knew sonic 2 when i was 7, im 11 now, i understand u bro..
…that is so true it brung a big moment of my childhood to me
Bet you were happy to hear the Emerald Hill motif in the Sonic movie 2 trailer! I know I was!
@@camo6465 yessss I was! The new trailer looks great…Jim Carey going full 90’s Jim Carey is the best thing for that franchise.
@@metapowah I have known Sonic since I was 3 years old and I am now 10 years old
Masato was a genius. He was able to convey the bitter sweet bright emotional start with this in the same way he did with green hill.
2:06 act 2 and it’s beautiful
Please make a full version of this please

Thanks for linking to the DAC!
I say this on pretty much all of these videos but 2:49 is just stellar. It's also worth noting that this is one of the few tracks with bass as channel 0 instead of channel 2, so they probably knew just how important it is here.
But don’t they use channel 0 for sound effects as well? I thought they would’ve put a harmony on 0 instead so you can always hear the bass.
Channel 4 gives me Sonic 1 special stage vibes.
True
DAC + Channel 0 +PSG 3 is beautiful.
Genesis honestly had the weirdest sound chip
And I love it
Not weird it's FM SYNTH haven't you ever heard of techno or pop music?
Genesis had the coolest and distinct sound chip on a video game console.
Actually it had 2 sound chips. That's why you have 16-bit channels and 8-bit ones. The 8-bit one came from the Master System, and they just decided that the Genesis needed some 8-bit sounds too.
2:49 this is a good rock n' roll!!
This is such a great tune! And hoping for Sky Sanctuary through the oscilloscope one of these days too!
prayers answered
This song has a mixed mood. Bass and DAC sound so happy and enthusiastic. The PSGs sound so melancholic and depressive. The synth brass section compromises. It's not very happy but not sad either - has some energy though. In the end the song sounds very rich, very well crafted. I believe it was composed to break the expectations from previous game and say "this is a new game, this first stage looks somewhat tied to the previous game but the familiarities end here, expect everything to be different and improved from now on"
Both sonic 1 and 2 had this kind of mood for the first stage, like happy on the surface but with an ominous undertone. Kinda fits thematically I think.
I mean they both had "Hill" in the name.
2:07 Bass + DAC
Hell yeah bro 👌
The best part of any Genesis song :)
Someone needs to make an original song with this

2:49 FM bass + DAC drums + PSG hi-hats
0:00 this is pretty cool
And then 2:06 hits
I never realized how many melodies are under the original theme this is amazing great job!
This always helps me figure out how music is made.
Ahhhhhh, it's so GOOD.
This track's superiority to Green Hill Zone cannot be overstated.
My headcannon:
5:22 - Act 1 (normal emerald hill)
2:06 - Act 2 (the sun starts to set, and transitions to night after defeating robotnik and opening the capsule)
makes no sense. if u open the capsule in sonic 2, the next zone loads up.
Really love the bass line in channel 0. Best part in the song
Channel 4 and PSG 0 and 1 makes Emerald Hill sound melancholic. Imagine a Bad Future mix with that as a main feature of the track.
2:08 certified banger here
On my ninth birthday me and my mother had the recorded this song on her concert and when she woke me up on my birthday by playing this song and I guess that player and I was just wow!! It’s my birthday recorded template and recorded and played on a cassette it should have said
Me: I love this song!
0:04 : *quiet doots*
The bass goes absolutely crazy
Beats: 2:06 Harmony: 0:00Beats: 2:06 Harmony: 0:00 the original song 5:36
AYEEE LETS GO‼️ Excellent work as usual!
2:07 Even in normal gameplay when all the other channels are present, all I hear is channel 0 cuz it sounds good and that it’s so DAMN LOUD!
Channel 4 da goat
More like depressing.
2:07 is where bass and perc start
I would have loved to see this used in Mania with their amazing modern versions of the soundtracks this would have sounded even more amazing
With how busy the sound chip channels are with the music in this game, is that why Sonic has a PSG jumping sound? The thinking being that one PSG channel changing to something else for a short time wouldn’t be as noticeable. That would explain the different jump sound in Sonic CD as the music in that game is read off the disc so all channels are available.
Does anybody know what channels are used for ring collection and enemy/TV hit sound effects? I read that all music instruments and sound effects are given a priority order so low priority sounds drop off when the chip gets too busy.
Not sure why they made that decision, but actually in Sonic CD not all of the music is CD audio - the "past" tracks are on the Sega/Mega CD's 8-channel PCM sound chip and there are actually deconstructions of them on this channel. They use 7 of those 8 channels, with the remaining channel doing the sound effects (even the ones that were originally done on the stock Genesis/Mega Drive's FM chip) and the audio of the FMVs.
3:31 I swear that's all I heard when I played Sonic 2.
Same
Nah 4:12 is what i thought lol
Emerald Hill Zone act 3 (2.0)
3:31
I never noticed the little tom fill at 2:47 as a kid, really completes this track.
The sega megadrive bass 🤤
Genesis does! What Nintendon't!
At least what comes to funky bass lines.
Seriously i can't stop humming alongside with that bass.
I eat the bass
This is amazing. Made my day ❤ thank you so much
the PSG hihats thats clever use for extra percussion.
This song is so much deeper than I thought.
The bass line in the first half of the A section was used in a small part of the opening theme to Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.. anyone else pick that up?
damn the bass is really gettin at it
This is so perfect this is my favorite Sonic song
This really sounds so good and fun to listen to
Why this is so good man ...
2:07 🔥🔥🔥
He's using PSG 0 and1 together to add more harmonics to the pads on FM 3 and 4 :O
Whoever played the guitar and drums to this is nice⚡️
2:47 when u say: "snes has a good rock n roll song"
me: look... look this song so :)
Channel 1 alone sounds like it came from the prototypes 0:18
Sonic 2 movie out this WEEK 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻😌😌😌😌😌😌😌
one request? how about metropolis zone on the osciliscope? that would be cool!
Is it me, or did they use the spring sound for the bass.
I'm not hearing this, aren't I
2:06 sounds like a pause menu music.
Dat bass tho
0:44 this part alone sounds depressing, it’s like channel 4 is humming it’s own sad song. Same thing for psg 0 and 1
There were parts in this I never noticed, like channel 4, psg 0 and 1 because I was so focused on the main melody and the drums/bass. it's incredible how layered this is
I never would have known that Channels 3 and 4 overlay to play a distinct sound throughout pretty much the whole song.
Nice love it
Amazing
My childhood summed up
Fact: Channiel 1 & 2 are the best thing to come up in this song
2:07 I like this so much
Love channel 4 by itself
the PSG 0 / 1 harmony is cool as shit.
Easily one of the BEST Sonic tracks… period!
Green Hill Zone 2.0
6:13 EVERYBODY NOW!
Here after the teaser trailer.
Same!!! So hype to hear emerald hill lol
Channel 4 by itself sounds so ominous
Usually, Channel 1 is the bass channel, but in a majority of Sonic 2 themes, channel 0 is the bass.
2:06 Emerald hill zone act 3
You should probably do yoshi’s island athletic theme oscilloscope
Channel 4 be vibin doe
0:00 Ch1, Ch2, Ch3 starts
0:04 Ch1
0:45 Ch4
1:26 PSG0, PSG1
1:54 Ch3, Ch4 joins ( jump scares me )
2:07 Ch0, DAC
2:49 Ch0, DAC, PSG3
3:31 Ch1, Ch0, DAC, PSG3
4:12 Ch1, Ch2, Ch0, DAC, PSG3
4:54 All PSGs, Ch1, Ch2, Ch0, DAC
5:35 Ch4, All PSGs, Ch1, Ch2, Ch0, DAC
6:17 Every channel
Can we just give it up though for the little mouse playing all the tiny instruments in Channel 1?
breaking down songs like this feels like you're trying to remember the song in your head as an old person
brings tears to my eyes
2:08
I heard aomething like channel1 only, when i load and load my rom on emulator, i need help in finding this version of track
3:43 This Is what i was looking for :DD
Hey there man! These deconstrutions are awesome! Have you considered doing one for Kirby's dream course? Amazing soundtrack!
I fw this hard be green hill zone still up there
20:05 nice,dac and channel 0 is perfect
2:06 sounds like that one part in the aosth intro.
if you hear closely in said aosth intro, you can hear the emerald hill bassline but orchestra
channel 1's got the moves
Channel 0 and DAC are 👌
i need to know what instrument channel 3 is
3:02 sounds like a completely different song
So im trying to learn this stuff, i know the yamaha sound card has 6 channels, and the psg has 4 total, one for white noise.
What is "dac" on here? Is it a separate channel of the yamaha chip? Is it chanel 5?
DAC is drums.
They miss the chance to play EHZ in the Sonic movie man...
2:06 wow
yknow i’ve never heard anyone mention the face that the channel 0/bass line is used in the opening theme of aosth!
it’s very subtle, but it’s there!
Maybe you can do a cool mega man 2 VGM or A Ristar vgm
Channel 0 and DAC Channel always sound great.
Dang every sound except bass and DAC sound so harsh and grating when isolated!
Do the sonic 1 title screen deconstructed via oscilloscope!
I like how it is
Channel 0 and DAC together would be the actual perfect intro to the song for emerald hill, does anyone else agree?
I am surprised that channel 0 is the bass
